When I first started playing drums, my fills were horrible. I never knew how to make them sound good, until I finally learned from some of my teachers to include the bass drum in some way (either linear or on the beat).
I was just playing snare and toms for all my fills and never knew how much better it sounded with the bass drum. So this lesson is for beginner - intermediate drummers who struggle the same way I did. I hope it helps you!

Sometimes I forget Jareds an incredible drummer, he's so nice to us beginners it's like you'd think he doesn't even play drums he makes it feel like you're learning everything with with him, and then you see this. It's nice. You're a fucking great teacher Jared. Viva Drumeo
so so true

That’s what be humble means.
I love how this slowly gets me out of my comfort zone.
Excellent lesson, Jared! Thank you for posting this on UA-cam! To the ill-informed person that "hates the sound" of Jared's voice, Jared is beloved in this community. He is an inspiration to me as well as many other drummers that are (mostly) self-taught except through UA-cam-based lessons. To Jared, thank you & God bless you.
You gotta love this guy.
My favorite drum channel.
Playing along is typically no problem for me but what I really like is getting better at writing and reading music.
you must have one of the best tuned drum kit in the planet.
The sound is obviously EQ`d big time tho.. the raw analogue sound is probably a whole lot different..
niggasjit but could be a p*rn in the ears right??
Can u change your youtube name please?
why should I?
+Larry Tate lol
Mate,we ALL feel like that! I've been playing drums for thirty five years and still when I watch certain drummers...some much younger than me i fell like giving up completely! But the trick is this......use their ability to spur you on,not crush your enthusiasm. It's VERY difficult to do...but that is something worth practising as a subject on it's own! Good luck and don't ever stop.
Another pirate. Ahoy matey. Where's the hub bub bub and a bottle of rum?
Very glad to hear you say Grandmas could do this.
Coz I am a Grandma! And I'm learning with Drumeo!
Thanks for the lesson, Jared. I've watched so many of your lessons and they're always clear and interesting.
And it helps that you're cute. 😆
You are an inspiration, please never stop making videos!
Jared, I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge freely with the rest of us. Ive been playing since 1964 and I pick up stuff from you all the time. So thanks~!!!
I'm a right handed drummer (drum set) but I'm a left handed snare drummer so I typically start with my left hand (unless indicated otherwise) so that fill where you start with your left hand works out perfectly for me.
Jared, your videos always help me spice up my drumming. Thanks :D
Excellent lesson on some really cool fills. I have been working on these and had some trouble with #4 and #5, but after doing them repeatedly at a very slow pace, they are starting to come together. Really fun fills and they are something that has a very practical use, I will definitely use these in my drumming.
I really love the sound of this kit!
Drumeo is awesome, excellent work!! Really digging this channel and the curriculum you provide. Thank you!
Amazingly sounding drum kit! Very well recorded - I love it!
"even your grandma can do it...." Darn your little taunting! Now i HAVE to practice this until i get it, geez! ;)
thank you jared falk
Jared, I have always enjoyed your vids and I have gotten a lot out of them.. Thanks for sharing.
Waoo, I really enjoy seeing you playing. I can see that you enjoy playing the Drums, and great lesson Jared.

Love the sound of your bass drum
This helped me so much, I have to play a 12 measure solo for my band and this helped me get an idea for what to play
Thank you Jared
Love the video! I've been feeling pretty uninspired in regards to drum fills as of late, so I'll definitely be giving these a go!! Excellent lesson :D
My fills have gotten so crazy! The good kind lol Thanks
This was a very helpful lesson. I've always struggled with incorporating the bass drum in my fills.
Really nice fells, simple and useful. Good Jared!
Sorry to generalize... I should've said "most grandmas" :)
is the EDGE system an app or what?
These are great lessons! Keep up the great work Drumeo! Don't heed words from haters, these drum fills and drum lessons are really helpful!
Hey Jared, i have watched your youtube videos and i really liked them!
18" Paiste Alpha Crash (cracked), and a 16" Paiste Signature China (bent). We put two broken cymbals together and they sound awesome!
thanks for posting this video its helped me quite a bit with my fills as i tend to be a little repetitive.
really cool video, well explained, more job to practice! thanks!
Grate lesson and top drummer. Always found inspiration from your lessons :)
Just tried it, it's really cool!
Try flamming the mid tom before the 16th note rest or playing it with the floor tom as well - sounds pretty awesome as well :)
Every time i watch one of drumeo's videos.. i feel i suck drumming ...
Nicolas Recalde Don't worry bro... every one is the same when they start or are learning for a year.... i am too! you'll get good
Nicolas Recalde the opening run made me feel like I suck at drums, your not alone
Nicolas Recalde As long as you keep learning don't worry about. Just always focus on getting better and you'll end where you want.
Nicolas Recalde I start drumming before 7 months. I played other instruments before so I learned faster than other people, but I still seeing that I´m getting better. I started to learn the open-close-handtechnique before 2 weeks and now I can already use it in my fill ins, but only if i´m not playing to fast. So this is how I learn, I``m looking for new techniques and do it till I get it. The same for rhythms oder fills. Sorry for my bad english. Sometimes I forget some words because of thinking to fast or I write it false :D
Nicolas Recalde The real question you need to ask yourself is does seeing skilled drummers inspire you to get better? Even people who've been drumming for years (i've been playing over 10 years) stare in awe of some drummers' performances, but that should inspire you to practice and reach that level eventually! I was once obsessed with the song "Toxicity" by System of a Down and i never thought i'd be able to play it in the near future, yet when i really just listened to the drums and seriously tried to break it down and play along with the song, i was able to play it entirely in just 3 months. Hope this motivates you to play!
thank you jared~
Such simple beats but they would make such a difference with fills!
you are amazing man.
you are awesome dude!!! Great job!
Every pattern I play and every fill I play and every combination between the two of them - I borrowed or I stole or I discovered them on my own and then found out it wasnt something new - I was just re-inventing the wheel. But I do agree - the fill does sound great~!
I'll check them out, thanks for the info.
Thank you so much, you make my drumming more creative!:)
This was great. I'm not a drummer but I do a lot of programming. It was great to hear the kick in the fills and the role it plays. Also, the way you have your kit miked for recording these it really sounds cool. Because I use sampled libraries, I miss that ringing that happens in the snare and toms and makes the kit sound so alive! Thanks for sharing!
comment on my life god damnt so positive and well put together, fuck yes. thank you
That's the beginning of the end of my strugle for making fills..... THANKS JARED !!!
yo this guy kills it on drums!!
I don't know why people give you thumbs down they must be extremely jealous you taught me so much stuff and really enjoy your work thank you for putting the notes up and thank you for not talking so much s*** and just really getting to the point keep on rocking my brother I learned from you
Hey Jared, great lessons and incredible didactics! I love practicing with your videos. Would you be so kind and tell me which software you use to generate drum notes (like the ones you can see and follow on the bottom at the video while you are playing)? Groovy greetings from Germany
awesome jared ! thanks for this inspiring and informative video. and for freeeeee
This actually gives me some awesome ideas...
Very interesting fills, a bit catchy with rythm breaks, I love it :p
Thanx alot man gret video! This helped me creat a few fills just added a few stuff and sounds great :)
Obrigado Jared! :D
Thanx for this!
Really simple and usefull!. Thanks very much body!
Addicting!
jared eres mi mejor profesor.
Thanks Jared - I've purchased two of your packages and enjoy these videos. I've been trying to learn/chart the fill going into and out of the guitar solo in Robert Palmer's Simply Irresistible. Your Roll #3 seems to contain the same elements - all I need now is to figure out how to order the elements :-P
hello jared i love the grooves at the beggining of the lesson, theres any lesson of that kind of grooves? greets from argentina
So great. I really enjoy watching ...awesome. I am new drummer now :-)
Very nice!
Thank you. I appreciate the info. I checked them out and seen several designs but nothing like yours. Oh well! Just hope to find something light and comfortable but still feel the pedal. You know?
excellent !
good vidéo !!
Wow I REALLY LIKE THIS VID
Hey Jared thanks again for another great video. But where do I go for some of the fills you did at the start of the prologue? Hot damn dude those were sick!
Wow i love this
awesome into bro
Your One of My IDOL :D (Y) Drumeo
jared , could you possibly show how you did the fills when you were messing around at the beggining of the vid ? cause it sounded awesome
Thanks for these cool ass lessons 😎
please Jared make a video on 'how to read drum notes'.....
on the second fill: if you lead with your left( instead of right) on the rack tom for the first part, it makes it easier :)
Very nice sir
Hi Jared, cool video man the fill you do right at the start of this video about 43 seconds in sounds absolutely incredible. I here fills like this a lot from really good drummers and can never work it out can you do a lesson haha :-) or can any one else give me some ideas to work on fills like that ... 43 seconds in UNREAL!!!!!
With the first fill, even though I am a right handed player I feel that it's more natural to start with the Left Hand on beat '&' of 3.
amaizing SOUND!
Thanks so much for this vid I love the Filll ideas I am a little disappointed b/c I thought this was going to be a lesson on the crazy drum solo//technique used at the beginning of the vid
Any way to do a video on that?
This rocked
Fill #2 - double all notes and it's a nice Metal fill I use sometimes
thank you for replying and reading the comments ! :)
Supper class thank u sir....
nice video!
I would suggest playing LRL on the floor tom for the first example. Try to have your dominant hand on the beat at all costs.
Yeah! That type of kick right there...thx
Nice!
hi jared, can you make a lesson like this but using doubles on the base instead of singles. its causing me some troubles. thanks for all the lessons.
The balance problem i have happens when i use double bass on fills. Like Snare x2 Kick x2 type of fills. The problem occurs when i switch to fill and then switch back to beat. I dont know if I make it clear but with this english this is the best i can do.
Did I see Jared play the slide technique at 0:44?? Right on! I thought he said he could only play heel-toe...
How do you do that closed hi hat thing in the third example? Are you closing it as you hit, or slightly after?
Thanks for this just what i needed. Can you do another one with more advanced fills adding the bass drum? PS can you get Larnell Lewis back on plz plz plz hes sick thanks for your tutorials.
muito bom cara obrigado
the most advanced level of this
John Bonham Crossovers
What is that stack on the far left? I love the way it sounds.
I think Jared has gotten better since he's started bringing in other great drummers to do lessons.
Hey Jared, what time signature is that in the beginning? I couldn't seem to count it out.
hello I'm from Brazil I would like to know which method you are using where can I FIND? Thank await response
The lick at 0:43 to 0:48 is great. What rudiments/sticking is it?
Hey Jared, nice lesson man. Always learning something new! Some very strange Net Trolls commenting here...? Your answers are always gold... :)
