    • @garywall1572
      @garywall1572 2 роки тому

      Sorry wrong button duh!! Can I please ask how you mute your strings? You play with your left hand like a guitarist ie you seem to spider walk your fingers whereas many others have their fingers flatter on the frets and I can't see you muting with your right hand. I'm guessing your years of experience shows your effortless muting. Would it possible to explain your way. Sorry to sound like an idiot but muting is becoming my nightmare. Kind regards Gary.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Gary-
      It can be tricky for beginners to figure out muting, but once you get it, it'll become second nature. Both hands take part in muting. Most passive ringing of strings comes when you're playing the D or G string and the A or E will ring. When I'm playing on the D or G, my ring finger on my right had rests on the E string and mutes it. Also, as you alternate index and middle fingers on your right hand as you play, they fall in a way that will control the open strings. Play really slow and examine how your fingers fall and you can see the mechanics.

Play that scale forward and backward in time and clean. Alternate index middle on your plucking hand. That'll get you going. I have looked at dozens of tutorials here on UA-cam, and this is by far and away the best one out there. You go slow, and I love the diagrams and explanations.. Plus you don't waste a lot of time trying to "prove" how good of a player you are! I have played guitar and ukulele plus a bunch of other instruments since I was a kid, but never even touched a bass until a couple of days ago. I think I now have a working knowledge of how to play it, and the theory, which no one has ever been able to explain to me before. So that was good too. I am 74, and am looking forward to getting my own bass which is on order. My main interest is in just providing a simple back-up for the ukulele group, and maybe sometimes for a gospel group I play in as well. So now to learn some simple accompaniments to use as a background and to help keep everyone on time.
    Thanks again so much! I learned a lot watching your video! The best out there!

      That's awesome! It's important to practice every day, especially as a beginner. Stay consistent, this way the knowledge stays in your head and your hands stay used to these new movements. If you don't pick up the bass for a few days you'll probably find you took a step back. Consistency is the key.

    I grew up with violing, cello, then bass, playing classic or Orchestra music, so by the time I got into jazz & rock music, all I knew was basic note-playing, and improvisation or solos were never done, until I tried out for the 'famous' Ohio U. Jazz band. I quit music to concentrate on my double-major, but I still have my guitars.

    Hey Steve, I've been playing bass for a long time off and on since my senior year in high school (I know I started late) and have been successful learning by ear in a gospel church and then years in a popular funk band here in CT. I have been embarrassed to tell people I didn't know music theory or my bass neck but my ear always bought me through!
    I have to admit, this lesson was truly a blessing for me. Knowing where you are on your neck and how the notes relate really takes the mystery and unsure feelings out of playing.
    Your a fantastic teacher and thoughtful to the process.

      Truly glad I can help David. Never be embarrassed brother to ask a question. Most, if not all, musicians I've played with in my lifetime are down to Earth and ready to share their knowledge. Most of us are ear players, (Paul McCartney and Eddie Van Halen have said they play by ear) but the theory helps in navigation of the bass and understanding what everyone else in the band is doing. No matter what the age or experience, there's always stuff to learn. The second lesson where I talk about playing in minor might help you too.
