  • Day 5 in Amsterdam! aka, the 5th night of staying in Hostel. For the most part it's pretty great. At such an affordable price, it makes traveling feel guilt free.
    TRAVEL INFORMATION ABOUT MY TRIP:
    I'm currently traveling in Europe for 2 weeks. I am stopping in The Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway. In this vlog I stayed in the Generator Amsterdam Hostel. Interested in staying there? Check it out here: goo.gl/NbmemC
    To get $25 off your book on booking.com use this link: www.booking.co...
    (you get $25 off, I get $25 off)
    For transportation within the city:
    Uber code MonicaC41 (you get $10 off I think?)
    Also, look up the public transportation in your city.
    WHERE I WENT IN THIS VLOG:
    1. Generator Hostel Amsterdam Cafe
    2. Raw Food Cafe Amsterdam
    3. Amsterdam Ferry across the river IJ (free, by centraal station!)
    4. A'DAM Look out
    5. Lovers Pizza Canal Cruise
    Also the Hostel I am staying in is very clean, and decorate in a trendy and modern fashion. The trouble with Hostels is that you are sharing rooms with random strangers. Everyone is really respectful and quiet, but everyone also has their different schedules of waking up and going to sleep! Which is probably the most difficult part. My roommate kept her light on til 2 AM every night and at first I looked past it, but I started to become frustrated with this habit of hers as it affected my sleep.

    I think if it was her own personal little light, that's fine. If it was the main room light, hell no. But you're right, always have an eye mask with you in a hostel! It's easy to get frustrated when you're staying in the same room as complete strangers who have different cultural values but it's all about compromise :)

      definitely a tricky situation! But eye mask is probs always a good idea.

    You need a power converter instead of an adapter for the plug 😬 that's why you keep blowing a fuse. Not the same wattage that phones, computers, etc use.

    Hostels are a great alternative to hotels and more cost effective, but definitely can come with some downfalls and tricky situations. Especially when it's all different people from different cultures. Hope you've loved your time in Amsterdam despite the unfortunate hostel situation!

    Depends on how big this light was. Was it like a little reading light? I think that's fine. If it was bright and kind of illuminated the whole room I think she should have gone to the common area instead.

    While I don't think it's cool for the room mate to leave her light on so late, I think next time you should buy an eyemask and/or earplugs.
    I spent a few weeks backpacking around Europe this summer and brought an eyemask and a good pair of earplugs in order to avoid this issue. Definitely worth a money because you never know who you'll be rooming with :)

    Hey I'm very behind on these videos because I have been so busy with school recently. But, I think a really cool video idea I thought of while watching this would be like "Things I Learned in Amsterdam/Europe" and you could talk about whatever you want, whether it actually pertains to the place or just something you realized. Because traveling often comes with new discoveries and realizations and I just think that might be cool! Love your videos, you are so talented!!

    Hostel life cannot be compared to college in every aspect.
    Keeping your personal light on in hostels is absolutely normal (not the dorm light ofcourse!)
    In College you live with one person for a long period of time, whilst in hostels people are changing from now to then. It's always best to take a sleeping mask with you 🙆
    There are far worse things that could have happened🙈🙋
    Love your vlogs! Best and most unique channel on here 💕

    I'm a kinda go with the flow type person. If everyone is up and awake, no problem. But when people are trying to sleep, LIGHTS OUT!

  • @heavythinker16
    @heavythinker16 6 років тому

    I think it depends on the type of person. I'm the type of person who uses the shower curtain to keep water from flooding the whole bathroom and I used to think that's just common courtesy but apparently, a friend of mine thought it's not a big deal and she thought it was outrageous of me to be annoyed when people leave the whole bathroom wet. I think that just shows how different people have different definitions of being nice and rude.

  • @Lauren-bs5yn
    @Lauren-bs5yn 6 років тому +2

    I think it depends on how big the light is. If it's a reading light that clips onto the book then it wouldn't be that bright anyway. If it's a lamp, however, she should be courteous and turn it off at a certain hour. Either way, sleep masks are the way to go!

  • @misslittledormouse
    @misslittledormouse 6 років тому +11

    rude. if she needed light for whatever reason, there are common areas in every hostel.She can use that space and don't bother anyone.

It was awesome because we were standing in like the front row next to someone that went to high school with him and then he did an encore of this song! It was amazing! While I was watching this part I didn't realise but I was singing.....Very loudly... in public....

  • @707Bubby
    @707Bubby 6 років тому +6

    I think it is kind of rude. To me though it depends on how bright it is, like if its like the light coming from a laptop then I think thats fine, because just because everyone else wants to sleep doesnt mean they have to dictate when everyone sleeps even if its late. So if someone is bothered by that type of light (the light created by a laptop or similar range), then to me that is on them to have a sleep mask if they need complete darkness. But if it is a light that is actually illuminating the room then that is rude, and people should be more conscious to go somewhere else.

      Lol yeah lights on is nothing in a hostel. I stayed in a kind of dirty and sketchy hostel in Paris (it was all I could afford at the time) and there was a man in my 8-person dorm room who had been traveling across the country by bike. Mind you, this is France in early April so it was literally raining every day. He laid out all of his sweaty wet clothes, including his socks, on all of the radiators. When I got back to the room after going out to the bars for a little, the entire place smelled like a sweaty warm gym locker room. It was also such a skechy place and the lockers were too small for my bag so I locked up all of my money and valuables and slept with my backpack on the front of my body. Definitely one of the worst hostel experiences I've ever had.

    I feel like it's not necessarily pressure when traveling. I know my sister packs her days on trips, and sometimes it's just excitement to see and do everything you wanted to do. Maybe with some people it's too much pressure and they just want to relax, but that's not necessarily true for everyone.

    I remember my stay in a hostel in Seville about 5 years ago and I woke up at 7 am to these two German ladies like 27 years old, screaming and pounding the bathroom door. When I asked "What the hell is going on? " they started WHINING to me like I was their mother about the italian guy who had been in the bathroom for 20 minutes already and how he's being so rude and stuff. I was like, "you bitches need to stfu and realize how minuscule this is. Its frustrating, but not worth screaming about."
    It took me so long to get out of that bad mood after that and overtime I came back to the room the three of them were yelling at each other. I think they got kicked out one afternoon because I was gone for an hour not during normal check out time and all three beds had been remade and everyones stuff was gone. But holy hell, THAT was the worst hostel roommate experience.
    I find the true "horrible hostel roommates" are the ones that don't talk to you and just stay super quiet. Like we are all young people traveling fairly broke. Tell me you don't have some stories or advice you want to share or questions you want to ask. All my best memories are with people I met in the hostel dorms. I was traveling on my own though too so I think it help push me out of my shell.

    in hostels, as a general rule i give people till midnight or so to do to have the main lights on/ talk loudly. any later than that and i just ask them if i can turn it off/ to shutup. i haven't had anyone give me sass about it yet :-)
    you can't really control what people do in the mornings though. the real mvps are those that warn you the night before that they're getting up early
    obv this depends on the vibe of the hostel and those in your room!

    I think it is disrespectful to have the light turned on once it gets that great into the night. My roommate in college would always do that last year and even with my eye mask on and earbuds in I couldn’t sleep. It’s just not very considerate to be loud and have the light on in the middle of the night. It’s okay if it’s during the day or even like 11pm but 2:30am is very inconsiderate based on my experience.

  • @sisipinho

    I feel you. I can't sleep with lights on. It's tricky, but I was raised to know that my freedom ends where others' begins. So I'd say unless she had a pretty good reason to be with the lights on at 2am, she should've turned it off since it could be bothering others. I'd be too shy to ask, but I don't know if you did. Either way, at 7am it's pretty much acceptable xD it should be nearly light out anyway.

    That's hostel living! If it's her personal light, that's completely fine to keep it on (although normally, if I needed light for an extended period of time at night, I would just leave the room). I do have to say - if that's your biggest problem in your hostel, that's pretty good. It could be WAY worse (drunk idiots who fall asleep in your bed, for example).

    You don't NEED to do anything, you are on vacation....but I think if you will sleep half the day anyway (unless you an incredibly packed night) then you should do a staycation. Get a hotel in downtown in your city to let go and change the enviornment and sleep all you want. If you head out of your room at 7 am in a forwign country you can go so far and see more things because you have more time to wait in lines and reroute if you get lost. Just an opinion. I LOVE being up by 7 on vacation and out the door.

It was rude af but if she had been using a personal light it would've okay. Also as someone currently living with a (wonderful) college roommate, I think it's rude for her to leave her light on that long. My roommate tends to go to sleep before I do since I'm a night owl, but I always turn as much light off as I can so that she can sleep. I normally leave my desk light on the lowest setting which is always fine for me, and I never leave a lot of light on when I know she's trying to sleep!!!

    I went backpacking in Europe last year and most people were a lot less courteous than that. It comes with the territory when staying at a hostel. I had earplugs and an eye mask and I was fine.

    I take a sleep mask and ear plugs when staying with friends or traveling with friends. I'm really sensitive to sounds and lighting. My issue not theirs!

    5:33 Same!!!! I always want to have a good layout of where I am and I even try getting cafe seats with a good view! I was in Montreal and one great place to go is the Ville-Marie observatory, it's an amazing view of the city with a little bar as well!

    Yeah I don't recommend cycling in Amsterdam for tourists, in Alkmaar it's very safe to try! (hint hint hint) Also it's so funny to see Amsterdam from your point of view, because for me it's just the capital and I go shopping there sometimes and that's it.

    Omg Monica, I was also screaming please don't plug in that blow dryer. Next time just buy one there. Not sure behind the science on this, but the voltage is different so it can cause issues!!

    The only reason I could justify leaving a light on overnight in a room you're sharing with other people is that maybe she was uncomfortable or nervous and leaving the light on gives her comfort

    You may have used a converter but the plugin on your hairdryer looks like it's just an adapter. Just a reminder to not confuse those two

    Hey I think your hair dryer might have the wrong voltage for European outlets. American hairdryers have different voltage which would cause a short.

    I had a more terrible experience in a hostel before. We were staying in an island hostel and the bunkbed accomodations were mixed between male and female. I was on the top bed and a man was under. The night became late, i was still trying to sleep and boom! The bed started shaking and I was constantly hearing moans! For many hours! It started at 11pm im guessing and ended at 4am or so. Im dead tired from surfing and had to catch a flight in the morning. How traumatic is that. Hahahhahaha anyway Monica, hostels has its ups and downs.

    I think she definitely shouldn't have had it on. Even though its a hostel you should think about the feelings of the other people in the room and how they probably wont be sleeping with that light on all night. Not caring is honestly just selfish. Just like if you were playing music all night they wouldn't be sleeping, but obviously you would care. Hope you had a great trip and i'm so exited for more secret messages

    If its like a night light then sure, but like a big bright ass lamp is just rude. I personally like to have some sort of light on when i sleep but like if im sharing a room with others, i just manage without a light for a few nights.

    My sister is in college and her dorm mates always leave the lights on at night. She can’t sleep as well and it’s really bothersome. I think it’s wrong honestly. You can have like a Little night light plug but I think that’s it. She wears a sleep mask to bad now.

    I’m in Taiwan, stayed in a few hostels here. People will even leave the light on when they sleep for some weird reason (and snore like a beast if you’re lucky!). My guess would be cockroach paranoia, lol. I wouldn’t say it’s rude, rather that Taiwanese can be very “unknowing” when it comes to considering others boundaries in such situations. I’d put it down to cultural differences. She’ll have no idea it’s bothering anyone.

    I had a roommate like that (always kept her light on until 2 or 3am when she wasn’t even in the room) and when we told her it was bothering us she didn’t even care. I had to live with her for like a month. I think you’ll always have to be prepared for the worst case scenario 😂 you live and you learn I guess 😄

    Hey, as a non American person I would ask her to plz turn her lights off if she didn't need it ( communicate your discomfort to that person, assuming that people sometimes don't mean to bother others) I do it as part of my culture that prevents me from back biting, also we see it as a way of life in a friendly society... I also noticed from living in the US for a while now that this is not an option for an American because they're so respectful of personal space and they would assume that doing so is a transgression of that person's personal space? .... maybe I'm wrong? But I would love to read peoples thoughts

    about the light on, I have been staying on a lot of hostels lately and had a similar situation, although I don't consider it to be "rude" it is definitely very annoying
    (my roommate had her light on all night long, it was pointless and disturbing)

    I definitely think the light on is annoying, but maybe she needs to sleep with a light on? If it was her own light it's not rude and she probably wasn't realizing that you weren't able to sleep. Hostel living is cheap, but can definitely be inconvenient living with people in such close quarters.
