BEST SETTINGS FOR QUARTER MILE/DRAGY TIMES for ZF8 guys
1/4: DSC OFF, Brake boost (NO LAUNCH CONTROL) TO ~2000RPM, Release the brakes, shift around 6500rpm
DRAGY: start at 45mph/80kph in 4th gear, DSC OFF, Floor it, shift at 6500rpm through your end speed
If you have a big turbo, adjust your launch RPM and shift points higher based on your power band.
What about putting the shifter in manual and not using the paddles when drag racing? I have read this suggested but never clarified. What mode Sport+ with DSC? or DSC off, sport+ mode and leave the shifter in manual position?
@@zeitgeist888 watch the video. There is no such thing as Sport+ and DSC off.
I’ve always achieved faster times running through 3rd, 4th then in to 5th bizarrely
That has been true for some people. I think it depends pn the supporting mods. But rule of thumb is less shifts = faster times.
For the 1/4, could you do as you mention (DSC off / no launch control, 2k Brake Boost etc) but then after take off, place it back into something like Sport+? I ask as I wonder how accurately you can manually shift each time compared to the ZF8 probably knowing best? Or has this method of switching after take off been tried and manual shifting still comes out on top? Thanks.
Haha this channel is becoming one of my favs on YT. Love learning about this gem of an motor. Thanks G!
How come your videos are always spot on things I wonder!
Always well articulated brotha. B58 is so nice 👌
This has to be the most simple and comprehensive guide to modern BMW's drive modes I could find. Thank you!
I love how there’s always something different in your engine bay 😆
Awesome video! I was afraid to ask someone about a detailed explanation of the modes. Thank you
Very informative, great video !
DSC, had no clue, can't wait to investigate tomorrow. Thanks
Really enjoy your videos and the thoughtful presentation. Appreciate your time putting these together.
Thank you 🙏🏾
Thank you!! I have BM3 installed, Xdelete and XHP transtune. I was freaking out a little, kept going in to the limp mode when I tried using Xdelete. Now thanks to you I know why .... Long-press 5sec!! Dammit, haha, I knew I was missing something.
Great information,, much appreciated
Thank you very much for this.
Loving the content 👍
Btw my 392 scat pack got smoked by a 340 a few times which made decide to switch to the b58 platform. Im new but learning a lot from you my brotha
Snack pack🤣
respect
@@khoa2k123 lmao the scat was fun too don’t get me wrong but I got humbled by the B58 fasho
@@MrFallou13 my 328 humbles scats lol
Happy for you my guy, enjoy the car you boutta have way more fun than you did in the scat .
Great video ❗️❗️I definitely started noticing that now having the car for 10 months now 😩🥳and understanding the modes and what they do , what you said at 9:50 - was a good speech 💯💯 definitely gotta respect the car . Definitely subscribing and following the build 🤙🏾🔥
Great video, dispels a lot of misconceptions. For auto transmissions, I'd say flicking the gear lever to the left into 'sport' wakes the car up more than any of the drive settings.
Clicking it into s with the sport transmission it gets so aggressive
the car's operating instructions are not very explicit on all the nuances of auto tuning as well as on the eDGL in DSC off mode. It took me 6 months of use and testing to understand all of these intricacies. Thank you for clarifying how these modes work a bit.
Also would be good to mention Rev matching , when downshifting gears , which is absolutely amazing feature 👌🏻
Rev matching is turned off only in DCS OFF mode.
Actualy on my M240i (2018) the DCS mode makes the exhaust louder (I don't mean the artifical noise in cabin). That is why I use this mode most of the time - it keeps the suspension "civil" in urban (bad roads) environment, but the car is responding more directly (so you don't feel like somebody stealing a few horses from under your butt everytime you push the throttle - I don't mean the gas mapping, but the throttle response feel) and the exhaust sound is nice and open (burble when releasing the gas or downshifting). One more thing not mentioned here - the DSC OFF mode is the only one that turns the rev matching off (for manual trans) 😉
I had no idea that even in sport+ engine might cut power!! Dsc off it is then! Thank you for the info
Yep if the sensors believe that the car is getting too crazy it will reel it in. Only DSC off completely removes all nannies.
🧤 Perfect explanation of how the 6 individual modes work. Maybe @ 2:03 - 2:13 where you mention the throttle body, you may want to delve into the Valvetronic possibly the Vanos system to. Just a comment for future content for you if you want to go that far into mechanics of the B58 Kev. Keep up all your excellent work, Ant.
That's interesting because a lot of people ask about the difference between valvetronic and vanos. Maybe a topic for a future video
dsc off is without any restrictions regarding the fuel map
u kind of forgot to speak about the exhaust valve settings and the burbles aswell kinda. in traction the valve is open thus beeing comfort mode and burbles are enebled but softer aswell as shorter. u especially notice that with MPPSK or aftermarket valved exhaust. eco pro will also turn down the climate control a little to save fuel aswell as it shifts really soon on 8at AT about 1000-1500rpm
Thanks for the info on the different modes. I need to tune this car beyond the BMW performance factory tune. I have the Factory M package. What time should I seek for more power?
They all make more power.
Nice information bro! I have the 340i xdrive with bm3 stage 2 and xHP stage 3, do you recommend to use xDelete with dsc off on road course?
Xdelete would weaken your drive shaft. Wouldn’t do it tbh
I wouldn't
Thanks for the suggestions, that’s what I thought too. It’s waste of money. Lol
What about cooling? I have heard that different modes change the way the thermostat opens?
“Mustang thing” Got me cracking up lmao.
ua-cam.com/video/T5ALlqQxK7M/v-deo.html 😂😂😂
Kern! Pls respond bro. I have a stock 2018 340i. Please tell me the best way to do 40s!
I was under the impression that the ELSD / E Diff is active in all driving modes not just in DSC OFF.
🐐
Hello, Ive just installed a MHD Stage 2 to my m240i and it doesnt burble when i turn od DSC completely.. Is there any way too make it burble with DSC off too? Thanks, you are the man. Your videos are very helpfull! Big UP from Prague Czech Republic
adjust the settings in your tune
I've been watching your videos for some time now and they're very informative! I'm the owner of a 18' 340i RWD and also have the 6WB cluster. I tried to dyno it about a month back and we struggled to get it into dyno mode. Any idea how to activate it on the 6wb?
It's the same way as the analog cluster. Long press trip reset to access the hidden menu and keep press until you get to roller mode
@@kern417 thanks, I did try this but still didn't come across the option when I continued scrolling through the hidden menu. I'll check with the local dealership for assistance and update you.
@@keeshalramjit5900 how long did you hold it? It should show maintenance stuff first but keep holding until it shows software information
Was considering to have a novelty plate custom made that reads "DSC OFF"
Great tutorial! I have a question regarding DSC off mode. I have a 340ix auto and have recently noticed that the torque limiter channel present in log files doesn’t engage if I am shifting manually from a standing start in DSC off mode. However, if I use DSC off and let the car shift itself in auto mode, the torque limiter engages until I let my foot off the gas. This really kills any acceleration. Is this normal and if not, could it be a software or hardware issue? Thanks.
Do you have xhp
@@kern417 Yes. Stage 3. The torque limits are set to 1200 NM in all 8 gears.
I'm not sure about that one. I wouldn't think it would intervene either way
so dsc off is best for races
is there a way to alter the chase and drivetrain settings through apps like bimmercode and etc? like If I wanted the stiff suspension and acceleration but didn't want the tight steering wheel.
Unfortunately no. You can only set engine (sensitive throttle and burbles), drivetrain (stiffer suspension/steering wheel), or both engine & Drivetrain
Hi, do you have a LSD? And what is your opinion on them, im looking to put a custom stage 1 on my 440i and my tuner said I will be looking at getting around 420hp and 600nm would it be a good idea to get an lsd or is that not that much needed with this power?
An LSD isn't really needed. It's mostly for more grip when going around turns
What of you're in sport+ and press and hold the traction?
That is dsc off mode
Eco pro is more designed for city/town driving. The mileage benefits will be greater than those seen with highway driving.
I mean the way it decouples the transmission to roll in neutral with cruise control is significant for highway driving
@@kern417 What year is yours? My 2016 never decoupled when in cruise control. I deactivated coasting in general, however well built modern BMW's are there's inherant risk to reengaging the drivetrain at highway speed.
@@morganfreeman4726 i mean you do understand that's what happens every time you shift right? It's built into the tuning.
@@kern417 The RPM difference between shifting during acceleration and reengaging in coasting is significant. A significance that is lessened when coasting at lower speeds.
@@morganfreeman4726 all the car has to do is rev match. It's the same thing that happens when shifting, except if rev matches to 2-3000rpm cruising instead of 4000+ when WOT shifting or even 6000+ when downshifting
Dude you are like a BMW encyclopedia. Those beer sippers in Bavaria should start cutting you a check. And I feel the ECO mode is there for when you want to see what it feels like to be a Honda Accord driver. Now question for you my good sir.. Why does the car warm up so much faster in Sports mode? I never did that in my old E92 335.
I haven't noticed that but there is a different cooling strategy in different modes
@@kern417 That makes sense.
10:55 - "Brake Boosting" is this one foot on the brake and the other simultaneously on the gas? If so, won't this do a burnout if the car is RWD when trying to do a 1/4 mile run from a stand still?
Not necessarily. The friction from the brakes can prevent the wheels from spinning up until a certain RPM if you press the brakes in hard.
Push The brakes as hard as you can and it should hold a good amount of throttle input before losing traction in the rear
Quick question about the eco pro - is it best used only on a highway (so it reduces fuel usage) or more for around town?
Doesn't really matter
@@kern417 Thanks for the swift response. I also loved your video on the different stages of mods/tunes. Very clear. Do you still have your 340i or did you trade it in for the 440i?
@@love2huntbooks2 I've always had a 440 and i bought a 340i earlier this year
Eco pro would great during the engine break in period. Don’t you think?
I mean i guess but it's not really necessary.
@@kern417 As it prevents brutal acceleration I meant
I get stiffer under sports + mode
5:42 - indeed 😁
LMAO
😏
You look like an expert with B58 cars, I have a question. Can ZF 8HP50 transmission in this car handle stage 3 torque which is more than 500 ft lbs ? In wiki, it says this transmission max, torque it can handle is368ft lbs, is that much torque bad to transmission? I am kind of worried about this. thanks
Yes it can. Just get xhp
Not stock you’ll need to tune the transmission with XHP stage 3 and then it can handle whatever you throw at it , Otherwise stage three with stock transmission won’t be good
I’m buying m240 or 340, RWD or AWD? I can’t decide. I want to be able to hook from a dig and I’m not sure how this car does from a dig.
Awd will be easier on the street. Rwd can hook with a good tire and track prep
i have individual setting in idrive6 ( you choose : sport - sport+ - sport individual ) but the car is newer (2019)
Guessing it's not a 1,2,3, or 4 series.
@@kern417 G02 M40i 2019
I said at the beginning of the video that some cars are different
@@kern417 yes looking your instrument cluster , it's just after your model ( in time ), they redesign to make bigger screen , but the needles are the same . after maybe it's because I have M package
I did not try if I can store theses setting on the 7 memories on the "reconverted FM stations memory buttons"
@@Tupeutla 0:21
It's literally the first thing i mention in the video.
As a manual what clutch do you have? And how much power can it last?
I have the 550i clutch and i believe it can hold 550-600 ft lbs. I will be testing it out as I add more power.
@@kern417 okay keep up posted! Thank you for the great content!
Does my 2019 M sport 440 have factory LSD?
The F-Series? No.
It was a very rare option so it's not likely
So if i do a roll race against someone the traction Mode will be the best ???
DSC off is fastest
Do you have a lsd installed?
No
Believe it or not, my car (m240xi) will start on sport and sport +
So what does it mean when you put it in traction mode in sport+?
There's no way to combine 2 modes.
I’m asking because on my car you can. ‘21 M340i. The other day I got up past 120mph in Sport+ with Traction mode on and felt a little shimmy. Trying to figure it out.
Like I said, you can't combine modes. When you press traction button it goes into it's own mode. I'm not seeing any evidence that it would be different on your car. The primary difference between sport + and traction mode is explained in the video. Throttle sensitivity is higher in sport +.
So according to this, when my dash says “Sport + / TRACTION” there is no actual difference from just being in “Sport+”. Hm. I’m gonna have to ask around about that.
@@rb3782 doesn't make sense when traction is disabled in sport +. I've never seen an instance where there's a separate mode.
Would you say it's dangerous to completely turn off the dsc on an xdrive?
It all comes down to the driver ultimately but considering the xdrive system, you should be just fine. -m240ix 😁
@@angeloc4722 ohok
Missed the trans sport mode.
Hard to miss a topic when it's not a part of the discussion 👌🏾
@@kern417 Ok.
I have a 340i and the car literally feels faster in comfort than in sport. Anyone else experience this? I tuned with BM3 and it’s still like this even after tuning
08:04 mustang owners 👀😬
Just confirmed a lot of info. Thanks again Kern! -@stormi_f30
Tbf i find sport+ overall bad. Unpredictable, even dangerous. Plus it doesn't have the benefit of Ediff, so DSC fully off all day.
