      most people would rather be an actor vs the job they're doing now. If most of the world would love to do a job for cheap then you simply don't have to pay them much. Even if somehow you became a millionaire from hiring them. This is simple supply and demand, a concept artist types don't understand.

    • @Blahgirl283
      @Blahgirl283 10 місяців тому +42

      Truly! Over 80% of “working actors” don’t meet the $27,800 annual threshold to even quality for health insurance. Not to mention; fair residuals need to come back. Being an artist and dedicating years/decades to craft and training - whether or on set or through a number of degrees - should be properly compensated across the board. And it should be established that AI technologies can’t be used to rob performers of their likeness and pay. I don’t agree with the comment saying “it’s just supply and demand.” It’s just greed and hoarding and capitalism finding ways to justify cheapening the costs of labor while the labor struggles to survive even more. Much like the stagnancy of the minimum wage for decades competing with the rising cost of living and higher education - it’s the few building and hoarding wealth on the backs of the many. Good on them for striking. Hoping good comes from it.

    Since I'm already seeing people saying this in the comments, one thing I want to point out is that while it does seem counterintuitive, do not cancel your subscriptions to a steaming service if you haven't done that already. The union hasn't called for people to do that yet for a reason: it diminishes the already dwindling residuals to workers, and the AMPTP will use the uptick in cancelations against them to undermine the strike and pay them less (because it feeds into the narrative that streaming is "unprofitable" and "risky"). Also, if you do it now, it won't have much leverage or impact if the union does call for a boycott later on. If you really want to support the strike financially, pitch some money if you can to The Entertainment Community Fund, which directly goes toward all workers who are affected by the strike.

    as an artist, a lot of AI is so damaging. it makes me so sad that we're using AI to 'replace' artists, actors, writers, and other creatives. we should be using AI to help, but none of what people have been using it for has been helpful at all. artists have been struggling since October/November 2022, people have been telling us that "AI isn't going to steal your jobs!" "suck it up and adapt" "no one cares" and yet Secret Invasion on Disney + has an entire intro that was made by AI, stealing the jobs of the artist/animators. that's a Marvel show!! they can absolutely afford to hire staff with skill and talent to create that intro, but no! instead they gave us a cursed sequence of images warped into one another. it upsets me that this is how things are now, and legislation should be put forward ASAP. even the creators of these generative AI softwares have publicly spoken about how scary things can get and how fast AI can spiral out of control. we all need to take a massive step back and reevaluate how important quality over quantity is - i don't understand why anyone would want to consume lots of shitty artwork and media on a daily basis made by AI that literally provides nothing new to the table (because AI cannot take 'inspiration' in art). i don't care if tv shows, movies, games, or art takes time - it NEEDS time to be good. it feels like all of the entertainment that is out there right now is almost treated in the same way as fast fashion is and i hate it. things are getting turned over too fast, people are getting replaced after they've been burnt out to a crisp like it's nothing - and all of it is done so that CEOs who already have more than enough money, keep earning more. they profit off of our ideas, our work, and our dedication, whilst we sit there and get told to "suck it up" as we struggle to pay rent. it's so depressing and things NEED to change.

      @@wooshieyFirst of all, I love the reply back and nothing but facts.
      Second, I agree. When the discussion of AI writing and creating "art," so many of the creatives were so nonchalant. They called me and other people "paranoid," and that it would only be used as a tool. Rolled their eyes and dismissed the scary and pressing concerns of creative careers being mostly or fully replaced with AI. AI is capable of creating real art and images and writing real scripts, and they dismissed it think it was only going to be used a tool? This is the advancement in technology that businesses and corporations have been waiting for. I couldn't believe their naivete to think that these things wouldn't replace their jobs and only be used as a tool when corporations didn't intended for it to be merely used as a tool, but a whole replacement for that actor, artist, and writer. AI can do the work for practically nothing.
      But we were called paranoid, unrealistic, etc in late 2022. Now months later one of the demands is that AI don't replace the actors and writers. We done warned folks too optimistic about AI that this would happen.

Also, Sydney Sweeney “Cassie” herself talked about it earlier this year that she couldn’t stop acting because she wasn’t being paid enough from any of the shows and movies that she was in….Now she received backlash from that because people think that actors and actresses are filthy rich, and Sydney had just bought a new home with her fiancé (they bought it together with their money combined) but in reality…..so many celebrities are not being paid well at all. So it doesnt matter how many times people are rewatching old shows the company isn't profiting. So how can they give hefty residuals when they aren't making money off those shows being played. They have to pay for budgets, creatives, and the employees who work the service. Not to mention they spend more than they make yearly. But Netflix is the only studio that mainly gets its income from streaming, the others such as Disney, WB, Amazon, Paramount, etc don't rely primarily on subscribers to pay the bills.

The way Marvel treats editors for example is not okay at all and shouldn’t be tolerated.

These strikes will just swift resources from US productions to foreign productions and, as a viewer, I can't help but welcome that change. Also wanted to mention that as a regular person you can have an impact on these big corporations and this strike by cancelling or limiting your subscriptions to streaming services.
    As regular people, these execs will only listen to the power of our dollar and if they see their numbers of subscribers and thus income go down and have to explain that to shareholders, that puts the unions at a much stronger bargaining position.

    • @yeeyeeyeeye
      @yeeyeeyeeye 10 місяців тому +14

      Actually, boycotting or canceling your subscriptions to streaming services when the union hasn't called for one yet is really bad for a few reasons:
      1. This diminishes the already dwindling residuals to the lower level employees who are stuck with these companies, plus they will use the uptick of cancelations to pay their workers less because streaming is "new and risky".
      2. Doing it now will be less effective when the union does ask for you to boycott later on.
      If you actually want to help as a regular person, pitch some money to the Entertainment Community Fund, which will ensure that your money goes to all of the workers affected by the strike.

    Word of warning…do not underestimate how many people either do not care or actively want Hollywood shut down. You have noticed the seemingly unending string of critical and commercial flops that we have had? Make whatever excuse you want, but how many people are losing sleep over season 2 of she hulk getting delayed. Or the remakes of gladiator and Beetlejuice? I believe that if studios had not marketed or released several of this summer’s flops they would have actually lost LESS money. I realize my examples are all Disney. These flops are important because their profits is what would have funded smaller films from those studios. I agree that the the landscape has changed and that AI, image use, and streamings impact on residuals needs to be negotiated, but this seems a particularly bad time to demand more money. Studios may now use the strike to outright cancel projects they know are going to flop. Unlike the possible UPS/teamsters strike for example, this strike only impacts those really looking forward to entertainment products coming out of Hollywood….given the ratings and the box office of the last year….good luck with that.

    I’m a BG(background) actor and crew member myself, but I’m non-union. The whole issue with AI is pretty scary itself for Union actors who have “rights” which what the SAG is fighting for, and it’s crazy because the way most Non-Union BG actors get eligible to join the Union is through 2-3 SAG waivers (when you’re allowed to work as union member due to various factors). If studios were to do what they are proposing to do, that will be especially hard to get those waivers, because studios would technically own our likeness forever as well.

  • @amber_b1723
    @amber_b1723 9 місяців тому

    I think the lessening wages is due to two main reasons, the current ways entertainment media is displayed, on streaming causing residuals to be small or non existent to the cast and writers since when shows get purchased to be put on streaming the streaming site pays over 30% the production cost for the rights to stream older shows, so any residuals go to them. The streaming company takes the risk of the show flopping, and when it succeeds it take the profits. Also the current quality of shows and movies produced has been diminishing, both because streaming sites are trying to provide as much content as they can to retain views and because it's cheaper to produce many low quality works than few really good works, but this has resulted in audiences not watching movies, not going to theaters, and many movies getting so many bad reviews that the faith in the company to produce good movies and shows he's diminished, which results in many movies losing money and many residuals not existing, or even if they do, they do not make up for the millions lost. So it's a combination between being oversaturated with low quality movies and shows and the business form of the streaming services. I don't know if it's entirely realistic for companies to pay actors and writers more from failing projects. Maybe the strike will change things for the better or maybe it'll force these companies to use AI to fill in for the actors and writers.
