    I love that the roof opens ! Two years ago I was going to add to a friend’s Gnome area. I had used some store-bought cheap doorways and made windows from both kindling and wood pieces I gathered from her woods. I planned everything for the outdoors as she works with developmentally disabled children with her horses and they would be playing with it. She already had some Gnomes in various sizes so I added details to them, like one cent coins painted gold and glued to be piling around their feet, bridges, splitting sticks for stairs around the existing real tree. I planned for outdoors with plastic bases from various sizes of bottles and gorilla glue and others and river rock. I bought spray outdoor sealants. Just plan a little for your final site and it works. I am so excited about the foil !!! “Who woulda thunk?” I will research different kinds of fillers meant for outdoors instead of masking tape & paper towels, though. Thank you, so very much.

      using corrugated plastic, foam (the pink/purple stuff at home depot or lowes, the white foam board sold at dollar stores, or "great stuff pond foam") and spray paint would handle the outside a bit better if you're still looking for materials to build things outdoors. I've personally made a fallen log house out of foam,a plastic bottle,hot glue, discarded hand wipes, air dry clay and modelling paste. it's got 3 layers of marine varnish it's weathered a small frost and multiple rainstorms, it's still kicking.

    So cute. I went on a dollar store shopping spree today with list in hand to begin creating this week. Watching this gave me an idea to make a bee skep house. Can't thank you enough for the effort and time you give to share so much inspiration. It is greatly appreciated. And for not having carpentry skills, you do very well. Thanks so much.

    Hi Sharon! I've been obsessed with your Chanel ever since I came across it about a week ago. I'm I glad I found you! Love, Love, Love your work.
    If you have a moment could you please tell me if mod podge would be a good sealant and does it have to be satin finish. Also do you think chalk paint would work. And for tacky glue would other glue such as carpenter glue work? I'd like to try and make 4 of these mushroom houses and put a battery operated tea candle in them for night lights for Christmas for my grand children. I live in the country and have limited access to the different types of material you are using. Thank you for sharing this Amazing work with me.

    • @plumtucker9514
      @plumtucker9514 3 роки тому +2

      you'd need a sealant, like marine varnish or 4-5 coats of clear spray paint. The PVA glue is water-soluble, and the towels and masking tape and paint would biodegrade without a waterproof sealant.

    Wow! Sharon! I knew you last year for your crochet videos, and didn't have an inkling that you made these mushroom houses also (altho, technically, they're toadstools... lol). I was stunned and delighted to stumble across this video. Excellent artistry, and as usual you are as precise in this form of artwork and tuition as you are with your crochet projects. Do you have any videos of your past clay houses? Will they be on your YT channel; I don't have a facebook account, and don't plan to get one, but I would love to see some of your clay houses. I'm definitely gonna watch your Gnome house tour! Thank you for this most happy surprise, and for sharing it. :)

      thanks very much! I don't have any videos on my clay one. It's done the same way, foil, tape, (I add a layer of paper towel over that but it's not a must, I just like the surface it gives me for clay) then a thin layer of clay over that. I spread it out with my hands. You can wet you hands for a smoother finish. I use a homemade clay, the recipe is on my channel but you can use any clay recipe, there's many out there. I'm on instagram, I'm trying to upload more to my blog as well. When I post to my blog I will announce it on instagram instagram.com/ojala_crafts/

      @@WhereTheGnomesLive I took your 'Gnome House Tour; it's amazing! Simply extraordinary and superb! So intricate in details, right down to the little chests and plates in the plate rack. You are just the same with your crochet art; very neat and detailed. I made many of your projects and animals. I used to sign in with my full name Lauren Piantino back then. Yes, I make my own clay too; I just make the fairy houses as a sideline, I'm a portrait artist first and foremost, but when I get the time I like to relax and do some craftwork etc; I find making the small houses out of plastic bottles, glass jars etc very therapeutic. But your Gnome House takes the biscuit. lol. You must be so proud of it; as indeed you should be. You are simply one very talented lady! :)

    Thank you so much for sharing! I'm so inspired, such great ideas. Very creative, I love it! One question - does it matter how much water I add to the glue? Is there an exact measurement? Thank you!

    • @WhereTheGnomesLive
      @WhereTheGnomesLive  8 років тому

      +Rocket Girl no, it doesn't matter. Just mix in enough to make the glue workable. It's so thick on its own it would be hard to work with, so mix in enough that it still feels like glue but runny enough to pull off the paper towel. Does that make sense? I can mix some up on video for you and post it if need be. I don't mind...

      the paper clay I use can be air dried, it takes a few days. I use fans to dry big pieces that can't fit in the oven. Smaller pieces I dry in the over on low heat around 175 degrees. Time depends on the size of the piece. I just check it every half hour and see if it needs more time

      I have no idea either. I use a paper clay, but I'm not an expert with it and I don't have experience with other clay. Sorry!

    I have a question I know we can make this mushroom any size ,but what approx is the size you have made just so I get an idea, I have made the first circle on the base of the mushroom its 9inches round, x 4 half inches high seems just a little too big so not too sure..... Thank you Sharon

      +Ammiel7 I'm not sure how long my first piece was. The whole project is about 23 inches around the base, minus the chimney and front entrance.

    How do you think your homes would fair outside? I understand hot glue would be a no-no... what would you use in lieu of that? Do you think if I use a different glue and then just seal the home(s) really well they would stay in tact?

      hot glue isn't the best for items placed in direct sunlight but once you have the outer layers on with the paper mache then it will hold. You would have to seal it all with an exterior sealer though.

    New subscriber. Absolutely love your work with yarn and gnome homes! One question, would newspaper work as well for paper mache or is there a specific reason for using paper towels. Asking bc I can get free 'end rolls' from newspaper office with tons of paper left on them! TIA.
