In this lesson, I show you a simple exercise that I like to use in order to get comfortable with a new drumming setup, as well as build speed around the kit. The concept was inspired by a recent lesson with Stephen Goold called "The Purpose Of Paradiddles" which you can check out in the Drumeo Edge members area if you're a member.
Remember, speed is useless without control. Use this as a tool to build technique, endurance, and most importantly: CONTROL!
P.S. Sorry about the Rick Roll in the beginning, but I had to do it :) I don't think I'm a superstar drum educator, nor am I endorsed or sponsored by Booster Juice haha!
BIG thanks to all my gear providers:
Sean from Yamaha Drums Canada
Andrew from Paiste USA
Larry and Jim from Evans and Pro-Mark
Ronn from Dunnett Drums
Just realized that for those of you who don't skip the ad, you actually may think this was sponsored by Booster Juice and not a joke to try and RickRoll you... Well, it wasn't sponsored. I had just got back from there for lunch and needed to film these lessons so I brought it on camera with me and this was the result. It is very good juice, but I am in no way professionally affiliated with them and they didn't pay me to do this, I just enjoy their product.
HAHAHAHA, people need to learn: no logo = HUGE mistake or not ad.
but i really enjoyed the gag ahhahaha
***** I'm glad you knew that was a joke :)
You should have Casey Cooper come play as a guest. His UA-cam channel is Cooper drummer.
Matthew Ballard I know of Casey... Very good drummer and seems like an awesome guy. Hopefully one day we can host him on Drumeo.
Drumeo Are you guys endorsed by any other companies than Paiste and Evans? Like any drum manufacturer like yamaha or casey cause I see those brands in a lot of your vids. Just curious
Beautiful Jared. As a very broke drummer I can't afford to purchase any thing from your website but the you-tube uploads that you produce are keeping me drumming. Many thanks.
Great lesson! Love how high the strokes are on the tom Diddles. Tough to maintain that clarity on the turnarounds!
Excellent warm up lesson. Whether on the set or on the practice pad. I've seen cordination results in 1 day. It helps a lot.
Jared, I love you! You're so articulate in your lessons and calm, as well as clear spoken. I've been looking for this type of lesson for a while, and really making my paradiddles mean something on my kit when practicing. Thank you.
Really helpful and i'm definetly gonna try it, you're a star Jared! Great playing and good explaining, gonna subscribe for sure!
Man that left hand lead coming back up the kit is really what makes this a masterful little exercise!
Thank you for showing each step on the toms in relation to the sheet music!
man, this was just sick all around.
you rock!
That is an amazing kit and miked up to perfection!!!
This is really awesome... got to learn this...
Jared perfect excercise ! Helps a lot ! Thank you .
Great vid ! fluidity around the kit is awesome , great excercises
Excellent technique for paradiddles. What a benefit this is to me. Thank you.
Very cool exercise! Thank you!
Loved this lesson Jared!
Love this exercise. I practice on an electric kit. The pads are small so its very easy to hit the rim when playing quick fills. This exercise helped greatly. Thanks!
This was awesome, I can't wait to try this. And the ad was great, too. :)
Loving this already
Sounds great in fast tempo! Thanks for the lesson.
so glad you love your Yamaha drum kit! I use to work for Yamaha, it's a great company!
Alhamdulillah, ada kemanisan dc2 tuan.
Terima kasih.
Mantiaeppp 👍
Great way of using the toms, to specifically know where the paradiddles begin and end! Maybe this way will not be as confused as doing on a pad. Thanks Jared! :)
Just did this for about an hour and after my brain stopped hurting this has helped so much!
GREAT lesson & these Yamaha drums sound great!
Best way to start a video ever :D
Jared, I must say you have come a long way from the so so drummer I first saw years ago! Way to go!!!

Those toms 😱 They sound amazing
This is so much fun to play. I like the fact that starting back on the left , my foot petals work is challenged.

I have been drumming for around 6 months now, drumeo has helped me get started and whenever I feel like my technique is lacking I just consult one of your videos. Thanks for your help, Drumeo!
Sir, your greate supper class thank u sir....

How many drum sets do you have!? Love your videos! I want a new drum set so bad
The 180bpm looked like it was in fast forward. Amazing how you can play that.
guys um I been playing for years now and I need to learn more beats, I have way more fills lol but the drums are the best, I go threw this every few years and I hear beats in my head it sweet and great lesson jared, have you been to Ferndale Washington? or fair haven
Great lesson Jared! Look before you click... the drum lesson was awesome too. :)

So nice DRUM pale
That intro xD almost tricked me with that skip ad button, good lesson though, thank you! :D
The sound of the rack toms its simply amazing.....Jared....you moved to Yamaha?
I've always owned Yamaha Drums, for the past 15 years now.
Pearl for days
I care that's who
Love paradiddles
I don't use booster juice, I just brew coffee with Red Bull instead of water...
Ima staring this at 190. Like a boss. Nah, just kidding. Just hearing the initial explanation made my brain explode.
1:15 "It doesn't fit with any sort of music right now"
Oh, you never heard about a little band called Meshuggah?
yea they are really little band xd
everything is a crash...
XD hahaha Thomas is a beast \m/
yeah, I mean its also perfect for any showoffy song ending in metal ever...
Bad beat lol
toms sound often which evans heads are those? want to switch off demo pinstripes
God I love that snare.
Beast mode.
Do you have a recommendation for how to do this with a 4 piece kit?
1:15 have you ever heard of meshuggah? i'm sure they could use this pattern for a whole song ;D
I can think of quite a few genres where this would fit in a song well
I've been playing drums for our praise and worship and I'm still having trouble finding the 1. I'm also still getting inverted. How can I stop this what can I practice to keep from doing this. Any advise would be helpful
I like it
Insane! How does it sound at 220 bpm?
How much time would you recommend me to practice this for a day?
Nice one jared hahaha xD
AAAAAAAHAHAHHAHA GOT ME GOOD. This is why I love Jared
Great video as always Jared. What kind of drum set is that?
It's a Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple. Sounds very distinct and I love it. Very different from your Sonor kit's sound.
I just got a new drumset and I really like it, but the only thing is, it has 1 rack and 2 floors... Would it be harder in your opinion to do it on one of those sets instead of one with 2 racks?
would it be possible to do a video for folks who play four piece kits?!
Jokes on you Jared, I like that song! ;) But in all actuality I watched the entire thing without clicking it and then read the comments and got curious to what it was so I went back and clicked it xD
This would be really good for a pedal work out too.
