I have a love hate relationsnhip with weeding vinyl. I loved the projects I can make with vinyl, but I really dislike weeding. But that's good news for you, because it means I've looked for and found every tip I can on how to make weeding less painful, and I'm going to share them all with you today and answer all the questions I can.
So first, for anyone who is new to this, weeding means to remove the extra vinyl away from, around, and within the design. We use a weeding tool to very carefully peel away the extra background vinyl …also referred to as the negative space or the part of the vinyl we don’t want to include in our finished design.
Here are my tips and tricks for weeding vinyl:
WEEDING BOX: Make a weeding box in Design Space for easier weeding!
WEEDING TOOLS - Weeding vinyl is challenging when you’re not using the right tools. Most people just use the Cricut weeder, not realizing that while it is a fine tool, it may not always be the right tool for the job. Other great weeding tools include dental tools, tweezers, and craft knives. You can also use an empty 5mm pencil and a size 70 needle in place of the lead and make your own weeding tool. Or get fancy and buy a special weeding tool that also serves as an air release pen for bubbles - the other end can hold down small pieces that lift up when you’re removing vinyl.
MAT - A lot of vinyl comes on rolls, specifically Cricut vinyl, and that means when you’re done cutting it can still be really curly and not want to lay flat on your surface. And frankly trying to keep the curl down while you weed can be a nightmare. You can try to keep your vinyl in place while you weed, as that will make it so much easier. There are a few ways to do this. One way is to weed on a slightly sticky (not super sticky) mat to keep it in place. You can use a blue LightGrip machine mat or an older green StandardGrip machine mat.
You can also just tape your vinyl down to your surface with some painter’s tape and that will keep it in place.
Or use fabric weights and that will keep it in place.
SECTIONS - Work from larger to smaller sections during weeding.
POKE - Poke your weeding tool into each section you want to remove. Gently lift it away from the design. Make sure you do not pull up any pieces you want to keep. If they come up, gently pat them back in place and try again. Don't forget the middle parts of the letters!
FINGERS WORK TOO - Once the corner of the vinyl is up, I find it easier to use my fingers to pull up most of the excess vinyl. Then I use the weeding tool again to pull out the centers of the letters.
CUT AS YOU GO - It’s also a good idea, especially with large designs, to cut off the excess vinyl as you go. That way it doesn’t end up sticking to the parts of the vinyl you want to keep.
PULLING UP -- If you find your vinyl is pulling up as you weed, scrap everything down to the liner with the scraper tool to stick it well to the liner, then weed it.
NOT COMING UP -- If, on the other hand, you vinyl isn't come up very well and you know you had the right material setting, it's possible that you cut your vinyl with too much press and it's edges have been sorta of pushed into the cuts on the liner. Try cutting the vinyl again with less pressure.
HACK -- Something else you might want to try with designs that are all connected -- with no floating parts -- is to increase your pressure by a LOT so you can cut right through the liner. This then allows you to pull your design up from the mat ALREADY WEEDED! Try the glitter cardstock when you're cutting iron on vinyl to see if this hack can work for you!
INTRICATE -- If your vinyl has really intricate designs, like thin lines and tiny letters, and they keep pulling up no matter what you do, try reverse weeding instead. We have a whole tutorial on this over at jennifermaker dot com slash four four nine.

Jennifer Can I just mention that I value these videos where you are real to us? These afternoon Craft Parties are so informative, but your never talking down to us - you confess your struggles and its beautiful. Thanks!
Wow, thank you! ❤️
A tip from me.
When you weed on the mat, and have some of the mat not covered with vinyl,
use the mat cover to cover the sticky of the mat that way your arm or shirt isn't sticking to the mat.
Have a great day.
I am loving how much I just keep on learning new things with each new video. This one is particularly packed full of great tips and tricks. Thanks for making our crafting lives so much better!
Wish I could hit the like button multiple times through the sessions! I love your tips & hacks!
Me too!😃
The cardinal vase was my favorite project that I made awhile ago, I just love it. I thanked you then and I thank you again.❤❤
Hubby to the rescue!! Love it. And you didn’t get flustered Jennifer.
Creating the box is a great idea. Thanks. When i first made attempts at weeding it was awful but with practice i now find weeding rather relaxing. It's all fun and i always liked challenges. Love all your inspiration.
I can’t wait to try these techniques out. I just completed 240 Merry & Bright ornaments. I had more problems trying to get the reverse weeding straight in my brain. Thank you so much.

Acckkkk! I bought about 90 rolls of vinyl. Didn't know it has a shelf life
Thanks for the weeding box technique! I'm a Joy newbie and wondered how I could just have the overall design cut without all the detail. 👍
😅 47:07 I'm new, thanks for the tutorials, I'm learning sooo much.
We are SO happy to help! 😊🌻
I absolutely love this project
I feel the same way about weeding! Love the box idea. Thank you!

So glad!
LOVE THE SHOW I'M SEVENTY YEARS OLD AND I LOVE TO LEARN FROM YOU.GOD BLESS YOU.
I'm almost 60 and glad to hear that you, at 70, are enriching your life with amazing Cricut!!
@@lynnemarais I am 62 and love the cricut life, it keeps me going.
Another suggestion for a weeding trash holder is a empty disinfectant wipe container that has the small slots that you would pull the cloth’s through.
Great idea!
I am glad you showed how to get that iron on glitter vinyl off...that is so hard everytime I use it.
If you don't have a light pad or desk lamp, get out your cinnamon and cornstarch or baby powder, a saucer or a small container with a lid, and a fluffy makeup brush.
Use the cinnamon on light colors and powder or cornstarch on dark colors. Just tip out a bit onto the saucer or into the small container, dip in the brush and sweep and swirl the brush across the cut vinyl. Swish until only the cut lines show, then weed.
Once you've weeded the vinyl, use a lint roller, a baby wipe or a microfiber cloth to wipe off the backing sheet and cutouts before applying your transfer sheet.
Thanks for the tips! 😊🌻
Thanks for all your hard work!
I love those houses! I’ve been eyeing those for a week.
I am a new subscriber and Jennifer your channel has taught me so much, are the houses a project you offer? Adorable!!
MIND BLOWN! I'm sitting here with my Air 2 and saying WHY DON"T I SEE THAT?!?!? Because I used the dial!!! Moved it to custom and man things are cutting out much better! THANKS!!!
Hubs bought me a lamp that is also a magnifying glass! I love it cause my eyes aren't as young as they used to be! Thanks for your tips!
Wow! You have made my life so much easier and I am actually excited to use my Explorer II again. I was so intimidated the last time I tried weeding.
I'm so happy to hear that! 🥰
thank you for this tutorial I enjoyed it very much .
Great tutorial Jennifer. Tfs and God Bless 🥰💜
I have to tell you, when you said “Make weeding less painful “ I nearly broke into tears. Seriously. I have disabilities and most everything I do is painful but last week I did two TWO, Libby glasses and I haven’t been able to use my hand for a week and it’s still extremely painful because of the weeding it took to get them done. I desperately need to learn some more tips for weeding. Thank you ❤
I'm so sorry to hear that!
Yes, I love my cricut weeding kit.
Third attempt at using the Joy but very first successful attempt thanks to this video. That drawing a box around it tip came in real handy. I am sitting here with my first weeded design but only have the Stronggrip tape and don't want to destroy my fully weeded design. Now that I watched this whole video I'm going to wait and order some standard transfer tape. Thanks for your help.
Glad it helped!
Great tips. I'm fairly new to Cricut, so every little tip helps enormously
I'm happy to help!
YAY!!! So many great tips! Thank you!!!
Hi, an old tip trick for weeding I learned in the 90’s from a sign company was to see cut lines is to use a touch of baby powder if you have no light box or good lighting/eyes works great for darker vinyls. Or colored chalk for white vinyl . Also marking chalk for Sheetrock
Yes! Baby powder works great! I like the colored chalk idea for white vinyl.
The weeding box is such a great idea.
What can I say another wounderful teaching lesson! Sorry I miss the live the replay was great and enjoyable as always get tips and info!!! Love this video I will have to try the Pen Hack
I am excited to use your tips.
Glad you like them! 😊🌻
I can't stand weeding small letters! They always come up and move around and yes stuck everywhere but where I want them! Great video and so helpful!
they can definitely be tricky!🥰
Weeding box is an awesome idea!
Weeding boxes. I had no idea! I have wasted so much vinyl because when I'm pulling it it gets stuck on the back side and I don't know what I'm doing obviously and I am thank you so much I just thank you thank you thank you thank you. You literally just save me
You are so welcome! 😃 ♥️
You can weed with an exacto blade. That way you can cut as you go (and you don’t have to search for scissors). And if the tip gets dull, you can replace it.
Very true!
I am a newbie so I appreciate all the tips you are sharing. :)
I'm so glad! Welcome!
Im a little behide ive been sick watching some of video now Thanks
Hope you feel better soon! 😊🌻
Hi Jennifer I finally figured out how down load your book. I’m loving my joy still have a lot to learn but I have you so I will be fine!! 😂
Thank you! 😃
Great hack cutting right through yayyy
Thank you very, very, very much helping me understand this vinyl world. At least the tricky part of it. The explanations are very clear added to your cool, calm and educational voice.
Being an asthmatic, I find I’m sick after a project. Is there something I’m
doing wrong ? My work space is air conditioned though. 😢
Thank you for your precious help.
You're so welcome! I don't think that weeding vinyl can cause any health issues, but you should reach out to a medical professional with any concerns. 😊🌻
Love weeding in the car!
Love this, pretty design
Glad you like it! 😊🌻
Great tips, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! 😊🌻
Hi and thank you for sharing
Congratulations Ladies
Oh my God. You are the best. I love your videos
Thank you!
It's overwhelming with all the different vinyls !
There are really only three types. Permanent, Removable, and Iron-on. 😊🌻
I’m, you’re brilliant! Weeding boxes🙌🏻
😃 ♥️
Jennifer, as you suggested, I have my pressure setting on 'more', but if I need a deeper cut, how do I do that on my Explore Air 2? I so enjoy watching your tutorials and videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I'm going to try this. Bought some shadow boxes recently.
Awesome! 😊🌻
Hello! Hope you are having a great day
Had to watch after live was done. 😁
Lol. Me too. Watching now
I saw a video where after cutting an intricate design on vinyl, they placed the transfer paper on top of the cut unweeded project then simply pulled the transfer tape up nd the design self weeded. I have not tried this but it looks pretty interesting.
THIS was so helpful, I almost gave my machine away after 4 unsuccessful tries today
Hi, Jennifer ❤
Hello Jennifer!
I just found this tutorial. Thank you very much for all your knowledge. I’m just learning. My question is how did you “connect” the Let it Snow design? Thanks
I redesigned it to have all connecting parts.
