  • I'm the original owner of a 2009 Scion xB. It's currently sitting at 278,000 miles.
    Tires last me 70,000 miles. (3.5 sets total)
    Brakes last between 50-60,000 miles (manual transmission & engine braking help)
    Changed the battery once or twice
    Changed the fan belt once
    Rear Wheel Bearings were replaced 2 years ago.
    That's it.
    Original exhaust and clutch

    I own a 2010 xb too, i bought it as a salvage vehicle, fixed it and I've had it for 6 years now. Got into a deer accident and fixed it again, and it still runs perfectly fine and has over 180,000 miles. Love my car, and it was actually passed on to me by my mom 1 year ago (Im 18 years old), great car guys.

    I have a courier company here in Colorado and have a small fleet of these along with two 1st generation XB's. We have a couple used for really long distance runs that have over 550k miles on them. One has 613k. The one only non maintenance items we've replaced on all of these were starters (they are started over 30 times a day) and alternators. Super reliable and great cargo capacity.

    My white 2008 xb is at 180k. I named him Artax (after the white horse stuck in the mud in The Neverending story) because he made it through being really suck in the mud up in the (High Uintah mountains in Utah) best car I've ever owned. I work on it myself and never any major problems. Best money I've ever paid. Converting it into a mini rv.

    I appreciate this high mileage review. I have a 2009 with 190k and was considering upgrading to a newer car with more technology, but I love my roomy little car. I think you just made me realize I’d rather keep my xB and just upgrade a couple things knowing it’ll probably last another 100k

    I just bought a 2014 Xb from my aunt, she was the original owner! Car has about 110k miles on it now. So far I’ve been keeping an eye on the oil consumption. Other than that. It’s a very solid car! Really peppy getting around town in!

      Yes, they put the engine in it from the Camry, maybe a little bigger than needed, but it's a good balance between economy and power. Best of luck with it!

    I bought a 2012 Scion with 106K mi. It now has 160K. It’s a great car which I use for delivery work. It does not burn a drop of oil. Some of these cars had an oil burning issue which Toyota fixed. My main repairs were replacing the water pump and replacing the steering rack.
    The steering problem had to be fixed by a dealer because it has electronic power steering and had to be recalibrated by a dealer.
    This is a great car.

    I have 2014 Scion xB brought 5 years ago at 17k miles. Now I have over 64k miles. No major problems yet. It’s running slow going to get a tuneup. Funny it doesn’t have a temperature gauge on the dash like other car. Over all I love it. So reliable!

    I just bought a 2009 xb that had less than 75,000 miles. The owner's manual actually addresses the oil consumption issue. It recommends you check the oil every time you get gas. It specifically states the engine can consume over 1 quart of oil over a 600 mile period. It also says oil consumption is increased by Jack rabbit acceleration, hard braking, and cheaper oil. Fully synthetic is the way to go. Same engine in 2009 Scion TC. I can imagine there were a lot of folks who ran their vehicles hard and never checked the oil. Maybe destroyed their engine at 4,000 miles. I am keeping mine forever. I love it.

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks, I didn't know that was in the owner's manual, I just checked and read it. I think something else is going on though since Toyota did a recall on this problem. The oil consumption was much worse than normal or expected. Why else would they do the recall? And I've owned other cars that don't consume oil between oil changes. I have just gotten used to adding oil between changes and keeping an eye on it.

    • @hopefullyhelpfulinga9433
      @hopefullyhelpfulinga9433 2 роки тому

      To my knowledge there was never a recall over the oil consumption. Just a lot of public outrage over the fact that they did not recall. I think they put out a "bulletin" on the matter. All first generation Scion TCS have a very similar engine. 2005 to 2010 TCS. They put it in the owner's manual to cover themselves. There really aren't too many used first generation TCS for sale. I think it is because a lot of young flashy drivers who never checked their conventional oil ruined their motors. Anyway I love my Scion Xb. I love the large print digital speedometer.

    • @ottallman
      @ottallman 2 роки тому

      There was a tsb about it. Cap was 150k or 10yrs. They did an oil consumption test and if it failed they replaced the motor. I have a 2012 and it had that problem but I didn't find out about it until after the cut. Easily 2-3 quarts consumed between oil changes. Synthetic or not it didn't matter. I think it mainly affected the 08-10 and some 11 and 12's. The xB 2.5 was good.

    • @hopefullyhelpfulinga9433
      @hopefullyhelpfulinga9433 Рік тому +2

      Update: June of 2023. I put in a new water pump, alternator, and battery in January of 2022. Had to replace the power steering module in March 2023. I bought the power steering module used off ebay. It currently has 99,000 miles and is running well. I use fully synthetic 0w-20. After an oil change I know I can drive 30 to 40 days before checking the oil. At that point the oil consumption brings it down to half a quart low. I check the oil every two weeks after that. When the xb is on the lower dot it is one quart low. At that point I add half a quart of oil. I keep running that system until next oil change. My system works well for me. I change oil and rotate tires every 5,000 miles. I actually think the oil consumption issue is why many xbs have such high mileage. I'm always putting new oil in every month. Great vehicle. Very spacious.

    I am on my third Scion Xb. First bought a new 2009 gave that to my youngest son at 182,000 miles. Replaced that one with a rebuilt title 2014 that had only 4,100 miles. Tree then fell on that one last summer and insurance totaled it with only 62,000 miles. Car salvage company bought it and it is on the market again. My third Scion Xb (2015) …I bought this last fall, only had 52,000 miles, now it has 63,000. Not a problem with any of them…only an a/c clutch adjustment on the 2014. Too bad they stopped making them! The 2014 & 2015 had softer suspension than the 2009 and better sound deadening. Loved every one.

    The 60,000 mile service says check the vavle lash. dealer is suppose to listen for valve clatter and if found check with feeler guage. If required add shims to the solid bucket lifters. As you have never been in the shop you obviously did not need to do this. As I recently purchased a 2014 Xb with 53,000, I inquired of all 6 Toyota Dealerships in ND. None had ever performed this check. When inquiring about labor time to do the check anywhere from 1.3 hours to 10.5. Prices varied at each Toyota Dealer from $130 to $3,000.
    2007 to 2009 were the worst notable years for oil consumption. Yours does not seem to be that excessive. Nice video, thanks.

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Steve O. I did not know that. I haven't taken the xB into a dealer except for recalls. My attitude is if it runs fine then it's fine. At the mileage it's at now if it blew up tomorrow, I couldn't be upset.
      My oil consumption is more of an annoyance and remembering to check it when it's about halfway through an oil change interval.
      Thanks for the comment and knowledge.

However the engine had the oil consumption issue and Toyota finally rebuilt the engine, at no cost to me, with better rings and now does not use a drop of oil (so rebuilt engine now has 50,000 miles on it). I see the xb with the 2.4 2AZ motor have oil rings that lock up on the piston and score the bore .starting major oil consumption. Is yours a 2aZ 2.4 ? I wonder how many of these motors develop this oil issue.

Between that, and your experience im feeling pretty good about the longevity of it. I'm thinking why not see how many miles I can get out of it. It doesn't owe me anything at this point. The previous owner had too-wide 19" whees that tore up the driver side wheel well and the alignment was a mess. After putting on some factory spec 17" wheels/tires and eventually getting the alignment issues fixed the car has been great. It had the TDR lowering springs so it rides a bit rougher than I'd like, but otherwise I really like the vehicle. Lots of torque from the 2.4l engine.
