(thank you so much to the person who let me know!!)
dear lady, i love your video, its very informational. there is one thing i noticed. you dont seem to understand resolution that well its true if your resolution is higher on a picture defined by length with in inches or centimeters etc it will be harder for your laptop as it will contain more pixels in that immage then if you had a lower resolution. however.... you created your image with a with and length defined in pixels. 2000 x 2000 pixels to be correct, when you then have a low or high resolutions is of no concern it will stil be 2000 x 2000 pixels. your laptop wont go faster or get more laggy of you put a high or low resolution in it. the 300 people talk about is a resolution of 300 pixels per inch and is more there for printing as mst printers use 300 dots per inch in most prints. setting your canvas as 300 means it will print out at a certain size. but as i said you did not define your canvas in a size by inches or centimeters but by 2000 x 2000 pixels you can have a resolution of 1 or 300000 it will still be 2000 x 2000 pixels for the laptop to work with your resolution says ppi meaning pixels per inch and that corresponds to your printer dpi meaning dots per inch. so once you set your canvas to 2000x2000 pixels puttinng a higher or lower number resolution in the box wont change your image quality in any way. so its better for you to set it to 300 in case you wish to print. love the video a lot btw. good work, just subscribed

JENNA!💕 - Welcome back! I haven't touched Krita in a hot minute, definitely will be using this tutorial if I decide to give it a go again! ^^
Friendly reminder she started in 2012. Some ppl thinks it's talent. But I honestly think talent only ignite your passion. It is up to your love for it and determination of self-improving that will maintain that flame.
I very much appreciate you showing us what you know. Coming from someone who doesn't do digital art barely at all, I was pretty much able to keep up with everything up to the brush selection. After that, your method of how to draw/paint makes me want to have more detailed tutorials covering all that.
It's honestly amazing how many options there are now for digital art. Solid tutorials like this are a great resource for anyone just learning the basics of each. Great channel. Kudos!🙂
I only just found out about this software. This is the first tutorial I've watched. I don't agree with the people saying it 'went downhill' or was bad because it was fast. This is a good overview of the software. I'm sure there are loads of other video's dealing with specifics. Thanks. And you are a fabulous artist.
This was SUPER helpful. I'm coming back to illustration again after TWENTY YEARS of not doing it at all. Learning to use digital tools is a game-changer!
Professional artist: draws good sketch after years of practice unfunny commenters with nothing interesting to say: OMG!!! HER SKETCH IS BETTER THAN MY WHOLE PIECE
i get quite annoyed when i see comments like OMG HER DRAWING IS SO GOOD I CANT EVEN DRAW A STICKMAN!! its not like anyone is born with skills , every can draw if they wanted to.
I was having really bad problems with pen lag and gave up on using Krita on my newish computer, but your second tip on the trilinear filtering seems to have fixed it! It's now running even smoother than I expected, so thank you!
Just got a Wacom pad from my children and downloaded Krita - had a play, went online, found this video. Wow! You’ve definitely inspired me. Amazing artwork and commentary
Krita has been one of my comfort painting programmes for a while, I just really adore the brushes. Something that I would find super helpful would be a sort of more in-depth video on digital colour picking, like picking colours that look nice, picking colours for shadows and for lighting, making all the colours work together, making it look somewhat realistic without the colours looking muddy, stuff like that. For some reason this is something I struggle with a lot digitally even when sticking to the basic 'rules', while I'm doing fine with it with traditional art.
I've never used the clipping mask button ... its like 5 steps fewer than my routine for shading... I'm happy to have found it but I'VE BEEN USING KRITA FOR YEARS .... Welcome to digital art I guess😅. I'm trying to get more into paining as opposed to my old style of line-art and coloring, and this tutorial helped a lot!
unbelievable!! When I drew, my lines were never perfect. I made the beginnings of this video things, my lines became very clear and beautiful. thank you
This is actually my first time doing digital art (taking a class for it at my college) and my teacher recommended krita. This video helped so much because I no nothing really about the software
Everyone struggling to find her brushes in 2022: go to settings -> manage resource libraries -> click on krita_3_default and then activate. I spent way to long googling. Hope this helps :)
i disliked it because she didn't tell us anything on how to actually paint in krita - she just talked about brushes. shes very talented - but this is not a tutorial
Noo they aren't custom, did you try the method at 03:00? Go to settings->manage resources and move 'Krita_3_Default_Resources' from Inactive Bundles over to Active Bundles. That should hopefully fix the issue! 😃 (let me know if this works for you!)
@@JennaDrawing I switched the inactive bundles to active and press ok, but whenever I look at the presets they don't show, and also if I go back to the active bundles it only shows that Krita 4 Resources are active even if I change them. Thanks for the help! It may be a unique problem?
I wish there had been this type of help when I was learning digital Art, you do such a fantastic job explaining the ins and outs of this program! and in so many of your other videos Wonderfully done! I hope you have continued success and please take care and be safe out there!
I love all the texture you were able to add to this painting! I was really mesmerized by the highlights in the fabric of her overalls, it looks awesome! The spotty lighting fits the mood so well, too. Thanks for all the tips for this program! I haven't tried it yet but I do keep recommending it when people ask about free drawing programs.
Hello Jenna. I found your tutorial extremely informative. Painting isn't my gift. I'm really a crafter. I turned to your tutorial because I'm interested in finding a graphics program to make designs for my stencils. As you can probably guess, I've never used a digital art program either. I really appreciate the tips you shared about Krita. I've downloaded it and am learning to use it.
I m a beginner and this really was really helpful ! Thank you sooo much ,Still I need help with few things actually 😅 . I am really bad at colouring things and blending , can u give some tips , also I don't understood clipping layer so that colours won't go outside object and also how I can overlay shadows or other details over other things , please help .😓
Hiya Jenna, I know this is a few years old now, but this is the best instruction video I've found for Krita. Although there is a few good ones out there, none of them have such a clear way of description and all the little side notes and tips and tricks you talk about along the way are excellent. Thank you for helping an old dog learn new tricks.
Ooo this is super helpful, my photoshop trial just ran out and I can’t afford to pay for the subscription - so I can’t wait to try out Krita!! Thanks Jenna!
Just so you know, changing the dpi will not speed up or slow down your drawing. The 300dpi only describes you how the image will be displayed, it doesn't change the pixel size in any way. So if you work on an image that's 3000 pixels wide at 300 dpi, then it will be exactly the same file size as 3000 pixels wide at 150dpi. It's just that the size will be reported as 10 inches for the former, and 20 inches for the latter. It won't speed up your computer in any way :)
I'm COMPLETELY new to digital art and purchased. Huion drawing tablet without realizing I needed a drawing program 1st, I thought it came with the software already installed on the tablet itself. I didn't want to spend 400+ on programs like corel paint, nor did I want to sign up for a subscription. Glad I found Krita, it really is a great program
That thing which you told about a painting looking entirely different after a break or something, is totally true I have had such experiences with traditional artworks
so I have a question, everytime I use my pen to sketch, and when I try to, it makes a circle when I hold it for a certain amount of time, then it brings me to like a Mini Paint Brush thing, how do i get rid of that?
She has a link to imgur in the description of this video. It shoes you how to go into the settings and activate the krita 3 brushes that she recommended. Hope this helps. I thought the same thing at first lol.
Returning here 2 years after I first saw the video, I realised just now how much I have learnt. I am so grateful for your channel, everytNice tutorialng
Lmao....painting tutorial but we just passed through the painting part..... In the end it was just shading and blending- My question after watching this video thoroughly..... The first time you "painted" how were you able to color it all inside the line art - like that was fast 😭
This was really helpful! I've just gotten back into digital art and downloaded Krita and this video helped me get my bearings. Definitely subscribing and I'll be checking out your other videos! :D
yeah, same here... none of them have those names for me update: settings > manage resources > move default resources to active bundles and hit OK > create new canvas. you have to use underscores instead of spaces when searching.
Here's where to find the brushes: imgur.com/c2GIGmQ If they don't show up for you, try the method at 3:00 and it should display them! (I hope this helps, please let me know if that doesn't work for you!)
@@JennaDrawing For some reason even when I move Krita 3 to the active bundle it doesn't work. When I close the manage resources again Krita 3 automatically returns to the inactive bundle :( Oh never mind! I just needed to restart!
This is such a helpful tutorial! I eventually found all your favourite brushes and added them to my favourites. It really helped to see how and when you use all these brushes in your process. Thank you for the subtitles! I used them to make notes.
I use mirroring and flipping for difficult brush stroke angles. Your hand naturally wants to move in certain ways. Trying to force it to move differently leads to awkward inconsistent lines.
Great work, Im finding it difficult to transition into digital art after working with real paint and canvas for so long, it’s nice to get a fresh perspective on things, the adorable Aussie accent definitely hooked me.
Lovely tutorial! Krita will always be in close second for me to Paintstorm. Such a good art program with so much customisation fairly good performance. What do you prefer more at the moment, krita or procreate?
Thank you so much!! I'd say I definitely prefer Procreate but that's more because I prefer drawing on an iPad - everything feels so quick and streamlined! But when I'm drawing on my computer Krita and CSP are always my go-to options atm!! And oo I haven't tried Paintstorm before, I'll have to give that a go!! ^^
Thank you so, so much for this incredibly helpful tutorial!! ❤ I've just started practising with Krita, and it's been pretty overwhelming. You've really narrowed it down to the most essential functions, and I'm feeling a lot more confident now! 😊 Thank you!
fist time here as new to digital painting so far, GOOD, as new computer and new interest over 75 years old. now you got my interest with Krita. looking forward for MORE tutorials
@@shaunapurcell9436 you'll get used to it! i switched to krita after using medibang for a long time and i definitely prefer krita (imo) in the end its just a drawing program and there's no need to panic, but i do understand why you would panic. just do whatever you did when using firealpaca for the first time- mess around with the tools, the brushes, the settings, and you might find something that you like if you dont end up liking krita, just hit that uninstall button and use whatever drawing program you're comfortable with
Ohhh No, You started painting when you were only 12. I am now 25 and still dont know what career options should I choose. Its very depressing. You are really amazing girl
An additional note having praised the clip idea is that you do not need to select the infiinty thingy. That is inherit alpha, you need to work on layers beneath the clip group it seems.
This is a very helpful tutorial. I am mainly a photographer and artist for digital art with experience in pen & paper works. All my work is made with trackball and keyboard, but I got me a drawing tablet recently. Right now I am in the process of testing programs for DTs and Krita was my first choice, since it's free. I started using Krita too. It's a good photoshop alternative. please checking my videos too. I would like an expert's opinion.
dear lady, i love your video, its very informational.
there is one thing i noticed. you dont seem to understand resolution that well
its true if your resolution is higher on a picture defined by length with in inches or centimeters etc it will be harder for your laptop as it will contain more pixels in that immage then if you had a lower resolution.
however.... you created your image with a with and length defined in pixels.
2000 x 2000 pixels to be correct, when you then have a low or high resolutions is of no concern it will stil be 2000 x 2000 pixels.
your laptop wont go faster or get more laggy of you put a high or low resolution in it.
the 300 people talk about is a resolution of 300 pixels per inch and is more there for printing as mst printers use 300 dots per inch in most prints.
setting your canvas as 300 means it will print out at a certain size.
but as i said you did not define your canvas in a size by inches or centimeters but by 2000 x 2000 pixels
you can have a resolution of 1 or 300000 it will still be 2000 x 2000 pixels for the laptop to work with
your resolution says ppi meaning pixels per inch and that corresponds to your printer dpi meaning dots per inch.
so once you set your canvas to 2000x2000 pixels puttinng a higher or lower number resolution in the box wont change your image quality in any way.
so its better for you to set it to 300 in case you wish to print.
love the video a lot btw. good work, just subscribed

Aaa thank you Zoë!! 💖 happy to be posting again! ^^

Friendly reminder she started in 2012. Some ppl thinks it's talent. But I honestly think talent only ignite your passion. It is up to your love for it and determination of self-improving that will maintain that flame.
I downloaded Krita in my PC, but I had no idea how to ever start. Your tutorial is a breath of fresh air! Thank you so much😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I very much appreciate you showing us what you know. Coming from someone who doesn't do digital art barely at all, I was pretty much able to keep up with everything up to the brush selection. After that, your method of how to draw/paint makes me want to have more detailed tutorials covering all that.
How is your rough sketch 10x better than my full attempt at the artwork 😭😭😭
It's honestly amazing how many options there are now for digital art. Solid tutorials like this are a great resource for anyone just learning the basics of each. Great channel. Kudos!🙂

This is probably the best "Art software for beginners tutorial" that I've ever seen!!!
I only just found out about this software. This is the first tutorial I've watched. I don't agree with the people saying it 'went downhill' or was bad because it was fast. This is a good overview of the software. I'm sure there are loads of other video's dealing with specifics. Thanks. And you are a fabulous artist.
5:33 Her first ever painting is better than anything I have ever done! Super useful tutorial!
This was SUPER helpful. I'm coming back to illustration again after TWENTY YEARS of not doing it at all. Learning to use digital tools is a game-changer!

unfunny commenters with nothing interesting to say: OMG!!! HER SKETCH IS BETTER THAN MY WHOLE PIECE
OMFG..! IKRRRR
I agree 100%. Get ready for the hurt boys though.
i get quite annoyed when i see comments like
OMG HER DRAWING IS SO GOOD I CANT EVEN DRAW A STICKMAN!!
its not like anyone is born with skills , every can draw if they wanted to.

I love krita ! its one of my favorite drawing programs and it's second only to CSP for me
Same it’s so great!! I bought CSP not too long ago and I’m so excited to try it out!! :D
@@JennaDrawing , if would be to chose between CSP and Krita, which of them would you recommend more ? Thank you.
I agree ♥️ lighting and color harmony
Yasss! Finally another video, I was waiting for a month...
K, im watching this even tho i dont use *Krita* I use *Procreate*

Thank you! 😭
@@soyduck4682 You're welcome!
Thanku
Whoever disliked this was jealous of her skill.
i disliked it because she didn't tell us anything on how to actually paint in krita - she just talked about brushes. shes very talented - but this is not a tutorial
@@rachelfoss9447 She ain't wrong tho, painting is not program specific. If she's mentioning a software, she's most probably gonna talk about it only.
/the dislike button being now disabled/ 💀
How Do I get those Brushes? I'm on 4.3 and I only have stock brushes, Are those custom, or were they imported? Thank you
same! I only have like 2 of the brushes they said they liked
Noo they aren't custom, did you try the method at 03:00? Go to settings->manage resources and move 'Krita_3_Default_Resources' from Inactive Bundles over to Active Bundles. That should hopefully fix the issue! 😃 (let me know if this works for you!)
@@JennaDrawing I did, but could not find "bristles hairy". Found the rest of them though, thank you very much.
@@JennaDrawing I switched the inactive bundles to active and press ok, but whenever I look at the presets they don't show, and also if I go back to the active bundles it only shows that Krita 4 Resources are active even if I change them. Thanks for the help! It may be a unique problem?
@Jacqueline Elisabeth Mariacher de Escobar Yeah I've fixed it by now, that definitely works
THANK YOU! I’m transitioning from procreate on an iPad to krita on a Wacom and your video has helped me so much!
Now that's a wow painting 🎉
So helpful, thank you!
I'd love a more detailed tutorial on layer masks and the blending modes you use for shading and highlights :)
Thanks for this. I'm a drawer in my 50s. It's time to grow and learn new technology, and this tutorial is a vital tool for me. Well taught, madam.
I wish there had been this type of help when I was learning digital Art, you do such a fantastic job explaining the ins and outs of this program! and in so many of your other videos Wonderfully done! I hope you have continued success and please take care and be safe out there!
Thank you so much, that means a lot!! ☺
She really showed us that skill triumph over costly softwares😀
Your first ever digital painting is better than most of my current paper (Good) paintings.
And DAMN that painting you were drawing was Over the roof.
I m bad at colouring as well lol
I’ve been wanting to get into digital art but I haven’t been able to find a good program. This is literally the only video that helped thank you
Hiya Jenna, I know this is a few years old now, but this is the best instruction video I've found for Krita. Although there is a few good ones out there, none of them have such a clear way of description and all the little side notes and tips and tricks you talk about along the way are excellent. Thank you for helping an old dog learn new tricks.
even her scribble looks really good... wait how-
Ooo this is super helpful, my photoshop trial just ran out and I can’t afford to pay for the subscription - so I can’t wait to try out Krita!!
I hope in vain this would rise to the top, as it's a subject with a lot of confusion.
I believe that there is an x button on the top right

Aaaahh she has returned!!! Also this will totally improve my art like as a Krita user
Lmao....painting tutorial but we just passed through the painting part..... In the end it was just shading and blending-
My question after watching this video thoroughly..... The first time you "painted" how were you able to color it all inside the line art - like that was fast 😭
It has something to do with selecting only one part of the layer you want to color.
Exactly like bruh. Yet another road block
@@kaistudios5536 how do you do that? :(
@@ivanvillafuerte6241, make more layers using the + button inside a box on the bottom right.

Yesterday I started with Krita and this my searching tour for tips and tricks in UA-cam. Wonderful painting! ❤❤❤
This was really helpful! I've just gotten back into digital art and downloaded Krita and this video helped me get my bearings. Definitely subscribing and I'll be checking out your other videos! :D
Why am I being able to find any of these brushes when I search for them?
yeah, same here... none of them have those names for me
update: settings > manage resources > move default resources to active bundles and hit OK > create new canvas.
you have to use underscores instead of spaces when searching.
truee
Where do these brushes come from? Because I don't have any of the brushes she recommends :(
Here's where to find the brushes: imgur.com/c2GIGmQ If they don't show up for you, try the method at 3:00 and it should display them!
(I hope this helps, please let me know if that doesn't work for you!)
@@JennaDrawing For some reason even when I move Krita 3 to the active bundle it doesn't work. When I close the manage resources again Krita 3 automatically returns to the inactive bundle :(
Oh never mind! I just needed to restart!
This is such a helpful tutorial! I eventually found all your favourite brushes and added them to my favourites. It really helped to see how and when you use all these brushes in your process. Thank you for the subtitles! I used them to make notes.
Dude how, a bunch of them aren’t on my Krita at all 😭
I use mirroring and flipping for difficult brush stroke angles.
Anyone here because clip studio is becoming a subscription platform?

Thanks for your video!
side note I love at the end how you care about us taking care of ourselves.
SELF CARE IS IMPORTANT
I just installed it and I'm freaking out O_O this is my literally first time having a drawing program. with. layers. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I feel you. I am trying to switch to Krita after using firealpaca for a while and I'm panicking lol.
@@shaunapurcell9436 you'll get used to it! i switched to krita after using medibang for a long time and i definitely prefer krita (imo)
in the end its just a drawing program and there's no need to panic, but i do understand why you would panic. just do whatever you did when using firealpaca for the first time- mess around with the tools, the brushes, the settings, and you might find something that you like
if you dont end up liking krita, just hit that uninstall button and use whatever drawing program you're comfortable with
Wow I have Krita and this would very helpful! Thank you!
Ohhh No, You started painting when you were only 12. I am now 25 and still dont know what career options should I choose. Its very depressing. You are really amazing girl
You are not alone my friend. Im 26 this year and im in the same boat.
Your tutorial helps a lot getting into it. Thank You!
For some reason I can't find the stabilizers and all my lines are wobbly so I just moved onto Medibang, but good video!
It's under "tool options"! Top right of the screen, in the window that will have your colour wheel and overview
I got super frustrated about this too
