How To Mount & Dismount Like A Cyclocross Pro
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- The pros make it look SO easy, gracefully climbing off the bike, and gliding back onto it. But it's a skill that takes many hours of practice to master. Hank is in Fayetteville Arkansas, where he has enlisted the help of Cyclocross Legend Ellen Noble to get him mounting and dismounting like a champion!

Who did it better ? Hank or Ellen !
Both are really good
Hank needs to watch the GCN Tech vid on how to adjust your disc brakes.
fiddling pads out and cleaning rotors at minus 8, sorry you are a mouth hero
sorry fellow i was wrong - comment was shot way too quik. you are absolutely right. Still it is a matter how good one is entertained in order to ignore the squelling
Ellen is fantastic! Future GCN presenter!!
Hank's brake rub. GAAAAHHH!
They are WAY out of adjustment. Need to watch the Monday Morning Alex "How to adjust your disc brakes to stop them from rubbing" show.
Worst thing about watching cyclocross races is the squealing in everyone's brakes at every slowdown point
Probably the best explanatory tutorial video your team has presented. So well stated with a well paced presentation.
Best advice for remounting came from JPOW... Don't drop the bike, push the bike into the ground with your top tube hand. Makes for a solid remount as the bike isn't bouncing around underneath you.
Great overall video. At least Hank survived with the family jewels intact! However, somebody forgot to adjust those brakes or the thru axle was way loose.
“It’s an uphill battle trying to remount downhill” - atta way Ellen! I’ll remember that one. It’s 99% mental and 99% physical is my fav.
It is so satisfieng to hear that your disc brakes are squelling you already made my day
The remounting part is so funny for me to watch because I volunteer a club that mainly focuses on cyclocross skills and racing and we teach this to kids as young as six and seven.
Just love those disc brakes!!
I do wish they had taken five minutes to adjust them. It would have made the audio nicer.
@@joelhenderson3723 Yeah it was like fingernails on a chalk board and all my attention was on that instead of what they were saying
Is this a normal thing in winter, e.g. cold temperatures? I always get it around winter and it's super annoying, now I do a couple hard pumps in the beginning of ride while braking to get it "hot" and get it to stop squeaking - is this what's actually happening=
It's useful for my daily commute and I learned the dismount in less than a day
Hank is mastering his Matt Stephens impression trying to find those pedals!
Ellen has one of the most perfect remounts around.
I've been stuck with a stutter step for 6 years now. The goal is to someday be half as smooth as she is.
For me a big realization was that you don't jump from the side but more from the back. That way your right leg doesn't need to bend up as much. Vanthourenhout really shows this well. He is super efficiënt
Go to a cyclocross camp, that's where I learned how to do it property. (It was, in fact, Ellen's first CX camp as well.)
PLEASE fix Hank's brakes!
Welcome to NWA! So cool to see y’all in Arkansas. Hope you get to do a little MTB and gravel riding as well.
Matt Stephens should have been in this video! Some say he still hasn't clipped in.
Lol🤣
Ellen Noble makes dismounting a bike look, well, very noble!
Clear instructions! I'm gonna try it this coming weekend.
Filmed in my hometown. Enjoyed the Worlds this weekend.
Will be trying this at the weekend at my first CX race!!!!
Fantastic video, thx Ellen & Hank 🙏👌
I had really enjoyed see Ollie do the same as Hank did. Hank has it!
Funny how Ellen made it literally look effortless in both slow motion and normal speed. Hank struggled a bit with "jumping" which sort of isn't required, I found more of a swing motion with my right leg while left if planted. I wonder if Jeremy would weigh in given his vast experience at probably 10,000 of these?? By the way, where is Jeremy?, Fayetteville is in the U.S., JPOW is about as knowledgeable at cyclocross as you can be, and we all love him. Please Jeremy, we miss you and all your examples of how to shred on a Pinarello in the woods.
Ellen is no slouch, she is 2 time U23 US national champion and podiums in Elite US national championships. Also is an excellent elite mountain biker and has run her own skills clinics. Pretty sure Jeremy is backing away from the GCN stuff as he hasn't had a video in over a year and is doing less announcing.
This was fun.
I was taught to bring your right leg inside your left (right handed, facing steps), this way you are in a running pose. Your right hand grabs the seat tube and left hand grabs the top tube.
"Family Heirlooms". Hahaha!
I have an alu cross bike that's maybe a kilo on the heavy side. Shouldering it really hurts though, to the point where it's unbearable to walk or run with. I usually keep my hand between the frame and my shoulder. Is it normal to hurt a bit or does that one kilo make a difference?
Great fantastic video! 👍💪 Love so much the technique how they mount/dismount.
But what's damn wrong with that bicycle? 😵
Just needs a smear of butter on the brake disc.
It's a Trek
I wonder how it feels -8 ❄️. In Malta our coldest temperature is 8 during night time and 13 during day. Soon l will be in the snowy Sicilian mountains 🗻. Do you have any advice how to ride in snowy conditions?
Layer up, and depending on the surface and conditions, you might have to deflate your tires a bit. Baselayer, jersey, and a hard shell jacket should suffice. Neck warmer a must. Maybe mittens instead of gloves and definitely neoprene overshoes.
I’d like to see more videos from the US. Can Hank be your guy in the states? Maybe Hank and Hank’s dad could tour the country?
wish i had a bike like that.
Another tip would be to let the bike “stabilize” once back in the ground before trying to remounting….remounting on a bouncing bike makes it harder
Thanks Hank and Ellen...that takes a lot of practice , with some horrible nad bashing along the way ! Peace
But that squeaking the whole time, lol. Great video. Thanks
Felipe Orts bunny hopped almost all the way to the top 🐇🐇
Really, I'm disappointed there exercise that help you learn it! Simple and easy to start. Happy to help please let me know if you need help with it.
Can do this without clipless pedals but too scared to do it with cleats haha.
Actually the negitive renforcement make the remount the easiest move to learn. If you mess it up more than once you'll likely decide cross isn't for you.
We need an explanation for the break sound
Because disc brakes suck. Hahaha
@@evanrousseau5739 nope, it’s the only choice of peloton now
I wonder, are there any GCN videos that explain how to dress for riding in the cold?
They posted a couple of videos a few weeks ago. Check the channel and you’ll see them.
many many many of them (note Ellen is over dressed to be teaching and not riding much, Hank is better dressed to ride in this one)
Hi guys
Bit of a "tongue and cheek" moment there eh, Hank? :)
If only I had the hip flexibility to get my thigh that high.
For an alternative take, this is the British Cycling training video I use with the juniors I coach: ua-cam.com/video/45GGPfmXNvI/v-deo.html
So all the series is going to have a squeaky bike?
Fayetteville Arkansas???? Of all places…
Any tips how to unclip the left foot before jumping off? I always get worried it won’t unclip and I’ll end up pushing off with the pedal still holding my cleat!
Practice on a trainer!
the less you think about it the better! with MTB cleats they want to twist out naturally so practice dismounting with flat shoes then go to cleats riding slow on grass so any falls are soft
What helped me was to pay attention to doing a really emphatic, deliberate unclip rather than just twisting your foot and sort of sliding off the pedal. Also, make sure you pop out of the left pedal before that right foot touches the ground. Somehow when you get a clean exit from the left pedal, the right pedal naturally ends up in the ideal spot for the re-mount.
I clip in like Matt Stephens.
Don't land on your balls when jumping back on the bike.
lol at all the "adjust hanks brakes" comments, not much they can do as they are SRAM in v cold conditions, they had issues in the past (they recalled a load of brakes)
Switched my SRAM Force calipers to Hope... That fixed it... 😂
Mount, giggidy
What ever happened to Jeremy Powers?
Now do the remount with the penny farthing bike, Hank...
I suspect Hank went full Office Space on the penny farthing after filming that video.
Ok. What's going on with the brake rub. That would annoy the heck out of me if I had that bike.
Seriously🤣🤣 not a single mention of the super tight breaks 🤣🤣
Ellen Noble is a USA CX national champ and can’t get the courtesy of being in the thumbnail photo?
This is why I detest disc brakes.
Pls film a video in india
like a 'pro', i was doing that as a kid, only much faster !
I though CX was cross country??
Thats XC. X = Cross...
CX is cyclocross
XC is cross country MTB
Different sports, although a lot of riders do both disciplines.
Fix those squeaky brakes!
👏👏👏👍👍😂😂🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
so your bike is a little on the loud side buddy..
What’s with the squeaking? Trek tech?
fix your brakes
Those brakes... Yeesh. Nice vid otherwise...
Jezz that bike soundsss terrible!
