A lot of guys on the internet know how to play bass very well but can't teach. This guy is the best I've seen in terms of teaching the bass for beginners.
Never played bass guitar before I I'm getting older. I've got a lot of free time. I want to learn how to play this instrument. I'm gonna give it a shot. Let's see if you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I'm gonna give it a year. I should learn something by then. Just bought me a used bass guitar wish me luck
@joetorre846 good luck mate hope you love it. If you don't mind me asking, what bass did you get?
@bedroxzbass4706 I bought a AUSTIN BASS GUITAR SOMETHING CHEAP JUST TO LEARN ON
@@joetorre846how’s it going with your bass?
Thank you for sharing!! Great teacher
I Am 71 years old , and I bought a bass today. Thank you for your wonderful work.
Congratulations Sam!! A new bass is an inspiring thing.
This is the clearest, most concise and enjoyable bass tutorial I have ever watched. Most bassists don't seem to understand the simple fact that guitar players, in particular, don't see the fret board the same way. Thanks, Steve!
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate you watching.
Your teaching is very detail, tnx
Tnx Steve ur a good teacher on the basics and so clear
You're welcome!
I agree man ty so much Steve.
This bloke is bloody good teacher. I paid for about 2 classes but this bloke is spot on. And the good thing it's free. This bloke is a bloody legend
Not even 5 mins into this video and I’m already moving so much smoother on my axe. 10/10 video dude love how simple you made it seem!
That's great brother. Glad the video helped.
My god finally someone who knows how to simplify things. I just learned/understand 1000% more than I knew before I watched this!!!
Glad to hear it helped!
@@stevekonbass It certainly did. Thank you sir!!
A friend will receive this video as he wants to learn to play the Bass. Thank you for the clear and simple beginner steps offered.
Thanks for passing it along William.
Wow that really helped a lot 👍
Wow - my mind is blown. That first lesson was laid out so clear and clean with zero fluff and such straightforwardness! I love your teaching style! I am so glad I came across your video. Thank you for sharing it on youtube. I am super excited to practice again!
Glad to hear you're motivated to practice! That leads to improvement.
This made five years of learning bass make sense in 30 minutes.
Great to hear that!
FINALLY!!!! A teacher that teaches you exactly what you need to know immediately. My goodness!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I've watched, read, and listened to so many people trying to explain what you explained in this video - for years and years and years. I never understood what it was they were saying until you spelled things out in this extremely informative video. I feel like I FINALLY understand some basics of guitar that I never thought I ever would. Thank you!! Really. Thank you :)
That is awesome to hear Alary. Thanks for letting me know. Very glad the video was a help to you.
Exactly!
Same here!❤
Right? Guitar players start spouting chord names at you, and you're like HUH? They are terrible at explaining what this video explains.
You'll have fun with the chords video I did. Once you start playing chords a whole new world of creativity will open up for you on bass: ua-cam.com/video/1mK1wTjnFjA/v-deo.html
At last someone who can take the time to explain 'how to' in simple language and diagrams . I can't wait to get tuned up and playing my first bass guitar. Thanks Steve, keep up the good work.
You are welcome!
This is one of the clearer videos on youtube. I appreciate how it's just the lecture and no bullshit.
I learned more from this 30 minute video than I've learned from a year of trying to figure it all out. Thank you SO much!!
You're welcome. Glad to hear it helped.
Been playing what I refer to as very "basic" bass since 1979. Never really go much better. 7 minutes into this video and I already know more than I did before I began watching. This is great stuff.
Excellent communicator + Clear example = Great Instructor
Great to hear that Gary, thanks.
I don't know English very well, I am from Ukraine, but thanks to the fact that you write everything on the board, I understood everything. Your lessons are great. Thank you very much.
Your English looks good to me. Glad the lesson was a help. "Hello Ukraine!" Stay safe and the best in the New Year.
I'm going to repeat what everyone is saying but this is by far one of the best beginner bass overviews I have ever watched. I have had a bass for a long time, with no time. Decided to pick it up after 15 years or more and get alittle more serious. This video definitely helped alot. Thank you.
Glad to hear that. Keep playin'.
As a piano player since childhood (for leisure), having now just started trying to learn to play bass I knew the chord/triads music theory, even the chord progressions (which surprised me, since it has been YEARS since I actively studied this stuff!) - this video was super-helpful in transitioning that understanding to the bass fretboard, as well as being a useful reminder of the basics of music theory. Great stuff, Steve, thanks!!!
You're welcome! Hope you enjoy playing bass.
@@stevekonbasshow can i avail the book which you mentioned?
That book was just blank and my teacher would write in the lesson we did each week.
I'm on day 3 of learning bass for the first time ever, my mind is blown by how well I actually understood this, you worded everything so well and you broke it down in such an easy to grasp way. I am truly thankful for this video, thank you!
Awesome! I'm glad I presented it in a way that made sense to you. Hope you enjoy playing!
Couldn't say it better myself!!! 👍👍👍
You're lucky to have discovered this so quickly!!

My comment exactly, perfect timing ,start fresh with NO BAD HOBBITS, 😄
And to have it explained,,and not just recited,,.
To be able to understand from the beginning..
Stay with it.
The clearest musical lesson EVER. I love it.
PS, you earned another subscriber.
Glad to have you!
Great to hear that. Thanks!
The comments I've read say it all. I've been trying to come to grips with the bass. In 30 minutes you have unlocked many of my stumbling blocks.THANK YOU
That's great to hear Warren!
Very good I love your lessons
Thanks Theodore.
This channel has enabled me to play bass in just a month, whenever I feel I don't understand something...I just come back here.thanks man you made it easy
Awesome to hear James! Keep it up!
For stating the obvious one more time: this is the best beginners lesson I´ve seen. As a complete beginner, I thank you for the enlightenment.
Thanks Aurora, I appreciate it. It's great to hear from people that are picking up the bass and starting to learn. Thanks for watching and please share the video.
First time watching any bass lesson,it was fantastic
Thanks Walter!
All bass players are grateful.Thank you mr Steve!
I'm grateful that they are watching. Thanks!
you are so great teacher I like your style, next day i start playing the Bass Guitar because of you, thank you so much
Hey that's great Gabi. Have fun with your journey!
I've gain much clarity on cord progressions. So much helpful.👍👍🇸🇧🇸🇧🇸🇧
Great to hear Amalyn! If interested in another lesson on chords, I posted a new one: ua-cam.com/video/1mK1wTjnFjA/v-deo.html
I grew up with violing, cello, then bass, playing classic or Orchestra music, so by the time I got into jazz & rock music, all I knew was basic note-playing, and improvisation or solos were never done, until I tried out for the 'famous' Ohio U. Jazz band. I quit music to concentrate on my double-major, but I still have my guitars.
As a beginner I’ve watched thousands of bass training videos, but none are as straight forward and simply put as this. Thanks for making my life a little easier!
Glad to hear it and glad to hear so many people are taking up bass.
Same to me... All i know is 2 string open E n open A note... But for thirt string i never know how to use it😅
Steve,
51 years old and have struggled with learning music on guitar & bass for several years. You just nailed understanding all the information.
Best teaching I have ever experienced sir. Thank you Brother!!!
That's great to hear James! Glad I could help.
I'm 59, "comming back" (never been a great bassist) trying to get a few grooves before I check out... this man knows how to teach... (hey I'm a teacher too) 😋Keep at it! "Will buy coffee soon"...
Same here, only that I am 57 yers old. I play also drums, which is my main instrument. Greetings from Finland. And Thank you Steve very very much.
You're welcome Janne and "Hello Finland!"
Holy crap after years of playing I finally find a lesson that teaches me the "why" of what I'm doing. I remember back when I was first starting off, my teacher would just have me memorize everything without actually explaining it in a way I could actually understand what is going on.
So I have been trying to play bass for last 15 years.. I only wish someone would've shown me this when I started.. I can't believe it was this simple and effective 👏🏻 thank you so much!!
You are welcome! It's great to hear the lesson helped. Here is the playlist for all the lessons: ua-cam.com/play/PLsFosTB39eVBVllLkZP_RAIjNmviv8nYe.html Even if you don't go in depth with them and just casually watch, there will be times when you have that Ah Ha moment and realize how easy some things are. Happy playing!
@stevekonbass oh, I'm definitely going through all of them. If only this first lesson did so much impact, I can only imagine what the rest of them can do. I'm super stocked to learn more! Thank you so much.
This is the best instructor I have ever come across when it comes bass guitar lessons. Thanks Steve
Thank you!
There are lots of guys know how to play bass, but teaching without boring is equal to being expert. You are doing it well Steve. Thanks a lot.
Thank you!
Prob only guy who makes actual sense
Great teaching Steve. Have played strats for over 54 years, am 68 now, an old schoolfriend here in the UK has just picked up his first ever guitar - a Squier bass. I'm putting together some lesson plans for him, your video(s) are the only lessons I've found that hack it. Your students are lucky folks! Big thanks from out here.😊
Thank you!!
This video is a game changer. It packs so much into a short, concise, clear package but it doesn’t move too fast or jump around. Amazing work Steve. Thank you for this!!
Ah, thanks for the comment Paul. Glad the lesson was a help.
Thanks for explaining this "fundamental basic stuff"! Now I start to connect the dots.
I think this is the best video I've seen explaining this stuff.
Thank you! Glad the video shed some light on theory for you.
I agree. He is so organized in his explanation.
Exactly! I needed to see how to connect the dots. Now, I feel like I'm getting somewhere.
I too agree as an absolute beginner I have learned a lot from his tutorials very simple and easy to follow.
this is very clear, some people can play a little but the basic foundations to get you thinking and writing is not there to get serious, you have open the door to achieve this brilliantly.
Great to hear. Happy playing and writing!
You are just the best teacher. I almost gave up learning the bass but am lucky i came across you. Great job
From Kenya
I'm glad you found the video Mark and glad to hear it was helpful. Please share it with your musician friends. Keep rockin'!
This is great. You’re a natural teacher. Thank you.
You're welcome!
This is the best base guitar teacher I have ever seen or heard. He simplifies it so well that anyone will learn from him lessons. I played bass guitar for over 10 years in live bands, and I have taught a few friends, but I could never explain it so well.
very clear and pragmatic, I loved that you use the white board. thank you very much!
No nonsense no ego meat and potatoes lessons. So much valuable information clear and concise. All teachers could learn from Steve how to pass this vital information down.
This is what you call a proper bass lesson. No long intros, or sponsored by.... In fairness I am going to have to watch this a number of times before it sinks in, but the format is conducive to that, as you can skip using the whiteboard as a reference. Thanks for sharing.
Gland to find teacher like you steve really appreciate your work 😄😇
Thanks, and thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thise parent is the best teacher I've ever seen , for the two years of learning he's the best
Thank you Murasanyi.
Now that's a good teacher - laid it our beautifully!
Great lesson, I can already tell learning more about playing bass will enhance playing 6string and working with triads. Thank you.
Great lesson. Been playing by ears for years. You made that so simple.
First 8 minutes have cleared up my understanding of the fretboard and I've been dabbling with guitar and bass for nearly 40 years!
Just watched this video.. probably the best instructor I've seen this far. Even an old country boy can understand it now. Thanks. I'll be watching the rest of them now.
Thanks for watching and glad you liked the video.
I’m a long time player, but just wanted to say how much I love your lesson. You will encourage so many people to play, excellent job man. I was expecting another one of these self-impressed A-holes that give our chosen weapon a bad name, but damn, thank you, I’m blown away.
I appreciate that brother, really. I'm enjoying it as much as the gigging I've done.
😅😅😅w🎉🎉upigyy🎉i
Thank you Mr. Steve. I started out on bass in the 70s and only played by ear. I’m coming out of retirement and this class was so perfectly explained that my INTP personality with ADHD and OCD understood and stayed throughout your whole explanation. I’m a new fan.
You're welcome Michael. Glad to hear you stuck around for the whole video.
Took 30 minutes to breakdown what took ten years to fully grasp, simplicity is simple to understand when simply explained, thx coach !
You're welcome.
I'm new to bass. Been playing guitar for years.. Great lessons probably one of the best videos. I came across so far.
Great lesson ! I've been noodling around for 2 years . I'm 62 and just found you made sense of what ive been struggling with . thank you !
You're welcome Chris. Glad to help.
This lesson was so well done because Steve explained everything step by step!
For people just starting out this is a great teacher
fantastic lesson. This is not easy stuff for beginners, you made it easy with your clear explanations.
This is where Steve shines!!! Making it all seem easier.
I know/ known this stuff . Somehow , it's part of me . But wow ... It's a whole other world when it is explained like this . My point : stick to the basics . It will make the other stuff easyer to understand .
You're a legend. After so long trying to understand how the bass work, I finally understand. So glad Ive found your lesson.
Glad to hear it! Thanks Jaco.
Thank you for this lesson!!!!!
Nice video. Thank you for taking the time to explain. 👍🏼
I have been playing bass for about 5 years and this lesson is by very far the best I have had. Outstanding!!
It's great to hear that Marc. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Glad to hear the video was useful for you.
Steve's classes are in a league of their own. I like the way that in a mere 30 minutes goes from tuning to notes on the fret to patterns. Then unto chords on the guitar in relation to playing along with the bass to how to play chord progression, all in a nursery style way. I have learnt even the musical language of 145. He is the real Macoy.
Excellent intro to bass guitar! Thanks, Steve!
Thanks for watching.
This has filled in so many holes in my knowledge or spots where things didn’t quite add up. Man I’m mind blown. Awesome info. Plan on watching thru a couple more times to make sure I got everything.
You are a great teacher, this lesson is so simple. I took up the bass guitar and after this lesson, I was able to have an idea on how to play👌👏👏👏
That's great!

I used to play piano just started with bass and have no clue. To me this is the irreplaceable one and only video a bass beginner should not miss.
I predict you'll pick up bass quick being you played piano. Hope you enjoy the journey. Thanks for the comment.
Total beginner here... picked up a Bass guitar for the first time one week ago. Been watching multiple videos with different approaches. Although it would be great to pick up an instrument and start playing songs, i'm the type, in everything i do, that i need to know the 'why' behind it all. Your video did just that for me! It makes sense now! Thanks!! You just got a new subscriber!!
Yes, the "why" is important. Glad you caught that. There's a value to learning how to play songs, but if that's all somebody does they're just playing somebody elses notes and missing out on the bigger picture.
@@stevekonbass This is why your such a great teacher. You are teaching from the Broad View.
Thank you!!
Steve, amazing to find you on here. Joe Anikewich Drummer here been over 25 years. Great to see you educating young bass players. Glad I found your video on here. God Bless
Joe! How have you been? Still playing drums? I see you do trumpet now. Glenn Gray's version of I Can't Get Started is one of my favorite tunes. Great trumpet in that. Thank you Steve! I have been searching online bass tutorials for months, this one rocks. It's amazing, in only 30 minutes, all the basics to get you started. And you present everything so clearly.
Glad it helped Joe. Enjoy the journey.
Thank you, everything is available told and shown
Amazing, jumpstarts my playing!
Man, this is good stuff. I've read a few books, some of them really good ones, and I have the basics of what's covered here, but this half hour video could have saved me a lot of time.
I've been playing for 30 years and I never had training. I knew about which notes were which, but you opened my eyes with the other stuff. I finally understand what I've been missing all these years, Thank you very much and subscribed. No one explains it as well as you do.
Thank you. Glad I could shed some light on the theory stuff.
Oh man, this is so good! Basics and employment and no faff!

I’ve learnt so much. Thank you! You explain everything perfectly, and everything is starting to make sense.
Glad to hear the video was helpful Maria-Anne!
Oh my God you are a life saver. I have the passion for the guitar but sadly I have no income high enough to get a teacher. I have searched the entire UA-cam for a person who can simply the guitar for me to understand and you have done exactly well. Please keep posting more of this beginners stuff. Even the highest guitarist will still need it. Nice job
Glad I could help ya Bate.
Finally someone know to really simplify and make me perfectly understand
BEST explanation ever
Steve, Thank you man. I bought my first bass guitar 6 months ago at age 55 and have bought "teach yourself " books enrolled in online lessons and tried my best to understand it all and got basically nowhere. 20 minutes with you dude and the lightbulb above my head lit up. I can't begin to express how grateful I am. I really believe that I can do this now
That is awesome! Stay with it and it will come. And if you get stuck and need some 1 on 1 lessons I offer them via Zoom. Keep playin' brother. All the best.
@@stevekonbass Thanks man I'm just spending time working my way through what I've learned from your first lesson. Taking it slow just now until I get it down and then start to increase the speed. I really feel like I'm actually making progress. Thankyou so much man
That's awesome! It's important to practice every day, especially as a beginner. Stay consistent, this way the knowledge stays in your head and your hands stay used to these new movements. If you don't pick up the bass for a few days you'll probably find you took a step back. Consistency is the key.
@@stevekonbass that's so true I try do at least an hour or so every day just trying to get the muscle memory so my fingers just do it. I'm struggling a bit with coordinating my plucking fingers but I know I'll get there If I keep at it. Thanks for your replys Steve I do appreciate it.
Thanks for going to the point and making it so clear, best wishes!
Thanks, you too!
Perfect. Thanks for sharing 🎶🤙🏽🌺
thanks Steve, exactly what I need right now, just that I got a 6 string bass but you have give me the right direction, thanks man, very well explained, I am going to practice now.
Glad the video was a help brother. Good luck with the new ax.
Dude, thank you so much for this. I was looking everywhere for someone to explain this for me, and every video I've seen no one lays it out like you did. Everyone seems to think we just know it somehow without being taught the basics, like why the pattern is what it is for example among other basics things that you show so well. I was so pumped up I forced our entire band to sit down all day yesterday and we just went over majors, it was a back-to-basics-day. That was all we did. We hated each other half way through but when we went home everyone agreed it was worth it. Rock on!
That's awesome brother! When the band all tows the line together you'll get further.
