How to Etch Glass the Easy Way (Armour Etch & Vinyl Decals!)

Learn the easy way to etch glass using vinyl decals you can cut on your Cricut using glass etching cream.
MATERIALS LIST (contains my affiliate links):
-Armour Etch glass etching cream - amzn.to/2sB3A8z
-Glass to etch (I used these glass coasters amzn.to/2sCp3Oh and these wine glasses rstyle.me/n/devxc8cbznf )
-Premium vinyl (avoid stencil vinyl)
-Transfer tape
-Paintbrush, small (no foam brushes)
-91% isopropyl alcohol
-Scraper tool
-Masking or painter’s tape
-Disposable gloves
-Eye protection
-(Optional) LED base for the glass coasters amzn.to/2Mjruyu
-(Optional) Hot glue gun and glue to attach your glass to the base.
-A way to cut your vinyl (I used the amazing Cricut) - see jennifermaker.com/cricut-cutt...
-My free SVG/DXF/PDF cut files/patterns (Design # 137) (available in my free resource library jennifermaker.com/resource-li...)

STEP 1: GET THE FREE PATTERN AND GATHER YOUR MATERIALS
You’ll find my free Winged Heart pattern in my resource library jennifermaker.com/resource-li...
STEP 2: GET A VINYL STENCIL
You can easily make them on cutting machines like a Cricut. Use premium (self adhesive) vinyl - avoid stencil vinyl if you’re putting it on a curved surface.
I recommend you make a weeding box around your design that’s just a bit smaller than the glass surface you’ll be applying it too.
Carefully reverse weed your design.
Once your vinyl is weeded, cut a piece of transfer tape the size of your vinyl backing and apply it to the front of the vinyl decal.
Using your scraper, go over the entire decal to make sure it adheres to your transfer tape.
Gently remove the backing from the vinyl.
STEP 3: APPLY YOUR VINYL STENCIL
First, prep your glass by cleaning it well with 91% isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry.
Next, carefully place your vinyl decal on your glass.
Use your scraper over the entire surface of the vinyl to adhere it well to your glass. Gently remove the transfer tape, leaving only the vinyl.
Your goal is to have no wrinkles or creases at the edges of design.
If you are placing your vinyl decal on the curved surface of a wine glass, you WILL have wrinkles in the beginning. Get what you can pressed and scraped down well, then remove the transfer tape.
With the tape removed, check to see if you have wrinkles at the edges of your design. If so, lift up on the vinyl in those spots and gently pull the vinyl away from the center of the design to get it to conform to the curved surface.
If you don’t have a wide margin on your vinyl decal, put some masking or painter’s tape around the edge of the vinyl to prevent getting any etching cream there.
STEP 4: BRUSH THE ETCHING CREAM ON YOUR GLASS
First, remember to wear gloves and protective glasses. You should also shake or stir your Armour Etch etching cream before you use it.
Using a regular brush, brush on the minimum amount needed to cover the glass. You do NOT need to gob it one.
Brush the etching cream around for three full minutes. Brush up and down, side to side, and diagonally. Keep the cream moving around your design, getting into every nook and cranny.
STEP 5: RINSE OFF THE ETCHING CREAM AND REMOVE YOUR VINYL
After three minutes, rinse off the etching cream (or if you used a lot, scrape it back into the container first and then rinse). Make sure you get ALL of the cream off. You do not want to accidentally touch it or get it on your work surface.
Once it’s rinsed, dry it off and remove the vinyl. If you used permanent vinyl like me, it make take a little effort but it WILL come off.
With the vinyl all removed, wipe down the surface again with rubbing alcohol.
And that’s it - enjoy your beautiful etched glass!

Etching is a fun project. I had friends over before Christmas and we etched dollar store beer glasses and plates for presents. It was a fun night!

To be fair, though, I don't include them ALL, but it's only because I try super hard to keep my videos easy to follow and not crazy long. Great video, as usual. Thanks for sharing. I have done several etching projects and have even etched my glass casseroles with no problem. I have etched dollar tree glass cutting boards for gifts that are smooth on the bottom and textured on the front. I agree that simpler designs on curved surfaces makes for easier crafting and better results. I can't imagine why anyone would give you a thumbs down!😐

This is the 3rd tutorial I've seen & once again u came through. Before when I used the Armour Etch, I put it on the glass and let it sit for 3-4 minutes. However, by working it with a brush for that time, my etching was more clean and visible. THANK YOU!
I would try it for 10-15 minutes. It's frustrating that the bottle says 1-3 minutes. My 15 minute etches come out clean!

Q: Does the quality of the brush you use to apply the etching cream matter? I picked up an inexpensive set of 5 at a local craft store that say they are made with 'soft natural bristles'. I'm hoping they will work for this process.
Also related to the brushes; do you reuse them & if yes, how many times? My guess would be to use them until the bristles start adhering to your project. Well, hopefully before they make a mess of things anyway.

@@JenniferMaker The acid doesn't eat the bristles away on the brushes? My guess originally was that acid would damage anything! Do you use a liquid soap while washing them under running water?

First, I LOVE the idea of the illuminated base! I’ll be ordering some.
I make custom bride and groom champagne glasses for wedding shower gifts. Here are two tips that I’ve learned over my many years of making them:
1. Small scrap vinyl pieces are perfect for this! It doesn’t matter what color the vinyl is.
2. If you’re making these to sell, recommend to customers that they hand wash with only soap and water, as the etching does wear off over time. Dishwashing speeds up that process by a lot!
I've been etching for 20 yrs. I have the same set of glasses I first made. They are still as bright as when I etched them. Never had any fading with a dishwasher. But every item is different.
The etching is abrasive process, using chemicals, it's like engraving on a micro way, but not too deep, so I can't see how a etched glass can wear off, unless you polish the etched area, than YES, it may looked like clear glass again, but to do this, you need to apply a lot of force and rubbing on you glasses while washing them.
, Jennifer, I've been pondering etching a set of wine glasses... while your advice was much different than many other videos, and it was definitely different from the manufacturer instructions... I felt you had the most credibility... I used your methods on 8 wine glasses. Everything looks Beautiful! You are absolutely right.. Thank you for Sharing!
Thanks for the clear instructions. I was so excited to see this video yesterday. Immediately I purchased all the items needed last night and etched 2 small size glass cutting boards for a friend's birthday. I had to reverse the design so I could etch on the bottom of the glass. They turned out great! Hope he likes them.

Nicely done video. Thank you for showing the do’s and don’Ts.
If you rinse with hot water, the vinyl will peel away super easy! Also, make sure not to get ANY etching cream outside your vinyl template... it will etch immediately when it touches the glass... so you could tape the exposed edges off with blue painters tape if you want to be safe and not sorry. I have etched many things and once in a while I make a boo boo!
Is it any way to fix the booboo?
@@azadehpourshams4808 , no, you can't remove it, it's like engraved to the glass (and in a way IT IS still engraving, but rather using the engraving tool and *scratch* the surface in this case it's done with chemical reaction to the glass - a *scratch* in a micro way, same thing, different technique)
But, you can use your imagination and artistic skills and mask the "boo boo" with adding more "boo boo's" and make it look like it's done on purpose. It all depends on how big the boo boo is, some defects can be turned into piece of art.
Did u use permanent vinyl or semi permanent pls as I thought with permanent u couldn't remove it once its applied??

You can scrap the Armour Etch off and re-use it. I just put it back in the container - I've been using mine a long time.

Many thanks Jennifer! I stumbled accross your tutorial and thought I'd give it a try after some failed attempts at etching with this product. No where on the instructions do they say to continuely brush the product on for 3 full minutes. Armour Etch basically instructs you to glob it on and leave it for 1 to 3 minutes which left me with a patchy sloppy mess. Your method left perfect clear crisp writing on my bottles ( I etched 12) and they all came out perfect!! Just a note I used some removable vinyl that I had on hand (didn't like the color) and it worked great.

Hello :) I just wanted to share with you and everyone... Armor Etch is a reusable chemical! Feel free to scrape off used Armor Etch with a small rubber/silicone spatula and put it right back inside the bottle for unlimited continuous use! :)

FYI...Some “Pyrex” style glass will not etch. Anyone want to know how I learned this? By the way, I’ve still got some of the 16 casserole pans that were meant for Christmas presents.

Nothing happens. It doesn’t etch at all. I left the etching paste on for over an hour and nothing.
I see people post all of the time they can’t get Pyrex to etch. I have etched 20+ Pyrex dishes and they have always worked. I only leave on for about 10 minutes. I wonder why this happens. I always get nervous when I have an order because so many people have trouble. So far I’ve been good though.

I've been learning/using my cricut for 2+ years now and figuring everything out mostly by trial and error. Have a a couple pretty successful online decal shops and am migrating into glassware. I spent a couple of weeks working on the curved glass applications and sizes for all my logos on different glass pieces.
I found your page yesterday while looking for tips n tricks, and honestly I haven't stopped watching lol. I think my cricut knowledge has more than tripled just this week, and that's solely due to you.

one thing i learned about this etching cream is it is so strong that not only the cream itself can etch but also its fumes. ones the fumes (which is not visible) comes in contact with the glass, it will instantly eat away. so its better to turn off any fan that can blow the fumes on the side of the vinyl where you applied the cream.

I just discovered this. I want you to know how much I appreciate a tutorial where you have chosen your words carefully and avoid repetitive words like "I'm gonna" or "I'm just going to". It may sound silly when reading this but if you watch many of these tutorial videos (even some DIY network shows) certain words that are repeated just grate. You have a good voice as well.

Snipping the vinyl, but not too close to the design, is another good way to have the design lay properly around the curve.
