I don't think any human being can keep up or consistent on work with busyness, working alone and to make sure everything cleaned up. I'm not saying cleaning is hard but to maintain it cleaned, it's nearly impossible. Imagine ourselves work in busy cafeteria, non-stop orders and working all alone day and night.
As someone who has worked at like four costa coffees, the idea that you would have time to WEIGH coffee for every shot is absolutely insane to me.

@@bryanroberts7703you have to take in that he is on his own, which is difficult in the first place, and he had to do multiple orders at a time at one point in the video- which is very difficult alone as being efficient with your time is very key in those moments- taking too long will upset customers. i think youre underestimating the situation

@@Skyblue-bq6ev definitely not bro. in PL for example, some people would go out of their way to ruin his mood just because he looks "too relaxed", literally. i didn't work in starbucks particularly, but it did happen to me a lot as a cashier - someone would literally say something along the lines of "why are you so relaxed? don't you see how many people are in the line???!". maybe in starbucks customers are generally nicer. they came to just have a coffee after all:D

Efficiency? Spent so much time taring the portafilter from the scale for each order. Instead of using the Tare function of the scale she could “zero” the scale with the portafilter on it once. Then and the grinds. It’s not like we are in an organic chem class here and need to be accurate down to the microgram. There was a ton of time wasted so it really is not efficient. But she does work hard and is consistent. Managers really need to get their heads out of … you know.
@@exodeus7959 The portafilters don't weight the same, design flaw of the machine that was amended for the version with in built scales. A dosing cup or two would fix the workflow issue though.

You are an absolute rockstar. Not only are you great at working solo, but while you’re working on someone’s order, your chatting with the next customer and aren’t slowing down or getting confused at what you’re currently working on. Not to mention you’re so kind and friendly
Man this brought me back. I didn't have a lot of love for hospitality when I worked it, but now I'm away I have some aspects of it I look back fondly on. A bit of kindness from customers never failed to boost my energy on a stressful day.
As a fairly new barista, seeing you weigh your coffee and steam milk without a thermometer genuinely made me jealous. Smashed it though!
It's nice that you have thermometer. I've been learning how to make coffee for 4 days, and during this time I burned my hand twice😭. On the other hand, thanks to this, I have already learned how to make milk elastic

Being a software engineer myself, I often get that urge to do something physical with my hands. Watching you mastering your craft really is a kind of meditative experience for me. I love it !

I have been a regular at the location I go to and they had me start from the beginning. Not sure if there is a rule for some places on doing that though.
That was great customer service there.
My regular place would give you a free drink at the end of each card, but I went so frequently (daily) that they started asking if that's the "normal size I get" and then they changed it from a free drink to a discounted drink. Lol

I worked at Costa Coffee for a few months, and it didn't suit me at all. I felt incredibly overwhelmed and stressed. Watching this makes me really anxious because I feel like I would be absolutely panicking in that situation. But after 10 mins or so of watching you, it is really calming and almost empowering... I feel like I've been on a spiritual journey watching you work haha

Hi can you help me decide on an espresso machine please??? You seem to know your stuff! I want to buy one for my daughter who used to work at Starbucks and she loves her coffee. Would you be okay with doing everything manually like weighing your coffee and using a thermometer. Or would you want a machine that helps a bit by giving you a perfect dose of coffee. Also helps with by steaming the milk for you if you want and has a built in thermometer. Basically I’m choosing between Breville Barista Express, Breville Barista Touch Express, and Breville Barista Touch IMPRESS. If Baristas prefer manual stuff might as well go with the lower price.

love this! little tip, if you pour your milk or put the espresso in water right away once it’s done pulling, it’ll have a creamy, sweeter taste and texture. it preserves the integrity of the espresso ♥️

WOAH what are the chances I'd stumble onto this comment. I have dyspraxia too and I'm an absolute ditz doing anything hands-on for the most part but I'm a barista myself. I'll say it was a hell of a learning journey, doing latte art and the like is still a struggle sometimes but I absolutely love the job. Not even a massive coffee drinker but I found the step-by-step nature and repetition of making coffee made learning and getting better at it really easy and eventually my co-ordination caught up. Maybe give it a try someday, won't know until you do if it might be for you!
And piling on to the love for the creator I'm absolutely floored at how effortless you make every aspect of this job look while under stress and making damn good coffee while you do it, props to ya mate.

Brother, I worked 9 and a half months at a Stewart's, I know the pain of solo working during a lunch rush. You kept your calm and just got through it, quick, clean and precise and you were damn polite to people as well. Cheers dude, I'd buy you your own Coffee to enjoy after the rush was over if I'd been there
This video brings back memories. Some good, some not so good. I worked many a solo shift at the local bakery, and while I loved the customers and found the rhythm and flow of the busy rushes quite fun, it was definitely better when I had one of two more staff on shift. It was really, really unfortunate the few times I had to turn a customer away if they asked me to do something for them that'd take me away from the front of the shop for more than 5 minutes. An example I'll never forget was on Mother's Day. We had a steady rush of customers picking up cakes, buying cookies, breads, pastries... all very normal stuff. But then a young lady came in and wanted to buy 8 sandwiches. It was so awkward, but there was a line of 4 or 5 people behind her, and I knew her order would put me in the back for 15 minutes of more, so I had no choice but to turn her away.
Normally, I'd have at least one other person on shift with me, or the manager/owner at least, but it was a Sundway during wedding season, and the owner often delivered cakes. My coworker who'd work with me on Sundays would have usually been able to help me, but I think he had either been pulled along to help with the wedding cake delivery, or he may have been pulled away to help out at the farmer's market (where we also sort breakfast pastries and bread every Sunday). Normally, situations like turning a customer away rarely happen, but regrettably, it DOES happen. I had to make a snap judgement decision that likely didn't reflect well on the business overall (and the customer was DEFINITELY not happy), but what could I do? If my boss or literally anyone else was there, the situation would have been different. Unfortunately, I had to choose the lesser of two evils.
Working solo can be tough, I've had some real challenges at the cafe with entire offices needing 30+ coffees on the spot or rushes catching you off guard. I think it's just important to communicate with the people waiting and let them make their own decision.
I hope looking back you can remember the times where it was fun! Sounds like the harder parts of the job were purely management issues and you did your best.

@@ConnorDoesCoffee Yes, you're very right. There were some aspects of my time working at the bakery (I was there for 4 years) that were extremely positive and impactful on the type of professional I became, but there were also parts that I look back on aghast (mostly management issues).
All in all, it was very formative to work with the public, and to develop customer service skills. I loved that job, despite the aspects that weren't the best. The people I worked with were also some of the best co-workers I ever had.

i did a little bit of barista work when i worked at mcdonald's, and that was so fun but so stressful. i eventually quit because the workload was so much, we had hardly any staff, and the staff we did have would yell at me for the stupidest things. they would also pressure me into working overtime. i worked 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, sometimes 10. i would get 3 hours or so sleep each night. so grateful i had that work experience, but i wouldn't go back in a heartbeat.
edit: forgot to say i was 18 at the time, and this was my first job.

I recently started a new career path after having been in the coffee industry for 4 years, as a barista, cafe manager, and consultant. I love my new job but I miss the barista flow. This popped up on my feed and I had it going on one screen while working on the other. You handled yourself great and looked like you were having fun even though it was a bit stressful! We had the same issue with two handles having very different mass and wasting time to tare the scales between every shot - so we took a file one night and shaved some of the rubber handle material from one handle so they both weight exactly the same and you don't have to tare the scales between shots.

This was really satisfying but also stressful to know what it feels like in that situation. I've only had one experience in a cafe job that didn't last very long and they expect you to start off like this. No mistakes. Absolute perfection when you're just starting out and then having to deal with arrogant customers is the cherry on top.
