Paper on bottom my friend. Its purpose is to prevent coffee particulate buildup in the microscopically jagged holes of the portafilter as well as promote puck release in the knockbox. Mesh puck screen on top to prevent contact with grouphead
I’m sure it tasted great and I’m fairly new at this but wouldn’t it be better to put the funnel before using the grinder to avoid that mess. Also, maybe the wdt wasn’t ideal since I think I saw channeling there…
Keeps the shower screen of the espresso machine cleaner. Usually you'd use a puck screen out of metal mesh but they are a pain to clean between uses. You don't get this problem with a paper filter because you just throw it along with the puck after the shot.

I use a metal mesh on top. Paper is pretty useless except for keeping the shower clean. Then again maybe that’s your goal here.

What's the point of putting a paper filter on the top of the puck? To do any filtering surely it needs to be at the bottom of the basket?
