How to Paint Brake Calipers

  • Here's how to paint the brake calipers on any vehicle!
Painting the brake calipers can make your car stand out from all the other boring silver and beige cars on the road. This is especially true if you've got alloy rims and can see the brake calipers.
Using a bright, contrasting color will make them pop and stand out from the car. It'll draw attention to your wheels and your ride, look good, and prevent the caliper surface from becoming rusty.
Standard OEM calipers usually come in a dull, silver or gray finish. Sometimes this oxidizes over time and builds up surface rust. Surface rust on brakes makes the vehicle look much older and uncared for. Even if its an understated luxury car, simply painting them black will be much better than leaving them to rust!
This video demonstrates how to paint the calipers on a Toyota Solara, but the procedure is the same for many vehicles. VHT Brake caliper spray paint is used. The most thorough method to paint the calipers is to remove all the brake components and caliper from the vehicle and paint them off the car. This will ensure an even coverage and protection on all the components. However, this requires re-bleeding the brake system when reassembling, which can be time consuming.
The easiest DIY method at home, by no means professional, would be to mask off all areas on the vehicle that you don't want sprayed, and spray paint the caliper. This includes masking the rotor, pads, hub, suspension components, wheel well and the entire fender.
The surface is then prepared with first a wire brush, then sand paper, and brake cleaner or paint thinner to remove any residue. Priming the surface is recommended if the metal is bare.
Apply two thin layers of paint, followed by one medium coat. Clear coating can be done, if desired, but in this case, the blue paint was shiny enough. One can is not enough for 4 calipers if you coat each three times, so be conservative.
Over-spray can be removed from body panels with a clay bar or rubbing compound.

What are the key parts to mask off when doing it by brush? I have a 4 pot front and 2 pot rear for my WRX. So far it looks like the boots on either side, the brake bleeder screw, the rotor and the pad. Is that correct?

Hard to beat a spray finish but must admit I brushed on. Took a little more time than spraying but I was in no rush and it saved having to mask everything off if spraying.
    And it always fucking rains!

0:23 I see you had some polyurethane lower front sway bar bushings. Did they make a noticeable difference? I've had a TRD rear sway bar and bushings for years, but left the front alone because TRD never made polyurethane bushings for the front. I see Energy Suspension has them though.

What kind of paint did you use? Try using a high gloss paint on a primed surface. A clear coat will make it shiny but not glossy, and might be less durable over time.

Methylated Spirit is cheaper than brake cleaner in a spray can......and no aerosol propellant....
The beauty of Meths is that it can be put into and dispensed from any empty spray bottle you have spare........AND......their is no need to wipe it off with a cloth, (which can leave fibres behind it), because it evaporates.....
Meths is the easiest cleaner and degreaser to use because it evaporates.....
It can be used on brake pads surfaces if get any contamination on them........ALSO........the best thing to clean the outside surface of a newly fitted bulb....gets rid of any finger marks that can compromise the longevity of the bulb.

      One observation concerning brake calipers......
Whilst there is obviously heat produced between pads and rotors when braking.......this starts to dissipate when you take your foot off the pedal.
As a consequence there is very little heat transferred to the calipers themselves, so it is not really necessary to spend money on special, so called 'high temperature' paints......
I have used Hammerite from a can and it covers all the caliper very well.
Obviously there will be paints similar to Hammerite, but if you think about it any paint will suffice.
The secret is to let it dry adequately and in this way a couple of coats can be put on to ensure good coverage.
I recently removed rear calipers and separated them in order to remove rust and road dirt / grease.
A little bit of soft chipping at any loose rust, (remember calipers are cast iron so no heavy hammering), followed by close in work with a wire brush, before degreasing with some methylated spirits sprayed on the parts, (meths evaporates)......then spray paint before reassembly and fitting back on the vehicle.

  • @jameshennighan8193
    @jameshennighan8193 5 років тому

    One additional thought.......
If you brush some washing-up liquid onto small or practically inaccessible parts.......AND LET IT DRY............it will seal them from any paint over spray.
Once the pain it dry you can simply run some water over the parts with the washing-up liquid on them........or just leave it for the rain to wash it off when you take the car out on a wet day.
    Hope this might be helpful......?

How do you cover the rotor underneath the caliper?

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  10 років тому +5

Use as much tape as you can. Some paint will get on the rotor. No problem as it will wear off instantly when you drive the car and apply the brakes.

A Banjo, (end of brake hose), fitting......or to give it its correct name, an Annular Fitting......is best secured, when detached from the brake caliper, by passing a nut and bolt through it, having a fibre washer and also a metal washer on each side of it.
When this is tightened it will prevent or minimise the loss of brake fluid from the braking system, by completely sealing the centre of the Annular Fitting.
Once tightened the brake hose can be secured, (Annular Fitting uppermost), with a plastic cable-tie to the road spring or shock absorber, giving you the space to work on the caliper, pads and rotors.
When the Annular Fitting is re-secured to the caliper you then just need to open the bleed valve enough to fill the caliper itself.....though obviously you have to watch the main brake cylinder fluid level.
Result is minimal loss of brake fluid whilst working on caliper, pads and rotors......... no air in pipework.......and just the need to let enough fluid into the caliper when it is connected back up.......ensuring you purge the caliper of any air it may contain.
There may be some slight loss of fluid when you first detach the Annular Fitting, but this is minimal if you have your sealing nut and bolt and washers ready......and will only amount to a thimble full.

Will give it a go with gloss black but think I'd prefer brushing on instead. Interesting that Rustoleum's caliper paint video recommends using aluminum foil instead of paper because it holds its shape around certain parts. They didn't cover the rubber sliders like you did for some reason which is surprising. They also didn't prime or clear coat.

rkgsd Brushing is probably easier because you don't have to mask everything for overspray. I wouldn't paint the slider rubbers as they'll harden up and become useless. No need for clear coat unless you've got a show car with some nice complimenting rims. Brake dust will coat it in a week.

If you want the paint to last longer, you should have used primer first, then the color if your choice and finally 2 coats of clear for resistance.
Good job though, but you should change those ugly lug nuts bro; it ruins the job. Cheers.

+Steven hickman Actually instead of spraying I've moved on to painting with a brush. Its more durable and no overspray.

Absolutely not- it’s a huge job to remove the calipers and bleed the brakes. This is only for show/accent, why make the job so complicated by removing them. How about you remove them and have fun doing so. Great video.

Uncle Lido huge job??? It’s 2 bolts and easy as hell, yes they look good but my ocd wouldn’t let me do it this way.

Why on earth would you waste time to paint brake calipers? Next how to paint a muffler, Only teens would do that.

I actually painted my muffler black

After such painting, after a month, the brake caliper will be covered with rust and the paint will come off and it will look nasty.
