Its a lovely sight to see a garter blue A4 with full valancing doing the exact thing its designer conceived it to do again - continuous high speed running.
Great capture. Fantastic to see the A4 doing exactly what it says on the tin! Seemed to be running well within herself. Thanks for capturing the moment, Regards Dave.
shame that shes not a 90mph a4 any more, during the test run and the runs, she proved just what an amazing engine she is and the amazing talent of her designer.
Oh, and write/speak they did. One of my neighbors in Illinois was a man names Harold Westphal, and he was a locomotive engineer back in the late steam era, he worked an engine on the Milwaukee Road, #265. It ran the hiawatha from Chicago to Minneapolis/St Paul via Milwaukee, and he would tell at points in Wisconsin between Wisconsin Dells and LaCrosse that he would top 110-120 to make time into Minneapolis. It was also said that Casey Jones had been doing 75-90 MPH moments before his wreck.
A lovely sight. I was in Aberdeen in the mid 60's and we had a number of A4's on shed at Ferryhill, Bittern amongst them occasionally, and, as we weren't so Health and Safety conscious then, we used to get a few footplate trips on them hauling the mainline expresses. The noise level on the footplate is incredible, even at slow speeds, about 40 mph, you can barely hear the whistle being sounded. I made a recording on 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley and coming into Forfar station there was a long blast on the whistle approaching the level crossing and you can only hear it if you listen for it very carefully.
Excellent shots. That's a new sound to me - never heard an A4 going that fast before. Looking forward to the Mallard event; I am visiting York on 6th July. I will also be buying your documentary. Thanks for capturing this magnificent spectacle.
This loco is underrated, along with all the other preserved a4s. Union of South Africa and Bittern will always be my favorite british express locomotives. Long live the A4s!
Absolutely magnificent ! We are all so privileged to have such a superb proud heritage in this country. Heartfelt thanks to the devoted enthusiasts who continue to make such events and sights possible. More power to everyone's elbows.................
Salivating at that! F.R.A. needs to let preserved steamers here in the States run that fast on track that can handle it! We've got several preserved, operating ones that were designed capable of 80-90+ mph, just nobody with the cajones/spine to push 'em that hard.
Great bits of footage. Virtually the same shot in the day time and at night. Fantastic contrast showing the two one after the other. Like a banshee screaming off into the night.
I'm old enough to have seen these wonderful things at full throttle in the early sixties. They weren't supposed to but I still believe my father calculated Lord Faringdon passing Hitchin at 103!
...steamtown so as you can imagine that had a major effect on me. I love hearing the banter to be honest. I was stood in a buffet in a small room with a small gathering of fellow railway modellers all ex drivers and personel from around the country. all was well and good but the conversations soon got heated and headed south when heated exchanges over designers riddles churchward gresley took place. I just kept quiet and grabbed some more pork pie. I darnt mention the word "DELTIC" lol Rob
Looks like it is going pretty fast. We had 38's reaching 90 mph and above here back in the 1970s. You can read my adventures on the Newcastle Flyer at steam train stories.
Eye I know all about the regions lol. I have been into railways all my life and encounterd the partisan traits of the railways. I always hope its humour and good sport but some guys take it so far. I love all the regions I guess I just was not expecting it to be a comment here. I guess I don't remember the regions but living near SVR and A4 being my fave locos I encounter the GWR rules fans and I love the GWR too, but when I was 10 I got to take the controls of 4498 at steamtown ......
If only it went 100mph...! Still, I never experienced a Steam Engine going this fast before! The Great Gathering event's going to be very special, I can tell.
The A4's have proved in the past they're more than capeable of over 100 Mph. Its about time they were givern the chance to prove they can still do it. Heres hopeing next time they let the driver push her a bit harder, looks like she wasen't even struggleing.
Where is everybody? Hi OVPRAILWAYS1, What time in the morning was the second video taken? a perfect situation for making a film, a wonderful subject, with nobody to get in your way !!
I wish they would let steam go that fast here in the states. You Brits certainty know how to get it done, I'd really love to visit the UK and see some steam out on the mainline. By the way does any one know when that locomotive that James May is helping build be ready? I believe it's called a p2 or something I could be wrong.
Hi Jared. It IS a P2. Be a few years yet tho' before it's built. They need to raise the cash. I think it amounts to a few million dollars to build a "one off!" Plenty of cheap flights and cheap accommodation when you get here. And plenty of working steam! Preserved railways and main line!
If you want to find out more about the P2 then is a website worth looking at,The P2 locomotive company and their sister website the A1 steam locomotive trust, they hoping at the moment that the p2 will be ready in 2020.hope this is helpful, regards.
essex locomotive enthusiast Thank you! Maybe I'll start saving up some money and by the time the P2 is done maybe I'd have enough money to come over and see her in action! idk how much it would be to go on vacation, or holiday over in the UK I'd imagine I would I would need at least 10,000 dollars which is probably around 7,000 pounds.
likoni02 It's pretty cool how they make brand new locomotives, they never do that over here unless it's some little dinky thing that doesn't go more then 10mph. I defiantly need to get over to the UK someday, there's a lot of things I'd like to see and do.
NiallMS1 This was the test run and was suppose to be conducted in secret (although it did get out eventually). However the main reason why there were not many photoraphers was because the night shot was taken at about 2:20am and the 2nd shot was about 6am.
See now, this is one of those dangers that poor fools who insist on racing trains to intersections don't realize: You can't really tell how fast a train is going until it's practically on top of you.
It's a common misconception steam locomotives couldn't achieve this. But that isn't truth. Truth is it wasn't always promoted. Truth is engineers would write about engines doing 60,70,80,90, 120 mph. These engines (European and American) have secret talents that man has yet to truly utilize. One of those things, is speed.
Love the steam trains speeding by at night. Reminds me of those old pre-war films.
This is my favorite locomotive, very beautiful. Best greetings from Germany.

The Hiawathas were 4-4-2 engines capable of over 100mph (160km)

When i was a kid, i always wanted to be a train driver. These men were my heroes. They rode steel and tamed the elements of fire and water.
That must have been awesome to see in person. Wish the US would lighten up and let the steamers open a bit more than they can currently. Great video!
Excellent shots. That's a new sound to me - never heard an A4 going that fast before. Looking forward to the Mallard event; I am visiting York on 6th July. I will also be buying your documentary. Thanks for capturing this magnificent spectacle.
GO GIRL GO!!!!!! THIS IS WHAT MADE BRITAIN GREAT BRITAIN, WONDERFUL ENGINEERING FROM SIR NIGEL GRESLEY
Couple of great shots! An A4 doing what it was designed to do. And doing it well!
Finally, true speed, well done Gresley, you made the finest engines in the world.

Superb stuff. An A4 doing what comes naturally, simply flying along.
A great video. Good to see an A4 doing what it was built to do, haul trains at high speeds.
Great bits of footage. Virtually the same shot in the day time and at night. Fantastic contrast showing the two one after the other. Like a banshee screaming off into the night.
Its nice to see one of these running flat out instead of 15mph on a preserved railway
Great shots David... a once everyday occurence but stunning to see in 2013..
Superb video and can't wait for the doc film. I bought one of your vids about 2 years ago and it was superb so thanks for sharing this preview! Ken
Just seeing her dart past like that is a sight to behold!
Great video!
God knows what's wrong with the people who gave this a 'thumbs down '
Thanks for posting.

Fantastic shot !
fantastic! thanks for uploading, sends a shiver down my spine, nothing is better than a Gresley A4 in full flight truly orgasmic !
Marvellous! That is a rare sight and one that has been captured very well on camera, well done
I hope we get to see something like this again!
She really was shifting, thank you for the upload, superb capture.
Awesome, Still delivering the goods after all these years!
I can’t believe you seem to be the only person there to watch!!
that's feckin line speed right there!!!
Streaks - look fantastic! Great video.
Stunning shots especially the second. Nice to see
Superb mate and thanks for sharing this rare moment !! Regards, Liam
Beautiful - great video shots!!
Amazing footage. Great video!
Great video. Amazing to think though that City of Truro did 100 mph in 1904!.
Great to see it .
Long time since I saw that .Still going strong after 70 odd years
Looks like it is going pretty fast. We had 38's reaching 90 mph and above here back in the 1970s. You can read my adventures on the Newcastle Flyer at steam train stories.
She sounded as if she were only ticking over and it was just too easy. What a treat you must have had!
Makes a great sound.
Great Video
Do you know what ! Thats truely amazing !!!!!!!
The great A4 locos a 5rue sight and sound of the lost era
Two great clips. thanks

EPIC OVERLOAD. They need to do this with diffrent locos!!!
Wow great shot...
Love the sound of an A4 and a rake of mk1's doing 90mph.
Music to my ears!
This loco is aerodynamic. That's why it is attaining a very high speed
Captured perfectly.
Hell yeah, the A4 class is amazing
A replacement for the HST?
fouloleron2002 no
even if it wasn't. why not? its aerodynamic, sleek enough to do 90......
@@eles2147 because it's slower than the hst
@@eles2147 it's also not as cool
@@wharris302 so you think, but thats ok
Awesome Vid.I am going to see her at stoke bank on June 27th.
Fantastic!
I think the bittern was designer based on mallard it was painted in blue that look like a streamliner a4 engine
OVP alias Cunning Plan Productions strikes again :P very well done mate
Nice Filming, tripod and steady pan!
Beautiful
Beauty
If only it went 100mph...!
Still, I never experienced a Steam Engine going this fast before!
The Great Gathering event's going to be very special, I can tell.
WONDERFUL......BRING BACK STEAM
Best thing is they used to do well above that every day

Beautiful machine
Looks like you and I were the only ones up early enough!
I cannot believe this was so long ago
Beautifulll!
Why does the region matter.. its an amazing site to anyone
I love sir nigel gresley
Impressive. How many cars that age can go as fast.
That's a really useful engine.
When and where was this, not seen any mention on UK Rail etc
Is there any chance of British Rail installing water troughs? Perhaps the steam people could fund the installation.
Very, very nice.
Where is it filmed?
Long live "REAL TRAINS" !!!
That was super
凄い❗一度は走る姿を見たかったです‼️
Where is everybody? Hi OVPRAILWAYS1, What time in the morning was the second video taken? a perfect situation for making a film, a wonderful subject, with nobody to get in your way !!
DEREK HARTLEY
Apologies for the extremely late reply, I did not see this question!
Just before 6am that 2nd shot was taken.
Britten: I FELL YOUNG AGAIN, WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO
The way I remember A4's - Thanks for the memories - happydaze Jon VK4CY
Very super speedy train..
Shouldn't matter ! It's a godsend they still allow steam on the mainline !!
I agree but what the hell has region got to do with this incredible site ?
Notice the keyword... "officially"
Wow, a like for me and into favourites.

Probably in bed asleep.
A very light load for Bittern.
Now that's how it should be
See now, this is one of those dangers that poor fools who insist on racing trains to intersections don't realize: You can't really tell how fast a train is going until it's practically on top of you.
She’s so beautiful at speed. Wish Nigel greasly would be allowed over 75 these days. Steam should be allowed faster
