  • In this video, I offer easy-to-follow camera setups for photographing Puffins and Birds in Flight. Beginner and advanced camera setups.
It's that time of year again when Puffins feed their Pufflings, creating a beautiful spectacle for photographers.
Watching Puffins, with their vibrant summer orange beaks darting through the sky, is an incredible sight and a fantastic subject for photography.
Every June and July, Puffins return to land to nest and raise their single chick. It's no small task: their young, better known as Pufflings, are very demanding. From the moment they hatch, their appetite is insatiable, requiring around 25 meals daily.
We have the demanding chicks to thank for the constant activity. Caring for their young keeps Puffins continuously flying between their nests and feeding areas. If you visit places like the Farne Islands (as shown in the video), the concentration of birds ensures that the skies are always filled with these fascinating creatures.
Puffins fly at over 50mph. Because of this, they're challenging to photograph. However, if you follow my simple instructions on how to photograph them, I guarantee your hit rate will be much better
I hope you like the video.

Hello Gary, i´m rom Germany and had been to Farne Islands in August 2015. I really enjoyed it. If someone asks me to accompanish him, i would say yes in the next 5 seconds. Thousands of puffins on the first island, many seals during shipping to the second island and many see swallows on the second island (hard to photograph, their eye has to have a light spot otherwise they look boring and dead). The tour to both (!) islands had been great fun. You showed these opportunities in your video and that´s why i like it.

    Absolutely brilliant video Gary.
You are the master when it comes to doing this.
You always explain everything in simple terms and it works.
    Stunning image's as usual.
Look forward to the next one.

Just treated myself to a 150/600mm for wildlife, whilst I agree there is no substitute for getting closer to the subject and using shorter focal lengths, the 600mm is incredible. Only had one session with it so far and got some fabulous shots of a Heron in flight coming straight at me, would never have been possible in the circumstances with a 200mm (Herons can spot you a mile away) I have some beautiful images of Swans and Cygnets at 200mm but I was only 10 feet from them 😉 thanks for the tips on settings Gary, very useful 👍👌

600mm is a cracking lens. I meant to say that the 600mm was OTT simply because you can pretty much touch the Puffins on the island. Cheers 👍👍

Great video but you're a day too late Gary 😂. I went to Bempton in Yorkshire yesterday and could have done with watching this video two days ago 😢. Seriously now, it's brilliant! Cheers!

I wish this video was out a few years ago. I visited Skomer Island, West Wales and, thankfully had similar settings. Trying to take individual shots was a no no. They were just too fast. I ended up going for a set focus point, aimed at a puffin in flight, and as it came into focus, used the spray and prey method. I managed a few nice shots that way. Keep the videos coming Gary. Some great ideas and advice.

My wife got excited when I told her where you were during this video. She's from Beadnell, just a stone's throw from Seahouses. She hasn't been back there for quite a few years.

@12:29 that image of the Arctic Tern in flight is stunning.
Just a pity they like to divebomb you though, their beaks are bloody sharp!

Fantastic images Gary! I also find the smaller the bird, the higher the shutter speed for BIF. I hope you are enjoying your trip and getting some great shots with your Z8!

Can’t see why you think 600mm is overkill. Surely necessary. Puffins aren’t that big and of course it depends on how close you can physically get to them. 👍📸

At the Farne Islands you can practically touch them 😁 600mm can never be overkill, I just dodn’t want new photographers to assume they need a huge expensive lens 👍👍

Every now and again Gary you provide a brief masterclass in photography in a particular genre and are quite open regarding your own personal technique. The content was superb as always. BTW I wish my budget could stretch to a Z8😁. Thank you.

Thank you Gary I find your videos very helpful. I’m going to the Isle of May in the next few weeks and would like to know if I should take a tripod or shoot hand held? I have a 150-600mm lens for my Nikon SLR.

No zoom when I visited Farne, but still got decent images - the biggest problems were not treading on the birds as they nest everywhere. Warning: Get used to being pooped on.

Hi Gary - what 'metering mode' should I use? I've tried birds in flight before, but either the sky is completely blown out, or the bird is under exposed..
