DamageIncM I seem to base my opinions on nostalgia. The Crusade? Poor, apparently. But that album got me into metal, and will always be special to me. It opened up the previous two albums for me as well. Then out came Shogun, and holy shit my dude it was amazing, even without nostalgia to back it up. The speedy solo in the title track gave me shivers and froze my entire body. I was around for In Waves release as well, obviously, and I was disappointed by In Waves (the title track, and first single release) but it grew on me and is now very nostalgic, which is why I like it now. Vengeance Falls has a couple of good tracks, but it never became nostalgic. SitS will be here in less than a month, I can't wait to see what that'll bring for me.
I'm actually amending my previous post. Silence in the Snow is a really great album. It is not the Trivium album I was hoping for but when judged as an album unto itself, it is extremely good...
+George Baron They don't require a 7 string because you can tone it down to drop B on a 6. He even said that. So he's using the '6th string' to people with a down tuned 6 string.
You can actually just play the riff in standard E. Obviously it won't sound identical, but that's only in pitch. The riff itself can be played with a 6-string in E. When he says riffs that don't require a 7 string, he probably means the riffs won't involve 7 different strings, like chording on a BEADGB.
0:25 Down with the Sky (Corey) 3:41 Insurrection (Corey) 7:31 Shogun (Matt) 10:20 Into the Mouth of Hell we March (Matt) 12:58 Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis (Matt) 18:26 Kirisute Gomen (Matt)
The guitars = Corey play's a Dean CBV (Corey Beaulieu V-Shape) 7 String. Only Corey has / had two of these particular models. One of them black (as shown in this vid) and the other one in black too, but with silver sparkle pinstripes. These 2 are Dean Custom Shop Guitars (Made in USA). The only "on the market" model is the Dean CBV 1122 in Red with just 6 Strings. THEY'RE NOT RAZORBACKS, even if Corey was the first to play a Razorback V-Shape. Well and Matt play's a Dean ML 7 String in White with a Trivium Logo on the 12th Fret. Also a Custom Shop Model, cause' Dean never made a 7 String ML in White for the market. Matt's Guitar which you can buy, is called the Dean MKH (Matthew Kiichi Heafy) Rising Sun AGAIN with only 6 Strings.
Shoguns unique quality that shines it away from other metalcore albums is their mixture of clean singing, harsh vocals and screams. Most other metalcore will scream and then sing a bit here and there. Also Trivium has a tendency to add dedicated guitar solos with emotion and technicality. Not many metalcore bands have guitar solos. Also they did an iron maiden cover.
+Dao Yang I personally think that they got away from core since ascendancy. After that they got their own unique style. Shogun does not even have a slight hint of metalcore in it.
Kiichi Kanyos You're kind of right and wrong. the core of Metalcore (hehe core of metalcore) is heavy metal and minor verses with pop and clean choruses. i.e into the mouth of hell, throes of perdition. But as I said you were right too. They mixed growls, screams, and cleans. Something very unique from the heavy metal genre. They should have done some more of that in In Waves. that album was completely metalcore but felt a bit more uninspired in regards to their riffs and the format of their songs. Ember to inferno, Ascendancy, and Shogun were all unique albums with very excellent writing.
I like how matt explains that is not necessary spend money in a 7 string guitar... just thicker strings for a 6 string, and then tune tour guitar in B Standard, and voila... problem solved! And for those guys who are not sure if is that possible, those guitars (matt's and corey's), are 25.5 scale lenght. So, is not necessary a 7 string.
Man, how did they go from riffs like this to generic stuff like Black, Built to Fall and Chaos Reigns on In Waves. This stuffs just so much more interesting, captivating and powerful. Here's hoping silence in the snow brings some of this back
the riffs and solos on this album are just insane, it's always fun to listen to this guys playing guitar
Shogun was a masterpiece, I wish they'd go back to this style

In Waves is a different but still very good album IMO. Their last great one to me.
MegaTechpc Same here man, it's good
+Deku Scrub Agree. I thought Shogun was their "Master of Puppets". No throw away songs.
I'm actually amending my previous post. Silence in the Snow is a really great album. It is not the Trivium album I was hoping for but when judged as an album unto itself, it is extremely good...
"I'll play some riffs that don't require the 7th string since most people wont have one"
-First 3 riffs use the 7th string
+George Baron lol
+George Baron They don't require a 7 string because you can tone it down to drop B on a 6. He even said that. So he's using the '6th string' to people with a down tuned 6 string.
lol no dude, he said hes gonna try and show riffs that dont require a 7 string OR require tuning DOWN.
You can actually just play the riff in standard E. Obviously it won't sound identical, but that's only in pitch. The riff itself can be played with a 6-string in E.

The entire song insurrection doesn't use the low b string once. Neither does callisto. You guys are just idiots in this thread.
Heafy is such a talented, down to earth, laid back guy. Super inspirational.
8 years later watching this, I was going to comment much the same. Seems like a down to earth dude.
Two days ago I bought a 7 String specifically to play songs from Shogun :3
I bought matts seven string for the same reason
I bought my first seven string in seventh grade for the same reason.
I Brought Coreys Seven String to shuv in my ass
I want one, but... I'll need months of saving money xD
@@zdf14 respect ✊
I like how they mess up now and then.. reminds me we're all human and I can even be as good as them one day
matt heafy and corey beaulieu are such great guitarists!
That Insurrection riff sounds so awesome but is such a pain in the ass to play up to speed!
DamageIncM
Yeah haha. I'm fine with it now. It was a bit of a pain in the arse to learn at first though :p
0:25 Down with the Sky (Corey)
3:41 Insurrection (Corey)
7:31 Shogun (Matt)
10:20 Into the Mouth of Hell we March (Matt)
12:58 Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis (Matt)
18:26 Kirisute Gomen (Matt)
I love the Shogun album SO much... It's so rediculously powerful
18:41 - 18:51 has got to be one of the riffs of the decade, so fucking brutal!!
It's got an Impending Doom feel to it, like shit finna go down, hard.
"Down the Sky"..... No Corey. You forgot a word... Bad
"bad" xD
Corey is such a DUDE! I´d love to have some beers with him !
7:06: you can't hide that 0-3-5 Corey
Woohoo "it was writen on a park bench, in copenhagen", wish i had walked past there that day.
19:25 Awesone riff!!
7:48 probably my favorite riff ever
just got my 7 string, lets go!
"so hard to play slow", ye :D
matt when is messes up is so adorable haha,
How can King remember how to play all his parts for Down From The Sky, but not remember the correct title of the song?
I don't even play guitar and I'm still watching, these guys are just too awesome
the amount of fan service these guys do is mind boggling. they really are amazing people
"Fast tre-mellow picking" -Corey
You sir, just made my day!
These guys are so great. I'm happy I was exposed to such great music at such a young age. I'm 13 and I've seen them twice live. My favorite band. Ever
Are they still your favourite band ever?
@@thehuntressdanni2972 are they still YOUR favorite band?
I like Matt, he makes a rookie like me belive i can play like that, with practice.
SHITPAGE GOAWAY You can! With lots of practice! :D
Corey, you are badass my brother. love you guys.
Metal musicians are so awesome and friendly xD I love it
I love Matt (no homo)
+MattyPS oh thank god you said no homo i almost thought you were a gay for a second
+Mac Fitch Maybe he's gay, but only likes Matt platonically... :|
+MattyPS lol
fuck this shit lol
I LOVE MATT, VERY BI
Such cool guys.
Haha when Matt messes up. He's hilarious about it. Amazing guitarist.
I want that Dean Matt is using! plus his tone is sick!!! just sounds so full and chunky
I love the riff at 2:52. It's very different but sounds really cool.
When you write a masterpiece so unique even the people who created it hard to play..respect trivium!
Shoguns the album, screams are superb, riffs are spectacular, solos are god like, all round fuckin amazing album

7:43 that riff tho
Kudos to you!, amazing video!
Riffing like their life depended on it.
Agreed. I actually liked The Crusade lol but Shogun is by far their masterpiece.
Awesome Matt and Corey

I think what really sets this album apart is the theme of Greek and Japanese myths and such. That combined with 7 strings is quite epic.
Trivium is Heavy Metal not Metalcore
I fucking love these guys :D Matt is so down to earth
I like these guys, very down to urf.
Shogun is pure love ❤😍🥰
Thanks a lot!
Perfection.
i love this video!
my favorite trivium album! in to the mouth of hell, my fav!
yeah thanks for the slow Corey that helps a lot
even though they fuck up. I still ask myself are they even human? one of the ultimate guitarists
both of matt and corey
Damn he sure lives his bar chords Matt doesn’t he
where do i get the making of shogun documentary
???
Covers4you It came with the special edition of Shogun, try eBay
james mckernan thank you very much !!!!
It used to be on UA-cam but it's not anymore for some reason...😔
5:37 Sooooooooo awesome on it's own!
Its more like "Down'na sky" :P
I love how he makes mistakes, he is human too after all!
The riff at 1:33 reminds me of Pantera for some strange reason.
That rhythm section that Matt plays during the Shogun solos at around 8:02 sounds a lot like Caught in a Mosh by Anthrax
Still think that when you se the split screen of Matts is like he has huge hands. Still make me laugh. XD
Loooool its true Hahahahahaha still laughing
They should do this with every album
down the sky
Lol, I caught that. Down FROM the sky.
Hehe down the sky
That's a good song lmfao. I like all Trivium songs.
18:30 kirisute gomen
man I wish Trivium still did more of these sick thrashy riffs. now days their riffs are a lot more metalcorish.
i find it funny he says he would show 6 string riffs and the first riff he plays is one of the 3 in that song that require the 7th
yeah, that's how i play it, i'm just saying its interesting
Theres no b string in insurrection. You're playing it wrong. Its a 6 string song just like callisto to a star in heaven.
The Song was originally called Down the Sky, but they changed the name as they changed the lyrics ;)
I fucking love torn between Scylla and Charybdis. I wish they would play it live
id kill to get one of those guitars
Who is watching this in 2017 hoping they will make another album with 7 strings?
Terry Voorbij Your wish came true
John Bergeman it came true even further too
Matt "I don't know music theory" Heafy
his pinky looks so strong and stable
I like how matt explains that is not necessary spend money in a 7 string guitar... just thicker strings for a 6 string, and then tune tour guitar in B Standard, and voila... problem solved!

sound like a black metal pop song??...Matt you are a fucking beast !
🤘🏻
That is exactly why I prefer to call it galloping. But I have to admit that rolling my tounge to the rhythm is also legit :D
Corey, you tricked us all.
,,You don´t have to buy a 7string or tune your guitar down."
*play the B string too in the first riff*
Damn :D
Anyone knows why Matt says 'It helps me' about not having fret markers ?
7:50 Shogun ♥♥♥♥♥♥
WE ARE THE FIRE
Man, how did they go from riffs like this to generic stuff like Black, Built to Fall and Chaos Reigns on In Waves. This stuffs just so much more interesting, captivating and powerful. Here's hoping silence in the snow brings some of this back
Black is cool, it's really dark.
Judging by what we've seen so far, I can almost guarantee SITS will be commercial, sell out trash. The fury of Trivium in this era is dead and gone.
I think (hope) it'll come back somewhere down the line. Might be years from now but it's a shame for so much talent and potential going to waste
+GlesgaGreg SITS makes VF sound heavy and complex.
(sigh) yup
Down the sky... no corey.. just no..
NO COOKIE FOR YOU. ._.
Wut? :|
in the Chapman studio Matt say Down the Sky before song starts maybe is more fast and easy to say :p
How does one get such a perfect, bassy, Matt Heafy tone?!? His tone is beautiful lmao
Anthony Monterosso buy his 7 string, 4x12 with v30s and a 5150 or 6505
where can I find the whole documentary??
I want a seven string so badly now
i wish i could play the guitar like matt.
matt:"the riff is hard to play slow" XD
KoHung Wang then i can't imagine how it would be played at original speed xD
If Trivium and Vildhjarta combined, holy shit.
Weird combo but i like it
18:41 19:15 GODLIKE picking. Holy shit.
haha i like it when he says "uh oh"
Also, HOLY FUCKING TREMOLO PICKING IN KG. Goddamn.
Could they not find a guitar with fret dots on the fretboard?
Down the Sky
Fucking love Trivium!
Shogun is Trivium's Master of Puppets.
oh oh :D
9:34 proceeds to name most of the chords, fails at one and says I don't know music theory
if those arent triplets then what do you think they are?
10:20 and 11:36 My favorite part
