Last week I visited Cleveleys Beach to take a few Landscape pictures with the intention of adding them to my website and sell them. Cleveleys is part of the Fylde Coast, North West UK coastline 10-minutes away from Blackpool.
I wanted to include Mary's Shell in the image. Mary's Shell is a public art piece.
The sea level was favourable as the tide was fully in which is exactly what I wanted. A full tide renders the lower part of the shell in the sea, just perfect. The weather wasn't particularly brilliant but as long as there are the clouds in the sky there is always a picture to be had!
I have also included my post-processing workflow to the video too. This way you can see how I create pictures that sell from start to finish.
COMMENTS always welcome
THANK YOU

Excellent description of fine art photography. It is exactly what I love to do and still learning how to do.
Thank you
Gary, It is always good to learn some new ways on how to process an image. Thanks, John
You're welcome John 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for this video. You are truly an inspiration.
Very kind, thank you
Your work is beautiful! Thank you ever so much for sharing your tips!!!
You're welcome Liz. Part 2 to this video is out next week.
Fine art is when you look at an image with indifference and the art work still connects.
Awesome work! And you make it look so simple!👍👍👍
Cheers Walter
Great video. It reinforced much of what I already knew but the use of the marquee to move one part of the image to another as an alternative to cloning and healing is a revelation as well as the transform tool used at the bottom edge instead of cropping out unwanted distractions and thus allowing you to maintain the chosen dimensions of the image is a revelation. Thank you for an informative lesson.
Gladys Perrier you’re welcome. Thank you
This is what I call Fine Art Photography, a great example and quite minimalist which I love. I just found and enjoyed your video about the pilgrims walk, which led me to this one. I really appreciate the insights into your processing method too. But I can’t resist pointing out something that drives me crazy these days; so many people misquoting that old proverb about the pudding. Correct saying is: “The proof of the pudding is in the eating”. 😊
Love the photos. Really appreciate the post processing tutorial. I've often wished you'd do one.
Oh, thank you 👍👍👍👍
"Art is anything you can get away with" - Andy Warhol
So true 👍
People like Andy Warhol never say those things when they are just starting out though, they wait until they have a large bank balance before saying controversial things.
Damien Hurst is living proof of that
Pretty sure it was Marshall McLuhan who said that....
Just wonderful, I been tryin to find out about "sell nature photos" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Cellaatty Unimaginable Command - (do a search on google )?
It is an awesome exclusive guide for discovering how to earn money from your photos without the headache. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got cool success with it.
Thoroughly enjoyable! I love your tips. Oh and yes, I agree with your definition of fine art photos. Thanks
thank you 👍
Loved that Gary. I picked up a few pointers on using Ps which I'll try in the near future. My preference was for the version of the main picture where there was the blue in the sky. Much the same as I liked the colour version of the wreck at Lytham. You might want to have a go at the riverside wrecks at Fleetwood. Quickest way to find them is to make for ASDA roundabout and across the other side of the road is a MacDonalds burger joint. Walk down that road keeping McD's to your right towards some new build housing on the other side of some lock gates. On the other side of the new builds is the river bank. The nearest wreck is just to the left hidden by a dune. The other wrecks are a couple of hundred yards to the right. Be sure to wear stout wellies or boots, its very slippy most of the time. Fortunately I had my Olympus Pro gear when I went face down in the mud. The camera washed up nicely, my jeans didn't. Enjoy! 😉
Thanks Gary. Some super simple Photoshop tricks that I would have never thought of? Maybe in 20 years time I'll be up to standard! Great vid.
Thank you Darcy 👍👍
Excellent tutorial, love the image
Thank you xx
You do some brilliant videos Gary, this has to be one of your best ever.
Thank you Steve, very kind 👍🏻
All I can say is that your tutorials- "follow along"; is really wonderful. Thanks so much. I just had to subscribe in order to support you and help me. Cheers.
Very kind, thank you
Great photography and some good tips on post processing, keep it coming Gary!
Thank you 👍👍
Very nicely done. 👍👍👍
Hi Gary, I'm a hugh fan of b&w imagery but in this case it's colour all the way for me. Both look fantastic. Great end result. Thanks a million for sharing.
I always get a good tip or three from your videos. Thanks again from Texas, Gary.
and thank you again Jeffrey 👍👍👍👍
I enjoyed your discussion and more importantly liked your creation of fine art Gary!
Cheers Carl
Really enjoyed that... love seeing how others edit. well done
Thank you Alastair 👍
brilliant gary, thanks for demonstrating that process with us, I've learnt something new and going to put that into practice myself as I am a lightroom user, I feel relieved that I thought I was the only one suffering from spots and marks all over the image after taking 10 stop images
It's not so much the 10-stopper, it was the F22 that shows the marks on the sensor. Cheers Jim 👍👍
Very interesting, I learned quite a bit. Very informative, will have to get busy and try some of these things out.
Well Gary that was brilliant in fine art on the shell 🐚 at blackpool spot on 😊
What a great video Gary. Thx a lot.
Cheers
Excellent video Gary.Very informative and beautiful images Thanks for sharing
Thank you as always Jim 👍👍
Great video Gary good tips along with shortcuts, you remind me of the late great Barrie Thomas when you are on your computer 👍
You're right Gary. I just Googled him, he is soooo handsome :)
Great video Gary. I have often wondered what constitutes fine art photography and your theory makes sense. I enjoy all your videos and I do prefer your style of (post processed) seascape to the "standard " versions. Thanks for all your videos. Please keep them coming! 👍👍👍
Thank you George. Very kind sir!
Your images and style of presentation are excellent. Very well done and thanks.
Thank you Tony. Very kind of you to say 👍👍
WOW thank you so much. I am a LR and PS user, and I see lots of videos. But the way you explain is just wonderful.
Looks great Gary, could we have more fine art please, I find myself leaning towards it more and more these days, I like this type of content especially with the post processing included 👍
More to come. Thank you 👍👍
Really well done, detailed and realistic situation, well processed with a minimum of steps.
I think defining fine art is very difficult. To me its conjures up high key images and lots of negative space, minimalist and often abstract. I preferred the colour image, blues like that give me a feeling of calm and summer. I really should put the effort in to learning photoshop I know I'm missing out on a lot of tools and techniques but its like being back at school again its a huge daunting program. Really enjoyed that one Gary, nice to see you editing
Thank you Peter, very kind as always 👍👍
I really love this channel. Thank you, sir.
Great to see the post processing Gary. I really enjoy your videos and better still, I learn something from each one. This one reminds me that I must start to learn to use the shortcut keys instead of the menus.
Thank you Mike. It'll save you tons of time in the future 👍
Thank You... You are a great teacher and an inspiration... I have never considered landscape photography something interesting before... but now I am very interested in learning much more... I have subscribed to your channel and I hope to peruse your other offerings before and those to come... Cheers...
Very kind, thank you 👍
Excellent!! Thank you!
Very kind again 👍👍
I've learned so much from you. Thanks!
You nailed it with this video, Gary, thanks !
I remember one of my professors at the university telling us: "art is subjective!" 😉
thanks for this great insight, hope this will help me to sell more :D
thanks for sharing this great content with us!
really enjoyed watching this
You're welcome, thank you 👍
Great video Gary. And what you said at the start of the video is exactly what fine art is in my experience. Enjoy the way you present your videos. Simple and understandable for everyone. There are some on youtube that can still learn from you. Thank you for this video my friend.
Really like the color version, thought it was Dali-esque.
Best compliment ever, thank you 👍👍
Really great video - inspiring and informative
From a new subscriber - Very well done!
Your definition is spot on, from my perspective! Cheers.
Really nice video, Gary. This is your first video that I have seen and it is such a beautiful video that I'm immediately subscribing without looking at your other videos first :)
You are awesome! Hoping to learn a great deal from you.
Comments like this just make all the hard work so worthwhile, thank you 👍👍
That's some of the most relaxing editing I've ever seen, with that music :)
Great pictures and great information thanks.
Thank you Dario 👍👍
Fantastic. Thank you!
Great tutorial. Keep up the good work!
Great work Gary. As a one time resident of Blackpool you capture that coast wonderfully. Although when I lived there this sculpture did not exist. Great example of fine art to me. Getting back into photography after 35+ years has been quite a learning curve. (I have some old slides taken of the 'Illuminations' in the late 70's when I lived on Redbank Road.) Your work is inspiring. Time for some ND filters for the Pacific Coast where I now live.
And it's comments like yours that make all the hard work so worthwhile. Thank you 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much I learned a lot from your video today.!!!
Very kind, thank you
That's a wonderful image and I would definitely consider it to be fine art. However, in regards to selling it you forgot the most important part...getting a signed release for the artwork that's in the image! I have an idea floating around inside my head for a similar image down on the Gulf Coast in Texas that has a sculpture that I'd love to do in infrared B&W. Great work btw!
Gary,
Great message!
When I've been asked, "What makes it art?" I have distilled this (from my own perspective) -- the distinction is intent. My intention is to manifest my vision as a fine art rendition. That is an easy answer to a complex concept. Pretty heady stuff...
I'm with you on the LR versus PS. I guess it's the "old school" in us (if a 20 year history for me, a pensioner, can be classified as old school). Having shot miles of actual film and printed mega square feet (meters?) of darkroom produced images since 1969, probably helps me with the more-or-less "throwback" processing terms and analogies in PS.
Your flow, uh ...flows nicely, and your sage tips are quite helpful. Basics, as you explain them, yield a great launching pad for any necessary slight embellishment. You're skills represent a fine combination of Svengalli and ol' Mike Angelo
And finally, that shite sensor flotsam. Damn those to hell for the scourge to clean living that they are... Too harsh?
Thank-You,
Mike
Good morning Gary, both images are great, personally I prefer the colour version. I agree that an image created from the photographer's imagination is "Art" and that some are more "fine" than others. Therefore I'm busy trying to move from art to fine art 😅. Cool video cheers buddy, Del
You're welcome as always Del xx
Good see there a order of how you should do it edit to get the best result. I've found that I'm going backwards and forward to the setting adjust to get it right. and now i see that they have to happen step by step.
Excellent...
Cheers Ken 👍👍
Many thanks 👍
Thank you Karl
Thank you Gary. that was brilliant
Great one Gary nice explanation of your take on fine art but come on!! I believe that the object is really only 5cm long and your playing with perspectives lol great to see you back cheers
lol I never thought of that :) Could have shot it in the bath and added a background too :) Thanks 👍👍
Fine job Gazza Lad. 👍
Regards,
Dazza. 🇬🇧
Thank you Dazza
Thank you for sharing your thought process. I can see the image in my head, but sometimes have difficulty translating it to the paper.
Know that feeling only too well :)
One of the most useful uploads on YT Gary thanks for sharing. I totally agree with you 100% on your interpretation on fine Art photography and your perception on what art is for that matter. Loved your image too, looks amazing. I would perhaps dedicate a lesser part of the image to the sky since the image is more about the structure and less about the sky but I totally get your perception and quite like it your way too. Needless to say I liked and subbed and also turned the bell notification icon to buzz.
Great stuff man thanks again and God bless.
Great video and tutorial, I’m seem to have a mental block with photoshop but keep trying it, lightroom I’m much better with, the shell in your image is on my to do list, hope it’s half as good as yours when I get it 👍
I'm sure it'll be just as good Mark. Would love to see it when you capture it 👍👍👍👍
Well done!
Thank you David 👍👍
Hi Gary, love the videos and really helping and inspiring me to do long exposure. Btw, what is that on the beach and how did it get there? Thanx again
Morning Gary. Excellent vlog, especially enjoy the post processing element - two new tricks learned there! And the image is very nice. Always considered photography as art not just documentary . My view then is do what you think works to delivery the story you have in mind. Looking forward to the sky replacement vlog!
Thank you Jonathan 👍👍
Hello Gary, very nice image. I also like the documentary style photograph of the same image you took with all the detail. I enjoy the entertaining and educational parts of all your presentations. Thanks for being here sharing your channel. One question, which version of Photoshop do you use?
Cheers, Gino Rigucci.
Thank you Gino, very kind. PS CC is the version
That was helpful.
Cheers Phil 👍
Tues: I prefer the B&W. Wed: I prefer the colour. Thurs: Which do I prefer...ask me tomorrow.
lol, Thank you Ian. B&W or Colour? 😁😁
Thank you Gary. I picked up a few wee gems of tips in your post processing workflow. That's a thumbs up and sub from me 👍
Oh, that's great. Hope you enjoy my future content 👍👍
> fine art
> sellable
Ouuff. As an arts major, this hurt me deeply. Chairs are sellable, that doesn't make them Fine Art.
Nice one Gary and super shot, personally I like the colour one best. Nice to see the post processing 👍
Ian Livermore cheers Ian 👍🏻
I like the color version too. It reminds me of an alien artifact or something.
Ridiculous! Everyone knows fine art photography is black and white tsk some people.
@@woody1380 everyone is entitled to an opinion. Have an awesome day buddy!
@@ianlivermore2981 twas a joke buddy, having a pole at those that would balk at colour in art photography
Thanks for the nice vid! Oh yes, the color one is to my taste nicer by far!
Hello Gary! Good work! I really like the fine-art process from taking picture to the final result. Really creative. The most unassuming picture can be with postprod. as well it can be. These days I do not paint in conjunction with the Opacity, I work only with Flow and usually set to 6% (fine-tuning). In the picture you did now that was super nice, I had put on a little bit of vignetting. I have Nik collection installed and very found of it. Greetings from me and Sweden.
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Greeting back at you from the UK 👍
Fine art is art created solely for its aesthetic value. It's a derivation of the French word "fin" for end - i.e. art as an end in itself
Totally agree 👍 Cheers
amazing video. thank you for sharing
What I do I call it photo art . It’s simply my personal spin on a photo changing it by editing .
I don’t care necessarily to keep it minimal. It depends on the photo .
I’m more inclined to go for a dramatic style . I much prefer photo shop too and not into Lightroom .
Agree totally. Great analogy. Thank you for watching 👍👍
Well done Gary. I really enjoy working in ACR, but am still hesitant to jump into photoshop with both feet. I know there are many lists out there for PS shortcuts, but can you recommend any one list over the rest?
Thank you. This is the official one from Adobe... helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/help/attachments/PhotoshopCC-KBSC.pdf
You're much better off just looking for the shortcuts when you realise you keep repeating yourself doing something. I hope that makes sense?
I would just like to say that I am sure you will be able to sell this image It was of very high quality . I love the way you had the vision for what you wanted and that you were able to create that in post. For me personaly I do not like to see a flat sea because I think it makes it look soulless it is a bit like taking a portrait of someone and them haveing no expression! However like you say when it comes to Art we all like different and that is what makes Art and Photography so exciting. It would be really boring if we all liked the same thing it would make for no variation :D I am only an amateur and would not have the skills in post to create something in the way you can so I found this interesting to watch. Great Vlog Gary thanks for sharing :D Teddy
Thank you, Teddy. Totally agree about the soulless feel to the image, but like you and I both agree with, It's art and therefore very subjective. Always good for a debate though :)
When did the Sea get a soul? 😉
I do agree with what I think you’re trying to say. And that is that the sea always has movement. Which I agree with. I’ve never seen totally absolute dead calm seas especially near the shore.
I actually like your image and the way you have done the edit.
BLADE4 Productions indeed, what is a ‘soul’ anyway?
Very nice, I prefer the colour version; which I think would look pretty jaw dropping on metallic print as the colours look pretty metallic in my eyes already. Would you share what you did with the colour on that as most of the video was on the B&W postprocessing.
It's only the white balance that would make the difference. I just keep the slight blue hue to the image. Thank you
Thanks a lot Gary for this very good and informative video! Your landscape photography is really great!!! Today a have a special question for you: You never mentioned problems with hot pixels. I'm using a Sony A7rii and have, depending on the outside temperature, big problems. Maybe Canon doesn't have this problem? If not, how do you deal with it?
Buy Canon :) nooooo just joking. I don't really have that as an issue unless I'm shooting a very long exposure with high ISO's. It'll just have to be something you deal with in post-production. Probably not the answer you were looking for but that's it, sorry!
Gary Gough Thanks Gary for you answer! Some people are saying that Sony and Nikon have better sensors than Canon - in terms of dynamic range. The users of both companies have to deal with hot pixel (I know that from many Sony and Nikon users). Canon has here a very big advantage, because no hot pixel. In this regard, your answer is actually not really a joke - it depends on what one wants to photograph. :)) Thanks again!
helpful!
Cheers
Hiya Gary I know it's bit after the event but do you remember who did the soundtrack for this ? Its ok don't worry I found it Summer Feelings by Orda Norte
I don't have a problem with calling this art but I do have a problem calling it photography.
A photograph is a single moment taken in time captured in camera without the dramatic changes made it photoshop as per this video. I believe it is very misleading and should instead be marketed as a photo montage, composite, illustration etc. Not a photograph.
In Australia if an image has been doctored in say a newspaper it must not be described as a photo.
Anyway, that's my two cents!
Btw. I've just subscribed 😊
Nicely done but I must admit I preferred the colour version
Thank you. Mose people prefer the colour one :)
Awesome video Gary. Love the simplicity of the image which I feel is the art of "Fine Art photography" Great to see the whole process as well from taking the image to the finished product, magic stuff. Personally, I preferred the colour image, it just seems to add a bit more dimension to the image. Thanks for sharing!!
FINALLY a channel from an experienced guy who does realistic videos that isnt too much click bait ( I would love to see how to sell your images. What channels you put them on etc, and how you price them. You mentioned you put them on your website, but how do you get people over there?)
No fancy pansy guys with over enthusiastic "WHATS UP GUYS!!!" bunch of nonsense.
Thank you John, very kind of you to say. I'll be making a follow up video with the some of the questions you raised
@@GaryGough that's nice of you. I subscribed!
I recently got myself a Sony a7iii and a lens for cheapo.
I used to have an old nikon d60, and I have to say it's way more fun now. The images I get is just amazing compared to the old nikon. So much information from the full frame.
Still have tons of practice I need, but I would love to able to sell a lucky shot if I make one. Even it's a dollar or 10 I don't mind. But the feeling that someone would pay something for my photos would be amazing :)
Keep up the high quality videos.
So far I like them a lot.
Been doing this for twenty five years and still love it when someone inspires me. Great video, nicely put together and I personally love the image. Thanks for posting Gary.
Cheers Tom, thank you 👍
I don't care for Lightroom either. But I do like menus. That's a matter of personal preference, not something others must always do.
Two things: (1) art isn't about selling anything, it's about making art and (2) photographers don't "take" pictures, they make them; they create pictures. Look up the definition of the word "take." It won't say anything about making or creating anything. To take is to acquire, seize, steal, appropriate, etc. Art isn't taken (unless you're an art thief), it's created.
It's all about "definition" and "subjectivity". I totally understand and appreciate your comments. In fact, I agree with just about all of them. But let's look at my picture. Did I not create it? Obviously, I'm not talking about the shell per se! I'm talking about the picture as a whole. If I gave you a camera and asked you to photograph the shell, unless you knew exactly what you were doing with your equipment you would not have come anywhere near my picture! Assuming you had the foresight to imagine the picture in the first place. I would clarify this as art. Happy for you to disagree though.
Excellent stuff as usual, Gary.. Enjoyed your tutorial in PS, so keep em coming. Im going to have to try this out..
Thank you Roger 👍👍
Its a bit like saying, is the metal structure on the beach, fly tipping or is it art.
A question many people have probably asked :)
Great points and tips Gary, Many Thanks
"Don't overprocess your work".
Try explaining that to Photo Serge!
lol I know what you mean :) Thank you
To guarantee thousands of Instagram Favorites and Likes- Every slider maxed out to the right. Especially Clarity and Contrast.
That is so true. It's really annoying
Clarity - the sticking plaster for bad photography
@@anewcareerinanewtown I agree Bro!
In these days of acronyms I must say I enjoyed your take on FART Photography. Keep it up. :-)
lol Thank you
Definitely it is piece of art. Really love it. I'm on site fine art America.. And the same name is like here. So i would really appreciate if you take a look and tel me am I on right path for this kind of photography
Nice job Gary
Cheers David. BTW, I'll be getting a van soon so I'll be able to pop down for that meet-up 👍👍
Gary Gough that would be great
Great subject matter Gary... I agree to disagree, lol. There is a " fine line ", pun intended to what constitutes " fine art " photography. I tend to agree on your take of it. Often times when I was selling my prints under the WGF Studio53 name when filing the prints into different categories, sometimes the decision was difficult on which category to file it under. Photography imo really is another form of art in either case, whether I choose to leave it all natural or make post processing changes such as your example in the video is a good example on how it becomes fine art.
You have become a guru in PS & move around in there effortlessly! I for one use LR5 ( I own it ) primarily because I REFUSE to buy the Adobe Cloud service!
I am not a fan of Lee filters because of all the blue, versus a true neutral filter, however, the colorized version of the old broken culvert works for me over the B/W... Very well done my friend... :-)
Thank you as always William. I wondered where you were going when you said, agree to disagree. Thought I was in for a roasting :) Thank you as always 👍👍👍👍
