I am truly grateful to have discovered this channel of yours Jordan. I am a huge fan of your other works on friendlyjordies (both the UA-cam channel and both podcasts especially Neel + Jordan). This has all played an integral part of my life in my pursuit of personal excellence and continual improvement. Self help is not some uninteresting hippie new age view that I once admittedly thought it was back in my school days when really I would’ve benefited greatly from had I seen past those narrow views, but it is truly one the most beneficial gifts you can give to yourself and society as a whole. Without these videos and insights from the various podcasts and books that you described, I wouldn’t be who I am now and wouldn’t have had the courage to face and share my story in an effort to help others. Thank you Jordan Shanks, Stay legendary and keep inspiring.
I love self help for the same reasons. There are no excuses, believe that EVERYTHING that happens to you is your responsibility and within your control. Suspend your disbelief. Shift the locust of control to within. Self help books over time help you to rewire your subconscious mind to a place of empowerment. They calibrate you for the mindset you need to have everyday to actualise on your potential. I’ve only been consuming this type of information for a couple of years, I can only imagine what will happen after a decade. Thank you as always Jordan, this channel is an excellent resource!
I like self-help 'cause of the personal responsibility aspect. I am in control of my life and therefore, every action I take or neglect will be on me. I could either destroy my life or build it up. It's always up to me in the end.
Something you missed about the cretins that diss self help and call you lucky is that you can't make a guide on luck, you can't give luck to other people. You can however do what you're doing and help them learn a tool set for consistent self improvement and that's worth alot more than luck. Thanks Jordan ya doing good work.
I share this same passion for self help. Change your inside and your outside starts to change as well. It takes the time and actual want to change and take responsibility for yourself though.
I feel like i fall into a trap of working fulltime to support myself but not having enough time to focus on self help, but im sure there's still enough time in the day and i do try to make use of that spare time. I dont know about anyone else but the feeling of working on yourself full time feels different
if you dont do this already then what I recommend to you is deducting the hours you work, sleep and lost time (driving to work, showering, making/eating food, doing taxes, etc) from 168 then allocate some time to things like studying self help and whatever else you're interested in. sometimes it's hard to follow up on bcos you don't have the energy or distractions but following atleast half the time is still a decent accomplishment. hope that helps.
👍👍to you Jordie. I too started on that road 10 + years ago and it's really starting to come together now . And has been invaluable . And lol Robinson does come across as a wanker but it doesn't mean he is wrong about everything and he is right about some that is for sure.
i skate have been since 17. recently i quit smoking and started doing push ups and running every day also started eating more healthy foods. i feel better then ever
I'm naturally more of a loner (I would legit choose to hang out by myself when I was in primary school, even though I had friends I could've kicked it with). I guess some of that's just carried over into my adult life. So I certainly see plenty of benefits with not being in a long term relationship, as I truly like being solitary. I dunno, it's not always for everyone
If you have the ability to commit to a long term relationship but choose not to there's nothing wrong, it's more people who are trying to be in a long term thing and can't do it despite trying there best.
I like your content and I'm in total agreement with the overall message "Focus on improving yourself first", realising the control you have on your own life, always look to improve and get better, developing skills, reading, execution etc. However, I think you can also be pro-self help & anti the pseudo-scientific NLP, diet advice etc rubbish Tony Robbins often spouts - particularly more recently. I think if Tony's overall message was solely "Re-frame" stuff that happens to your life to find the positives and re-take personal accountability - fine. But he doesn't just say that. It's stuff like recommending the Alkaie diet, some of the objectively poor marriage counselling he performs at his seminars that turn a lot of people off him - at least of a personal level.
His marriage counselling has saved three relationships I know of while I wouldn't attribute him to saving my relationship but the tools he's taught me has enhanced it greatly. I practice his basic diet techniques which really boils down to eat a fuck load of vegetables and I can feel the difference whenever I stray from it. Ten years and counting.
most self help programmes and books are a massive cash grab and an attempt to extort vulnerable individuals but when done the right way it can be super beneficial. just hate it when people preach a “perfect formula” for the “perfect life” ya feel
Fair, fair. but hear me out. There isn't such a thing as a perfect life. But there are a few things you can do to make your current life at least a little bit better. Like when I picked up _Seven Habits_ I thought it was one of those get-rich-quick scheme books. Turns out actually it had a bunch of coping strategies that helped my autistic arse deal with the anxiety of this crazy af world. I honestly reckon it was a net positive for me to read and then eventually buy that book. I agree that the seminars and such that a lot of these gurus put out are complete shams, but the books are great entry-level materials to give you a nudge in the right direction. I'd also pick up _the Power of Habit_ too, that's another really awesome book that teaches you why people develop habits and how to break cycles of habituation.
@@rtmpgt that’s great to hear! i can relate to that as someone that suffers with OCD that gets in the way of a lot of my daily routine and makes it hard for me to concentrate and get things done. i think it’s important to find what works for you, and if it’s making your life better/easier, i’m all for it. especially if self-help is catered to people in specific circumstances, i think it can be very beneficial, but if it’s preaching a “one size fits all” kind of approach, then it’s most likely just a money-making scheme.
@@luxlisbon7979 well to be fair Those books aren't specifically aimed or designed for specific people, but there are some books for autistics that I found that really helped with coming to grips with my identity and such. _Neurotribes_ is one of those books for example.
without self help i would definitely be suffering in my current situation but because of it i can still appreciate life and continue to strive to something better, as soon as something sounds a little cheesey or cringe it's instantly rejected i think that is why most people turn there nose up at Tony Robbins, etc.

I think its important to realise that what has happened to you may not be your fault. Or even if it is your fault, it is in the past, move on. However, its your responsibility to get yourself out of this mess. no one is coming to save you. There's a great line from the movie "the Martian" where the main character says "At some point in life, everything is gonna go south on you. Everything's gonna turn to shit and your going to say 'this is it, this is how I end', now you can either accept that, or get to work" Its like, if you fell down a chasm. Falling the down the chasm may not have been your fault. Or who knows. maybe it was. but it's happened. Shit happens. We all make mistakes. Move on. Now its your responsibility to actually get out of the chasm.
I tack on "...for now" onto most of my thoughts. "This is awesome... for now" "This sucks... for now" It's based upon the Buddhist concept of Impermanence.
@@TAYGARD69 I have to disagree. While his frame of reference IS "War Blood USA" you can't deny he is a subject matter expert. I understand not everyone is comfortable with that kind of subject. No. I refuse to accept being an unhealthy, lonely, anxious, incompetent, poor, miserable loser. Therefore I'm working hard to fix myself and improve my life.
@@harrysecombegroupie the problem is that you think you are an incompetent loser, that causes the anxiety, that causes the ill health. And don't even get me started on the "poor" part. Money is bull shit. Don't chase wealth. Just close your eyes to the world you currently see, and smile every day.
What Jordan talks about is not chasing wealth, nor love, nor fame, nor any of the external things that come from self-actualisation. He always talks about goals, and you should always have goals. It doesn't matter what those goals are, what matters is that you have reflected on what those goals should be. That you have purposefully crafted goals which negate the self and shape you into what you want to be, and that you constantly practice this. It's important to practice habits to become closer to the person you want to be, it's what philosophers have spoken about throughout history, each in their own unique way (Socrates, Aristotle, Hegel, Neitzsche, all had their own way of realising this concept). The unexamined life is blah blah blah poo poo pee pee. If you refuse to reflect and refine your own being, you're basically saying you are perfect, that you can't possibly be better, and I think that's a flat out lie, unless you're Buddha or Plutarch or Jesus or one such cult figure. Also if you don't make a conscious effort to change, then you're letting yourself act as a puppet under someone else's control, be that a puppet of a former self, advertising, the laws of physics, etc... You're denying your own humanity and residing with the animals. So basically get on that sigma grindset and become billionaire playboy philanthropist stuff
I like Tony Robbins, I think he has great messages. People don't like him because he rips people off. He uses manipulative sales tactics at his seminars to exploit people.
His books are great, his podcast is also pretty good. However, his seminars are basically what you read in the books but you pay $5000 for it. Then again though, that's how he makes the bulk of his money.
Can you make a video giving tips on how you or anyone would, Prepare for their first psychotherapist appointment.. how do you talk about yourself when you dont really know yourself in objective terms and ways to open up quickly to people when you know you should be able to but subjective views on yourself hold you back.
You can talk about what problems you're having or what you're struggling to cope with to start out, they won't get you to do anything scary they get to know you for the first few sessions to see what's happening.

@@graemegladman What if I told you that there's really no such thing as "the left" I mean I came from what people would consider a "Right Wing" background myself, and after years of being engaged politics on "Both sides" there's a few things actually learnt. 1: The notion of "left and right" are created by media outlets to forcibly divide society into groups on topics they cannot control. The idea being that they build these bullshit little revolutions to keep the sense of anger at a fixed level, making it easier to manipulate society into consenting to actions that harm them as a collective group. (Noam Chomsky) 2: Ideology is inescapable, but that doesn't mean you can't have a good ideology, you just need to work with the material conditions of the world around you. Focus on what you want to achieve post-revolution (or post-election, we're not dealing with a true tyranny here) and that will lead you to how you should influence society at a granular level (Slavoj Zizek) 3: Most people who try to change the world don't have their own worlds in order. Focus on getting your house in order and you'll become way more convincing (Stephen Covey and Jordan Peterson) 4: There are two kinds of policies. Policies that benefit the oligarchy, and those that benefit the society. (Michael Parenti) I'd start with maybe reading some Zizek or some Chomsky (I think chomsky's more your Jam since Zizek goes deep into hegelian stuff which can be a real headache to read). Those guys got me out of the nutbag side of politics and into some more reasonable theories on how I can influence the world. I no longer consider myself on any side of politics, I now go with what works best based upon material conditions for the country we're in.
@@rtmpgt I know the true meaning is steeped in history but now it is generally anyone who promotes climate change, wokeness, gender identity, or similar ideals.
@@graemegladman granted those are big and important issues, but there's not a lot an individual can really do to make significant changes because, and hear me out here, only 100 or so companies have to change their practices to effect positive change on that front. What's annoying is the virtue signalling. The whole "I use a reusable cup therefore I'm better than you" crowd. It stinks of corporate blameshifting. Companies got us in this mess and it's up to them to fix it. We can't be expected to shoulder the entire burden and more importantly, _it's not your fault that it's happening_ Yes, it's exacerbated by humans, but it's not exacerbated by _the decisions of individual humans_ as we are all in this system which is operated and managed by these same companies which make the products which cause this issue. We don't have a choice here. it's a monumentally significant issue that no one individual can solve or change. Not even a collective can do better. It is literally a few governments and a few companies that need to ever so slightly adjust how they do business. The problem is that some people think they're making a difference when they're not. It's this moral high ground shit that pisses people like us who are literally just trying to cope in a world that wasn't exactly built for us. You know, paying the bills and staying afloat. If you can at least accept that the decisions of these few companies and the decisions they've made in the past have fucked up the planet, that's a great start. The expectation that you as an individual can fix the problem is bullshit. No one person can. These titans of industry have to make decisions that actually make a difference. And neither you nor I can control that. At least you can try and influence that by putting people who are less likely to respond to oligarchy into power at election time, switch your banks to one that doesn't influence coal companies, or maybe even donate to a charity to get some tax bucks back. You can then use those to turn around to those smarmy fucks and at least say, "my bank doesn't kill orang-utans. Checkmate, libtard"

ADHD isnt necessarily the deficiency in focus. It is the inconsistent and immatured function of focusing consistently. People with ADHD can tunnel focus in great extremes to desired stimuli. However where ADHD falls flat is - when you have to focus on things you dont necessarily like. Yes this can be said to all, but when looking at statistics comparing outcome of neurotypical vs adhd people, you see a lower life expectancy, lower academic achievements and less likely to hold a job. It is important for ADHD people to have people to look up to.

Labor has abandoned their housing policies purely for the "vote" i'm so dissapointed, lets just hope they're lieing, get in power, and put the housing changes in anyway.
There's other ways Labor can recoup costs. Patching tax loopholes, recovering through spending (thanks to the MMT model) and so on. Housing is simply one of many ways that Labor can fix a government. They've chosen not to do this purely for strategic reasons. There will be another way that they'll sort this. The last time Labor went on a strict policy angle, it backfired. They lost Queensland and well, we all know what happened there... We ended up with another four years of Scunt Morrison and his merry men. Labor's strategy now, is to differentiate itself based upon its management of covid at the state level amongst other things. Albo's keeping tight-lipped on policy, therefore he's refusing to give Murdoch as much ammunition as possible. Then again, that's to be expected from Rudd's deputy PM.
Thank you Jordan Shanks,
Stay legendary and keep inspiring.
Strive for Skill, well said Jordan.
I'm making "FIX YOURSELF, CNUT" tshirts. No, you're not getting a cut, cnut. Love your work JS
Amen. "You get the results you seek". Brilliant stuff
Self-help is basically just working to shift the odds slightly more in your favour. Doing that takes time.
Love this vid, love this channel. Awesome work Shanksy, you're changing lives for the better.
Love it when he yells
Can see why they scared of you now Jordy. Time aint on anyones side anymore. Nice vid mate
I share this same passion for self help. Change your inside and your outside starts to change as well. It takes the time and actual want to change and take responsibility for yourself though.
I would really appreciated if youd have the time one day to write a self help book yourself. I would love to read it man. Keep up the amazing work
I think we can all agree if Jordan wrote a self help book we'd all pre-order it
Love this video, and love your passion ❤❤ thankyou for continually helping me in so many different fkn ways
Absolute legend
jordan hope you are doing ok yourself during these hectic times. stay calm bro you got this
I feel like i fall into a trap of working fulltime to support myself but not having enough time to focus on self help, but im sure there's still enough time in the day and i do try to make use of that spare time.
And has been invaluable .

self help has changed my life, gary vee through to david goggins means i dont feel anxious anymore and lost heaps of weight
I never realised Jordan was so insightful. Or that this account existed until yesterday. Liked and subscribed!
I love this channel the most thank you 😍
I like your content and I'm in total agreement with the overall message "Focus on improving yourself first", realising the control you have on your own life, always look to improve and get better, developing skills, reading, execution etc.
Also when Tony Robbins endorsed MLM's.
Wholeheartedly agree.
most self help programmes and books are a massive cash grab and an attempt to extort vulnerable individuals but when done the right way it can be super beneficial. just hate it when people preach a “perfect formula” for the “perfect life” ya feel
Fair, fair. but hear me out.

I am 36 and went into university almost in my final year finally 😅 quite different to working full time i must say 😅 hopefully change of careers pay off haha

my issue with self help is the people who make it be "shelf help" reading books without taking action
Thanks Jordan, I really needed this!
You fucking legend. If I ever see you, I'm gonna give you the biggest mother fucking high five ever.
Everything's gonna turn to shit and your going to say 'this is it, this is how I end', now you can either accept that, or get to work"
Its like, if you fell down a chasm. Falling the down the chasm may not have been your fault. Or who knows. maybe it was. but it's happened. Shit happens. We all make mistakes. Move on. Now its your responsibility to actually get out of the chasm.
I tack on "...for now" onto most of my thoughts.
"This is awesome... for now"
"This sucks... for now"
It's based upon the Buddhist concept of Impermanence.
Can too much self help create too much self awareness? And end up hindering you
Thank you, intense floaty head
Thanks Jordan

None of us need fixing jordan. If people want to find happiness, they need to accept who they are and accept who everyone else is.
That is happiness.
cringe and bluepilled
@@Wagon_Lord I take all the pills and none of the pills
Jordan got the Spiderman 3 haircut
Not sure where I heard it, but I think "everyone can, but not everyone does" applies here.
What do you think about David Goggins
I like Tony Robbins, I think he has great messages. People don't like him because he rips people off. He uses manipulative sales tactics at his seminars to exploit people.
His books are great, his podcast is also pretty good. However, his seminars are basically what you read in the books but you pay $5000 for it. Then again though, that's how he makes the bulk of his money.
This video is very Alex Jones in that the passion is engaging
Best vids when Jordan gets angry
Can you make a video giving tips on how you or anyone would,
Prepare for their first psychotherapist appointment.. how do you talk about yourself when you dont really know yourself in objective terms and ways to open up quickly to people when you know you should be able to but subjective views on yourself hold you back.
You can talk about what problems you're having or what you're struggling to cope with to start out, they won't get you to do anything scary they get to know you for the first few sessions to see what's happening.
not a question but any self help comments with the Olympics in mind? It's easy to fall into the trap of Olympic jealousy and feel really inadequate so how can you change your attitude towards a more positive outlook?
See athletes as role models to aspire too rather than as impossible targets that you can never hope to compete against.
What are your thoughts on stoicism and their beliefs Jordie?

Hahahahahhahaha
@@jordanshanks5340 I am just keeping you on your toes. I know I bag some of the left wing things you champion, but I totally respect what your doing.
@@graemegladman What if I told you that there's really no such thing as "the left"
I mean I came from what people would consider a "Right Wing" background myself, and after years of being engaged politics on "Both sides" there's a few things actually learnt.
1: The notion of "left and right" are created by media outlets to forcibly divide society into groups on topics they cannot control. The idea being that they build these bullshit little revolutions to keep the sense of anger at a fixed level, making it easier to manipulate society into consenting to actions that harm them as a collective group. (Noam Chomsky)
2: Ideology is inescapable, but that doesn't mean you can't have a good ideology, you just need to work with the material conditions of the world around you. Focus on what you want to achieve post-revolution (or post-election, we're not dealing with a true tyranny here) and that will lead you to how you should influence society at a granular level (Slavoj Zizek)
3: Most people who try to change the world don't have their own worlds in order. Focus on getting your house in order and you'll become way more convincing (Stephen Covey and Jordan Peterson)
4: There are two kinds of policies. Policies that benefit the oligarchy, and those that benefit the society. (Michael Parenti)
I'd start with maybe reading some Zizek or some Chomsky (I think chomsky's more your Jam since Zizek goes deep into hegelian stuff which can be a real headache to read).
We can't be expected to shoulder the entire burden and more importantly, _it's not your fault that it's happening_
Yes, it's exacerbated by humans, but it's not exacerbated by _the decisions of individual humans_ as we are all in this system which is operated and managed by these same companies which make the products which cause this issue.
Checkmate, libtard"
effing godsend

Just an observation and from what you've been saying about being fidgety and a class clown, I think you probably have ADHD. That's not necessarily a bad thing! As someone with ADHD, I see the similarities.
I don't think he has ADHD. I think honestly he has way too much focus for that.
Either that or he's somehow managed to pull of something miraculous and has managed to get control of it without meds, which is fucking impressive.

@@ADerpyReality what?
There's other ways Labor can recoup costs. Patching tax loopholes, recovering through spending (thanks to the MMT model) and so on.
Housing is simply one of many ways that Labor can fix a government. They've chosen not to do this purely for strategic reasons. There will be another way that they'll sort this.

@@Aileron90 Well think about the cultural zeitgeist here. Oligarchs rule the world and unfortunately the bulk of people don't have the time to read into shit about that. Consider too that anything that stinks of socialism is highly unpopular amongst people these days, you can blame McCarthyist ideals and the Murdoch press for that.
Remember too that Hawke wasn't much of a political innovator and we got him for 12 years. He did all the good shit he did in stealth. Essentially, they're taking the McGowan strat. Shut up, and do work behind the scenes. We're sick of marketers. We just want a government that gets shit done.
