  • A Pioneer 1000's stock battery is good for...well...a stock machine. But I don't plan on keeping it that way for long. As such I'm installing a dual battery set up for any future electrical add on's.

    Have the exact same setup on my non-Honda SxS, it works very well. When I get my Pioneer I will keep the extra battery and isolator. I also got an Oddesey battery for the main battery when it went south, so I have 2 of them - tons of juice!

      If someone is looking to add a second battery for an off road machine, a dry cell battery is best. With no acid or water in the battery it can be mounted anywhere in any position without having to worry. Also bouncing around off road won’t cause it to spill any liquid either.

    • @StormLaker
      @StormLaker 6 років тому +1

      From the looks of it, it's pretty much the same deep cell we sell to people for their gas powered golf carts. Those are maintenance free, and pretty rugged. I asked the customer if they might want an AGM deep cycle...but honestly there's not enough room by the looks of it in this video to mount one under the hood.

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  6 років тому

      StormLaker1975 some guys mount a bigger battery under the drivers seat but most use the spot under the hood. I believe that spot is actually made for the Honda heater but it’s perfect size for the kind of battery I used. A maintenance free battery for a golf cart like you mentioned should work just fine.

    I’d like to add a second battery in my 2019 Yamaha Wolverine X2 . I’m thinking the same set up should work fine. I’m running a 30 led light bar and will be adding 2 more maybe 3 lights. 2 pods and a small 12 or 15” bar light. Since I use this machine for mostly plowing I certainly don’t want to kill my battery by over working the electronics. Great video.

    I’ve bough a Warn winch Axon. The winch installation manual says to attach one of the wires to the ignition switch but it doesn’t specify to which of the 4 wires. The ignition switch is sealed, therefore I can’t test each individual wire to find the correct one. Do you know which wire (color) should use?

    It appears from the video that the negative terminal on your secondary battery ( when in place) is on the passenger side. I panicked for minute, and wondered if I had messed up when I saw my wiring was the reverse of yours! I have the Odyssey Extreme PC925, but my negative terminal is on the driver's side.

    The "new" True isolater has a "Remote Crank Disconnect". It allows a bypass of the isolater when cranking (according to the mfg). I have been trying to figure out is a +V or Grnd is needed to bypass the isolater. I would like to put a toggle on the dash, in case it is needed. The vendor will not return my emails.
    Do you happen to know what it needs?
    Also, BTW - I ordered the same battery that is in my Harley (2009 UC). It fit fine and if my bike battery ever gives out, I have a replacement on hand.
    Thanks.

    Watched few of your videos and they've been very helpful, so thanks for the time to post em. I've also subscribed so I may learn additional information that may be helpful in the future. As for the 2nd battery install, I've thought about it ever since I purchased my P1K back in 2016 when they were 1st introduced. That said, I was one of the many which had some bad luck with my clutch issues. The dealer had replaced them twice under warranty and this recent (3rd.) time was under the "recall" policy. However, since then it has caused the machine to shut down randomly for no reason with a (#62 code). They're looking into it at the dealer currently. Nonetheless I think I will definitely be adding a 2nd battery once I get my machine back. I do have a question though, do they make a tie down for the 2nd battery or is it necessary since it kinda sit way down in there? I was thinking if it ever rolled over, it may be a problem. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    Any issues hooking up a battery tender with your dual battery setup? Which set of terminals do you hook it up to and will one tender keep both batteries charged?

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  6 років тому +3

      I ran a battery tender this winter with no issues. I just hooked it up to the main battery. Not exactly sure if it keeps both charged though. The isolator keeps from charging the second battery if the main battery needs it and keeps accessories from draining off the main battery if the second gets low while still allowing the second battery to charge so I would think it would allow the battery to charge off the tender but someone more knowledgeable than me will have to chime in to say for sure.

      chadd marsh I do have a 17 and that spot is not actually made for a second battery but for the Honda factory heater. The Battery used just happens to be the perfect size to fit when turned on its side. As far as I know there is no difference in design between the different model years

      It worked great. Granted I didn’t have anything to tax my electrical system other than the winch but with the second battery I hadn’t had the large voltage drop I had when running just one battery. The odyssey is what 98% of the guys running a second battery are using so that speaks for its self...lol.

    Voltage drop problems are alternator related ... Batteries only become an issue if the motor is not running . Load always prefers the alternator .

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  6 років тому +1

      Paul Lambert that maybe true for your typical car or truck but ATV’s and UTV’s don’t have alternators. It’s a completely different kind of charging system.

      Well I’ll be damned . I fire up my 2008 Honda Foreman ... head lights on, hand warmers on , tail light too ... take the positive off the battery and runs just perfect ... headlights get brighter as you rev it up ...
      so yes this Utv Quad obviously has a stator,rotor etc
      My 2017 Honda Pioneer 1000/5 shuts off right away ...
      So I get why adding another battery makes sense ... we don’t have a choice !!!
      The ignition can’t run without the battery ... Silly Silly Honda .
      Good to know now .
      Guess I should look at the wiring schematics on this nfg system.
      Regards
      Paul

      Yep, you got it! I know they use a magneto and stator system to keep things compact but with the accessories people add now a days with lights and sounds systems, a magneto system has a hard time keeping up.
      On a side note, you should never run an atv with the battery unhooked. You’ll fry the stator...ask me how I know...lol.

  • @tylerrohr8385
    @tylerrohr8385 6 років тому +1

    The videos you do are great. Was wondering when using the dual battery set-up what would you need to hook up a second fuse panel off the second battery?

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  6 років тому +2

      Tyler Rohr that's super simple too. You would need the fuse panel, obviously, and the main power wire to run to the second battery it's self. You will need to tap into a "Key On" power source as well to tell the fuse panel when to turn on. Here is were you can find one hondasxs.com/threads/key-on-power-illumination-and-backup-source-honda-pioneer-1000.4013/ . To finish things up you would just need to run a ground wire for the second fuse panel. You could run a wire back to the neg of either batter or just find a good spot on the frame and use a self tapping screw depending on the location you mount the second panel. If you ground directly to the frame it's a good practice to sand the paint off the frame to make sure you have good metal to metal contact for the groud. You can always hit it with a bit of paint once the ground wire is attached to keep it from rusting.

    hey great info, does the 500 follow the same steps? plow salter lights? 500 has pretty small bat.???
    And................should Bat #2 need to be identical? bigger OK? will alternator charge both bat well?

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  4 роки тому

      Yep, to run a dual battery on the 500 it would be set up the same way. A bigger battery would be ok as the job of the isolator is to keep the battery’s “separate” from each other. The isolator won’t charge the second battery if the primary needs the charge and it will also keep from draining the primary dead if the second battery’s dies. For ease of finding a spot to install it would be the main factory in going with a bigger battery. The charging system, which isn’t and alternator but a magneto, will be able to keep up with two batteries fine.

    • @scotthammond3513
      @scotthammond3513 5 років тому

      In reading the install notes for the Honda Signature heater it details that the mount location is under the driver's seat so this shouldn't be an issue if you utilize the factory unit. The other after market heaters I've researched DO call for installing in the under hood bay that most owners use for the dual battery setup. Hope this helps!

      Unfortunately the 16’s don’t have the factory installed ground. Any point to the frame will work but I no longer have the 1000 to see if there is a nearby bolt in a frame member you can utilize. Make sure, it’s an area of the frame that’s painted, you sand a little spot of the paint off to get good metal to metal contact.

    At around 7:30 mark on your video, where you sum up the job, you didn't explain what the black wire from the + on the new battery is going to... is that going to the winch solenoid? You have a red + going to the isolator... and the black + looping back towards the firewall... what is the black + going to? I know nothing about electrical and your video is going to be very helpful once I figure that out. Im running a warn 4500 winch on a P1K5LE 2017

    I have been looking into adding another battery but this one does not appear to fit a 2018 P1k5 my second battery area is 6.625" by 5.25". The PC925 is 6.64 X5.83 ? is the area for a second battery smaller in a 2018 vs a 2016?

      David Sears that I don’t know. As far as I know there have been no major changes. What specific model P1k do you have?

      Nope. That’s what the isolator is for and why you have to use one when running a dual battery setup.

    Enjoyed the video. I have an RMax 1000-4 . I’ve already added a fuse box , circuit breaker, wip lights, side view mirror lights , exogear sound bars(2) and subwoofer, and a single light bar. I also have rock lights (8) I haven installed yet. According to my adventure pro. If everything is on I maintain 13.8-14volts , so still in the green zone. This is only for 10-20 seconds lol . I know this is a lot of accessories so I’m thinking of adding a second battery under my driver seat. I would like to do this with as little re wiring as possible. How would I do this and also use a isolator. Thanks in advance

    I need your help.. I want the setup like you have...not good at wiring at all... do I need the battery isolator, blade switch, stinger, extra fuse box, relay, I will be running my radio, led pod lights, and maybe getting a winch. can you help? thanks, Gary

      Gary voigt battery isolator you definitely need and I do recommend a fuse box as it makes hooking up multiple accessories much easier and simpler. The rest strictly depends on your preference but for what you’re wanting to run aren’t a necessity

    Looks like you have the common ground hooked up to the pos. terminal of aux battery...?..mistake..?

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  6 років тому

      The common ground is hooked up to the ground terminal on the winch solenoid. The positive terminal of the auxiliary battery is the red wire that runs to the battery isolated. I’m not sure what you’re looking at.

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  6 років тому

      Ted Chamut I see what your seeing now. That black wire is what is sending power to the winch solenoid. The way I have it hooked up the wires weren’t long enough so I had to switch some around. Good eye though and good question. The black wire is acting as my power supply wire to the winch.

    It isn't advisable to run a lead acid battery in conjunction with an AGM battery in a dual battery setup you should only run like batteries in this case .

    • @mattunknown7070
      @mattunknown7070 4 роки тому

      Wouldn’t that be true if it wasn’t isolated. I could see if you were adding another battery in which is tied to the same system. Idk I’m just wondering if that would be the case or not

    What does the isolator do ?

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  3 роки тому +1

      It isolates the main battery from the second battery and does two things. First, in the event the second battery gets completely drained it prevents your accessories from draining the main battery till it dies. Second, it ensures that the main battery is always charged first before charging the second battery.

    Do you have the same issues with the 500? As far as needing a second battery to shift or run additional accessories?

    Why not just parallel attach?

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  4 роки тому

      Then your draining both batteries down at the same time which could leave you stranded. The point of an isolator isn’t to make sure your main battery never drains completely down and to make sure it’s the battery that gets charged first.

    Why dual batteries why not just one heavier duty battery ??????

    • @AppalachianMountainRiders
      @AppalachianMountainRiders  2 роки тому

      Good question! If you upgrade to a heavier duty battery you’re still running everything off ONE battery. So should you happen to run that battery dead, worst case scenario out on the trail, you are done and hopefully there is someone with you to either jump start you or tow you home. With a second battery running all your accessories, if it goes dead all you loose is power to the accessories but your main battery will be fine. You’ll still have power to start and get home! Always better to run a second battery for any electronics you add instead of running everything off the battery that’s also responsible for getting you home!

    WAY overly complicated and absolutely no reason to do it like that. All you have to do is buy a dual battery switch and that’s all there is to it!!! And a dual battery switch offers MANY more options then your way :) Google “dual batteries the easy way” Honda sxs forum
