In this video I share my thoughts on Mike Figgis' "Leaving Las Vegas", a film for which Nicolas Cage won the Oscar and the main actress, Elizabeth Shue was nominated for one (magnificent performance!). The story is very bleak and depressing, but the film features stunning performances of both lead actors, whose characters are desperate for the most simple of human relationships. If you can put up with the dark subject matter, you will find the film to be an amazing tale of two people looking for basic human connection and relationship.

I always thought the movie boiled down to two broken people finding momentary happiness together. Its also about two people who completely accept each other flaws and all.
That is a great summary, absolutely spot on!
Great review, thank you for sharing.
A flawless movie encapsulating everything that is good and bad about we humans. Great review Struan-refreshing to hear someone with an opinion these days.
Thank you for the kind words and what a perfect summary of the film. I am really glad I watched it, what an experience.
It's an amazing film, actually more of an experience, because you see the filp side to their character rolls, how Nicolas cage is by himself and what shue goes through in her day to day job . You can really tell how much she loves him in parts too, they both nail their rolls. Also shue is absolutely gorgeous in this film too.
Fullheartedly agree, there's so much to find in the portrayals here
I've seen reviews rejecting this movie as a romance because it's depressing and dramatic. I disagree. It's the most realistic depiction of two deeply flawed, lonely and broken people who find a short-lived moment of acceptance from each other in world that unanimously rejects them. It's not purely about alcoholism or prostitution. You can take that out of the movie and replace it with abandonment and severe depression and it wouldn't change what the film is about at its core. I don't even know if it's truly about love. I think they both think it's love but they need each other because there is nobody else for them out there. Elizabeth Shue even quips at one point that she's using him but I think there's more truth in her words than she would like to admit. She wants to feel needed and he wants to have some sort of remnant of his old life in a relationship before the end. It's a beautifully tragic story that I could only ever watch once but that will leave a long-lasting impression on me. Cage deserved his Oscar and this was probably Shue's best performance in a serious role
This was more Drama Romance
I agree with you this was Elizabeth shue best performance
I watch it as a character study. Very well written film.
I just watched this for the first time last night and you hit the nail on the head with this review.
Thank you for watching and your kind words. It's definitely an experience you won't forget soon.
the most unrealistic part of this movie is that a prostitute falls in love with a drunk.. or that a prostitute falls in love with anyone for that matter
Finally saw this gem. Fucking love Shue!
Absolutely, she's great. If you're looking for her more current work, I definitely recommend The Boys.
Thanks for the tedious explanation of the movie (with no spoilers.) At least the thick accent made it mildly humorous.
Thanks for watching, glad I could entertain at least a little
@UCNVq5utju_WZ7N2tjAu6r0Q you’re a good sport - great review also, don’t listen to this shit head
It is sad what happened to his career. I have enjoyed many of his films, in which he did a great performance in many of them. Now you just see him in low-budget films and you can tell he is just not trying as hard as he used too. Gone in 60 Seconds and The Sorcerers Apprentice were my favorites.
Absolutely, I certainly have some favourite films with him in them and after Leaving Las Vegas it does seem such a shame that he's no longer doing the same quality nowadays. Fingers crossed he'll get back to form to go out with a bang.
Thanks for watching!
Check out Mandy, fairly new and Nicolas Cage does a good job on it
Syco Fire -I will, thank you for the suggestion. I was really rooting for a sequel to the Sorcerers Apprentice, but I doubt that will happen.
I still can't believe how did Nick Cage managed to give such a stellar performance worthy of Oscar. LLV is probably one of the saddest movies I've ever watched and I felt like somebody kicked me in the stomach for hours.. Oh yes, the music score is underrated. I think it's one of the top 5 scores in movie history. Some of the songs were composed and played by the director Micheal Figgis.
It's certainly hard to watch this film and it to not affect you in some way.
An honest review of a brilliant film! 😎👍🏻
Thank you, that's very kind!
Good review m8
Thank you for watching!
Nick is very convincing here..actually I know someone who acts just like that who is an alcoholic ,,so much it distracts me a bit as I see him instead of Ben
That sounds heavy, hope your acquaintance is doing ok, though.
@@flyingwiener8946 hahah he is. My stepdad actually. But well mum is tough so I guess he does well now without drink for days. Good for him he is almost 60 so he should
But whenever we drink he acts exactly how nic does here when it hit his spot.
Agreed Elisabeth Shue was robbed. Never expected that from the girlfriend from Karate Kid!
I didn't know she was in Karate Kid, been probably 20 years since I saw that film. Should do so before I watch Cobra Kai on Netflix.
This was a good movie
Movie feels like a cartoon. Real people dont act like this.
