Do you agree that this is the best animated trilogy? The second film in the trilogy was just as good! Live on Patreon now: Patreon: www.patreon.com/SebScreen
Well, let's put it this way: When the word "animated" comes up, I'm usually not over-enthusiastic. However, httyd is one of the few movies I've actually baught. (For context, LotR and HP together make up about two thirds of the movies owned by me)
Fun fact: Toothless’ behavior is modeled after cats for the most part. From the playful curiosity to the vertical pupils, he’s just all-around adorable. ☺️
I think he was even modeled after a specific cat belonging to one of the animators. I believe there is footage with side-by-side comparisons for some of it.
This trilogy is really something else. I love Hiccup and Toothless, and their attachment to each other. I also cried watching this film, so don't feel bad Seb.
I have never cried at any TV show, movie etc. Nothing but the 3 movies make me cry so much. Even just listening to the soundtrack I ball my eyes out like no other. There's something special about HTTYD, I don't know what it is.
"How To Train Your Dragon" is DreamWorks crown jewel, glad the people behind it and book author 'Cressida Cowell' were able to bring it to life and grace our screens.
Honestly, there are so many enjoyable things about the movie. Great story, lovable characters, fan favorite voice actors, etc. overall just a masterpiece.
Hiccup has one of the best developments I've ever seen to a animation like this. He was mature from the start, but dependent on his father's approval. The growth in his personality when he finds his own purpose is something really worthy to see.
I will NEVER understand why people think that just becasue a film is animated, they shouldn't cry at emotional moments. Makes absolutely no sense. Live action movies are no more real than animated ones... it's all about the story! If the story is good, it's good, and that's all there is to it.
I'm glad you watched this one. My kids dragged me to see this move, and I sat down in the cinema thinking I'd just have to sit there and wait out the time. Like you do with some of the stuff your kids want to see, but it made me happy and sad and everything in-between. When it came out on DVD it became one of those watch once a year-movies for us. Glad you liked it. Stay awesome.
This trilogy is one of the best out there. The lore and the story and the emotions are all on point. And not Seb saying "you can shoot inside the mouth". That was so hilarious. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love the addition of the lore and many more species added in the episodes, but the movies don't require you to watch them, but I find them still very cool.
This is one of my comfort movies I love the parallels between Hiccup and Toothless Both lost a body part and now complement each other, and the phrase "I look at him and I saw myself" is brilliant
Fun fact: the main theme you hear (for example during the test flight where they had a teeny fall accident) that is actually a combination of both Hiccup's and Toothless' theme songs. Also during the scene where hiccup and Toothless dodge and weave through sea stacks, before that toothless was essentially breaking to slow down with his wings. During that part it was only toothless' theme playing. But as soon as hiccup ditches his cheat sheet and just goes pure instinct, only then did hiccup's theme kick in
With both Astrid and Stoick, Toothless waited for an apology. While he was flying erratically, he wanted Astrid to apologise for threatening to expose them to the rest of the tribe, and when she did he stopped trying to scare her and forgave her. With Stoick, he wanted him to apologise for a) chaining him up and using him to find the nest, and more importantly b) for being horrible to Hiccup and not listening to him, which led to all of this and was what risked Hiccup's life; once he got the apology, only then did he let up and show Stoick that his son was alive, that he saved him.
Well Toothless is part of the Strike class dragons alongside the Skrill and both dragons are known for their blazing speed, viselike jaw strength, and extreme intelligence.
A small detail about why Night Furies have retractable teeth is by fair one of my favorite details. If it wasn't obvious based on how Night Furies have to build up their plasma blasts, they retract their teeth because their own built up blasts are so hot and powerful their teeth would melt if not for their evolutionary traits of retraction.
Best animated trilogy. Ever. Close to king fu panda, but this tops it. The music is amazing. The relationships between everybody, especially hiccup and toothless is amazing. The action sequences are amazing. The flying, relaxing parts are amazing. The part when toothless risks himself just to protect hiccup is amazing. Everything is just amazing.
I really liked this trilogy because Toothless reminded me a lot of my first cat. Black fur green eyes and the same attitude. Great trilogy just like Kung Fu Panda but I'm curious about which one you'll like more. You should say which one you preferred after you finish the final movie because I'm pretty curious lol.
I have a Toothless from build a bear workshop bc we had a black feral cat named Scruffy... he was so scared of everything, but when he finally got close to you he was a love bug! RIP Scruff Muff!
I love how protective Toothless is to Hiccup, like he waited for Astrid and Hiccup's dad to say "Sorry" before calming down like revealing Hiccup in his grasp and fly more calmly
The nose to hand touch is always one of my FAVORITE scenes in any movie… it’s such a small moment of respect that CRAZY powerful… I got chills with that scene…
Fun Fact about this film! Toothless' eye being open after Hiccup trapped him in the ropes (4:54) was actually an animation error. But they thought it looked cooler and fit better, so they kept it in. The hesitation before he let hiccup touch him (12:48, wasn't kept in this yt video) was also an animation error!
man this trilogy is clearly aimed more towards children but i cry like a baby every time i watch them. all three of them. i genuinely wish there were like ten movies.
The series Dragons: Race to the Edge is great too, which I'm pretty sure takes place between 1 and 2? It's also definitely worth the watch if you enjoy the world, world building, characters, culture and style. But yeah, regardless I'm very much looking forward to more Dragon reactions ^-^
Don't forget Dragons: Riders/Defenders of Berk. Those series also took place between 1 and 2 , but immediately after 1 , while RTTE takes place 2 ish years before httyd 2. I don't know why everyone forgets those series because they are arguably better than RTTE in my opinion.
You don't need to have the happiness going. Raw emotion is beautiful. The effect a movie has on a human is so interesting. That shows that the movie is well made.
don't worry about getting emotional, a friend i've known for over a decade who i've only seen cry once and his girlfriend of 3 years has only seen him cry once, but he cries on the 3rd movie🤣
I love all your hilarious random little quips throughout the movie. I enjoy just watching for the reaction alone, but those comments make it an even better experience!
This was the time in the series I remember most having viewing parties with other SU stans, we’d spend the evening theorizing before it aired, and holy shit this episode had us HYPED. I don’t remember if this was part of a “Steven Bomb” (where they’d release a bunch of episodes back to back in between massive hiatuses) but I remember it left us obviously EAGER for the next episode. This show is just amazing, I remember being completely glued to the screen during this entire last season.
This movie has one of my favorite soundtracks. Mainly two of the songs, one when he's taming Toothless, and the other when they 'kidnap" Astrid. Those orchestral swells!
My friend actually was obsessed with this franchise, even making his own dragons that he would put in the movie if he could design some. I even named some. My favorite was the Crawling Doom.
I almost never cry at movies, but I cried at this one, so you're not alone. (Also, I feel duty-bound to suggest to all the good reactors I run across that The Expanse is an amazing show to watch and react to.)
Just watched the movie for the first time yesterday, and I must say it's one of the best animated movies out there! The story, the music, Toothless... can't wait to watch the remaining ones :)

I'm so happy you're watching this series and enjoying it so much so far....but I have an important question. You said you had cats? What are their names?!
remember seeing this in imax 3d, i will tell you seeing the flying sequences in imax 3d compared to the ones from avatar is no contest... How to train your dragon did it better because you felt like you were flying with them! the moment at the end where hiccup reveals his prosthetic leg actually surprised me since i have never seen an animated movie do that with even a minor character. and the music is STELLAR! also remember my mom saying she thought it would be some dumb kid's movie, then after the movie ended she said it was hard to cry in 3d goggles at the parts with stoick disowning and then showing humility to his son. I loved it enough to see it 2 more times in a normal cinema, each time the audience gave applauses at the end of their showings! it really is the best trilogy from dreamworks if not in the top 3 and the first one still holds up among the best ones out there from the studio!
Seeing this is theater was a real treat, it made me bawl my fucking eyes out. The second one especially. Simple concept but so immersive and beautifully done.
The deadly nadder actually has the most traits similar to the Hungarian horntail; similar horn crest on their heads, spikes on their tail, head shape, etc. :)
the youtuber Sideways has a cool video essay about the score for How to Train Your Dragon, about how its opening shows off all the motifs perfectly. It does include some spoilers for the other movies though
The reason why Toothless didn't reveal Hiccup to Stoick immediately is because he was waiting for him to show humility. Like when he was scaring Astrid to death (Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile!), he only stopped when she apologised. Once Stoick knelt and apologised to Toothless, only then did he reveal he saved Hiccup. On the opposite side of things, when Hiccup days things like "I did it!", it blows up in his face!
