I was hoping you'd talk about Webtoon, Tapas, etc

Should you try to get your manga copywrited before publishing on websites such as webtoon or even your own?

One thing I'll put out there is that there are a LOT of places that still don't get translated versions. All they have is scantalations. I think in this case it's fine because they have no way to legally obtain it. Ofc if they have the opportunity they can go for it but otherwise it is them trying to be a part of it as best as they can. In terms of, of supporting the publishers and Mangaka the problem is that they have it overpriced over here because of how expensive it is to import and then localize it. Not everyone has $15 to send on 4 chapters. Japan has an amazing system working for them where it's like a dollar for the rough version of the manga to stay up to date and then you buy volumes for like 4-6 dollars after they compile. This is amazing for everyone involved. We need something similar to their Magazine service online. I'm sure if they could spend an amount to get subscribed to say Shounen Jump for a year and get all those chapters fresh they'd be willing to if it's affordable and good. Viz itself is a horrible example because they have so much malpractice and issues and just overall have been a flop. Them leading the charge is hurting NA if no one else. I'd say if you can't afford it or have no way to obtain it where you live, scantalations are wonderful for that and you should enjoy it and think to give back somehow later when you can.
There are also a lot of respectful scantalations out there that work with publishers and honestly that's the way it should go. They upload a range of chapters rather than the whole thing so that until it's actually released people can stay caught up and enjoy it with friends. This allows everyone to be happy and the need to still be filled. It also helps break down Language barriers which, they can't localize to every language and country but scantalations tend to works of heart and put effort in place of the large budget and large time that it'd take companies to.
Finally, this allows a universal method for people to communicate and enjoy together. I can enjoy with my friend in Barbados and another in the Philippines at the same time that the Manga comes out elsewhere without having to worry about if they A: had the money, B: had the time, C: had it localized there. Scantalations are 's double edged sword of one of the best and worst things to happen to the industry. However, it's only because this is being looked at in the old way. Once they get on board and start understanding this crowd and their needs it'll be fine. Think Crunchyroll but for Manga. (Even Crunchyroll isn't available everywhere fully and the rights aren't full yet)

    wanna know ur opinion. if:
    1. you want to watch anime in original Japanese language with English subtitles
    2. want to read manga in English
    3. you don't want to have a library at home with mangas
    4. you just want to have it digital
what is the best site to pay for their work?
can you also donate directly to the studio or mangaka?

I'm so happy How to Bam is back! I found your channel about a year ago and was really sad you went on hiatus.
Compared to comics companies here in the west, it seems like the manga industry hasn't really done a good job switching themselves over to offering their products on the web, at least from my perspective here in the US. I can find so much stuff on amazon kindle and comixology off all kinds of comics and graphic novels. Dark horse offers a bunch of stuff digitally, and the company that makes the Archie comics and all the Archie spinoffs, Sonic the Hedgehog, and whatever else they publish, basically everything they offer digitally. But traditional manga companies, not much available digitally.
I'll admit that I read a lot of manga for free from scanlation sites, and I do so because I straight up can't find english translations of the mangas I want anywhere. Sometimes it's stuff that's just out of print like Maison Ikkoku, other times it's stuff they never bothered to translate and offer for sale in the west. If they had translated, digital downloads of the manga I want available for sale, I'd absolutely buy them. I hate reading off those scanlation sites. The ads and pop-ups on those sites can really ruin the reading experience, and I know the artists and publishers aren't seeing a penny for it.

I have a different viewpoint about scanlation sites. Yes, I believe they are wrong for stealing money from the author and illustrators of the industry, however, because of them there is a huge boom of new fans. And not only do they provide fast translations, their translations (in my opinion) tend to be more accurate and less dumbed down. I have read the raw and translated versions of some of the same mangas and they not only took out all of the swearing, changed the puns (instead of explaining the Japanese ones that were funnier), but in some instances blotted out bits of the art! Now I can understand that around nudity, but if the manga is meant for older teens young adults, do you really have to censor out swear words and bloody wounds? I'm sure older teens and up can handle swearing, bloody fight scenes, and occasional nudity. Stop treating us like children and we'll follow you instead.
I wholeheartedly believe in supporting the industry whenever you can and do my best to support it, but I am sick of inaccurate translations, being treated like a child, or having to wait months or years to for the next chapter of volume to be released in my country in a place I can find it. And don't get me started on incorrect pronunciations in official dubbed anime. Stuff like this does not appeal to foreign fans.
    We want to:
•Be able to find your material easily
•Read the same thing people in your country are reading, without unnecessary censorship
•If we don't understand something about your culture or a joke, don't change it, explain it to us. It's new, interesting, and is a learning experience.
•We don't want ads. We'll pay for ad free! Offer a free site with daily limits to increase your fan base, and offer a paid site without ads or limits, we'll come running!
•And for dubs, please just pronounce Japanese word or names right and leave Japanese honorifics in.
I apologize for what seemed like a rant, but this is how I feel. Some official sites you can watch anime with fairly accurate (Still not 100% completely) are Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu. I wholeheartedly support buying the original work whenever you can afford it, especially if you read or watch anywhere online for free. But I do think scanlation sites (despite stealing away money from the industry) do good. Are they right? No. Will they ever be right? No. Piracy is a crime. Have they done some good by increasing the fan base in foreign countries (therefore increasing the amount of foreign fans buying official merchandise), and brought fans together? Yes.

Japan have always thought of themselves first then the world next, and with a mentality like that you can’t expect to grow and make more money. But now we see Japan really taking action against piracy taking illegal sites down and stuff

Great video! I have a question regarding purchasing manga
I wish to support a mangaka so I decided to buy their actual work. However, I have trouble deciding whether I should buy manga translated by VIZ or original, japanese manga directly from Japan. I know the author gets more money from me If I buy the japanese manga, but I won't be able to read them and I don't have the time to learn japanese, at the moment. By buying VIZ translated volumes, I'll still be able to support the author AND be able to read those volumes, but the mangaka will receive less of my money, apparently. So I can't decide on what to do here. Do you have any advice to spare? I really wish to support the mangaka, but the selfish side of me still wants to be able to read the volumes, not sure what to do.
