Christiane F. Wir Kinder vom Bahnhofszoo | Film Review
#christianef #film #review
00:21 - Some background on the film
02:06 - David Bowie is all over the soundtrack!
02:36 - Plot of the film
06:51 - A difficult, bleak film
08:16 - Acting gets better over time!
09:30 - DAVID BOWIE IS ALL OVER THIS
11:02 - Summary & closing thoughts
12:32 - Outro
This week I'm talking about a German film from 1981, which you absolutely must watch if you're a fan of David Bowie! Christiane F. Wir Kinder vom Bahnhofszoo is a difficult film to watch, however, because it's about teenagers becoming addicted to drugs and it even involves child prostitution. Therefore be warned but if you can stomach it, it's a really good film that works really well as a PSA regarding drugs.
David Bowie is not only all over the soundtrack (mainly the Berlin trilogy, as this film is set in Berlin at the end of the 70's), he even appears in the film and sings "Heroes" with a German chorus. It's quite the treat if you're a fan of his and elevates the film to an entirely different level.
Thank you for supporting the channel, I really enjoy talking about sci-fi and other films. Let me know in the comments below what you thought of this film and if you have recommendations for others.

What Wes Ball did with this movie astounded me! Continuing the story of Caesar by exploring his legacy as an almost religious figure was brilliant. They play the River plate gesture very well. And its totally different from across the Andes here in Chile. Which is conveyed in the movie. The Chileans show a colder demeanor. The Strauch cousins even look like a typical Germanic South American descendants, much more composed .

@@marcelsirer the accent and the gestures. River Plate people are much more extrovert in their speech. Chileans are generally more inwards with the movement of hands and arms. You can see it with the muleteer, a humble man who is also a gentleman, holding his hat against his chest when he’s at the police station. The air force colonel calmly realizing the news and placing the pin. That’s Chilean. The radio where the survivors hear Nando and Roberto is clearly Chilean. They pronounce “uruguayo” with a soft Y, as opposed to River plate people who stress it out . You can’t tell but also the Argentine actors do a great job doing Uruguayan accents. You can tell the difference if you compare the actor who plays Canessa in the film and in any interview he holds.

@@robertoperezcastro6130 Yes argentinians do a lot of gesturing. Because as the host of the video said. Is there a gesture for spanish as there is on italian? And Buenos Aires speech is pretty much Italian. Not so much in Uruguay that is more influenced from Spain. They do a lot of gesturing but is not "the gesture" for spanish. As there are so many countries and ways of speaking it, I Dare say there is not a gesture for spanish. There could be many and from very specific regions not one gesture for the spanish language.

Come and see - is THE best anti-war movie ever. Nothing compares. Nothing comes even close. To me, this one is just another "look how bad the Germans were" type of movie. I'd be interested to see what these movies would look like in a US military context. Like black people used as cannon fodder and then never again mentioned anywhere in history. Or just even all the poor and low-income kids getting recruited for the same fait. But at least they reaped some of the glory. However, this isn't a bad "anti-war" film. I actually enjoyed it.

LLV is probably one of the saddest movies I've ever watched and I felt like somebody kicked me in the stomach for hours.. Oh yes, the music score is underrated. The 1930 and 2022 are both great films, in their own ways. I'm glad you mentioned Volker Betelmann's score - it really fits the film and the use of silence is also right on the money, imo. I read the book a very long time ago and I'm going to read it again. Btw, thank you for not mangling the German language - though I see you live in Vienna, but thank you all the same! If you're in the mood for another grim watch then I can recommend 'Come and See', set in WWII. I don't know the Finnish film but I'll have to track it down. Best wishes

    • @flyingwiener8946

I haven't read the book, so the story was all new to me. The score has really stuck with me, especially that deep droning "gong" which hit every now and then but silence is absolutely used well too, you're right. I'll take note of "Come and See", thanks for the recommendation.

  • @monsterhobbiesaircraftmilitary

I've now seen both versions and I have to say that the 1930 version is better because it's 100% into the "Story" of it all. The new 2022 - 2023 version seems to miss that and tries to shove true "History" into it, so I wasn't sure if I was watching a "Story" movie or a "Historic" movie. The new version also seemed to have lost the "soul" of the original. But please don't get me wrong. The 2023 version had great moments in it. It was nice to see the French St Chamond tank in action instead of the standard British Mark II tank that appears in practically every WWI movie. It also had some "hommoge" moments in it where they re-created scenes or had Easter eggs from the 1930 film. I enjoyed that aspect. IDk...just having the "Historical" scenes, like the Germans meeting the French in the rail car, the "Statistics" of how many people were killed flashed on the screen at the end...etc...all added in that "Historical documentary" element in there that I personally think they didn't need and messed the direction up a bit. But again, IDk how a 2023 "Clone" version of the 1930's movie would have been either.

I like both versions for very different reasons and feel both can definitely be enjoyed. Hopefully people do check both out, as they each have their own interesting aspects but I totally see what you mean with the modern one focussing more on actual history. Thanks for commenting!

It's an amazing film, actually more of an experience, because you see the filp side to their character rolls, how Nicolas cage is by himself and what shue goes through in her day to day job . You can really tell how much she loves him in parts too, they both nail their rolls. Also shue is absolutely gorgeous in this film too.

I was actually a driver for the actors on this film, I'm in the scene playing pool when Robert Carlyle walks into the pub and let's off the flare, 8 fellas playing pool are all the actors drivers, great film.

Wow that's cool, thanks for that factoid. You don't get to chase Robert Carlyle every day, haha

9:57 Was watching Psychology in Seattle review and one guy said his 6 year old daughter was bored and left during episode 1 never to return. His 11 year old girl was interested and stayed the whole way through the season, got about 60% of it and asked lots of questions.

Yeah I totally understand that, absolutely not for young kids who are expecting a colourful Star Wars story with many different worlds, animals and fun adventures. But there are a lot of those Star Wars stories already out there, so it's great we're getting more variety!

If you can find that TV version, it's actually very good (though on more of a budget, as you say).

If I do come across it, I'll check it out. Thanks for suggesting, I'm pleased to read that it's also worthwhile.
