  • Produced by the Atheist Community of Austin. The Atheist Experience # 797 Clip. Hosted by Matt Dillahunty & Martin Wagner. January 20, 2013.
Meet Kenny a full blown young Earther Creatard from Elk Grove, California. This isn't Kenny's first time in the logic hot seat. Kenny graced us with his special brand of "thinking" in TAE episode #721. It appears Kenny didn't use the time blazing new trails in critical thinking, because here he goes again. Kenny opens with a 60 year old research paper which he claims proves the radiometric dating process is unreliable. Although this research may be cutting edge for Creatards, both Martin and Matt casually point out the conclusions are not accepted by Scientific academia. Kenny is a perfect example of the flawed logic utilized by the Young Earthers and their ilk. Matt and Martin both display great patience with Kenny's ignorance, and it's entertaining watching Matt dissect his bullsh*t. Enjoy.

I've explained to you the misconception in your view and that is that you define the divine as something necessarily supernatural. This is the very same reason Matt couldn't even consider a view on religion like Perennial philosophy.

I've had lots of lengthy arguments with ID guys as I call them, because to me, their agenda is pretty clear. They are paid trolls that you can't argue science with because they are experts in dismissing it. This is the only thing that the Discovery Institute does.
The only way to have any discussion with them is to figure out how to expose their agenda, or if you are very very very lucky, teach them to rationalize, I don't expect to ever accomplish that, unfortunately.

How true. I remember the Ken Ham vs Bill Nye debate. Where the host turns to bill and says 'so Bill, what will make you change your mind?'
Bill turns and says 'if I am given proper evidence that is undeniable I will change my mind and accept creationism'
He turns to Ken 'so Ken, what will make you change your mind?'
'Literally nothing, there isn't a single thing ever that would make me change my position, you could prove literally everything I believe wrong, use a time machine to take me back and see "Jesus" rot until he was a skeleton and the flood didn't happen, and I still would believe'.
It's fucking silly, that the ones out in the public view that are the most vocal are the ones who say 'literally nothing could change my mind'. They just go to these debates to preach and get their message out to sell shit to their audience.

    • @Gericho49
      @Gericho49 5 років тому

Speaking of dichotomies, here are some we all accept to be true
The past is either eternal or finite
matter/energy was created ex nihilo or has existed in some form for all eternity
Either the physical realm has an explanation for its existence or it doesnt _law of sufficient reason._
Either an infinite regress of past physical events or states is impossible or it isnt.
The universe we observe could be described as either a lawless, lifeless chaos or a miracle (Einstein)
Either a Superintellect has monkeyed with physics or nobody has (Hoyle)
Either Roger Penrose is right in concluding the universe is fined tuned or he wasnt
Either the *abstract immutable laws of science* were invented by our brain chemistry or they were discovered
The pre-conditions of the BB, the independent constants of physics and the immaterial laws of science that make our universe rationally intelligible and life supporting require an immaterial explanation or they dont.
Biologists must keep reminding themselves that everything was not designed or just admit to the evidence as being overwhelming. (PCW Davies)
Either aliens seeded the earth to explain the origin of life here (Crick, Dawkins) or naturalists dont have a clue.
Either life is a blind undirected, unintelligent, bottom up process explained by "common descent" or a purposeful, suoer-intelligent, top-down process confirming "common design."
Either a naturalistic worldview explains ultimate reality or a purely physical reality is the better explanation.
"mindless matter is the only game in town" ! Is true or false
Either we were designed for a purpose or we're just a bunch of chemicals with no value, meaning or future
Either God exists or he doesn't
Either God cares about and has a purpose for creation or doesnt
Atheism is true or theism is
morality is just doing what is fashionable in some culture at some point in history or is the same for everybody
Morality is just socially contrived by each culture according to its own legislated, survival needs or it isnt.
(Some things are wrong even if everybody is wrong or some things are right even if no body is right.)
Trying to prove to ourselves that a "sky-daddy" God doesnt exist is a meaningless waste of our ever-diminishing life or it really does matter.
Either I'm going to end up as future worm fodder or there *is* life afterdeath.
I should be re-iterating all my hedonistic desires while I'm still able rather than wasting endless time in the dark dungeons of cyberspace trying to prove to these theists that their lives are a deslusion even if they lead happier, healthier more joyful and productive lives. Your choice!!

I'm in sales for a small foundation repair company. I once spent 3 hours at a potential customers house listening to him discuss young earth creation and his God. I bit my tongue and eventually ended up getting the sale. I never once pretended to believe anything he was saying. I just let him talk and smiled while agreeing with him when he talked about helping people. You are correct in saying that I could have walked away. But it was my job to sit there and listen to him because I wanted to help fix his basement and I need to keep the company working for the sake of everyone employed there.

I don't think Kenny knows how academia works, or how peer review in the scientific community works - I think he wants to believe in conspiracies, because that makes him feel like he is in the 'know', without having to make an efford to get educated and use his brain to understand what science is actually about.

I am pretty sure, that the education system doesn't recognise Creationism as a valid theory, but that science is fact
I recently did my A Levels at college, and in my exam I put the answer "Because God says so" to every answer, and shockingly I failed the exam.
All the answers on history, science, biology etc were all proper answers rather than saying "God did it" and I passed.
It's a funny world isn't it, a world that is clearly as a result of evolutionary advances and developments over many millions of years

There are actually some teachers that tell their students that Genesis is true and the Earth is only 6000 years old.

Come on Chris3 or whatever other feeble faceless pseudonym u hide behind. You know all the arguments for God's existence, not least the very ironical fact that u and millions like you waste endless hours in cyberspace desperately trying to prove to themselves their dubious lifestyle choices have no consequences beyond their immediate effects. Ask yourselves *what evidence should we expect to find for God and what evidence do we observe that might indicate He doesnt exist?* So which argument would u like to offer a facts-based, point-by point rebuttal?
      * why there is something rather than nothing
      * the finitude of past time and thus creation ex nihilo
*the origin of all time, space and matter (existence from non existence)
      * every thing that comes into existence, needs a cause
      * our finite universe needs a cause beyond itself
      * the impossibility of an infinite regress of past finite events or states
      * the uncaused cause, the unmoved mover (Aquinas)
      * the rational intelligibility of our awe-inspiring the universe
rather than the "Chaos" as Einstein suggested?
      * the "miracle" we do observe rather than a lawless, lifeless chaos (Einstein's observation)
      * the impossibility of naturalism to explain the origin and existence of all the universal immutable and *immaterial* laws of science
      * the fact that such laws are defined by and written in the metaphysical language of abstract mathematics
      * exquisite fine tuning and design of i) the 4 independent physical forces ii) the pre-conditions of the Big Bang iii) the fine tuning of numerous physical constants e.g. the expansion rate (Lambda) accurate to 1 x 10^123 necessary for the universe to exist at all.
      * the objective moral argument cf. whatever is fashionable in some culture at some point in history
      * the awesome beauty and biodiversity we observe in nature
      * the most dominant issue in all human history that nearly every individual in nearly all cultures at most times in history have searched for meaning and transcendence aka God.
      * the fact that atheist "biologists must constantly remind themselves that what they see was not designed but evolved." (Crick and Dawkins)
      * the complete inability of Darwinian ideology to explain cosmic and chemical evolution and thus Creation.
      * the origin, existence an incredible complexity of DNA as the blueprint for life. (information is not material)
      * Common descent Vs common design in evolutionary theory
Are u willing to follow the evidence where it leads or are u like Jean Paul Sartre whose circular reasoning says it all *"if God exists I am not free Since I am free, therefore God does not exist."?*

I review it and although i don't agree with its conclusions, i personally can't see whats wrong with it. i discretely share it with my colleagues and they too cannot see the error. I think i wouldn't publish it because i'm not a creationist, and once somebody discovers what's wrong with it, myself and my journal would lose all credibility and i'd become known as the creationist guy when i'm not. just to be on the safe side for purely selfish reasons i would keep it to myself. no conspiracy required.

That's what we teach freshmen NOT to do (if they didn't learn it at a much earlier age).
If you get a paper that supports something astounding, and you can't see anything wrong with it, and neither can a few colleagues, you show it to more scientists. If it gets past a lot of serious scientists, then you publish, because a) no one can blame you if it turns out to be invalid (except anti-scientists such as creationists, and we really don't give them much thought), and b) it's either valid and astounding, or invalid and persuasive in a very interesting way, so either way it's an important result that will win your journal undying fame. Journal editors dream about such papers.

So I gave this guy a chance. At first I was very surprised to see that indeed it seemed like the scientific community ignored his research. But after digging deeper I found out that his papers were published and put up for peer review. His peers then asked questions so that his findings could be repeated and studied by others. These questions were not answered. He failed to be bale to provide the basics to have his hypothesis verified.
Here is a thorough article on this whole thing if anyone is interest. Basically he was ignored because he published his paper and basically couldn't offer up a way that the scientific community could test and repeat his findings.

I REALLY hate to say this but there is one point, ONE, that Kenny is right on, that science journals can and often do (in the US and especially western nations, where corporate/business controls and interests are insanely high) decline scientific papers in favor of pushing an agenda. However, HOWEVER, these instances, in my research, tend to ONLY happen when a major and powerful corporation or industry wants a scientific paper to say a certain thing or not be published at all (pharmaceutical, oil, and big agriculture are the main culprits), monsanto and the vanishing bee research is a prime example of this. Unfortunately for Kenny, these guys are right, what he is proposing is cherry-picked, junk science.
