Rumor has it that the reason the Angry Marines are so angry is because long ago they foresaw the fate of the Lamenters and upon seeing what this universe did to legitimately good and nice people filled them with incalculable rage.

I think the part of this song that gets me the most, no matter how many times I listen, is "From far behind me I see the greatest of sights; the herd we held, slipped away from the onslaught"
The simple knowledge that his men did not die in vain. And not to hold some grand fort, or to spit in the eye of one of the Chaos gods. But to ensure a small cadre of innocent civilians did not have to suffer the same fate he and his men have doomed themselves to by choosing to stay and fight a battle they knew they could not win. That simple transport, bearing an impossibly insignificant number of civilians, is the greatest thing he has ever seen.
_THAT_ is the kind of selflessness and nobility all Astartes should aspire to.

I like to imagine that during this battle, a imperial guard, last of his unit is there, aiding civilians. He is bitter, lost all willingness to fight anymore. He plans to bail, to hide in a fringe world or something far away from prying eyes and dodge having to get stuck in another unit. The lamenters came, as he scuffs at their efforts. But as he saw, they had no intention to retreat. They had no intention to turn the battle. Just to buy time, even as it becomes clear they will not live through this.
And he continues mulling it over. "Its futile" he thinks, "Its a pointless endeavor." But as he watches their numbers drain, as the last of the civilians run in to the ship, he begins to feel something inspire him. It is at the pivotal moment, he spots a mother separated from her child as the stray fire stars to find their location. In that moment, the Lamenters last stand had inspired him, and in that moment he banished all dark thoughts, and ran to save her. Shots fly around him as he gets the child, and running back to the ship, yelling for them to start closing the door and take off as he makes it at the last moment. He watches the Lamenters let out their cry, and in that moment, he realized that their cause was not futile after all. He would report back, undoubtly transferred to a new unit. But this time, he feels like he owed it to the brave space marines who saved not just his but the civilians lives, thinking back to their last cry heard over the intercom.

A massive co-operative mode of a 100 man team against AI enemies. The goal is to protect the evacuation ships long enough for them all the leave. As the bulk of the enemy forces take over the city, more of them find their way to the space port. As the final shuttle is readying to leave, a healthbar appears at the top of the screen: a monstrous horror of xenos technology, foul Warp-wrought machines, or an organic nightmare. The goal is clear: keep THAT away from the shuttle. With respawns de-activated, only your faith and ferocity stand between victory and defeat.

Ah, the Lamenters... Screwed over by their own allies time and time again, fighting the lost battles time and time again, perpetually on the brink of destruction, yet still fighting for the common people of the Imperium against all odds with unyielding determination that possibly exceeds even Imperial Fists. One of the few chapters that geniuenly care for civilian lives and would risk everything to save them despite tactical and strategic issues caused.

During Abaaddon's 9th Black Crusade, the Lamenters were tasked with defending the Hive World of Corilla, along with the Mortifactors chapter (a highly religious chapter, who are descendants of the Ultramarines, incidentally).
Unfortunately, upon learning that they would be sharing a battlefield with the Lamenters (one of the infamous 'Cursed Founding') the Mortifactors promptly abandoned the planet, as they considered the Lamenters to be "Sinners in Waiting", solely due to being from the 21st Founding- as such, the Lamenters had to hold the planet pretty much by themselves (along with a few Guard regiments and the like) for six solar weeks against a significantly sized Chaos Force, being whittled down to about 200 battle-brothers before they were relieved by a force made from both the White Scars and the Ultramarines.

my headcannon of when the Lamenters got their Primaris reinforcements:
One by one the remaining Astartes of the Lamenters are brought to a wall by the custodes, confused as to what is going on as no weapons were raised. The air was filled with tension as the brothers stood side by side, proud sons of Sanguinius waiting to hear if they were to be another chapter just wiped from existence or if there was something greater planned for them. The large golden clad warriors of the custodes nodded to eachother before turning to their ship as the door fell open. Inside lay something that left the air somehow stiller than it had been before. Then out stepped the first of the new sons, the intercessors, the Primaris marines, adorned in the colors of the Lementers whom stood before them at the wall, unease filled them as they knew not whether these new generation marines were here to replace them, or join them. Suddenly as the Primaris filed out and row after row formed lines in front of their experienced, veteran, most honorable brothers. And one by one, each of the surviving Lamenters were of all things...hugged, a tight embrace from the new generation of sons to the older generation. The custodes, seeing their job done departed. Adding them to the list of chapters that accepted their new Primaris marines as the tension below began to ease. The Lamenters were once again at combat strengths not seen in many years... And there were citizens of the imperium in need, The emperor guide their blades.

@@imperialfist2304 that's the point. The reason why BAngels are said to live long is, actually, their deadliness in melee. No opportunity for the ennemy to shoot or even ready itself and overwhelm them, that's how loyalist marines operate in melee, even the Black Templars, because they too use transports and drop pods.
But somehow, the BAngels gey nigh wiped out twice to serve as faire-valoir for the stealers and Tyranids.
The Lamenters ? They get killed easily in popculture and have been almost destroyed in the "lore". How long it takes to recruit a space marine ? Years are needed to make neophytes reach perfection but even so the Chapters can't have more neophytes than they have geneseeds in store. Make no mistake, Chapters that are actually good at attrition Warfare don't exist : they win with minimal or no losses at all or else they failed to apply the Codex Astartes to perfection.
A Penitent Crusade is meant to be long and dangerous. Three factors conclude to its fulfilment : victims (Marines and foes) and time. I don't remember when they started but if they ended with Guilliman sending "reinforcements", then, how convenient ! Fitting, that you struggled with the song so much, much like the Lamenters in the lore.
The strain you put on yourself is evident in the song, and while it sounds jarring, it still works. All the more fitting, even, given the subject matter. A lot of people in the comments seem to agree with the gist of it sounding odd but still working.
However I feel this song has more potential to it.
I hope that one day it might be revisited and reworked.
As it stands now it captures the desperation in the face of dispair that the Lamenters suffer in a beautifully painful manner.
But I wish to see a version capturing the glory that they envision in their hearts as well.
Their ideals, the magnificence buried within the loss and foul luck, purified and brought to the fore.

Emperor: So who are these Lamenters I keep hearing about?
Kitten: Oh the Lamenters? They are a chapter who are descended from the blood angels.
Emperor: From my sweet boy senguiny.
Kitten: Y-yes. They are a bit of a.... well they are not exactly a very loved chapter. Rumors circulated around them have gone so out of hand it’s damaged their reputation among the other chapters. They believe they are cursed because they have had what you would call in your words my lord “extreme shit luck”. They have been decimated time and time again. It’s a miracle they even survived for so long.
Emperor: I don’t want any of that double standard bs from my other children who literally throw their own ships at their enemies just to get that kamikaze kill. *Had turn on eye camera film while banana head was speaking* looking at them right now and they just look like total lemon boys. Though seeing as their names are “Lemon-tors” makes sense.
Kitten: Yeah but here is the thing my lord. Despite the rumors of them being cursed they are one of the most kindest chapters in the imperium second only to the salamanders. They have been known to fly to isolated civilian colonies and fight till their dying breath that every civilian is evacuated from the xeno invaders.
Emperor: so the lemon boys are trying to make up for the rumors with their actions. Unsurprising. But not unappreciated.
Kitten: I agree my lord. There was one battle where they were left alone by another chapter called the “Mortifactors” during the 9th black crusade on corellia. Claiming that they don’t want to be anywhere near these “cursed” individuals.
Emperor: I’m gonna put a pin in that chapter topic for now and just say that sounds like a really fucking edgy chapter. Also. I understand that if the space marines value their life as I do not wish for any of them to die recklessly for me, Except maybe those fucking smurfs. But leaving another chapter of brothers alone to fight a whole crusade by themselves over some fucking bad luck is just fucking despicably cowardly. So what happened to the lemon boys?
Kitten: They fought like it was their last battle, making sure every civilian was safe. It was said that for every marine that died. A family was saved or an orphan, and 10 demons died with the said killed marine. It wasn’t until the white scars and the ultramarines came to save the day turning the tide.
Emperor: Because the only way to win a losing battle is to use cheats like the fucking smurfs do.
Kitten: After the battle only a hundred of the Lamenters were left, their entire chapter was there and they were devastated by the ensuing battle. They were soon to be called the “yellow pawns” as a reference to their check board on their shoulder pads and them of course being colored yellow.
Emperor: I gotta say them some ballsy pawns for fighting off those chaos spawns and heretics.
Kitten: Though after the battle they left the planet, but soon ended up being in a warp drift on their way home and didn’t appear till thousands of years later. Not only did they survive the warp fighting their whole way back tooth and nail. but they still had enough marines to rebuild their chapter to full strength.
Emperor: It’s as if these lemon boys are like the polar opposites of the smurfs. Instead of winning every battle without any casualties these marines nearly lose every battle with high as fuck casualties. Still I can not deny that they do a very good job at what they do and should say I am very proud of them trying so hard to prove them selves. Still I think they should be cut a break now. Because the way they literally sacrifice themselves for the imperium every battle is just fucking depressing. I want you to message their chapter master and tell them to recall all lemon boys. And instead have these Mortifuckers start doing their jobs till the lemon boys have proper time to rest and boost their stats and maybe even have some peace and quiet. See how they like it when being put on “baby protect and/or be killed” duty. And if any of them think of disobeying they will not only be threatened as a traitor of the whole of imperium but there' entire chapter will be excluded. I do not fucking care what they do before. They need to be punished for not only abandoning the people of me, but also being total pussies and leaving their own brothers to defend themselves.
Kitten: eerhmm my lord is that wise?
Emperor: I’m the mother fucking emperor. I have the will and authority. Besides, anyone who bullies my favorite son’s kids needs a royal spanking, and if the parents won’t do it then I fucking will.
Kitten: as you wish my lord.
Emperor: So, what happened after they came back from the warp?
    Kitten: Oh boy. *nervous*

David S. Arch Warhammer actually covered that in his cursed founding series, up until that point their record was actually quite clean. They mostly dealt with alien menaces out on the frontiers of the Ultima Segmentum(I believe?), got reassigned to fight near the eye of terror during a black crusade, took harsh casualties after another chapter refused to fight with them against a greater foe. Eventually they got reassigned to the maelstrom and were tricked to siding with the traitors during the badab war, a conclave of space marines judged them innocent of heresy but condemned them to a 100 year penitence crusade for their actions.
So while the Badab was a major black mark it’s really the only black mark on their record. Honestly what sucks is that their performance would’ve made them a premier chapter an example of what it means to be a Space Marine! But because they were part of the cursed founding their condemned to hatred and mistrust, also that bad luck of theirs just makes their casualties worse.
Their honestly one of the most noble chapters out their but the circumstances of their birth and their cosmic bad luck is driving them towards possible damnation. So yah their the group that makes you feel when your enjoying 40K 😭

      @crikhox 4 роки тому +40

@@jasperzanovich2504 At the outset of the Corinth Crusade, the Ultramarines called for allies to aid them in their holy task of scourging the mighty Ork empires of the Charadon region of the Eastern Fringes of the galaxy. The Lamenters answered the Ultramarines Chapter Master Marneus Calgar's call, mindful of the ancient debt they believed they owed the Ultramarines for their intercession many years before during the disastrous Siege of Corillia. They despatched a task force of 300 Astartes along with the Battle Barge Daughter of Tempests and her Escorts to serve with the Corinth Crusade. The Lamenters prosecuted the Crusade tirelessly, driving back the Greenskin menace in a series of campaigns and separate battles throughout the Corinth Sector. But it was the liberation of the world of Slaughterhouse III that proved the decisive turning point for the Chapter in the campaign. This Ork Mining World had hundreds of thousands of human slaves funnelled into its mines never to return. Moved by their plight, the Lamenters petitioned the Crusade Command for the task of attacking Slaughterhouse III, which Calgar reluctantly agreed to, with the proviso that he could grant no further support to the Lamenters' mission. The Lamenters slipped through the Orks' lines and quickly obliterated their orbital defences, and then swept away any organised Greenskin resistance in a remorseless assault. Seeing their brutal captors cast down, the prisoners rose up and joined the fray and in a few short solar hours the planet was in the Lamenters' hands. But their victory had unforeseen problems; they had liberated 3,000,000 human prisoners who now looked to their saviours to deliver them from the hands of their enemies. Reluctant to leave the prisoners behind and unable to transport them away from the planet, the Lamenters resolved to fight and if need be nobly die while any chance remained, their Techmarines desperately trying to restore the captured Ork starships to operational flight status. The single Battle Barge and less than 200 surviving Lamenters Battle-Brothers stood against the nightmarish odds as waves of Ork starships and Fighta-Bommers attacked, only to be beaten back by the Lamenters' savagery. Unprecedented numbers of the Lamenters succumbed to the Black Rage in the bloody struggle. The freed slaves took it upon themselves to end the impasse; after a last prayer of thanks to the Emperor they signalled the Lamenters' Battle Barge and requested a merciful death, knowing that at least they would die as free men and women rather than as the pawns of the bestial Greenskins. With another Ork fleet massing for the attack, the Lamenters had no choice and granted the former slaves the Emperor's Peace by detonating a series of hundreds of seismic charges that had been honeycombed through Slaughterhouse III's mines and collapsing the tunnels. The explosions laid Slaughterhouse III to waste within solar minutes, creating one of the largest planetary tombs in Imperial history. With fewer than 100 Battle-Brothers left standing, the battered but unbowed Daughter of Tempests escaped the Slaughterhouse System, trailing a handful of converted Ork slave transports, carrying with them less than a tenth of the liberated slaves. In operational terms the liberation of the Ork Mining World had been a resounding success; the destruction of the mines had set back the Orks' build-up of war materiel by years and caused internecine conflicts amongst the various Ork klanz vying for the star system's mineral wealth. The Lamenters' success was only marred by the unfortunate losses incurred in the battle's aftermath. Yet their "victory" tasted like bitter ashes to the Lamenters. When offered the honour of an Iron Halo in reward for their efforts from Marneus Calgar, the Lamenters took the almost unprecedented step of refusing this esteemed Chapter honour. This caused some of their Imperial allies to accuse them of deliberately insulting the Crusade's commander, further breeding suspicion and dark rumour among those already ill-disposed towards the Chapter.

Where the Lamenters begin their defense, the Civilians are so close that we can make out individual features and see the fear and awe in their expressions. The next picture, as hostilities begin, the civilians are running towards the grounded transports, details obscured by distance as the Astartes advance in the opposite direction. Next scene, the Transports are away but the Lamenters are starting to take casualties. Next, no sign of the transports full of Civvies, but more casualties with only a handful of Astartes left. Despite this, we see they are still doing a fighting advance. This leads to the finale where the Battle Brothers make their last glorious charge against the enemy, nothing in the background to distract us, it is all upon the few remaining Lamenters, as it should be.

"Alimentia" comes from "aliment" (nourishment), which only needs the second and third letters swapped to make "ailment" (sickness). A fitting place for a last stand by Astartes of a Chapter that comes from a lineage renowned for its affliction with unusually strong blood-drinking and flesh-eating urges AND is afflicted by a terrible curse of misfortune in exchange for their apparent freedom from the aforementioned urges.
