Great tips, Heather! Haven't written a cover letter in quite some time (all my moves have been internal to my company), but really great point on taking the time to know your audience and trying to find out who will be reading the cover letter. It's not unlike knowing your audience for presentations - helps give context and direction to how you approach the cover letter.
Hi Richard! Thanks for the comments. Yes, I totally agree. Super cool you also have a UA-cam channel. How long have you had your channel? Do you upload new videos every week?
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin About 8 months - still relatively new creator, so always nice to draw inspiration from great channels like yours! And yes, just a 1x/week cadence works best for my schedule.
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin Yes, it was very helpful! I’m an IT student and I’m graduating soon so I’ve been working a lot on my resume and cover letter. I learned so much from your video and appreciate the time and effort you put into this!
I am well educated but have not been able to develop a professional career. Is it a good idea to briefly mention that and how a lot of the skills and things I did at the jobs I've had are transferrable to the position I'm applying for? Thanks!
Absolutely, it’s a good strategy to highlight transferable skills from your diverse experience. Focus on how these skills align with the requirements of the position you’re applying for. It’s not necessary to mention not having developed a professional career, but rather, emphasize the positive aspects and what you bring to the table. Best of luck!
Hiring Committees with somewhat secret members are common in government hiring. Is addressing the cover letter "Attn Hiring Committee" appropriate? Hr officials doing recruiting aren't necessarily reading applications at these agencies and will not share names of hiring committee members until the search has closed, in order to preserve appearance that favoritism or nepotism is not occurring.
Great question! Yes, I believe you can address the hiring committee in your cover letter. However, rather than Attn I would write Dear. Does that help?
Indeed a very good question ! But in my case there is confusion, I know the names of those hiring people. One is " head of human resource" (who i am not sure will read my cover latter) and two of them are " recruitment afficsers" So I am not sure who to address 🤔. Can I just write Dear recruitment officer ??
I wanted to like the video, but the directions are very vague and provide little practical tools towards actually writing the letter. Some of the suggestion even go as far as suggesting that who you know inside the company will help towards getting the job, which is... known, and in fact a social problem.
Hi Heather, great advice thank you, just wondered if it is appropriate to address a recruitment office by their first name, such as dear Helen for example, the reason I'm asking is an officer has sent placement positions to our university and signed an accompanying message with her first name, as I haven't been able to find out if she is Ms or Mrs I was wondering if dear recruitment manager is a better approach in this situation.
Hey professor Heather! Great video! If I plan to use a friend as my source of discovering the position I am applying for should I use their name or just say “a friend told me”?
Great video Heather! Quick question....do we need to spell out the address (word for word) in the section to the hiring official? ex. would road be rd. or suite be ste? State NY or New York?
Another question for this, is it ok just to outright ask the company to whom the Cover Letter is going to be read by? Just so you know who to address it to?
One question I have about this, what is used at the end these days. Is it still 'Yours Sincerely', 'Yours faithfully' etc. or is that too old-fashioned? Is it dependent on tine of the company, or do people use 'Warm regards' more often these days?
Hello mam its wonderful to find and watch your helpful video,I want to ask a question regarding my Msc in clinical psychology can I find job in Canada or can i apply for emigration policy
Is there anything special we should put in our cover letter if you're going from one industry to another? For example, I'm an engineer my backgrounds in manufacturing, but I want to move to architectural/building engineering.
I disagree with Heather in finding a specific person to address your cover letter to. Inevitably you will get the person wrong, particularly in a large company. Having a potential employee exhibiting stalking behavior is unnerving and a red flag.
Good video BUT... plugging other videos literally between each point makes me want to click away, as it's frustrating and definitely does not motivate me to actually check the plugged materials/links/products/whatever. Food for thought.
Great question. When it comes to video interviews, dress as you would for an in-person interview. I have a new video coming on in the coming weeks where I'll show you exactly how to prepare for a video interview. Does that help?
I have heard you shouldn't put a picture of yourself in a cover letter or resume. But I want to, I feel like it would be more catching and just looking at someone gives you so much information about the person. You can see if they look friendly, or grumpy, extroverted or introverted, classy or trashy, sober(ish lol) or druggie etc. I feel like it would bring a personal connection when otherwise it's just a bunch of words like every other cv or resume. I should put the picture on the cv instead of resume correct? Oh and I was surprised that my cv letter is just as you recommended with one exception-I need to change to whom it may concern to hiring manager. Thanks for sharing!

Could you do a "cover letter" video for professional engineering jobs or maybe provide a link to one you've done? Thank you.
Before the video the cover letters I use would be around a 5 quality
After the video I realize I can make it an 8 or 9 quality cover letter
Thank you
So happy to hear you’re improving your cover letter. Way-to-go and thanks for watching.

Length matters, it shouldn’t be too long and too short. It needs to be able to get right to the point.
