    So much of the show could be fixed by just removing 85% of the exposition and using subtle visual cues instead. The very first scene, an earthbender said that the message is already on its way to the earth kingdom. Firelord says "good" The earthbender doesnt get it so the firelord starts explaining his whole invasion plan. Then earthbender summarizes what the firelord said just in case we didnt understand.
    You know how you could fix that scene?
    "The message is already on its way"
    "Good"
    Shot of the firelord smiling
    Shot of earthbender slowly looking up, his eyes widen in realization and a look of horror spreads across his face. End scene. Easy.

      It’s the curse of knowledge. You either accept that a majority of audiences are really so dumb as to need it laid out bare bones like that, or accept that bad writing is really being funded on this level bc they can’t tell what’s good//bad writing by now.

    • @ATLA99
      @ATLA99 2 місяці тому +13

      @@CaulkMongler its the latter, in my opinion. I dont think the average viewer has such poor comprehension skills that they cant understand anything thats not conveyed verbally. Rather, theyre desensitized to this genre of exposition heavy storytelling. This show is a particularly egregious example which is why people are noticing more than usual. Optimistically, i like to believe that this is a trend that will die out in favor of more subtle storytelling, but i guess we'll have to wait and see

      @@ATLA99I think it’ll get worse before it gets better. The original taught me a lot because I was 15 at the time and media illiterate. I would have liked this version more back then because I didn’t have the tools to perceive things like layered metaphors or nuance. I didn’t like Sokka cuz he was sexist, but now, he’s one of my all time favourite characters because of how he overcame it. He’s such a playboy but goofy and brave, when he finally comes out of his cocoon and openly praises Toph since she’s way more powerful than the Boulder, it’s incredible. I was so proud of him and still am for giving boys a proper storyline to follow and grow with. What can people gleam from this adaptation though? That’s so frustrating. His romance with Suki is one of the most natural ever written to me, and they did THAT? She just silently stares at him and actively makes him uncomfortable? It can’t be a consensual scene where he invites her to go swim or something? I’m stunned, I didn’t think it would be this bad but it’s a lot worse than I ever imagined lol. I can’t help but feel that book 2 will somehow be worse and they won’t listen to any of the valid criticism

    I forgot how the comet looked entering. I think the entire reason it gave fire benders a boost in bending is because the comets tail literally stretches out across the sky, and the tail is supposed to be burning gas.... so in perspective to real life, it should almost seem as if the sky is on fire, if not just wavy with orange streaks.. it made sense that THAT would be why the comet boosts firebending..... not just because its a comet.... i literally didnt even take the cartoon version of the comet into perspective...... gonna be honest, i thought it was just my phone

    You couldn’t have said it better. I was a kid when the show came out and so of course it’s child like atmosphere made me love it! But after rewatching it as an adult, even with its childlike atmosphere it still has so many adult themes that make it great even for an older audience. The live action show was written horribly and completely removes aspects that made it great in the first place. No Aang and Katara romance and why does Suki go for a real kiss in the kyoshi episode? It completely makes the romance between Sokka and Yue feel like a secondary romance. And don’t get me started on Bumi! They made it feel rushed and broken. That’s my TED talk. Much love everyone!

    Finally finished it last night. Took me a while, cause it's so poorly done.
    It's just constant rushing through things. If they stopped and thought about it, and slowed down, they couldve made something amazing. CGI is iffy. Best parts are when they slow down and show characters being natural, like Sokka and Yue. The rest of it is just rushing through the story.
    Seriously, imagine if we had 15-20 episodes. It can be done! But they're greedy and want instant gratification.
    Im also not a big fan of putting season 2 episodes into season 1. It's a waste of time, which is precious considering that's why they have to rush things. But.. Nooooo! We *HAVE* to get a secret tunnel homage now!

    • @interdimensionalcat
      @interdimensionalcat  2 місяці тому +7

      Yep, just a bunch of fanservice. What blows me away is that the runtime is so similar to the cartoon, and yet they just use it to exposit, which makes them have to rush everything like you said.

      @bradywalker5291 2 місяці тому +5

      @@interdimensionalcat the runtime blew my mind. Eight 1hr episodes versus twenty 24min episodes.
      They could've literally gone episode by episode, and that would've been amazing. You don't rewrite Shakespeare every time you do Romeo and juliet on stage. Minor changes, sure, but the story is damn near the same every time.

    Sore for double comment but that argument in episode one was really great, I find how Sokka has a quick turn from sexism to concern when the ice starts breaking, and how he’s actually there with Katara for a moment being proud of her water bending accomplishment, then noting how there’s something there to investigate and or run away from, it shows his character fully despite mostly being there to show he’s a sexist kid who needs to learn more, who need to have more experience, it also shows he has good leading qualities, he actually praises katara for good bending, he shows concern until it proves to him that Aang is just a lot kid who’s willing to offer him a ride, and not just that , karata has a good moment there of showing how she can get so mad she won’t see always, which is a rare part of her Character, it’s wonderful to show the worst and best of both of them in one scene in the first episode

      "I don't see like you do, I see with earthbending... even those ants over there."
      Azula: "Why don't you worry less about the tides, who've already made up their mind about killing you. And worry more about me, who's still mulling it over."

There was no reason everybody on the crew needed to be Asian. They didn’t even get the calligraphy correct in Zuko’s notebook so they weren’t even sufficiently attentive to the Asian influences.

    I think one of the biggest changes they changed that really fucked up Aangs character was in the netflix show he DID NOT run away like in the cartoon and the fire nation attacked THE SAME day roughly the same time. Because Aang ran away it created this inner turmoil of him blaming himself for abandoning his duties as the avatar then he finds out after waking up that he DID infact let the world down. Being frozen was an accident sure but running away caused it to happen, but because Aang went on a joy ride and casually flew into a storm rather then leaving DURING a storm because he was emotionally stressed it makes all the times they yell at Aang for abandoning his duties seem worthless. They blame him in both the show and cartoon but in the show it makes no sense because if Aang DIDN'T run away err I mean joy ride away then he would of died with the rest of the airbenders. The events in the cartoon was Aang was told he was the avatar at 12 because they couldn't wait till he was 16 because they sensed or got word or something that war was coming (Honestly forgot) and then proceeded to start his avatar training at the air temple before sending him off to go learn the other elements like previous avatars did. But the issue was he didn't want to and they kept forcing him and he left and then after a undisclosed about of time the fire nation attacked. The point of this is that IF Aang didn't run he could very well have saved his people, Aang ends up learning and mastering all 4 elements and the avatar state in less then a year, about 9-10 months someone else mentioned but I'm not 100% sure myself how long it was in the cartoon. So if Aang didn't run away and the fire nation took more then a year to attack then Aang would have been enough of a master to have stopped the war before it began. We know Fire lord Sozin had to wait at least 12 years because Aang was able to grow before the war started, Aang even made friends in the fire nation before being frozen and he found out the fire nation caused the war AFTER he woke up so either no one told him the fire nation was going to attack OR no one knew what dark times were gonna to happen when they told Aang he was the avatar.
    SO to simplify things, Aang blames himself for running away and getting frozen Aang very well could of saved his people if he stayed but that is just a question, the question is COULD he have saved his people? No one really knows and that is why it eats away at him so badly, he is unsure if what happened was good or bad. The fact to not know if you should blame yourself or not is a big part of what made Aangs story so impactful, as a viewer it was left up to you, do you blame Aang for running or not? We don't know if running away was the correct option or not. Aang was filled with a question he wouldn't get an answer for, if it was good or bad that he left, it was also mixed with the whole ordeal of Aang having survivors guilt the entire time, something he seems to never get over, just bury. In Netflixes adaptation there was no question what happened was a good thing, as a viewer you don't get to ask yourself this question because if Aang had stayed he clearly would of died but in the cartoon is an open debate weather or not Aang running away saved his life or if it killed his people. The constant thing we see Aang deal with in book water was a mixed bag of emotions, "Should I have stayed and did what they asked? Did leaving save my life? Why did I survive and no one else? Did I really let the world down?" These questions would go on to be unanswered because frankly, we just don't know how much time between Aangs disappearance and the fire nation attacking there was, if it had been a year just a single year, Aang would have saved his people.
    HOWEVER IN THE ADAPTATION THEY SHORTCUTTED THE FUCK OUT OF IT leaving NO QUESTION UNANSWERED LIKE WE ARE STUPID. God companies like this just take the safe route and never try anything anymore, they don't wanna take a gamble on trying to make something good and hoping it does well but rather take what is already done and just reuse it over and over again. Except with the avatar they didn't HAVE to try anything new, and could of just copied pager per page of the last airbender and did fine or at least tried to come close rather then just changing everything. Like the southern water tribe, why is it a fucking town now? In the cartoon it showed they were a small camp with a few tents and like 10-15 people, you may wonder why are they so small? Well soon you find out how they were raided over and over again and they kept loosing people only to also find out over half the tribe also left to go to war. They were once a proper town/city before constant attacks widdled them down to barely anything. In the Netflix version we don't get that, they are just a bustling town with like 100 people, their fine. I wish they didn't gut all the deep parts of avatar like they did, it could've been a much better adaptation.... Also I hate zuko in the adaptation but everyone likes him, zuko isn't nearly angry enough and zuko makes faces and shows emotions he never did in the cartoon till book 2. Book 1 he was a last minute addition to the story because they needed a proper villian for the story and they thought it didn't make sense for the firelord to be running around the world looking for the avatar so they added zuko in his place but people fell in love with Zuko. Zuko is my favorite character and they ruined the shit out of him, Zuko shows WAAAAY to much emotion here then he did in book 1 because he was just supposed to be book 1's main bad guy and after book 1 a new bad guy was to show up but they changed Zuko and gave him much more character later on. In the adaptation Zuko is portrayed as a deep and emotional character, in the cartoon he's just an angry bad guy hell bent on capturing the avatar, as Zuko said "I'm never happy" which was the writers poking fun at his character for how he was supposed to be.

      Yea I just really love the cartoon but dislike the adaptation, I only made it halfway through ep 3 before I cringed so hard I had to stop, I was forcing myself to watch it but after what I saw happening in episode 3 I just couldn't. The extremely sad part is, they merged and they cut a lot of stories that allowed for character building and friendship bonding because "they only had 8 episodes" but like it had roughly the same running time as the first season of the cartoon so they really weren't forced to rush anything but they still managed to do that somehow. If cut out all the intros and outros of each episode of avatar one could basically say each episode was about 20 mins, in the adaptation if you did that same each episode would be like 45-48 mins I believe and considering each adaptation only has one intro and outro you get a lot more show time, also they could easily have sped up the credits for each episode since no one gives a shit about those which would allow for more show time but they did that to pad the episode, like 6 mins of outro each fucking episode lol. But at 48 mins per episode you would have 384 mins and the cartoon would have 400 mins, if you squeezed 2 more mins per episode by cutting down the credits you'd have an equal 400 mins for each. So if anyone tells you "Well they had to rush it because they were only allowed 8 episodes" is totally bullshitting you, I've heard someone say that before, but they still managed to make everything feel rushed because they had to sit down and explain everything then show some stuff instead of just showing. I never made it to king bumi for the adaptation but I've seen other reviews aswell and you are gonna hate him, One thing no one else mentions tho is that bumi looks like a crackhead outside of a 7/11 cosplaying barbosa from pirates of the Caribbean, but other then that if you don't know what they did to change bumi yet then oh boy, you will. I will say, the only likeness he has is the name and he's an earthbender....

      @@salvatoreruggiero6551 The difference between a town and village is based off population density not building size. In todays age it takes about 1k people but way back when the population requirement was much lower aswell as a few other factors. They had building, a wall, more then 1 gate, even a town hall which is were they brought Aang. In the cartoon they literally had tents in a circle and everyone who lived in the camp could fit on screen and half of them were kids. They watered down the whole sense they built up when katara revealed what happened to her mother and how that water bender developed blood bending. It was because of the constant raids over and over again over the years and half the vlllage leaving for war, it SHOWED the brutality of the war and the effect it had, but in the netflix show they TOLD you how bad it was. Just imagine how incredible it would've been if Netflix's huge budget was used to re-animate a 2004 cartoon with 2024 technology (like Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai levels! -or even build up on Korra's) and it would be much easier to perfect it even more. But no, it had to be live freaking action...

It works for the medium but you clearly haven’t read the trilogy yourself if you claim that it’s a faithful adaptation, and are just taking Peter Jackson’s word for it.
