Marty, I want to take moment to thank you for teaching my all I know on guitar and for walking me through since the age of 10 (I'm 23 now). I've progressed and my technique has gotten so much better thanks to you. Now, I'm starting to get drawn into playing bass and here we are once again. You're doing so much more than you could possibly imagine. Your student, Lizzie
Marty, You definitely have a gift for teaching. I’m a singer, keyboardist, drummer who is now about to start learning the bass. I’m glad I found your video.
This video actually helped me a lot as someone who’s learning a new instrument especially a rhythm one (I’m a trumpet player normally) this actually really helped me to grip the basics. Now I just need to improve on the muscle and finger control to be able to play faster
When you grasp the bass learning the guitar won't be difficult. I played the trumpet in the school band and picked up the guitar at 16. I'd like to learn the bass and make some music of my own. It's easier just to be your own band.

As a beginner in the literal meaning of the term, not a beginner from another instrument, not a beginner who has learned the basics, but a true beginner, I find it a huge barrier that every bass teacher for beginners chooses songs that are too hard, or that only have an easy riff, but the rest of the song is impossible for a true beginner. Can we please start with a song which is slow and easy from beginning to end? Beginners need enough time to get their hands and fingers in position, figure out muting, play along in time and pick the stirngs properly. That is a ton to keep track of. A song please, that's slow, easy, just quarter notes, beginning to end. Not just riffs, not just intros, but a recognizable song easy enough that you could put a bass in the hands of someone who has never played an instrument, and can play along. I hope you take this to heart Marty .
Thank You Marty for all you do. You are making this 65 yr old a very happy Lady. I laid my Bass down years ago. Hand problems, stopped me from playing. You are helping me bring back the joy of playing. I got a smaller sized Gretsch Bass this past weekend, so far so good. Thanks So much for your very thought out lessons that are making it easy for me to get back in the game. :)
I really want to learn bass guitar, everytime I listen to any band songs I really found bass guitar the coolest sound, I mean I really focus listening to it, and it's so cool when you are on stage playing that with you band mates, so I badly need to learn that.
I accidentally joined a band and I've been interested in playing bass for a while with a tiny background in piano and this is super helpful, thank you!
Picking up the bass :) My brother has played for a while now and he just went to high school (Im in eighth grade) and the middle school needs a bass for jazz band so here I go 😂
Yoooo me too. My older brother loved the guitar and I wanted to try something as well because I've always loved instruments! So i thought i might as well learn the bass, and I'm in eighth grade too!
Holy MAMA! Thank you thank you thank you. Ok, I know I'm a bit excited here, but I have to share why. I'm finally taking time off work, it's just been a HAUL of a few months. Non-stop. I’ve been playing music for 20+ years. Bass was the first string instrument I picked up and just played. I’ve never learned ANYTHING about how to understand what I’m doing. Which, sucks balls. I just bought my first bass. Ever. Thank you. You’re an amazing teacher. I’m loving this video. I’ve looked up a lot of videos and for me, they are all over the place. Like my mind. You gave me HUGE “ah hah!” Moments. I appreciate you, immensely
My uncle died a few years ago. He loved music and he was very good at the bass. His bass' haven't been touched since he died, and my aunt doesn't want to get rid of them. I've been playing guitar for a couple years, and I really wanted to play my uncle's bass. My aunt is letting me borrow them to learn on. Thank you, Marty, for teaching me the basics, so that I can honor my uncle through playing. He would've loved to watch your videos, and learn from you.
I got my first bass 2 days ago and this was the easiest way to learn the notes. Literally thank youuuu!! I was struggling at first but this helped a bunch!
I’ve had a bass for years but have never gotten around to actually learning how to play it. I’m adding this to my favorites so I can use this to learn when I do get to it someday
Brother in law got me a bass and amp for my wedding gift. I cant wait to get home and start learning. He told me check you out, definitely learned something already.
I'm in the process of buying my first bass. I grew up in a musical family but because I was a girl, I wasn't allowed to take drum lessons (which was my first calling). At 35, I'm finally gonna get on the music train. Rush is my biggest influence, and I'm hoping I can play a few songs by the time I'm 40. 😂
So I ended up borrowing my brother's original bass from when he was young. It's a Fender four string...not sure what model exactly. I'll eventually purchase one, but we'll see how this goes.
I've owned a Bass for 3 years now, and I haven't been able to get some lessons in my area, but I've already learned more in the ten minutes I've been watching this video, than in the 3 years I've owned my Bass. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise Marty . I was just about to give it away to someone who would benefit from it, but I have renewed interest in learning to play it. Thanks again, and God Bless you Brother..
As someone whose been playing bass for the past 10 years honestly nothing is more enjoyable than picking it up and playing a famous song or making your very own music.
I have always been curious about bass and electric guitars, never found where to start to learn, until now. Thanks youtube algo, you creep me out, but keep finding shit I'm interested in.
I remember the 1/2 steps as, B to C best chums and E to F and ever friends seems to work for me. I think it works for most stringed instruments and the piano. Thanks Marty 😊👍✌️
This was brilliant! I usually get so impatient with music lessons and end up giving up on an instrument, but I really have my heart set on learning bass and the flow of this lesson was perfect and I’ll definitely be watching your other vids
I'm just beginning to play the bass. I'm 33 and and I'm watching this to learn..I know some basic guitar chords. Will watch your lessons for my bass journey..😊
Yo you're AWESOME. you explain things for an absolute beginner like teaching us WHAT things are like frets or why certain strings or frets make certain noises. Seen a couple other tutorials and they seem to gloss over aspects that might be considered common knowledge but many of us folks have never even picked up an instrument before. Thanks!
Awesome to see you branching out to the Bass side of musical content as well! Being both primarily and Guitarist and Bassist, it does make me ecstatic! Awesome work here!
I'm learning the bass as of today as my second instrument (I was a violin player for around 7 years) I'm so excited:) one of the reasons why I chose bass is because I saw someone say it's like a MASSIVE, backwards (string wise), fretted violin 😭😭
Haha having watched Martys guitar videos as a guitar player myself, now having bought a bass and searching for a how to video and BOOM - my man Mortys at it again :D what a legend
My first 20 minutes trying to learn the bass and I am not disheartened. I love your lesson 1. Perfect amount of info and tips for the first lesson. Thank you Marty!
Thanks a lot Marty, My dad just got me a violin Hofner (Beatle bass) for my birthday, and i’m going to use this video to help me learn, keep up the great work man your making an impact.
As a drummer and keyboard player I have dicked around on guitars for years without ever knowing what I am doing.... and WHAM!! along comes Marty and explains the fretboard and how it corresponds to the notes on my keyboard in the first 5 minutes.... already moving some of my keyboard progressions to the bass/strat !!
this was my actual first bass lesson because i “borrowed” my brother’s bass that he hadnt played in years, tuned it, and grabbed the first video that popped up, now i know the t to under pressure.. thank you
Thank you for making this. I am learning bass and guitar at the same time because i need to make the music that is in my head and got no time for band drama! Not til the album comes out!
Me too! I'm super stoked, I used to be in marching band and played tuba so bass is just my thing lol, never learned to read music, but for me, as long as I know where the notes are and how to get to them, I'm pretty good (at least I was in band almost 10 years ago lol, i hope I can still pull it off)
Came back after 10 years to say thanks for teaching me to play guitar. Now trying bass as an addition. So I came back to marty. Your teaching millions. Many blessings.
I got mine 2020 Christmas and the first video I come to is yours and I like how your teaching so ima keep coming to your channel to learn how to play ❤️
You are the best teacher, they way you got into details. I understand everything you've taught. I don't have a bass guitar yet but I'll get coz I must practice that. Thanks alot man
MARTY I LOVE YOU!!!! COOL BEGINNERS!!!!! I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM NOTHING IN 20 MINUTES!!!!!!!!! You have such a cool beach surfers far out voice too!!!! So easy to listen too you!!!! I love how you gave the tip that traditionally bass is played with the fingers (not the plick!!!!!!!). I don't want to use the plick if this is what you say! I want to be a typical typical bass guitarist. I like lead guitar (but I think playing bass is my root into the musical universe). I'm a lead vocal really, but always felt useless I couldn't play an instrument!!!!!! The bass is my root in. I'm such an instant fan buddy!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!
Man I tell you, the last days and weeks have been unbelievable. Finding all that time between work outs and my own work to practice my music - it has been hard, but it was worth every second of it!!! Thanks again for the video, I found it in just the right moment. Stay strong.
Ive had my bass for a few months now but haven't actually gotten to practice properly, but with this video I was able to understand the notes well. This video is very helpful and I thank you for it
Years ago I watched this channel to help me learn guitar and I recently got a bass guitar for my birthday and now I’m back. So cool… thank you so much for your help!
Thank you so much for the lesson. I'm a drummer and I've been wanting to learn to play Bass for years now. Couldn't find a teacher and I didn't have a Bass guitar. So finally, my son has picked up my drumsticks and has given me a chance to learn the bass. This lesson was beneficial. God bless you.
My papa passed recently, and I have received his 1972 bass guitar, he played it in a band, and I’ve been looking to learn to play the bass, this was very helpful
Thanks for supporting MartyMusic.com! Hope you all enjoy me stretching out my wings a little bit and jumping on the bass train!

Same here. I got my bass two days ago and this video got recommended to me :) the magic of youtube algorithm.

I’ve watched a lot of guitar videos and learned from friends but you made this so clear and simple! Perfect. Thank you.
I’ve had a bass for years but have never gotten around to actually learning how to play it. I’m adding this to my favorites so I can use this to learn when I do get to it someday
I'm an organist but decided to learn bass--- something that has always been on my bucket list. Thanks for this beginner lesson!
Brother in law got me a bass and amp for my wedding gift. I cant wait to get home and start learning. He told me check you out, definitely learned something already.
Very impressive but can you... oops wrong channel

Haha! Funny! Original joke! Haven't seen this a million times!
So what model you bought? Is it a good one. I'm also planning to buy one.
So I ended up borrowing my brother's original bass from when he was young. It's a Fender four string...not sure what model exactly. I'll eventually purchase one, but we'll see how this goes.
I'm so happy for you! Wishing you all the best.
Good luck!
I feel you, with not being allowed to because of being a 'girl'. Aww wishing you all the best!
I’m 51 and trying to lean. You have made it a little easier. Got it a year ago and you make me want to practice more!
Why am I watching this when I don't have a bass?😂
I recommend buying a bass
Buy me bass, i play bass on keyboard😂😂

I don’t even play bass but this helps a lot on identifying notes for me
Welp, time to buy a bass.
As someone whose been playing bass for the past 10 years honestly nothing is more enjoyable than picking it up and playing a famous song or making your very own music.
this is called: i entered a contest to win a bass and now im getting my hopes up
Did you win?

I have always been curious about bass and electric guitars, never found where to start to learn, until now.
Thanks youtube algo, you creep me out, but keep finding shit I'm interested in.
I remember the 1/2 steps as, B to C best chums and E to F and ever friends seems to work for me. I think it works for most stringed instruments and the piano. Thanks Marty 😊👍✌️
Woah thanks, I never thought of that! :)

Very good tip, thanks! I struggled with remembering this previously.
This was brilliant! I usually get so impatient with music lessons and end up giving up on an instrument, but I really have my heart set on learning bass and the flow of this lesson was perfect and I’ll definitely be watching your other vids
I just got my first bass in the mail! I wanted to be able to cover more parts of a song. It's SO BIG!
I'm just beginning to play the bass. I'm 33 and and I'm watching this to learn..I know some basic guitar chords. Will watch your lessons for my bass journey..😊
My father got a bass for a while and i recently found about dave405 sooo... SLAAP

Got my first bass today. I have plenty of music experience but mostly in wind and percussion instruments so this is a new avenue!
Loving your energy. . I have had 3 lessons in 20yrs so a complete beginner. Found this very helpful.
Haha having watched Martys guitar videos as a guitar player myself, now having bought a bass and searching for a how to video and BOOM - my man Mortys at it again :D what a legend
Waiting 37 years for this lesson, I love you my brother! Thank you
My first 20 minutes trying to learn the bass and I am not disheartened. I love your lesson 1. Perfect amount of info and tips for the first lesson. Thank you Marty!
Could you please do more beginner bass lessons, as the one you did helped and made more sense than others i've seen on you tube.🎸🎶👌
Thanks a lot Marty, My dad just got me a violin Hofner (Beatle bass) for my birthday, and i’m going to use this video to help me learn, keep up the great work man your making an impact.
As a drummer and keyboard player I have dicked around on guitars for years without ever knowing what I am doing.... and WHAM!! along comes Marty and explains the fretboard and how it corresponds to the notes on my keyboard in the first 5 minutes.... already moving some of my keyboard progressions to the bass/strat !!
this was my actual first bass lesson because i “borrowed” my brother’s bass that he hadnt played in years, tuned it, and grabbed the first video that popped up, now i know the t to under pressure.. thank you
Bagpipes next, Marty?? Thanks for doing this, bass players deserve much more praise than they get.
Haha. I would love to see Marty do a bagpipes video.
A parallel universe where Marty plays bass
We’re in the Endgame now
Yeh and where Davie504 picks up an electric guitar
Thank you for making this. I am learning bass and guitar at the same time because i need to make the music that is in my head and got no time for band drama! Not til the album comes out!
same
Me too! I'm super stoked, I used to be in marching band and played tuba so bass is just my thing lol, never learned to read music, but for me, as long as I know where the notes are and how to get to them, I'm pretty good (at least I was in band almost 10 years ago lol, i hope I can still pull it off)
i took Bass lessons when i was in high school, many years later i'm buying my first Bass bundle,is never too late to start! follow your dreams!
Holy cow. In 20 min. He teaches more of the basics than so many could do. That's absolutely great for someone starting fron zero like me. Soooo cool!
Marty's face on the cover of this video is an example of a guitarists face when they think about bass!

Never played a bass before, but I’ve been dying to learn. This was a great first lesson. Thanks 🙏
Am a Pianist but at the end of this Lesson I was able to play a few things.
Thank You so much..

I've noodled around on a 6 string acoustic and electric guitar for years but now at 62 and semi retired l need a hobby so bass it is. Thumbs up buddy!
Thanks, this was very helpful as i just got my first bass for Christmas!
Just learnt bass-iscs and am ready.
My brother has actually been trying to learn bass, NOW HE CAN ACTUALLY LEARN IT.
