Today I’m going to show you how to make a simple milestone blanket, and all you need is a blanket and some iron-on vinyl. And since we’re working with iron-on vinyl, I’m also going to show you how to layer it so you can make cute decorations on your blanket. Like an adorable Baby Yoda, or a super cute giraffe, both of which were made with layered iron on vinyl. A lot of people tell me they’re confused about layering iron on vinyl, but it’s really pretty easy, and I’ll show you how.
For this tutorial, I’m using several kinds of vinyl - for the numbers and letters, we’re using a soft flocked vinyl that feels like fabric. And for the layered iron-on decorations, I’m using regular Cricut everyday iron on, which is your basic iron-on vinyl that works on pretty much everything for the giraffe, and Cricut SportFlex iron on vinyl which is great for stretch fabrics like this fleece polyester blanket - I used this for the Baby Yoda. You can layer almost any vinyl - just don't put other vinyl on top of glitter iron on, foil iron on, holographic iron on, patterned iron on, or printable iron on. If you want to use those, they should be your top layer. And you can layer SportFlex iron on, which we’ll do, but then you should ONLY use SportFlex in your layers and no other vinyl because SportFlex stretches and the others don’t.
There are a few important things to remember when layering iron on vinyl.
1. If you have more than two layers of iron on vinyl, reduce your press time by at least half, otherwise you risk overheating and overpressing the bottom layers.
2. Always use a cover sheet of some kind when you iron on additional layers of iron on vinyl, like a teflon sheet or parchment paper (that’s what I use).
3. When possible, trim your iron on vinyl layer’s carrier sheets so that you can do multiple colors at once - it cuts down on time and reduces the likelihood you’ll get little lines where your carrier sheets were.
4. If you’re having issues getting your iron on layers lined up, you can use the star alignment tip: add stars to each layer in the same spot and use them as a way to align your layers each time. The stars don’t have to end up on your finished project, and I’ll show you how that works!

I love your channel. Not only do I LEARN so much, but you actually lift my spirits every. Single. Time. Your voice and personality is so calming and inviting and I love it.
I also love how much of a crafty-pro you are, but you still show the mistakes and struggles. It can feel so discouraging when the process in vids is executed perfectly, yet at home, it never works that way!
Goin to have to watch it again to understand the stars part thought lol… my 5 yr old is home sick and I’ve watched this 3x and still having a hard time comprehending 🤣 That’s not an instructor issue though, just a tired mom issue hahah ty again!
Wow, thank you! I love hearing that! 💕
So glad I found this! My daughter just assumes I can do any craft project so she volunteered me to make her Valentine's gift for her boyfriend, I was apprehensive about the layers but this helped me feel confident and I made it through the project!

Thanks Meredith! A sculpted baby Yoda would be adorable! So glad to have you here! Thanks for watching!
I watch The Mandalorian as well and also think Baby Yoda is absolutely adorable!!! I keep telling my husband "isn't he cute!!?" several times during every episode we watch. I will definitely be using Baby Yoda on a future project once I get my Maker and can access the images in Design Space.

This is so cute, thank you. And just for a heads up, if you are a cricut access member the entire cartridge with this image was only $9.09 to purchase. The R2D2 and the 3CPO in this cartridge are also cute. If your a star wars fan the cartridge is a great idea.
Awesome tip, Linda! Thanks for watching and happy crafting! :)

Super cute
Thanks Kathy!
Cute!
Thanks!
Most cricut things I’ve been able to kinda figure out on my own. But I couldn’t figure out how to layer HTV. It’s been so annoying to have to live in this one color bubble. Thanks for a great tutorial!
I love your videos, they have a sweet but little intro and jump right into the project. Thanks for being an awesome crafty-godmother!
Got some more help for you right here, Christine! And thank you for your kind words! 😍

@@JenniferMaker would you recommend using two different brands to layer? I have Siser as well as Cricut brand. Typically with Siser it's only pressed for 10-15 seconds.
Thanks 😊

Best Channel EVER!!
Haha! LOVE this! Thanks for watching! It washes pretty well! :)
I absolutely love this. I wish I knew someone expecting so that I can make it. I was wondering if you would do a larger than mag window cling tutorial. Thank you 😊
Isn't it so cute? Today, I made a large than mat cardstock design. You can do a window cling very similar. Check out the video here: ua-cam.com/video/GbE9TOtUbK0/v-deo.html
Jennifer Maker Thank you, I will watch later so I can do the window cling at the same time.
We need to see baby Yoda on one of your amazing dresses.
OMG YES!! Agreed! Huge Star Wars geek if you can't tell! Maybe for May 4th! ;-)
I am too. I blamed it on my husband (who loves Star Wars, has even read all the books). Then my parents busted out pictures of an 8yo me dressed as R2D2 for Halloween 😂. Now I just go with it.
So cute! Love to see how to do the layers. Question, I have seen in directions before to then heat the other side. Flip it over and iron on the fabric behind the decal. Do you need to do that and what determines when and if you do?
Yes, flip the shirt over and iron on the other side. It really helps to adhere the vinyl to the shirt.
Your videos are always so detailed and informative thank you so much for taking the time to really explain everything. Can you tell me how you designed the ears? I saw how you did the eye but other than a triangle and a circle I'm at a loss for what you did to create the Pink of the ears

Sweet
Very! 💗
The words could be Grow You Must. Lol
That's a great idea!
This is the way.
Love that!!
working up the courage to do my first shirt! was looking for how to layer the vinyl and this helped so much! Do you use the same sheet of parchment for the whole project? also in terms of cutting the press time in half, does it matter how many layers there are? you did 5 layers at half the press time per layer, but what if there were only 2? still half time? (im nervous about my project lol.... i want it to be perfect)
If there are only 2 layers I usually press for the entire time. You can use the parchment paper over and over again if it is still clean without any residue.
Awesome Awesome
Thanks, Norman!
@@JenniferMaker I really miss the school/Class u were giving on how to use the machine but I work for the fire Dept and due to Hurricane Ida I missed it bcuz we were working like crazy, but it’s ok I still have you subscribe so that I want miss a episode on how to use the machine, THANKS A MILLION LOVE YOUR CHANNEL

Would you use sport vinyl on sweat shirts? Thanks for exampling the difference vinyl. So much to learn. You’re a great teacher 😌
Yes, absolutely
I love the baby yuda but can u use the same pattern to make like pillows and teashirt
Yes you can! 😃
ok I just watched your baby Yoda video and I love it also but I do not understand about the stars. how do you get them on each layer in the same place? sorry am sort of slow on this and have to look at you videos serval times to get it all together but I agree with everyone. Your videos are the best and easy to understand.

Thank you for sharing this process! I'd love to try the stars, but don't have freezer paper. Could I substitute anything else, like parchment paper or something different?
Yes you can!
@@JenniferMaker Wow that was quick, thank you so much! I'll use parchment paper then 😊
Your baby Yoda is do adorable. Would you say it's recommended to always wash a blanket before putting on vinyl? I have some plush polyester blankets from Kohl's that I want to add vinyl to, but wondering if I should wash them first.
Yes, I would recommend you wash them first. I'm so happy you want to try this out! I'd love to see your project over in our Facebook group! :) You can find the link to it in the description above.
I love it, thank you so much. So that doesnt feel bulky with all those 5 layers?
Its still pretty smooth. I mean thats htv right?
Not at all
So pretty! I am new to Cricut and Ilove your videos Jennifer. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I have a problem though in Design space. Sometimes the four buttons around my image disappear. The drag button, the rotate, the padlock and the close button. How do I get them to reappear on my canvas? Thank you so much for your help.
How strange is that? I would try closing all open windows, clear your cookies and cache, and try reinstalling Design Space. If that still happens, I would contact Cricut about it. You can reach them here:
