Fine Art + HDR Photography Steetley Pier

- In this video entitled, "Fine Art and HDR Photography Steetley Pier" I combine both genres and I was surprised by how much I liked it!
Earlier this week, I headed to Hartlepool to capture a Fine Art image of Steetley Pier. Whilst I was there I had an idea! Why not capture the pier in my normal fine-art way but also take a few extra bright images which will enable me to add light to the otherwise dark areas of the picture.
That type of photography is called HDR (High Dynamic Range) It's a genre of photography that serious photographers rarely use. HDR photography is a lot of fun. Its original use was over-used and very often over-post-processed. Because of this, I think that's why photographers have put it on the back-burner!
Personally, I still love HDR photography. I need to delve into the genre a lot more. I'm sure the forgotten style still has a lot to offer in these modern days!
I hope you like the video.

M.A.S.T.E.R of fine art !
Cheers Richie 👍👍
I really like the finished image and the side view was a wow for me. Agreed fine art and HDR do work for us that appreciate photographic art.
Cheers Ian 👍
What i love about you with your images, is you for the most part always ask for our opinion unlike many others who just make out like it's their way or the highway and you can't say anything constructive about it.
Now my favourite is actually the 2nd image.
The art form has to be subjective, no matter the photographer or UA-camr.
Cheers Rob 👍👍
What really motivates to go out and take pictures like this, is your genuine happiness while doing this :-)
It's really about being away from the wife but shhh mums the word 😁
Just love the details .. and the light
Thanks Jan 👍👍
Absolutely love your fine art, Gary - bowled over by the HDR - thank you.
Thank you Heather 👍👍
As always spot on by a master of long exposure.
Cheers Ralph 👍👍
I love it....the lightness under it makes it feel as if the pier is floating 🙂👍
Love it! Absolutely worth doing. Thanks for sharing your vision.
Cheers 👍
Just perfect
Cheers Karl 👍👍
As Mali said.
A masterclass from start to finish.
The last image's I thought were amazing.
Another great job Gary.
Cheers Tim 👍
I really like the 45 degree view with those other groins in the foreground
Cheers 👍👍
From start to finish, a masterclass! I wish my long exposure series was coming along as good lol Brilliant Gary
I'm sure, in fact, I know they are Mr Davies. About that date in the diary? come on get it sorted! 😁
Very easy to follow video. Entertaining and informative also. Thanks for teaching us.
My pleasure!
thought the final image was fabulous Gary and loved the additional image shot from the side too. The good thing was you had all the possible data captured so you have options based on your final preference
Gary, as always, your work is amazing! Your depth of knowledge and your expertise is virtually unmatched by other UA-camrs. I really like your fine art work no matter how you achieve it. Excellent video.
Consider yourself added to my Christmas Card list. Cheers 👍👍
The extra picture is just woooooo
Love the final image. You are an inspiration. I do wish we had these types of piers on the Great Lakes, but with no tides, the piers are all vastly lower.
I'm sure they're picturesque in their own right 👍👍
Superb Gary and I’m a lover of HDR so this one is right up my street 👍🏽
Cheers Steve 👍👍
Just amazing!
Cheers 👍👍
Another magical piece of work Gary
Cheers Alec 👍👍
Love these images, love your dedication to your art too where composition and perfection trumps wet feet.
The last shot is my favourite - fantastic composition with the foreground interest. The HDR layer was essential imho.
Cheers Peter 👍👍
@@GaryGough by the way: when I was at Skye I stayed at Rachel’s B&B. She also seems to be a big fan of you :)
Fantastic photos Gary. I can tell you that I prefer the one with the underside of the Pier with more light. The side view of the pier is super Gary. Quality work by a professional for sure.👌👌
Many thanks 👍👍
I like it with the second layer put to it. I straightens the view and fosters imagination stronger than without it. Great work Gery.
This was absolutely stunning. Wish I were you!
Think carefully about what you’re saying, if you were me you’d have to live with my wife and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone 😂😂
Hell's Teeth Gary - absolutely fabulous photos - I just can't get to grips with this post processing - but my oh my the benefits of being able to post process is fully demonstrated by your good self and the end results are amazing.
You’ll have to watch the videos again Keith 😂😂
I’ll make a step-by-step guide on this one too 👍👍
Great video as always Gary. Thanks for the tips. Very interesting 👍😊🙏
Thanks Cath 👍👍
@@GaryGough Your welcome Gary. Looking forward to the next video. Have agreat week .👍😊📸
I personally do like the extra detail, excellent work. And the second shot is very nice as well.
This is my first video of yours that I have seen. First, I think you are a very good teacher. I use a completely different camera/software and had no problem following the concepts presented. For my money, the HDR addition adds more leading lines to your focal point (that tiny triangle in the middle) and adds to it. But I also REALLY like the other shot of the pier that you showed. Its time for me to get a nice filter kit like you use and start playing around. It really does not take that much longer to take the extra shots and then make decisions back home in the studio nor does it take that much extra time to move the camera around seeing if there is a better composition. When I started photography it was with a 4x5 camera and extra shots were pricey! With unlimited memory we really can experiment more (and should!).
I reckon it is worth adding the extra element, and certainly to have the option to do so.
I've learned so much watching your videos - above all is the 'taking my time' lesson. Watching you is so relaxed and lacking any anxiety, it has taught me to give myself time and space when out taking photos.
Kind of you to say, cheers 👍👍
Very interesting - must try it soon
Cheers 👍👍
Brilliant Gary, love the final image of the pier with the lighting effects.
I think HDR and the fine art style work well together, it adds to it I think. I like it. But I do like detail. I will try it, thank you for your knowledge.
Amazing as always Gary! I’m in aww
Thank you so much!! 👍👍
I feel it works, providing it remains in the category of realistic. The image you have created by dialling back the opacity of the blended layer works.
Thanks Nicky xx
I'm watching this while sat beside Steetley Pier 😂
@@djstuc 😂
Oh cool :) It is indeed a cracking place. 👍👍
Yes like the image Gary , 👍 really enjoy your channel. , Best wishes.
Many thanks, Cheer Andy 👍👍
Love it! Amazlng photos!
Nothing wrong with any of it, Gary. Beautiful images!
This is exactly why for me you stand head and shoulders above many other vloggers Gary. Not only do you break the practical and theoretical aspects down into to bite size chunks, but you then go onto explain why you have chosen that particular method, before explaining other ways in which the viewer can achieve the desired results. As for the images., well they really do speak for themselves, brilliant.
Love it gar
Cheers David 👍👍
The images are wonderful. Thanks for an enlightening post.
Great job...thanks
Cheers 👍👍
Absolutely love it,must have a go.
Always live watching your videos, very inspiring.
Very much like your final creation. I’ve often wondered about hdr. Think I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the clear explanation as always. Aloha!
Thanks Michael 👍👍
My grandad worked at the Steetley for almost 40 years!
Great work Gary. I enjoy seeing the combination in the final photo.
I'm rewatching all the videos, Gary and they are even more inspiring on second viewing. You have re-invigorated my love of photography
Then all my hard work has just paid off. 👍👍
Love the images! You make it look easy! Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic final image! I always learn from you! I think the HDR really made a positive difference!Thank You!
love this
Great video, with all the essential techniques clearly explained.
done similar but kept in colour, I like the affect, seems to work well on cloudy days with water in the foreground
Well done and thank you. Really liked the last image, beautiful job.🤩
Another great video Gary. Personally, I prefer your alternative image.
Cheers Paul 👍👍
Brilliant 🙏
To be honest, it works really well, great job
Excellent video - well explained and great results. Opening up the underside of the pier makes a big difference.
I love these fine art photography! Thank you charing your art and knowledge Gary 🤗
Cheers David 👍👍
Beautiful picture Gary HDR was worth it thank you 🙏
Brilliant Gary, love the final image of the pier with the lighting effects, thanks for showing us that.
Cheers Jim 👍👍
Brilliant 🥇
Works for me Gary, nice work! Thanks for sharing.
Gary, you work has inspired me to look at all aspects and not just focus on one spectrum of photography. Thank you for sharing your skills and talents with the world!
I like the HDR.
I love the HDR addition. It really does bring out the otherwise lost dark details. I don’t think it takes away from the original shot, rather, it is more like what the human eye naturally adds in real time viewing to compensate for the dark areas. After all, as good as modern cameras are, they can’t do what the human eye does. At least, not without help in post, LoL!
Great image Gary, really like the HDR effect. But the final image is fantastic!!
Beautiful work as usual, Gary. Well done.
Hi Gary, I prefer the use of HDR for under the bridge, what a difference it made. I loved the last image of the pier and the stumps,it was super and I am gonna guess that was without the HDR treatment. Oh yes, and I prefer the shot under the pier with the extra bits the way you finally chose it to be, as soon as you started I was like “oh no Gary you must keep them in,they make for a far more complete image” , thankfully you seen the light (no pun intended lol). Excellent video, one I was deeply engrossed in from start to finish, thank you 😁👍
Excellent video again Gary really loved your photo as always great work 👍
Brilliant as usual Gary! I think the addition of the extra image makes it so much better, it gives it more of a fine art feel in my opinion as the lighting under the pier is not what the eye would normally see as it is brighter with more of the shadow detail being visible, cracking shot(s)! 👍🏻
Cheers Andy 👍
G'day Gary. The HDR shot is good but to my mind the long shot of the pier is simply spectacular! Well done mate. Love your vids :)
Niiiiiiice!
Cheers Gary 👍👍
For a moment I thought I saw a wrecked drone under the pier 😀
Don't go there 😁😁 Cheers Bob 👍👍
Fantastic image and explanation of the process, by far my favorite watches on UA-cam...I'm really motivated to try this..big hurdle done thanks lol
Absolutely outstanding quality photos Gary! Love them with HDR and none HDR. Wish I could do it like ya.
Thanks as ever Gary. The addition of the HDR works for me. Also the last photo shot across the groynes is stunning.
Hi Gary, I think the addition of HDR works well on this image. I actually preferred the brighter version myself. Cheers Russ
👍👍👍
The more I watch your videos the more I love your work. Just starting out in photography, I have learned so much, thank you, I will keep watching
Yep, I think the HDR element of the composition adds an extra depth to the finished image and it works well. I do some HDR work, but hate the cartoon effects that some produce, but in this is an excellent example of how HDR can work to the photographers advantage, and it's an excellent image to boot.
That last wide shot ... 'stunnin..' .. hehe seriously very nice Gary :-)
Once again a fantastic video on fine art photography the way you detailed all the work and the end results are excellent. It is great watching how you approach the task and complete it with little fuss a total masterclass series.
Many thanks! Cheers Harry 👍👍
Beautiful vlog easy to follow 👍
Gary, for fine art photography there is no one else out there that i follow or take advice from. Your images & guidance are top draw my friend. I am a novice photographer but i am taking so much onboard from your videos & its helping me a great deal. This video like all others is amazing
Cheers Shaun. Consider yourself added to my Christmas card list 👍😀
What a fantastic video Gary. Loved seeing your thought process, you always make your ideas come across so clearly, and the final image looks amazing. The second shot was the icing on the cake for me - stunning mate 👍😊
Cheers Paul 👍👍
awesome .... clark ..
Love the final image Gary. I think people that still have reservations with HDR need to remember that it is simply a tool to increase detail precision and reduce noise in the shadows, and is a means-to-an-end for the 3+ stops shortfall between the dynamic range of our cameras and that of our visual system. We've all seen bad examples of HDR, such as when a post-sunset sky meets a daytime foreground, but if you can composite well and sell the effect as realistic then it's a valuable tool that yields cleaner, better-detailed images.
Loved the final result and am up for trying it! Looking forward to the ‘Members’ video showing the mechanics! Clive
Cheers Clive 👍👍
I wasn't sure I would like this, but it turns out, it worked really well, I like the juxtaposition of the water with all the detail lost to the long exposure, alongside the pier with all of the detail being available to the viewer.
I always look forward to your next videos, always inspirational and educational.
I Like It
Both images work well Gary and I actually strongly prefer the side shot you added at the end. Personally I go LE for water but not for clouds as prefer some texture in a sky but as you say...it's in the eye of the beholder. I have an ifootage TC7 tripod and really the only thing I don't like about it is the feet! I see Thomas Heaton has put spikes on his somehow. I asked the company I bought it from about this and they enquired of ifootage who said they could do it but wanted a small fortune to do the work....I passed! I try to use another tripod with spikes for sand locations now as had enough of it getting stuck between the metal and rubber feet on the TC7 - design flaw in my book. Never used the rock trick for shooting on sand, obviously not always available but will try to file it away for future use!
Cheers Steve 👍👍
Hello Gary. Thanks for another great video. As a photographer you're always learning. I am mainly a portrait photographer but I am looking to do more landscape and fine art. Your videos have really inspired me so thank you.
Really like the HDR finished photograph and will definitely try it. Unfortunately, I like the last image to the side of the Pier much more. But as you said, that's personal preference.
Nice and Yes, I very much like it. Small tip I picked up on youtube somewhere is to pack 3 old CDs and put your tripod on top of that on sandy soil or beaches. During a trip to Madeira I also have been experimenting with focus stacking and exposure blending: take a short exposure of a flower in the foreground and blend that with a long exposure of the seascape in the background also gives very nice results
This is something I must try and see how it turns out for me. I prefer the last image, the side on image.
love the last image. The gripe i have with the under pier shot is the fire damage. The yoof of today 😩
