  • I've been asked this question many times... Do I corner / ride a berm with my pedals level, or outside foot down? There are many UA-cam videos about this subject, but I like to look at the pro's and see how they do it. Let's find out the best cornering technique by watching the PRO MEN rail berms and turns at the UCI Cross Country World Championships! You might be surprised by the outcome... :)
    Keep shredding!

    UA-cam sure has made turning hard " turn your head, turn your elbow, turn your hips, lower your foot!"
    Thank you for showing us what the pros actually do!
    It's pretty simple 👍

      I often say “Less is more” same with looking through the berm… eyes go up, you dont have to turn your head 90 degrees 😄!

    as a student , i feel its a lot easier to learn if i have a fixed goto technique and "keeping things simple " you know like " here are corners ,just do this ."
    but in actuality if you want mastery over any discipline , you have to consider the nuance and adjust to the conditions , but that is so difficult as a beginner.

    I usually ride pedals level. But while it is true you want to keep your weight centered, you actually want to get forward more on your off side. This is something I learned from the fluidride coaching videos.

    Both work, but both don’t work in all corners (berms) as you mention. The one that has the most versatility (efficiency?) is pedals level because you’re positioned to immediate corner exit drive. Pedals are ready to crank where outside down requires a half crank or ratchet back to get corner exit drive.
    Bike body separation is also key on flatter corners and that is harder to achieve with outside down. Clearance on lean angle is always better with outside down, though! Also, off camber terrain takes the outside pedal down choice easily!
    Learn both, use both! The thing about choosing one is you’re limited in options and people can get VERY good, VERY fast even relying on an inferior technique if they practice it enough. Imagine when they swap between the two and speed goes up, corner exit drive goes up, etc…win-win!

      Exactly!! I feel the same about this and teach people both! Thanks for your response, appreciate it.

    One thing that surprised me is how many were almost standing up and way out of the seat going through the berms. I always figured getting lower and having more play with the bike would help, but I like what you said about doing less with your hips and body. Will have to try it out more. I normally do outside down. Gonna go play with it and ride level through some various stuff and see how it feels and compares for me. I can especially see how in tight switchback style back to back berms level pedals helps so you don't have to keep resetting. Thanks for the advice.
    Hope you enjoyed the trip on and off the course.

      Well noticed! With a taller more upright body position, you have more bike and body separation. It’s also less tiring, then squatting deeper into the bike. Give it a try, good luck!

    This is awesome! Nothing like the best in the world to show that both ways have their benefit. You're the best for solving the debate once and for all 😂

    Thanks for this! It is interesting to see the different styles at the pro level. Suspect you are right, that it has a lot to do with the background as a rider has developed...more road influence will push for the outside foot to drop more. I've never thought of it this way before.

      You are welcome! I like to keep an open mind when it comes to teaching skills. As long as you don’t drop your inside foot down im happy :))

    I'm an outside pedal down kind of guy (BMX and DH background...), but next time i'll go to ride on the local trails, i'll try the pedal level technique. If the suspensions works better like this, why not !? Cool video, thanx for the tips !!!

    Anneke, you kinda briefly talked about this during my jump lesson with you and I've really been trying to see which I actually do more and which Im actually faster at. I come from a MX background but oddly seem to use the "outside foot down" technique more than I thought I do. I am getting more comfortable with keeping my pedals level in berms though!

      Hi Garrick! Great to hear you’ve been playing around with it. It takes a little bit of time to see what feels best for every individual. Keep me in the loop on how it goes! Good luck. 🤘

    Great video! I mtb’d for several years and did road riding for a few years, then a 15yr break and now back to mtb’ing and I definitely favor outside foot down now on tight or flat turns.
    My 11yo daughter is doing NICA for the first year and her Team’s Coach has taught level pedals which makes sense but had me wondering if I was doing it “wrong” on some turns.

    Former moto and weighting the outside peg is crucial so in for me in MTB the outside pedal must be down.

      I love watching some of the MX coaches talk about body position and skills. Def understand you have your outside foot down, I love looking at the Moto guys and see how centered they are with the hips, foot placement with heals down and more!

    I'll have to note what I'm doing on mtb - all I know for sure is in BMX I'm pedaling like mad around the big berm turns.

    • @annekebeerten
      @annekebeerten  11 місяців тому

      Yes, bmx riders are on the pedals early coming out of a berm! They also shift between outside foot down and pedals level! 🙌

    I allways try and encourage pedals level, if you get out of shape your in a much better position to react to it, its allso one less thing for riders to do.

  • @Pozitivi
    @Pozitivi 11 місяців тому +2

    For most berms: YES.
    For most open turns : NOT.
    (It depends on if you're want to create more grip and have a better position on the bike) or not...
    thank me later 🏁

    • @annekebeerten
      @annekebeerten  11 місяців тому +1

      Correct me if I am wrong, but that is what I am saying in the long right hand and flat turn... You'll press the outside foot down to get more grip. And it's cool to see that lots of pro's have different styles that works for them.

    • @hopnglo680
      @hopnglo680 11 місяців тому

      If you have support from the berm, level feet is fine. If the corner is flat, you need to drive those tires into the dirt with outside pedal pressure and driving outside knee forward and in…as Anneke already said in the video.

    • @Pozitivi
      @Pozitivi 11 місяців тому

      @@hopnglo680 Yep that's pretty much what you should do.
