Beginner here. I bought a bass guitar 3 years ago and tried to teach myself by watching lessons on UA-cam and Fender app. Over time, I eventually lost interest because the instructors were going too fast. I am so pleased to come to this channel as Rich explains it very slow which is great for beginners to understand. Thank you Mr. Rich Brown. You are amazing. Can't wait to go to the next lesson!
One cannot overemphasize how important it is to nail those fundamentals of form right from the beginning: left thumb centered on the back of the neck, even alternating right hand fingers, and fretting right behind the fret - essential for a clean, pure tone. I bow to you, sir.
I'm 70 years old bought my first bass Rich I came across your channel and want to say thank you your laid back demeanor makes it enjoyable to follow thank you so much please keep the videos coming I'm looking forward to the journey ahead
I just bought my 1st bass! I’m an artist and a drummer. I’ve never had a guitar lesson and will be starting sooooon. Ant wait. I’m 73 and want to learn as much as I can before I croak! 🎸🥁😃😁
Hi. I am 64. I play acoustic and electric guitar. Interested in bass to accompany my granddaughter who plays keys. Haven't bought a bass yet. 4 or 5 string??
Hi Rich. I'm in my 57th year of playing bass. You are teaching viewers exactly how to learn and totally absorb lessons. It could not be any easier than what you are demonstrating here. Bless you. 😎
Hey bro I'm 21 and just bought myself a bass after i went thru some emotionally draining times and I felt like i needed to do sth. I went to a uni concert where one of the bands played Today by Smashing Pumpkins and in that moment it just clicked with me that I need to learn the bass as a way to move on from this period if my life. Its a whole new world for me as im a total beginner and your patience and videos as a teacher make me feel welcomed
I am a total beginner, never touched a guitar nor bass. I played trumpet in a brass band for ~ 25 years and try now to make the transition into playing e-bass with 39 y/o and I really appreciate your lessons.
Thanks, Rich. Having recently retired at 70+ years okd, I finally have the time to live my dream of learining to play guitar and bass. Obviously, I''m a rank beginner. Your video is crystal clear and easy to follow. It leaves me inspired to get moving, and I'll be following your lessons from A to Z.
Thank you for this lesson. I am a 67 yr old beginner, and I love your explanations. I taught motorcycle lessons for 25 years and am really impressed with your teaching method.
Thank you for these videos. No fluff, no begging for subscribers right off the bat, no annoying self aggrandizing. Just solid lessons delivered clearly and at a good pace.
I've been playing the bass for about 6 months now. And while I can play full songs and all that jazz, your lessons have been helping me to nail the technique. Like I said in a previous comment, you're the teacher I always wanted. You make the whole art of playing and handling the instrument as stress-free as possible. Proving merit is as it is stressful, the last thing we need is a teacher who stresses us out! Your calm, controlled, friendly yet firm approach works really well. Thank you for making these videos to help us beginners, Sir. 💖🥰🙏
What a lovely compliment. It really does mean a lot to read these very kind words, and it makes me so happy to know these videos have been helping you. All the best, and thank you so much. 🙏🏾❤
I'm not going to look anywhere else. If I learn Bass, you will be the online person responsible. Watched your videos while before buying a bass and was excited to see what you had to offer now that I have one. Thanks for the work you do.
This man is so good. I watched and followed along the first two videos twice, went through them twice more with quite a few pauses for repetition(12mins turned into 30). I came back the next day, half drunk, and legitimately surprised myself. I almost sound like I know what I'm doing. GOATed teacher.
I truly wish the best for everyone who chooses to pick up Bass. It's a fun instrument to begin with, but the difficulty to master makes the journey even more fun like any instrument. I've been playing for 6 years, and it's always a blast. Cheers

After 2-4 hours of searching I found a great teacher, other videos seem to think a beginner has some music experience but this dude is just right for me.
I am 65, self-taught, and I've been playing for 35 years. I will be definitely watching this channel. Maybe I can undo some of my mistakes and get better!
This is by far the best beginners lessons on youtube. You are hitting on all the right points. There are other lessons out there but they seem to go way too fast. Thank you Mr. Brown.
Thank you so much, I purchased a Penney T40 bass many years ago. I am now in my 60 and was looking for a class. You made less one very easy. I will practice this for a few days and come back for lessons 2. I will be sending cash to ur channel as well. Tks Alfred
I wanted to learn bass; so, in 1985 I also bought a Peavey T40 from a pawn shop for $150; complete with the chainsaw case. I never actually learned to play it, 'cause I never put in the time. I hung on to it until 1998, then sold it at another pawn shop for $200. I'm STILL kicking myself every time I go to EBay, and see how much they sell for. I didn't like it 'cause it was too damn heavy.
Newbie here!! Bought my first bass yesterday and I came across your video and I am so glad that I did, the way you explained everything makes so much sense and it's easy to follow along to learn😃 please continue this because I truly want to know all the ends and outs of this amazing instrument.. Thanks Rich!!
Thank you so much, I’m new to playing the base, and your channel. Thank you for keeping it real simple. I try to practice 1hour a day I’ve always been interested in learning the base guitar I just wish I didn’t wait until I was 61 years old but I want to learn so bad. So thank you my friend.
Same here! I'm also 67 and just getting started with my favorite instrument! I have some musical background, and I played acoustic guitar eons ago, but I'm new to the bass. This was a GREAT first lesson! I agree with all the previous comments about what an awesome teacher you are! Your demeanor is exactly what I need and obviously, you've got the talent behind what you are teaching, so I know I'm going to learn alot from you. Thank you so much! I'm looking forward to this whole process and am SUPER excited about being able to play! 🙏
Hello Rich, thanks so much for these complete beginner lessons. I am 71 years old and have never played any kind of instrument but have just purchased a Fender MIM Jazz Base and a Fender Rumble 100 amp. Everything feels so strange to me right now and I know it will for a while. I will be doing this lesson until I can honestly say that I am comfortable doing it, then move to less #2. This lesson makes complete sense to me. Thanks again, and please continue these lessons. Mike J.
Looks like this Is the right Channel for young beginners. I am 60, starting now. I found this video and the way Mr Brown explained quite different from many others and very useful. I will stay around for a while. Thanks Mr Brown, excellent job!
Thanks so much. I'm a brown old beginner. Only 60 years old. I was on my way with rythm Guitar. A couple of weeks. When God told me "Bass!" And I really needed number one lesson from you since I subscribed to your channel. Good job. I'm very happy.
Hey man yesterday for my birthday I got my bass guitar. So I been watching this video to help me start. Thank you my man I will continue to watch your videos. As I continue to learn how to play the bass.
That was great! Nice and simple. I've been playing for a couple months so, I'm making lots of mistakes. Your advice about getting closer to the fret really hit home. I thought I was supposed to press in the middle, I've been killing my fingers in the process.....lol. thank you!
Excellent tuition really calmly delivered and a lot easier to follow than all other teachers I’ve seen on UA-cam ! I’m new to the world of bass playing in London England and look forward to watching all of your tutorial sessions ! Thank you Rich
It's a labour of love. Unfortunately, things have been very busy, and I haven't been able to dedicate as much time as I would like. But messages like these are always greatly appreciated. Thank you!
At 61 years of age this desire to learn to play the bass guitar came out of know where. When listening to songs now, the bass sound is my primary focus. I may pick-up a second hand bass soon and start the process.
Yes there are a lot of great channels but I’ve found I like how you explain things. Got a real aptitude for keeping things just slow enough and easy to understand without falling prey to coming off as condescending.
Rich you are the best! I have looked at a few other sites . But you take it slow, & in teaching Hand & finger placement is so very me. I thank you. You are such a help.
just the comment about being close to the fret cleaning up the buzz/tone... that kind of stuff really helps. i was getting a twaang when i struck the string. see you soon
Rich, thank you for creating this, you give joy to endless people and you are SO warm hearted, and that comes through the screen and straight to us. Be well brother. ❤
Thank you very much for your excellent videos. I've started bass guitar for 1 year, and you've been a great help (especially your relax/take your time attitude giving people like me confidence). As a beginner player, i've come to realize I tend to pull strings too strong, reducing agility. My two cents for beginners like me is : don't play strong, instead turn up the volume and play soft but agile.
I started digging around YT for bass beginners even before I got my bass. I didn’t go too deep with a lot of your videos but just sticking with your beginning series. I really need this. Many thx for your time and pacing it out!!
Hey. I just wanted to say thank you :) I tried to watch dozens of bass guitar tutorials and I always lost attention at some point. Here I watched until the end, everything was super clear and understandable. You have great energy. I'm staying here to learn bass guitar.
Thank you so very much,,a friend gave me a old bass , and your first lesson will be my first lesson, thank you again for helping me get started on what I hope will be a long road
Thank you for your beginner lesson. I’m new as in received my bass yesterday. I saw your channel and thought how cool it would be to play bass which led me to buy one. I didn’t buy a full size, instead I bought a U-bass acoustic/electric so that if all goes well, I can travel with it easily. Love your style/method of teaching and will be watching closely. :)
I enjoyed my lesson last night and am getting reading to practice and then start the second lesson. Been trying to play the base for years and nothing stuck! Even went to Guitar world! But this felt better! Thank you Mr. Brown.
Love your videos Rich. While I'm not a beginner...I would say Im at a advanced beginner ..lol. Good stuff here. Would love to see some really good plucking/fretting exercises that will help build dexterity. Even if its just playing some good scales. Wish I lived near you, would love to have you as my bass teacher.
I thank you so much I loved that rhythm that you created with the exercise that is really helpful because I remember patterns and they stick in my brain better. Thank you 🙏
Thank you! I’m a beginner and I’m a 40 yr old woman who is eager to learn. This has always been a dream of mine 💕 I’m grateful that there’s people like you whom is willing to share what they know to help others as myself! God bless
Mr. Brown...... It's good to see you on the channel today. I for one are always glad to hear your voice as it relates to musicality. Please note that I'm not a pro .... just an enthusiast that is glad to see if my playing makes any since musically. I feel good that the instrument you are using today is the same as mine except fretless...or smooth frets. I've playing for quite a long time for my enjoyment..... nonprofessionally...but for my enjoyment.... I realize that as a pro it's tough to think non pro...But I think your doing a great job. Stay cool..
Wow! Thank you so much. Couldn't find a tutorial that truly addressed being a beginner. I'm so grateful and quite relieved. Feared I would have to give up.
So glad you mentioned the thumb placement of the right hand, my first instructor insisted on me using the floating thumb. Anchoring my thumb on the pickup feels way more natural for me and could play a lot faster.
I'm here because I'm considering getting a bass and have never played before. This to me now looks very realistic because the instructionals are getting better and better. This one is a very good one so I liked and subscribed and will watch more.
thank you i was in a band in the 60's and hmm i'm 74 and visited 2 friends that were in the band i picked up a fender mustang and now lol it's practice time i plan to take you and i for many lessons thanks again
Hey Rich, thank you, good for beginners and it's always good to go back to the A-B-Cs and clean up anything that may be messy in our playing position. Peace and love.
As a guitarist taking on the bass, I just jumped into the middle of it all. But this is a much better place to start so I can more systematically identify what is working and what I still need to adapt. Thanks again, Rich. I'll be following this...
Perfect example: near the end of this video, I was gearing up to make a comment like "yeah, but what about the finger position relative to the fret?" And then you proceed to answer it perfectly. On guitar, I usually try to play lightly about midway between frets and it works fine to avoid excess force too far back or risk of muting too far forward. On bass, I found myself needing to be almost right on the fret, just as you describe. So it's great to get validation that this is something you advise as a pro!
Greetings from London England 🇬🇧. You definitely have the gift of teaching. Ive been checking out your beginner videos, and they are clear and concise. I play acoustic guitar in a church, mostly Ccm and hymn / choruses. We've loads of guitarists but no bass player. I've decided to learn the bass for 2 reasons: Firstly, I've always loved the sound. Secondly, to fill in the position later. No one knows (except those reading this) so I won't feel pressured in my new journey 😊
This is a great help for me. I learned yesterday but had a horrible time holding the instrument and my hands were killing me. I am a piano player but wanted to try something new.
I also learned to play with just my 1 finger over 30 years ago. My playing speed was severely hindered for many years! I had to force myself to use 2 fingers until it became second nature. Great to hear others who had the same experience!
Rich, I started playing bass in an original rock band by default because we had three guitar players and I was the least proficient. I only played rhythm guitar. I was unfamiliar with bass and had no idea of the purpose of bass or how it should be played as part of rhythm section and drum lock in. As I studied simultaneously with writing our songs, I slowly picked up the whys and wherefores of bass. I did take professional lessons from a Berklee graduate who knew what I was doing and said I should stop the sheet music, standard notation reading and just get proficient on my skills. He would sit there and write the sheet music for my original demos (right as I sat there!) and then query me on how I would approach my bass lines. He was a great teacher. He always reassured me. Your craft is of equal importance and I’m sure to follow you.

I appreciate this lesson. Fundamentals are so overlooked! Thank you!!!
God bless
I’m turning 40 in June and I’m going to purchase my bass soon to start learning 😊
Your username is perfect!
Thank you, Rich. Excellent presentation of critical techniques of playing and staying healthy doing so.
Mr. Stay cool..
Thank you
Wow! Thank you so much. Couldn't find a tutorial that truly addressed being a beginner. I'm so grateful and quite relieved. Feared I would have to give up.
recently started to relearn bass left-handed as its comfier, your videos are so helpful especially to renew knowledge into the opposite hands 🙏🙏
So glad you mentioned the thumb placement of the right hand, my first instructor insisted on me using the floating thumb. Anchoring my thumb on the pickup feels way more natural for me and could play a lot faster.
It's the same for me. I'd love to be using the FT technique. The anchor is just better for me. Thank you for watching!
I'm here because I'm considering getting a bass and have never played before.
This to me now looks very realistic because the instructionals are getting better and better.
This one is a very good one so I liked and subscribed and will watch more.
I'll be getting my j bass tomorrow. It will make a great addition to my upright! Thanks for the video!
thank you i was in a band in the 60's and hmm i'm 74 and visited 2 friends that were in the band i picked up a fender mustang and now lol it's practice time i plan to take you and i for many lessons thanks again
Thank you so much. As a total beginner your videos work great for me. Dankeschön and Greeting from Germany.
Yeah thank you for the left hand the thumb and the finger positioning for the fretz I'll try it
Hey Rich, thank you, good for beginners and it's always good to go back to the A-B-Cs and clean up anything that may be messy in our playing position. Peace and love.
My pleasure, Phil. Thanks as always for watching!
Thank you for this vid!! The second finger exercise helps so much. Your vids are the best!
Thank you so much for watching. I'm so glad this video has helped! 🙏🏾❤
You've got a new subscriber 🎉
This is a great help for me. I learned yesterday but had a horrible time holding the instrument and my hands were killing me. I am a piano player but wanted to try something new.
Thank you, Mr. Brown, for this video. Everything about it was simply great.
This is really good advice! Thank you for your explanation of the small things that often get left out for beginners.
I’m buying my first bass soon and I’m so glad I’ve found this! Exciteddddd!
Thanks Rich. Subbed. Can’t wait to watch your videos. Age 48 just started my bass journey:)
WOW.....this is so good. I just may get a bass and follow!
