- On September 11, four Air India pilots on board the flagship flight from Delhi to New York faced one of the most dangerous situations imaginable. They were low on fuel with multiple systems failing in their Boeing 777 aircraft. With zero visibility over the New York area, it was proving to be impossible to spot the runway. In this exclusive interview, the senior commanders on the flight finally break their silence and explain just how bad the situation was when they somehow managed to land in Newark, an alternate airport.

It's commendable how they are respectful of each other as colleagues and admiring each others support. No senior junior hierarchy.. No trying to take all credits. Great team work

New York and September 11th don't sit well together!! Had not realised that this was the date of the incident. Also - 'See Emily Play'?....had to rewind that bit as it seemed so incongruous in these circumstances. Respect to these super cool aviators!

did you guys know something was up? i remember having a missed approach at jfk before with some large boeing, and we weren't even told what was up until we were in a holding pattern, it was quite confusing. (that was pretty good weather, and yet the captain was like "whoops, we just didn't see the runway in time, so we had to go around"... to his defense, the 2nd approach was the smoothest, smoothest landing)

The calmness of pilots is an understatement. The way they landed, Air India’s pilots are built different.
What's even harder to fathom is that they flew this plane back the very next day - empty, but still. I believe I'd hesitate. Then again, perhaps they had better mechanics than the ones who let them leave India in that condition. Props to these amazing pilots. Namaste, y'all.
The only thing keeping air india going is that they choose the best pilots. I heard the whole ATC conversation, that guy has nerves of steel. Didn't lose composure of his voice even once.

Condolences for pilot Lion Air from India Bhave Suneja , he hard to try battle with flight control but the error MCAS system couldn't save the plane , respect for pilot 😑
I have a question. Lets suppose you are aviating an aircraft and the collision avoidance system goes offline in midair. The collision which is supposed to happen with another aircraft should be having their collision avoidance system working. In that case, can't the other aircraft warn the faulty aircraft of the potential collision possibility and avoid the entire situation?
Man!!! I was waiting for the whole 25 mins thinking they will at least simulate and show us something on that Sim and simulating the gravity of the situation they had on 101. If you wanted to conduct just an interview, your channel should have made them sit in a much comfortable manner like in your studio or something...

These pilots did an amazing job. It's not easy to grasp what they were dealing with, which was a whole lot. I listened to the ATC clip and, even with lights and horns blaring, they were incredibly calm and, if I recall correctly, not once did they ask for ATC to repeat an instruction. The right team was on board to deal with this one. Congratulations!!
Best to listen to the pilots full conversation with ATC to fully understand the problem and the incredible coolness of these 4 men!

I'm also amazed at their calm and clear thinking with so many failures. I wonder did the passengers know that there was a problem - did they share anything with the passengers that they may need to prepare for a difficult landing toward the end?
They did reportedly just say to the attendants to keep the passengers well buckled to their seat belts

They had 7.5 tones of fuel on board ,at the speeds they where doing that's just shy of 1.5 hours of flight time remaining for a 777 , they had a cloud ceiling of 400Ft , 1 altimeter still working and radar vectoring from ATC , the plane was still flyable ,they did a great job Aviating , as trained pilots i would like to think the 370 souls on board where never in danger - Aviate - Navigate - Communicate none of the 3 where compromised - Hero's ? Good pilots for sure !

8 out 10 flights with similar instrument failures meet with disaster for sure.
And the rest 2 who survive, are only because of well planned crew and Pilots. And I am proud that Air India follow the world's most difficult Pilot training manual before handing over the cockpit for international schedule.
They are really brave heroes of our country. Kudos

It was all about basics....landing cessna172 when they were in flying schools without ILS approaches and all the navigational instruments helped them.....and thumbs for their calmness and professional approach towards this failure👏👏👏

Thank God they remember practices in flying club. Show us once again, pilot should keep their basic skills of stick n rudder, or even keep practicing in their flying club. Also once again, thank God there are 4 of them in the cockpit, so they can share burden and brainstorming thru CRM (just like UA232 n QF32). Bravo,, aviators! Stay safe all

The kind who ignore critically low fuel levels until they're running on fumes whilst flying past at least 20 airports capable of taking their aircraft? No thanks. Pilots like that are the kind who used to kill people regularly until drummed out of civil transport across most of the civilised world.
Do you even realise you’re being so ignorant. They weren’t running low on fuel. They had just enough fuel to land the aircraft at the destination on any other normal day under normal regular circumstances. They only were short on fuel because of the weather conditions and all the unfavourable circumstances the aircraft was under right when they reached the destination. They knew they had to make some go-arounds or follow alternate approaches that required more fuel or land at alternate airports. All of which wasn’t predicted earlier. It’s no fault of the pilots. Things like technical issues and weather conditions can go wrong at the very end sometimes with not enough time for the captains to foresee them and be prepared. Hence this was an adversary which necessitated more fuel and not one that they knew of before. If it were a normal situation,all the fuel conditions would’ve been just fine. Pls appreciate the adeptness and coolheadedness of these heroes under such critical conditions that saved 370 lives for friks sake and be less of a snob maybe?

1) Pilots land manually most of the time
2) LNAV/VNAV approaches are not conducted as frequently as ILS approaches but they do exist and are covered in training manuals
Yes but they were low on fuel they had lost both radio altimeter and other systems and the weather conditions were very bad

Pilots need a minimum of a 600 feet cloud ceiling to land and align properly to the runway by manual approach, but it was 400 feet in this case and they did it successfully.
They could not attempt to land manually before that because it was 200 ft at one airport and 300-something feet at another. Really dangerous.
Moreover, it was the last chance to land, there was no fuel for a go around. Multiple equipment failures including everything that helps you land with minimum visibility, as well as the instrument that lets you in on the altitude.
What part of the terrible weather and multiple instruments failure to assist with very low visibility landing did you not get?
Moreover, the pilots decided to add 800 kilos of extra fuel just for a case of emergency, which was eventually the difference between life and death of 300 souls. If anything, the pilots deserve more credit than they already do.
One's only complaint should be that Air India did not reveal the report/reason for this almost fatal technical issue and kept it under the wraps.
However, you missed the 3rd point: min of 600 ft visibility, which they didn't have.
Seconds after touching down, heavy rain came pouring down in New York, one more missed approach and the 370 wouldn't be here today

Lack of maintenance... The b777 is actually one of the most reliable aircrafts
Most likely a electrical or system failure. This airplane is much too complicated to speculate, unless you are looking at test results conducted after the incident. On international flights an [ APU ] is always good to have but may have not been a factor in this type of failure.

Intelligent people stay calm and Pilots are intelligent people.
Great job by the cockpit crew but the important question which was never asked (probably due to restrictions by Air India PR dept) is why were there multiple failures and why were the back-up systems also unavailable e.g. radio altimeter on "both" sides not working, third radio altimeter giving erroneous information, APU not working. Was it due to irregular maintenance or due to lack of funds for critical spares. Was this aircraft in service as a flying coffin?
Ashwin Valecha my thoughts exactly. Who the hell signed off for this-cause I guarantee they’d not have been able to MEL all those things-particularly TCAS.
In my opinion, it sounds like the APU is the problem that caused the issue. No auxiliary power unit, batteries run low, no instruments. But this is just a guess.
And why the pilots decided to press on regardless to NY when there were plenty of alternates they could have diverted to well before the destination, with decent weather and not be running on fumes.
Patrick Burns: APUs don't usually run during flight. There are _big_ generators on the main engines.
This flight is best described as a clusterf**k narrowly avoided being aa tragedy by a bunch of inept pilots who need permanently grounding for knowingly putting 200+ people in harm's way and an airline the FAA/EASA need to ban from their skies.
It doesn't matter how "good" their flying was at the end. It was their unspeakably _poor_ decisions which caused the crisis in the first place - not quite as bad as the safety chief of KLM losing patience and beginning a takeoff roll at Tenerife without making sure he actually did have ATC clearance, but close.
Lack of maintenance by AI... Otherwise we all know that the b777 is one of the most reliable aircrafts
I guess electronics are not as reliable as we seem to think. And computers are great, but you can never do without the human factor, which, in this case saved the plane and 370 people!
