  • If you live in the Los Angeles or Orange County area, you probably grew up with K-Earth 101. In my case, I listened to them every day. However, they're very different nowadays. But luckily, when I was a kid I often recorded them on every blank cassette tape my parents ever bought me! So, here is a montage of jingles and sweepers from K-Earth 101.1, call-letters KRTH, from 2001 and 2002. For the rest of you who live in other parts of the country, perhaps you can recall a station in your hometown that sounded like this... Enjoy!
Here are the songs played after these jingles and sweepers. At least three of them are Christmas songs.
#1. Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Bad Moon Rising (1969).
    #2. Vanity Fare - Hitchin' A Ride (1970)
#3. Elvis Presley - Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me (1957).
#4. Chubby Checker & Bobby Rydell - Jingle Bell Rock (1963).
    #5. The Chiffons - He's So Fine (1963).
    #6. The Drifters - On Broadway (1963).
    #7. Santana - Oye Como Va (1970).
    #8. Dion & the Belmonts - A Teenager In Love (1959).
#9. Elvis Presley - Return to Sender (1962).
    #10. The Crystals - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964).
#11. The Temptations - Ain't Too Proud to Beg (1966).
    #12. Chuck Berry - Maybellene (1955).
    #13. B.J. Thomas - Hooked On a Feeling (1969).
#14. Smokey Robinson & the Miracles - Oooh Baby Baby (1965).

I was Jim Carson's morning show producer for several years during this era. It was a great place to work at, and with only a few exceptions, the people were great.. Like one big dysfunctional family :)

I lived in Glendale (LA) these years!!!!! When it was so exciting. I miss this so much. It got me into all of the 50's, 60's and 70's that I missed out on as a child and love even more today. I heard the format's changed. Just like the city :(

Aww K RTH 101, how I miss you. Some of my favorite memories involved listening to k earth a lot. My appreciation for the golden oldies started when I volunteered at age 11 at an adult senior daycare center where my mom worked. I don't care if I'm an old soul at heart, but I appreciate the sounds and simplicity of yesteryear.

Glad you enjoyed this! When I was that young, I often recorded this station, because honestly, though I didn't know when it'd happen, I knew one day, they'd change their sound. But hey, not to worry. Have you heard? We actually have an oldies station now, which is on AM 1260, known as LA Oldies. The call letters are KSUR. It may not be the same as the live personalities of K-Earth, but the great thing is, though, they've got a larger playlist. So, if you happen to be in front of a radio, remember, the frequency is AM 1260, call letters KSUR.

By the way, in case you were wondering who was doing the talking in-between the songs, that guy with a deep voice, his name's Charlie Van Dyke. There was another Charlie who worked at K-Earth from time to time, Charlie Tuna. Unfortunately, we lost him a year or two ago. He passed away. But if I'm not mistaken, Mr. Van Dyke is probably taking it easy, or working for some other station, who knows.

Matthew Saracho wow thanks for the nice reply, Matthew! I'll definitely keep AM 1260 in mind and put it as one of my presets :D

This is great hearing these again. Especially considering how much the station's sound has changed which, unfortunately, has meant the disappearance of the famous K-Earth 101 jingle.

Thanks CoastersBolts. When many of these were first recorded on cassette tape I was just at least 12 or 13 years-old... I was not your average kid who played Exbox or Play Station... Instead, if I had a boombox someone bought me for my birthday or Christmas, chances are I'd be in my room, preparing a blank tape and putting it on rewind. And once I rewound it to the beginning, I'd go to the radio presets and tune it to K-Earth 101, press record, turn the volume to its lowest, and bam! I'd record a full side, and eventually a full tape of this station. I didn't know when it would happen, but I recorded this station whenever I could because I knew that one day, they'd "change their tune", so to speak. And lo and behold, they did. Here to keep the old flame alive once more!

Man those were the good old days when K-Earth was the home of the oldies from 50's 60's and 70's. Now its just classic rock on K-Earth 101 focusing 80's and 90's and some songs from the 70's. If you want to listen to oldies again you can go to K-Surf 1260 am. Everything has change.

Thanks for the advice, I knew that LOL. Also, if you have a computer or use the Tunein app, there actually is an oldies station on FM, based in Lancaster. Their call letters are KFXM, frequency 98.3. You can't get it here in LA or Orange County, but they are available on Tunein. I lived in Lancaster for a few years, so I'm pretty familiar. You can also listen on their website, kfxm.com. They've got a much larger playlist, and listeners as well as local businesses support 'em financially.

Matthew Saracho the jingles, from the KFXM of my current hometown, Riverside/San Bernardino/Inland Empire. Man, in quarantine my man, good time for you to do some more montages.

As some of you probably noticed in the hourly intro at 0:57, Mr. Gary Brian, K-Earth's morning man was off duty. I recorded this aircheck on Thanksgiving morning, 15 years ago. That's why you didn't hear Mr. Brian talking during the first half of Jingle Bell Rock LOL. A DJ by the name of Dave Randall was Gary's substitute that morning.

Not a problem Nancy. I still have quite a few cassette tapes lying around in a big box, so over the past several months I've been recording them digitally. Believe me, I wasn't your average kid who liked to play Play Station or Xbox. Instead, whenever I was home, I'd simply prepare a blank cassette and record K-Earth 101 on both sides. I wish I would have recorded this station in 1998 or 99, but the only trouble was, like you I was still a kid and people would've worried that I might tear up the tape LOL. So I waited until I was 12 or 13 to do this. Back then I didn't know when it would happen, but I did this knowing one day, their format would change. Nowadays, when I want to record these tapes into digital format, this is what I do. I just plug in an auxiliary extention to a portable boombox, and put the other half of the cord in my computer. Once the tape is rewound, I just prepare the computer to record it. But anyway, glad you enjoyed this upload! (:

Well Nancy, have you checked out this new video I uploaded? It's a collection of jingles used for KOST 103.5 around the holiday season. If you heard them around Christmas time, then they'll ring a bell. These were played from 2000 to 2007 I'd assume. Nowadays KOST relies on another company. They're a company based out of Europe called Reel World. But back when you and I were kids, KOST had pretty amazing jingles recorded by a company out of Dallas Texas called JAM Creative Productions, Inc. See link below, and let the holiday memories begin!

Matthew Saracho matt, back then, you should’ve did like me when traveling. Get you a nice little recorder with a radio built in, and a nice bunch of cassette tapes, and record away. They really had some good stuff back then. Your options weren’t limmited. For example, those same jingles you would’ve heard on KRTH’s sister in Dallas, TX, KLUV. Down in the southern areas, and more towards the east coast, those were the best areas. Especially, if you had been in parts of Ohio, you could get parts of Ontario Canada on a good day.

K Earth was once special but the new PD Chris Ebbott took the special out of it. he did all but give the station a new name. and the new voice for the sweepers and promos last I heard was Joe Capriona. The new K Earth is alright I guess but Old K Earth was way better. old K Earth is missed her days came to a end 2014-2015 RIP girl! Thanks for all of the great memories from 1999 when I was young to around 2014 I would still tune in sometimes even though I moved out of California in 2006.

This was a great radio station, too bad they have desolved into a cumbersome 80's/90's station with no energy or excitement today.
