    Maybe my love of the original show is blinding me, but I feel that Netflix’s Avatar remake sucks absolute platypus bear eggs. It has the same issues as the 2010 movie, just in different ways. It disrespects the original, and falls into the same traps of every other modern Hollywood fiasco. Thanks Netflix, I hate it.

    I feel like the main reason for giving Kyoshi so much attention while reducing Roku's role was the classic Disney Marvel Star Wars "GIRL POWER" thing. There's nothing wrong with making powerful and prominent female characters, but when they're done right, which the original show did with nearly every female character they had. This ain't it, chief. This just feels forced.

    • @taylorwarden205
      @taylorwarden205 28 днів тому +3

      It totally was for that. That’s why they also included that line with Katara about finding a master and her say “you looking at her” totally leaving out her growth as a water bender through the whole season. But there’s a reason for it, it is now an unwritten rule that girl characters can’t have male mentors bc of girl power and all that, which just cheapens the female character all together.

    6:04 god I rolled my eyes when I saw this scene for the first time, the writers’ of this show really wanted to get pegged by kyoshi that they diminished the significance and presence of Roku as a character, he’s that calm demeanor that can switch into being serious when it matters, not this old man who trolls Aang with this corny aah elder joke.

    God, Sokka 'losing is sexism' is such a weird move. The entire point is that he develops, which shows he's willing to change his mind if proven wrong and also puts out an actively anti-sexist message. Not only that, but Sokka's attitude gives us a strong insight into his culture, as well. He wasn't just born an asshole, this is something he learned from his family before they were wiped out, something he internalized as a kid.
    That's good worldbuilding since, without that much time or focus, you're directly implying things that become obvious about the Northern Water Tribe's culture and social norms through Sokka. We're setting little hints up, right? So when we finally get there and Pakku's a sexist scumbag, it makes more sense to us. Because we've seen this before WITH SOKKA. Which also sets up the obvious conclusion that Pakku might ALSO be open to change if he's knocked down a peg and proven wrong about Katara's abilities.
    I mean, this is all good shit, you know?

      @@SaceStationThe writers feel like they don't trust their viewers - constant exposition, characters have their flaws removed (to the point of being bland), etc. Part of what makes fiction fun is seeing characters grow (and sometimes fall/fail), and turning Sokka into this boring guy whose only "flaw" is that he feels a bit inadequate because his dad doesn't trust him (another weird change) but is otherwise just a good guy with not a ton to work on. He was my favorite character in the original and I think the actor's doing the best he can (most of the cast is) but the writing is letting them all down.

    In the original, we meet ty lee doing gymnastics during the whole discussion. Even without dialogues, you d know what she does.
    Same for mai, as soon as we see her she is brooding and say she is bored.
    Here they just stand and do nothing. They really just are there to give a wink to fans, new viewers will have no idea what these two girls are about...

  • @taylorwarden205
    @taylorwarden205 28 днів тому +7

    My grievances are as follows with this show: they rushed the storylines so much that it feels like that Team Avatar doesn’t really know each other or are close to each other and doesn’t let important storylines be fleshed out (ie the blue spirit and the tunnels of the two lovers) . Certain characters being in this season when they shouldn’t be and playing a part that will screw up THEIR ORIGINAL STORYLINE in the seasons coming up bc they are too early. The cheapening of character arc and the robbing of character agency: Zhao was lead by the nose by Azula (SHE was the one who got him the archers, SHE figured out Zuko was the blue spirit, let my man be ambitious and actually smart like he’s suppose to be), Bumi was jaded, bitter, and antagonistic towards Aang. And the true travesty was Aang; through the whole show he was joyless, down trodden, too serious and too fearful. Just hopeless in many aspects without an anchor because of the first reason stated. The only ones I was satisfied with was really Zuko and Iroh. I out of everyone they felt the most like themselves albeit somewhat NERFED in their abilities.

    This is a recurring theme. The current crop of script writers have too much ego to do an adaptation that respects the source material. Instead they're constantly looking for opportunities to insert themselves, rewriting perfectly good material just so it will be _their_ work. Then it turns out worse simply because people with this level of ego don't have the kind of artistic talent it takes to do something really good.
    It's a form of parasitism. They base their work on popular source material to get more attention than they would get if they did their own thing. And then they ruin it out of incompetence. They hang on the coat tails of good work to feed on the goodwill someone else earned, then run the entire IP into the ground. Like Disney did with Star Wars.

    "You found a master, haven't you?"
    "Yes... you're looking at her."
    Dude....... Not only is Aang actually about as good at Waterbending at this point in the show, but Zuko's referring to Paku. And he's right!
    Katara's time will come. But that time is not right now. She only grows into Aang's master for real after leaving the Northern Tribe.

    • @SaceStation
      @SaceStation  Місяць тому +5

      Dude Pakku doesn’t even train Katara in the Netflix version. It’s just like the Mulan remake where she’s already great but just needs to stop holding back and show everyone her greatness. It’s bollocks. They changed the line from the original from “but you still won’t train me” to “but you still won’t let me fight.” She’s already a master somehow…

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher Місяць тому +1

      @@SaceStation Holy crap, that's dumb. She's the last Waterbender of her tribe, of course she shouldn't be good at it at first because her entire arc is about trying to reconnect with her culture and slowly become a great master of the art.

    • @taylorwarden205
      @taylorwarden205 28 днів тому +2

      They also take out her insecurities of not being a quick study of bending as Aang. Aang never even TRIED to waterbend this whole season. In the original I loved how after being under the tutelage of Paku, Paku gives her the greatest compliment saying that she is the only student of his that improved in such a short time, showing that hard work, tenacity and determination are the making of a great bender and that only relying on natural talent is not enough (looking at Aang who embodies this) showing that yes she may have to work harder than Aang for some things, but that doesn't mean she is not going to succeed.
      And its also interesting that they were in the North for weeks (at most) before everything went down, not just a day and a half, God the pacing of this show...

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 28 днів тому +1

      @@taylorwarden205 Something that's always been super neat to me is that there's probably a really fair chance that Katara's early struggles were from her picking up bad Bending habits.
      I mean, think about it, right? She's self taught and she's literally just trying to feel out how to do an entire style of martial arts on her own. Meanwhile, we know from Jong Jong that just breathing wrong can mess with your Bending.
      Put that next to a natural prodigy that mastered Airbending before he was a teenager, and no wonder Katara had such a worse time of it. But I also feel like Katara's biggest strength has always been her ability to think creatively, right?
      She knows what she wants to do and she's got the mindset, she's just lacking the experience to actually do it. But then flash forward 3 seasons, and the way she deals with Azula is genuinely pretty brilliant, taking out one of the most dangerous characters in the show on her own pretty easily.

    The CGI in this show is not bad? what are you talking about. I do agree the writing is pretty bad though, they shouldn't have included as much as they did. The Casting is perfect though. It seems like writers today really don't understand how to show and not tell. Also they absolutely should have had Roku possess Aang instead of Kyoshi. And they should not have combined so many episodes from the original into the Omashu episodes. There's just wayyyyy too much in those episodes.

      I guess “bad” is the wrong way to describe the cgi in this show. I think a better word is “inconsistent.” Sometimes it looks alright, other times it looks laughable. I honestly just have a vendetta against the overuse of CGI nowadays. It’s too heavily relied upon and rushed, and I found it to be hit or miss. For instance, compare the cgi from Ant Man 3 to the original Iron Man. It’s not even close, but we’ve grown accustomed to mediocre CGI as the new norm.

    I didn't like that Aang had no character development, imo, Sokka's character development, completely gone, just eye candy for Suki, (which to me is sexist in a different way, Sokka no longer is a boy who needs to learn and grow, he's a buff dude with muscles and Suki likes the muscles, and they kissed, and storyline works "even better" now, 🤦🏾‍♂️), and Katara, with no anger, no passion, no real emotion, or drive at all to become a PROPER master water bender, Aang didn't bend a drop of water in season 1, season 2 is earth, and 3 is fire...yet we never seen him learn water first, lastly, Zuko didn't say honor once, (which hurt me, lol), Azula and Ozai were...off, she no longer is the manipulative perfectionist,she was so...plain, boring, not scary, at all, and shown to much, and Ozai...should've not gotten that far into the Agnai Kai, he's supposed to walk to Zuko, no emotion, scar him for disobeying a direct order, (without TEARS in his eye's, where's the evil, caniving, warlord that shows Zuko NO mercy and is trying to teach him a lesson for disobeying?), and Zuko as a CHILD should have been at his fathers knees, begging for forgiveness,as he knew what he did was out of line, (again,in my opinion).
    I'm terrified they're gonna butcher Toph, they already ruined the surprise of the library next season, as well as the whole arc with Aang & Katara, and the secret tunnel, my favorite earth bender next to her daughters and Kuvira from Season 4 of LOK, they ruined Bumi too, for me at least, let's hope season 2 is at least watchable, this first season for me gets a 5/10, while all 7 season's of both ATLA & LOK are 10/10, (imo). 💯

    To be fair about the speaking of Roku:
    Aang is later even able to speak with him outside of that windows to, in the cartoon. At last, if he meet the turtle in S3.
    And in the comic "The promise", has he a pendant with the symbol of the 4 nations, that allows him to speak with the avatars to (he cutted the connection to Roku, after he take the fire symbol from that pendant away).
    So, that he speak Kyoshi is something, that could be possible. Or, is simply creative freedom.

      This feels like it misses the point, though. There's a lot of tension around Aang speaking to Roku because we've never seen it before. They're on a hard time limit and Aang doesn't even know if it's possible for him to do the thing or not, so there's a lot of buildup and significance to this moment.
      Afterwards he channels Roku in front of Jong Jong, channels Kyoshi for the Trial, sees people in The Swamp, etc. But seeing Roku for the first time is a big deal, and having him channel other Avatars before him takes away from how special that moment really is.

And they left because they would not let them, bc and there is proof of it in the sense that in previous events when asked about the show they do mention regret in some areas ( i can’t recall , i do remember the video though ) . Basically what I wish for them to do is to kept going with the show and not end it there, because firstly they could improve. And secondly, I just want new atla content no matter what, considering the series finished 12 years ago. Your analogy with TLOU on HBO is kinda wrong. Neil was only a small part of the first game, Amy Hennig and Bruce Straley were at the forefront of the story/script of the first game. They both left before TLOU 2 and Neil was the sole creative director and story lead for the sequel, which as many know, was quite controversial and nowhere near as good as the first game. The HBO adaptation is much more of what Neil wanted for the game than focusing on what Bruce and Amy made for the game.

    I didn't like a lot of the changes made in the HBO version The Last of Us, I think it also suffers from some of the issues of Netflix ATLA wherein its changes mess with the internal logic of the original story. A big one for me is the Sam/Henry arc which was originally about ordinary people surviving against straight forward villains. The TV show tries to give the characters more complex motivations, but that doesn't match the basic outline of the story. If I'm supposed to believe the HBO version of the Hunters are actually "justified in their actions from their perspective" style villains and not "a random group of apocalyptic thieves" then YOU CAN'T STILL DO THE AMUSH SCENE FROM THE GAME. THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.
    Nevertheless, the HBO show is still generally competent when it is doing its own thing and not directly adapting the game. The Bill/Frank episode is the thing everyone loves and that was the most off-script. Say what you will about the HBO TLOU, those writers have competent.
    I can't say that about Netflix ATLA on any level.

      I'm not sure what you're on about, people were constantly making fun of the Indian Fire Nation and pointing out how weird the decision was.
      Here's the big secret, though:
      There are way more white roles than black/asian/indian roles. So it's harder to really get as mad about an American project with minority representation because at least they're giving work to (usually) good underrepresented actors. As weird as Black L was, at least that's one black guy who got a shot at doing a big role who might not have had that exposure otherwise. Sure, he's not great, but what if he killed it and that lead to more jobs he might not have because it's just hard to get big early roles as a black actor?
      It's not like all of these changes are equal. Some of them do just have more real-world positive outcomes than others, you know? So who gives a shit? It's not like any of these minority race swaps are hurting you or something, sometimes it's shit. Other times Lance Reddick as Wesker is the only good part of the show. It just is what it is.

    People always want a live action adaptation to follow the original animation to a T. If that's the case, just rewatch the original. One thing you have to understand is that animation has tons of time to develop characters and story. Live action on the other hand has real life people with real lives. People get older and God forbid a tradegy can take place. I actually just watched the animation for the 1st when Netflix aired the show. I wanted to watch the OG series to compare it to this. In all honesty I liked it. People say the Neflix version seemed rushed, but the animation compared to Japanese anime felt rushed to me. A problem would occur and be solved all in one episode. The changes that they made were not that bad. For instance the whole thing about Sokka not being sexist. Instead of him being sexist, they made him really cocky then he got humbled. Similar to the animation. If you reqlly want to talk about bad live action adaptaion, compare any live action to the Dragonball adaptation and you'll see BAD really is.

Real people can't pull off those quirky looks without looking weird.

      I am certainly not one of those people who think that "Avatar has been ruined". The fact that the original series exists means that it's legacy will remain intact. Funny thing about that though it does beg the question. . . . . why even make a remake at all. If the original series is superior in every way then why create a derivative form of it?
      There are worlds of difference between adaptation and remakes. Kubrick ADAPTED "The Shining" from the novel. Denis Villeneuve ADAPTED Dune in the same way. The difference? They understood the source material and turned them into their vision. They made the core concepts their own.
      The Netflix series is not that. There is no creative vision for what they are trying to do with the source material. It is a cynical nostalgia cash grab; full stop. There isn't any creative spark behind this remake in any way.
      Perhaps the only good thing that will come out of this is at least people are talking about the property again. Even something like the Netflix series can open up opportunities for new stories in the Avatar world (which should have been the focus in the first place).
      Thankfully for future generations the original animated series will persist and no amount of studio meddling will be able to tarnish it's greatness. I mean, if you had to choose one series to introduce a newcomer to this story which would you choose? Isn't that the real question?

    Do they bring up the Avatar cycle in the remake? I watched it once and I'm good on watching it again. We see the statues in Zuko's room at the beginning but the Avatar room was how we found out about the cycle so do they still talk about it? Or do we just have exposition gran gran talk about the elements and the episode one kyoshi voiceover? In the original, I always assumed that the avatar cycle was how we were going to see the Avatars too, but in reverse, with the last Avatar before the current one being the one we see first because the Avatar would have the closest attachment to the one who just died. Air for Aang at the beginning of the show then Fire Earth Water....and Air for Yangchen at the end. In the adaptation, we seem to just jump around to whatever Avatar is a good cameo in the moment. Water Tribe? Water Avatar. Kyoshi Island? Earth Avatar. Air temple? Gotta have that big Air Avatar statue. What about Fire? Ummmmm.......here seems good. 0.o I was actually okay with the adaptation......until after we get to the present day. Then there is so much exposition at one point I hated gran gran being onscreen because all she did was talk and talk and talk...... *facepalms* and she made me hate the idea of exposition for the whole show which is bad because there's a lot of it. While the M. Knight version makes me legit fall asleep within ten minutes (seriously, I had a hard time falling asleep late night but all I had to do was play the movie and I was out for the count), this version makes me just bored enough to check my phone on the time halfway through the season without the benefit of at least being a good knockout pill. The first ten minutes had me hyped because it was different than the original and explored more of the prewar era. Loved it. As soon as they started trying to "fix" anything once we got to present day, however, it lost me. The first hiccup was gran gran, the first true casualty was Katara for me. Her bending the water that high up in the air without any true build up to her being able to besides floating that ball of water good for a few seconds earlier was just a slap in the face for me and gave me Captain Marvel vibes. I disagree that it as easy as you say. The original show was written and scoped with animation as a medium in mind from its inception. Translating this into live action just doesn't work in my opinion and seeing that the score board is now 0-2 I think I am right. Animation and live action are different mediums with their own unique sets of strengths and trade offs when it comes to story telling. Simply translating scenes from the show wouldn't look good in live action. Animation has several advantages over live action when it comes to the type of world Avatar is. 2 specifically that I would point out is It makes physically impossible things look cohesive frame by frame in the overall composition of shots because animation doesn't have to comply with reality to look cohesive. Bending was never going to look good in live action because making physically impossible things happen in live action in a way that it tricks the human brain enough into thinking its real as it happens on screen is really hard and really expensive. This is why the use CG and green screen in this netflix show looks like star wars episode 2 sometimes.
      The second advantage animation has over live action is its ability to make characters more expressive than live action. Live Actors are always going to be less expressive than animated ones. It's not considered "cool" for live actors to over emote or exaggerate facial expressions especially in western cinema. The animated show was able to breathe so much life into its character because of the medium it was created in. Live action did everything it could to suck the color, life and expressiveness of the avatar world and its character.
      There is a third advantage I would like to point out also, the ability to make grotesque or uncomfortable looking things more palatable for the audience to view vs live action. Zuko's scar is a perfect example. Zukos scar was heavily toned down in the netflix version compared to animated one which soften the impact of his most defining physical trait. The reason for this choice is of course to do a 1:1 translation of Zukos scar in live action would one make it too unpalatable for viewers to look at for an entire series.
      I personally dont understand why in the age of anime consumption by the mainstream, and the general success and acclaim of companies like studio ghible, pixar, and dream works, and disney that animation is still looked so down upon. What do people actually think Live action would do to improve upon Avatar in terms of aesthetics, acting, story telling, and writing? Because both attempts failed to improve anything over the original to me. And if its not improving anything what was the point in spending the time money and resources to create this in the first place when in this all digital age the original series is available in perpetuity?

    I'd say the Sonic the Hedgehog movies were better adaptations than The Last of Us.
    The Last of Us was always kind of 'award bait' to me.
    It's got an interesting premise with a real-world parallel turned into a world-ending threat.
    But other than that. It's just another zombie story. It does have some really cool concepts (Joel being selfish in the end and everything with the fungal infection).
    But Dead Space (just the first Dead Space) is a far better zombie story.

    I can’t say anything for TLOU, but I can say that the live action adaptation of One Piece and the Lord of the Rings is the right way to do adaptations. Each member of the cast loved the series, they carried copies of the series around with them, the actors immersed themselves into the characters, the sets were real, the sets were real, cgi was minimal, and the wanted to do the source material justice. The changes were inevitable, but what was cut and kept, the alterations, were all from a respectful mindset.

      Avatar with minimal CGI is probably quite different to other shows. Bending necessitates CGI: The bending form that needs it the least is firebending. Airbending would not be visible and waterbending, forget it. Earthbending is kinda in the middle. The hybrid creatures could maybe be practical effects, but their movement remains an issue.

      There is no way to make everyone happy. I loved it. With they added a few things but i’ll say it again. The actors will age up too fast to make the show exactly like the cartoon. Because it’s a cartoon not an Anime (not that anyone here said that) just a lot of people get that twisted. If they get 3 seasons which is what i believe i’ve seen then they have to change the story to make sense. Now by the end i may be pissed at the direction it went. Katara just being a master (yes silly) but she is a prodigy. Showing her learning woulda been at least half the episode. Just not enough time before the kids age up. So, when i consider this I can’t say it’s mediocrity. I also wish it was almost exactly like the cartoon. But for live action it’s not possible. Just cause of child acting laws alone. I believe it’s 5 hours on set a day for up to 14 years old. What I’m getting at is when i include all these hurdles to making a live action i can’t say it’s mediocre. A lot of people said they went woke when they really turned a relationship that was hinted at in the game into a couple of men turning gay and falling in love. Nothing wrong with that i just didn’t see the point. I would of rather found out more important information. Seemed like they were definitely trying to appeal to an audience but maybe it just made me feel like that. Live adaptations are not easy. Most piss a lot of fans off. But the point isnt to only please the fans. Its also to bring the world to a new audience. These kids are gonna age up and out very fast. So you HAVE To speed up the plot. Otherwise you have to change characters which can be done like in the house of dragons but its horrible to get close to a character and literally change them. To compare the last live action to this one is not a good comparison. There is bad writing and terrible writing like the first live action. This series is vastly popular and since you dislike it so much im assuming you will no longer watch and i won’t come across another one of these videos when season 2 is out. All those female actors are also comedians which are all hilarious in my opinion and have all made amazing and funny movies. But during the Me Too movement and wanting more women in the acting world they decided to go in that direction. And the movie was a total flop. Now woke used to stand for being aware of racial discrimination and prejudice towards any lgbtq i have honestly lost count of how many letters and genders they claim and its not my place to know. Now wokeness has turned into an activist stance. Where if we dont include a woman lead or whatever the headlines are pushing they can not make the movie. Even the academy awards now have this
      The first, Standard A, which has come under fire from conservatives, can be met in one of three ways: 1) Either one lead or significant supporting character is from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group; 2) at least 30% of the acting ensemble is from at least two underrepresented groups (women, the LGBTQ community ... and it goes on. Look it up and read for yourself. THIS is what is wrong with movies. The movie industry IS allowed to discriminate. But not how you think. Let’s say the lead role is for a blonde haired, blue-eyed, white woman, and a certain shape maybe skinny maybe overweight. That is who they are going to look for they are not going to look for somebody from another race or ethnicity because they are looking for a certain type of person. This is allowed and legal, now what they are saying is to even win an Academy award. You have to follow these guidelines, which being a musician myself it takes away creativity and free speech so yes what wokeness has turned into, unfortunately, is destroying a lot of movies, which would probably be great if they weren’t forced to follow these guidelines. So yes, I do understand what woke means. Originally it was a good thing, but it has been weaponized and used to create a lot of horrible things. The movie industry is a prime example of what happens when you do this. The movies fail because they are horrible. And what do you expect when you worry about hurting peoples feelings. If you don’t like it Don’t watch it. Im not saying you more to everyone complaining about underrepresentation in movies. These are facts.
