  • Today we are going to create a sketch and color it. I did not want to overwhelm you with something complicated. So, I created an easy and cute baby bulldog. I hope you will try to draw it along with me. Just slow down the video if you decide to do so.
    *** Royalty-free music tracks and sound effects are from AUDIO HERO.***🎵🎶
    DON'T HAVE THE BRUSHES I USED HERE? This is where to get them:
    conceptartempire.com/free-kri...
    I downloaded the Krita Brushkit v8.2 and then chose the Painterly Mix Brushes.
    We are going to cover many things today... See the summary and the timestamps below:
    SUMMARY (tools and techniques that will be used in this video):
    a) The brush we will use to create the sketch is called “Fill_circle”.
    b) Set its size to 15 pixels.
    c) Use the F2 key on your keyboard to rename your layers.
    d) In order to create a perfectly symmetrical sketch, we will use the “Horizontal mirror tool”.
    e) To Color our cartoon character, we will convert the “SKETCH” layer to a “Colorize Mask”.
    f) From the toolbox, we will select the “Colorize Mask Editing” tool.
    g) To fill the sketch with colors, we will choose a brush from the “Digital” tag called the “Pixel_Art_Fill”.
    CHAPTERS
    00:00 Introduction + creating a new canvas.
    00:48 Setting up to start sketching.

    06:28 Comparing the two sketches.
    07:48 Coloring the sketch using a fast technique (You will LOVE it!).

    Thank you. I've found SO MANY supposedly 'instructional' channels, that are just talented artists wanting to show-off how good they are with Krita. They can't seem to understand that if we could do the things they seem to consider as 'basics' we wouldn't be watching these type of videos.

      @BladeQuillartacademy I just have one quick question: where can I find the "tools options" menu you mention at 11:19? I've looked everywhere and I can't find it! 😢

    • @BladeandQuill
      @BladeandQuill  8 місяців тому +1

      Hello Dory. Sometimes, the TOOL OPTIONS docker hides behind the COLOR WHEEL (ADVANCED COLOR SELECTOR docker).
      If it isn't there... Let's check if the docker is actually activated.
      The best way to know if your docker is on the interface or not (activated), is to go to SETTINGS, choose DOCKERS and at the bottom, see if the box by TOOL OPTIONS is checked or not.
      If it is checked, the docker is hiding behind another docker. Look at each of your dockers and try to see if you see additional tabs.
      If the box is not checked, is because you didn't add it on the interface.
      Just check the box and the docker will appear.
      Hope this helps.

      @@BladeandQuill Thank you so, so much for all this information! I haven't been using Krita for very long and I didn't know any of this. Thank you for such wonderful video. I am not sure what I did wrong, but shift + backspace does not add a shadow for me. It keeps showing Freehand selection.

    • @BladeandQuill
      @BladeandQuill  2 роки тому +1

      Hello. Sorry about the late reply. Shift + Backspace is a short cut to fill a selection with a color you selected. Did you have your free brush activated and chose a color in the color wheel first. Then, selected an area with the free hand selection or the magic wand? This is when you can use the trick of Shift + backspace button. When the color fill your selection, you can undo the selection. Try again... Now, regarding why this is not working.... I was told that, at times, windows updates can mess up Krita. I do not know if this is relevant and correct, as I am not a computer engineer. That said, I was advised a long time ago to remove Krita from my computer and reload it again. Which version are you using?

      Hello Suzanne. Thanks for watching my videos. I appreciate your trust in me. 😊 Regarding what I use to draw... I own two tablets. A Wacom Intuos Pro that I bought in 2017. This tablet is called a Drawing Pen Tablet (Without Screen/Display). It still works great, but I stopped using it.
      For the past year, I am using a Huion Kamvas Pro 16 that I purchased a year ago. This tablet is called a Drawing Pen Display Tablet (With Screen/Display).
      That said, please know that I am not sponsored by any of these giant corporations. I happen to buy them and love them.
      For starters, I'd suggest starting with a pen tablet, like the Wacom I use. It's cheap (less than $400). Huion also manufactures pen tablets, if you were curious. I cannot really advise you on which one to buy, as there are so many drawing tablets on the market, I wouldn't know where to begin. If you have access to a consumer report, see if they have an article on the best tablets to buy. Overwise, check out UA-cam and watch tablet reviews. I hope that helps.

    Edit - It works. Looks way better.
    Now I gotta perfect my linework. I can't digitally sketch, doesn't feel naturally to my hand because I must "feel" the paper and pencil. So then once I'm tracing my working digitally it's still not picture perfect like my sketch because my tablet doesn't have a screen and so I'm looking at the screen instead of my hand and it's not natural to me. So therefore, my work doesn't come out with that natural look.

    thank you for your video. Can you change the borekgound color of each layer?

    • @BladeandQuill
      @BladeandQuill  9 місяців тому

      Hello. Layers are meant to be transparent. Let's say that you have the background layer and on the top, you have two layers. If you completely fill the top layer with an opaque color, you won't be able to see the layer below, nor the background. You usually fill the background layer with a color or pattern or whatever you want. I hope that makes sense.

    • @BladeandQuill
      @BladeandQuill  10 місяців тому

      Hello. There is a trick. First choose your color in the color wheel. It will become the foreground color. Select the area you want to color using the lasso tool or the contiguous selection tool (aka the Magic Wand). Then, hit SHIFT + Backspace to fill the selection with your color. I hope I understood your question. Let me know if I was wrong and I'll try again... Thanks.

    • @BladeandQuill
      @BladeandQuill  2 місяці тому

      The color wheel usually looks greyed out only when a filter mask or a transparency mask is active on your layer. Have you checked your active layer's mode? It should be set to "Paint Layer" for the color wheel to function normally. Here's how to verify:
      Check your layer. Ensure the highlighted layer (your active layer) has its mode set to "Paint Layer." If not, right-click on the layer thumbnail. A menu will appear. Look towards the bottom for an option called "Convert." Click on it. Select "Convert to Paint Layer" from the submenu.
      This might not be the exact cause of the issue. Unfortunately, since I can't see your interface, I am not able to provide you with a better diagnostic. Hopefully, these steps will help! Another option is to uninstall and reinstall your version or get the latest version. Best of luck.

    "We're gonna use the fill circle brush." That would be great but according to Krita, the brush doesn't exist!

    • @BladeandQuill
      @BladeandQuill  Рік тому

      Hi. You may not have the "Krita_3_Default_Resources.bundle"activated. The brush is located in that bundle.
      If you have the new Krita 5.0 installed go to SETTINGS. Choose, MANAGE RESOURCE LIBRARIES. Click on the Krita_3_Default_Resources.bundle to select it. Then, at the very bottom of the panel, click on the button ACTIVATE. Then, click on CLOSE. Now, your bundle is activated. When you go to the CHOOSE BRUSH PRESET icon, you will find the brush.
      Also, just as a quick reminder, you can upload more brushes to your krita. Here is the link to free brushes: docs.krita.org/en/resources_page.html#resources-page
      Hope this helped. Have a great day.
