One of my biggest challenges to writing a cover letter is not writing it out, but believing that the party who will be reading it will view it as a fair prospect for thieir empty position. I have put time and effort into each resume and cover letter and application and I fail to get any word back from anyone. I am so frustrated , that I am on the verge of moving from my community. I realize that I live in a small to medium size university town in Florida and this has been a very challenging year with all that our dear country has been through, but I sometimes feel like loosing hope. Your videos and comments from former students always inspire me to move forward with the understanding that my new career is just around the corner. Thank you for your inspiration.
As with the Resume video, this shed a light on just how bad my Cover Letter was as was the case with my Resume. The aforementioned videos have seriously changed my confidence levels! Thank You so much!!!

Awesome to hear! I'm so glad the information in this video made all the difference. Thanks for sharing and I wish you the very best in your new position. When do you start?
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin I have not been given a start date yet. The hiring manager told me I should be receiving an official offer this week and to be on the lookout for it. Thank you once again.
I know what a cover letter is. But, with English being the second language, it could take me hours to write one. In addition to that, I usually don’t think too much or boast of what I do. Thank you Heather. I am returning to work after many years. I have never done a cover letter before because I did not understand the purpose. This was truly helpful.

Hi Professor, Thank you for your help. You don't know who I am, but this video and your channel generally are the most helpful recourses I have seen on youtube for career and job preparation. I had an interview recently and I got the job. Thank you
My biggest challenge is balancing discussing my personal experiences and the ways in which my personal/professional goals align with that of the organization. I want to work battling homelessness and addiction at a non-profit or for a County Health Department. I have a personal narrative that demonstrates a deep personalized familiarity with the struggles faced by the target population. But is a cover letter really the time and place to introduce yourself as an addict in recovery???

Should scholarship candidacy & attending its pre- departure orientation workshops be referred to in resume & cover letter or the attendance certificate will do?
Cover letters are literally a load of shit, they don't provide any relevant information that isn't already in the resume and they never get read anyway. The only places that I've gotten jobs I've never provided cover letters, only providing a resume, yet I've been knocked back so many times when I HAVE given a cover letter. The modern day hiring process is stupid anyway.
Thank you for the in depth and practical trainings. Also we would be better focusing on our strengths at work than working on something we are not good at. I highly recommend everyone to understand what's natural strengths for them and choose to work in the job that brings more meaning and satisfactions.
Hi Professor Heather! What do you do when you are applying for a position through a recruiter? Do you address your cover letter to the recruiter? Thanks for your time!
O my goodness, Heather, you are so engaging. Just your personality alone was what kept me watching the video; I hope that one day I can find that. Well done, love the information and I learned some valuable Cover letter tips, but also the dissemination of information. Quick question - how much educational information do you suggest providing in a cover letter or resume?
Cover letters have really made a difference for me in my career. I feel like my response outreach increases in comparison to not using them. Just my personal perspective, but great video!
Thank you for this. What advice can you provide for providing cover letters when applying for jobs online though? Oftentimes, the company offering the job has online forms that simply require for fields to be populated with info, i.e. Name, Address, Phone, etc., and drop-down menus where you simply select an option such as "yes" or "no", then a field to type a cover letter. In those instances, an applicant has no control over formatting, font options, etc..
mreoski Applicant Tracking System. It’s the computer software HR uses that’s responsible for scanning your electronic resume and finding the relevant keywords. It determines IF a human (like the HR Manager) will read your resume AT ALL. (Sad, but true.)
This is all great advice, but what if you are just starting in the field and have no "accomplishments". This is what I really struggle with, how can I bring myself up when I have nothing.
Hi I have a question about a cover letter it’s asking me about a recipient do I put my name and information or what this is my first time please help thank you
What a fantastic video! I just started practicing writing cover letters again, and there is so much I didn't think about an now watching the video I Remember. I think I struggle with remembering all the details of the things that I know what Spotlight my achievements better and the wording that is the best way to describe them. Finding a way to explain the correlated value to the company is always difficult for me. I'm also in your Facebook group and I love it I'll probably head over in a little bit here :-)
Hi I am student who will be graduating soon. I have a question. Should I put the most relevant experience that's been a few years ago or should I put the most recent work experience that is not much related to the work by showing transferable skills ?
Just a general question. I have worked as a customer service representative for 2 years and I’ve done mostly co-op during high school. I’d like to know how can I make a interesting introduction based on this? I have 0 experience with Human Resource field. My plan is to go to college to get my degree in Human Resources but how exactly can I explain this complicated issue in my cover letter? I’m just confused at this point and lost and don’t know what to do.
This was a great video. I enjoyed learning the purpose of a cover letter and tips on focusing on the format, sparking interest, creating engagement and a call to action. These were key points that stood out to me because, this is what makes the cover letter interesting and outstanding. It’s like creating your own story and selling it in your cover letter. This is awesome!
How do you write a cover letter for a remote position? You also mentioned that a professor or someone with a long work history at a job may have a resume that is longer that one page. I can't find where I saw that.
It is also good to say something along the lines of "I would be happy to discuss this or any additional opportunities within your organization." This lets the recruiter know that you would be open to other positions within the company. The more you are flexible, the more they will go out of their way to consider you for something. Good luck with your job search.
Thanks for your help! The thing I struggle with is not really having much to offer a company. I am studying and seeking positions in Environmental Science, but don't have any related work experience. What problem can I solve for them? What accomplishment can I tout?
Thanks for this great video! My students just had the task to watch it and takes notes - it fits perfectly into our present topic. Since we're all on video conferencing (Corona rules), this is a valuable expansion (including native speaker English) for my lesson plan.
Why is it suggested that one include the company address when most, if not all, cover letters are sent digitally? I'm having a hard time seeing the purpose of this. What does it add to the letter, and is it necessary?
It took me a second to realize that the date on this cover letter example is actually the same date and today (except the year obviously). I’m working on my cover letter right now and this really through me for a loop 😂
Hello, I was wondering If I need one these in today time? I hear it isn't something you should do since employers are tired of the hiring process already. But, I know someone personally who doesn't submit cover letters and is currently employed. What does that say? I am applying for big entertainment companies at the moment what is your advice? I also do not have years of experience in the field I am applying for.
Great question! Yes, I believe cover letters are still super necessary. Even if the company doesn't ask for one. It gives you the chance to think about and write about your career story. Like, why do you want the job, where you are now in your career, where are you going, etc... Does that help!
Heather, I have a Master's degree in Forensic Sciences and specialised in investigation, but my work experience is in a completely different fields. I'm trying to apply for an entry level jobs. How can I write a cover letter based on my educational background? I'm having a hard time to put it all together.
@Ilaha Abdulla You want to first begin with a compelling attention-grabber then you want to make a list of your many skills, talents, and experiences that can be written as transferable skills. I’ve discussed 4 cover letter attention-grabbers on my channel.
Is there a template for the cover letter that would go with the style of the resume template? Loved using your resume template but would like to be able to create a cover letter to go with it
So happy you've found success with the resume template. There is a link to the Career Advancement Toolkit in the description below the video. The toolkit has a cover letter template and example + dozens of other templates and some really good video lessons. Let me know if you have any questions.
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin Wait, but what if it doesn't require one, but it also doesn't specifically state not to upload a cover letter? Should we still not send one?
@@joshuasamuel2122 If it doesn’t request one I usually send one along anyway. It’s a nice way to stand out from the others and is your opportunity to show more of your personality through it rather than just all the facts stated on your resume if that makes sense?! However if it specifically states a cover letter isn’t necessary I won’t send one but if there’s no mention I just attach one anyway. Hopefully this helps!

This lets the recruiter know that you would be open to other positions within the company. The more you are flexible, the more they will go out of their way to consider you for something. Good luck with your job search.
Thank you sister
kilo g hi there! Are you currently writing a cover letter?
Thanks for your help! The thing I struggle with is not really having much to offer a company. I am studying and seeking positions in Environmental Science, but don't have any related work experience. What problem can I solve for them? What accomplishment can I tout?
Amy, great question. What was your biggest accomplishment while you were in school?
Thanks for this great video! My students just had the task to watch it and takes notes - it fits perfectly into our present topic. Since we're all on video conferencing (Corona rules), this is a valuable expansion (including native speaker English) for my lesson plan.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for sharing this will your students.

When they don't mention a cover letter is that a negative or should we send it either way?
I think my biggest thing is I am always questioning if it's good enough. How do I know if I did it right or not?
Also is it okay to say that a family member that works for the company recommended me to apply?
I have experience in higher education and k-12. Im trying to get back into administration. Not sure how to lay oiut the letter
GOOD EXPERIANCE
👍
Professor, what font are you using in your cover letter? It look neat. Thanks.

Why is it suggested that one include the company address when most, if not all, cover letters are sent digitally? I'm having a hard time seeing the purpose of this. What does it add to the letter, and is it necessary?
What is the length of a cover letter and what do you engage in
My only thing is... it's very annoying and time consuming to build these for each company then get declined
It took me a second to realize that the date on this cover letter example is actually the same date and today (except the year obviously). I’m working on my cover letter right now and this really through me for a loop 😂
January 19th lol
I am a Bookkeeping Student with no experience what is your advice to me ? also can you help me ? thank you
This video was so helpful thank you!
Does that help!
how do make bullet points like that from side to side?
To Clarify: If the job application does not require a cover then I should not submit one. Correct?
Correct! Don't submit one if it says not to submit one.
@@josiej89 That makes sense, thanks.
The links on your website are not working. :(
Hi! Thanks for letting me know. Can you tell me which page you’re trying to get to?
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin Thank you for your reply! I emailed support just now. I was successful in downloading your resume sample/template. However the free LinkedIn class, LinkedIn template/helper, cover letter pages will take my name and email, then the browser says waiting for website and does not load.
Do you recommend that the cover letter has a subject line?
EVERYTHING. I never know where to start.
You really need to begin with an attention-grabber. I’ve discussed four types on my channel. ua-cam.com/video/I1aaxwoJfeI/v-deo.html

My biggest problem is adding all my volunteer work in a way that looks natural
Is it advisable to place a visual timeline of an individual's skill(relative to the job opening) and how it grows over the years in a cover letter?
Instead of wordy approach in explaining value propositions?

Where do I start?
