As a person who is an Englishman, I can tell you that this guy's accent is bogus. Some of it sounds like Peter Dinklage's upper class accent from Game of Thrones, while some bits are clearly taken from an Australian accent. This guy sounds like an American doing a bad English accent.
+Ian Cooper you can't call that, and it would be offensive of you to say so, yes the accent is horrid, but it could be legit. It is entirely up to you now to provide evidence and proof of your claim
This is definitely a systemic problem with the misconception of atheism. Yes it comes from the pulpit. True story I told someone that I am an atheist and he basically said I worship Satan. I told him I dont worship Satan because I dont believe in Satan!
Today I'm an agnostic atheist, tomorrow....who knows. Pastor George is an atheist. Proof that atheism closes its doors to no one. The Church Fathers had no problem using forgeries and falsehoods to maintain their hegimonic power over the people: _"It is necessary sometimes to use falsehood as a remedy for the benefit of those who require such a mode of treatment."_- Eusebius (Praepartio Evangelica, Book XII, Chap. 11) and _"It may be lawful and fitting to use falsehood as a medicine, and for the benefit of those who want to be deceived."_ - Jerome (12th Book Of Evangelical Preparation). Pastor George is just doing what the Church Leaders have always done: Mislead in order to misdirect, confuse in order to convert, and deceive in order to dominate.
the caller does have a point. I've been watching this show (20 minute segments) for a couple of years now and I thought that the anti theists pov was a part of atheism.
I agree with Miles that theists watching this show might start believing that atheist = anti-theist. But i agree with Matt more that this is a problem of the theists caused by their own ignorance. And i also agree that if Miles has a problem with people making this association, he should get out and make everyone understand what an atheist is. Maybe then we'll stop hearing crap like: "You're atheists, you say there's no god.".
I'm a theist and not only do I not dislike the show I like it, if for no other reason than it gets people to think more rationally (or rationally at all, in some cases) about their beliefs.
IvaNiftyChannel So? It's obvious that everyone will worry about their own problem. What he's saying is pretty logical. And it's not the first time I hear it.
I considered his points to be completely irrational nonsense. I guess if you're worried about taking illogical irrational people seriously, then that's your problem.
+IvaNiftyChannel It's a good thing that stupid, biased and bigoted people never hold office, never become bosses, never try to pass laws based on their opinions, or never become parents to pass on their opinions.
Paula Catlover if they hold office, it's because they got elected. The problem there is how and by whom. When they're bosses, it's their supervisors duty to ensure that their stupidity in some field doesn't impact work climate negatively or spread down the command chain. If they're top of the company ladder, they're free to run the company as they wish, as long as it's within the confines of law. If the company makes statements that reflect some CEO's opinions, it's the public's job to withdraw their support. If they're parents, all i can say is that stupid people have the right to raise stupid children using stupid methods. It's not ideal, but it's reality. And if you're the child in such a situation, i'm afraid you're gonna have to make due as best as you can until you're of age. In all these situations, their actions are the problem, and while their opinions and beliefs inform their actions, there is no reason why anyone should take irrational opinions seriously, other than to predict and anticipate the future inappropriate behavior of these people.

Ok well that's your opinion, personally I liked Dons way of using humor and to me he was one of the better hosts, he cut right to the point of the discussion and held callers to it, plus I like the way he just laughs at some of the crazy shit callers say.
I'm having trouble trying to figure out what his fake accent is supposed to be. It seems a mix of English, South African, Indian, Australian, American 'Southern' accent, and some others that I can't even identify. George, if you want to call with a fake accent, here's a tip. Pick a person that has that accent, and pretend everything you are saying is being said by that person (in your head) and project that.
Remember when George (who this is) tried to phone in as this character again? Matt said he didn't believe him and his voice went right back to his own. Silly old coot!
***** The Apathy Experience, with Doctor Fake Accent and Reverend Anti-Theist Agnostic... today's guest a self hating Jew for Jesus and his dog that performs miracles. LOLZ
That's right, if 'Miles' AKA 'Pastor George' is so concern-trolling and worried how 'oitheists' are negatively viewed by others, then he should start his own concern show.
Fancy pretending to be an atheist and arguing that if he is misled by the title. theists will be misled. I am surprised he lasted that long on the air. BTW he argues with the logic of a theist.
Yes it does. Your comment makes exact sense lovey. George is a dimwit and does argue with theist logic. That's why it's so funny. And I think Matt knew exactly who he was and that's why he was so hard on him. Just saying
The accent, an American imitating an English accent (however no-one else has this accent in England). However, he says 'Atheist' with an Australian accent. His vowels yes, that's him. 6.20 'What you seem to me' is George! Comfort also says 'Atheist' this way, heavy on 'A'.
To classify as Atheist you only have to agree on 1 thing. Yes Atheists have different views on all sorts of matters, just as any member of any group have. One atheists view doesn't speak for the entire atheist population. That's the whole point if freethinking, we don't just follow what someone else says we have our own brain and we use it.
Love this show Would consider myself anti-theist. But after watching so many episodes and seeing these idiots that call. I can almost understand the callers point. Albeit on a small scale. How many episodes does Matt define what he means when he uses athiest at least 4 times and by the end of the call the caller still thinks it means he said "god doesn't exist". He's got a point. Not a substantial one. He could have explained better too.
this sounds like the pastor guy who said is kids from church was watching the show .? He was upset then as well. anybody remember him . really loud and matt thought it was a prank call, with a lot of yes sirs in it .
Anti-theism or anti-theist IS one type of experience of an atheist may exhibit. Thus discussing it is perfectly in line with the title of the show - The Atheist Experience.
They're not mutually exclusive. They're not mutually exclusive. They're not mutually exclusive. They're not mutually exclusive. How many times does Miles need to be told this before he realises that they are indeed not mutually exclusive?
I like the show the way it's run. What does the caller expect the AE to do? Be more polite to people who say stupid shit? Coddle them for their immoral and corrosive worldview? The show is very strait foreword. You call in and state what you believe and why. The hosts do a great job of regularly deconstructing shoddy logic. Matt usually tries to take things a step further by suggesting an alternative moral system. I can't say that he has a great success rate, but it keeps the show interesting.
More often than not, the host's anger and frustration stems from the attitude of some callers. Either spouting random, unsubstantiated claims, or more regularly, the misinterpretation and dishonest representation of the host's own words.
I agree with Matt no one should have to go into every single detail of who and what they are If people don't know what the definition of Atheist means (or any word that describes some one) then they should have all these preconceived notions of them when I meet a religious person I don't instantly believe they think I'm going to hell. I mean one of my best-friends from school was/is Christian. My mum is Catholic. I tend not to run around with these concepts of people in my mind. I also know that there a plenty of people both religious and non religious who do have these preconceptions. I see these preconception of others alot in Christians(None I've met IRL) but i think thats for alot of reasons. 1. Its kind of how they are taught with there religion, people who don't believe are evil, Gays are Evil, Abortion is bad (I know not all hold theses beliefs) 2. We are conflicting sides of the argument.
I think Miles' point is that he thinks that due to the show the term/word "atheist" is becoming more often improperly interpretated as antitheist and that this, in particular in the mainly theist society, is causing additional harm to those who claim to be an atheist.
The comment of mine that you originally replied involved me saying that one can be both an atheist and anti-theist. Miles in his reply to me mentioned that theists can be anti-theists with regards to *other gods* than the one they believe in (eg: Christian believing that Lord Shiva does not exist). If you need more clarification, let me know.
Jillum89-- "So don't you want to rephrase things, rename your show, push the ide that a collie is not JUST a dog, but more dog than dog, sir, and a collie is what people will think of and be confused, and no one can figure this out, sir, so...uh...what is it that I want? Collies, colliers, working on coal mines, um...I know you said it but what did I say? I'm made of rubber, you're made of glue, sir, whatever I say bounces off of me and ... no, sticks to me, or was it you who was confusing things, or?"
It is because what the caller is saying is completely nonsensical. He wants them to be really polite and politically correct toward Christians all the time because he is afraid Christians will come after him if he is an atheist. He does not realize (despite Matt explaining again and again), that Christians already go after atheists for no reason. Matt is also very passionate and absolutely refuses to act conservatively. That cannot get through the caller's thick skull.
It is often those who were most devout as theists who can be the most outspoken as atheists once they change. Matt is a big example of this. I support his approach because I also believe that atheists have to speak loudly to make themselves heard in a world where theism still has too much influence over secular affairs. I think that Miles might have a different outlook if he were an atheist living in a nation where religion actually has legislative power, like in Iran.
Pastor George does an English accent like Kevin Costner.
mike5556 He's got an Australian accent... I think.................

Doohan was lauded for his 'accent'. As far as DvD goes, since Cockney is all over the place to begin with, who's to say it's a bad affectation?

He's from Douchebagia, it's on the outskirts of Clownassville....odd accents from there.
davids11131113 I passed through there once... smells of bullshit. :P
I would guess it's an American trying to do a posh English accent.
Remember when George (who this is) tried to phone in as this character again? Matt said he didn't believe him and his voice went right back to his own. Silly old coot!
Miles needs to start his own show.
It appears that atheist proselytize and theists (except for adherents of Judaism) proselytize.
Love how he pretends. George. Come on.
Fancy pretending to be an atheist and arguing that if he is misled by the title. theists will be misled. I am surprised he lasted that long on the air. BTW he argues with the logic of a theist.
I just reread my comment and it doesn't make a lot of sense.
Yes it does. Your comment makes exact sense lovey. George is a dimwit and does argue with theist logic. That's why it's so funny. And I think Matt knew exactly who he was and that's why he was so hard on him. Just saying
lol thanks Rebecca
And around and around we go, and at every turn, this guy seems to be losing his accent by degrees.
I wonder why he was putting on that weird voice.
Because that was Pastor George from Dunmore. He's called in many times before. You can check out some of his calls on UA-cam.
RileyKaiSeeker ah I see. Is he a Pastor or a "Pastor" ?
David Heffron
I think he's a proper church pastor.
RileyKaiSeeker fuck
RileyKaiSeeker
I knew it! That guy's a nutcase.
this is very interesting . this is like a *meta* atheist experience discussion
Wow, fake accent much? XD Aytheust?
Trying valiantly for English, falling short at Australian...
The accent, an American imitating an English accent (however no-one else has this accent in England). However, he says 'Atheist' with an Australian accent. His vowels yes, that's him. 6.20 'What you seem to me' is George!
Comfort also says 'Atheist' this way, heavy on 'A'.
I wonder if Matt realizes that he is just as bad as the fundamentalists he opposes.
Is that pastor George putting on an outrageous accent?
Love this show
Would consider myself anti-theist.
George Again
Skip from the beginning of the call to 5 mins in. Accent is totally different.
Anti-theism or anti-theist IS one type of experience of an atheist may exhibit. Thus discussing it is perfectly in line with the title of the show - The Atheist Experience.
When you're an atheist who has been fired from your job simply for being an atheist then tell me I ought to think there's some good in religion.
Anybody else notice that this guy's accent keeps going in and out?
This guy is pretending to be an atheist when he's clearly religious. And wtf is that accent?
We know this is George in Dunmore, right?
Sure does.
More often than not, the host's anger and frustration stems from the attitude of some callers.
Either spouting random, unsubstantiated claims, or more regularly, the misinterpretation and dishonest representation of the host's own words.
"George, you are so sad."
The caller is putting that accent on.
Dude can not get the titles "atheist" and "anti-theist" but wants a new title for an atheist who is also an anti-theist. Or an I-theist as he calls it
I agree with Matt no one should have to go into every single detail of who and what they are If people don't know what the definition of Atheist means (or any word that describes some one) then they should have all these preconceived notions of them when I meet a religious person I don't instantly believe they think I'm going to hell.
1. Its kind of how they are taught with there religion, people who don't believe are evil, Gays are Evil, Abortion is bad (I know not all hold theses beliefs)
2. We are conflicting sides of the argument.
I think Miles' point is that he thinks that due to the show the term/word "atheist" is becoming more often improperly interpretated as antitheist and that this, in particular in the mainly theist society, is causing additional harm to those who claim to be an atheist.
The caller just doesn't get it.....Matt wants him to "HATE"!!!
Saying "Jeffrey" screams fake caller.
Asking people to use logic isn't a bad thing.
"You're on TV, saying that Lassie is a dog, but to me it just seems that Lassie is MORE of a collie than a dog."
There's no real nice way to express the idea that you think what someone believes is BS.
"Yeah, so gwhaat?!"
Dead.
