Sony Xperia 1 VI Review // Sony’s Best Phone Yet!

- This is my review of the new Sony Xperia 1 VI with camera samples. I love the Sony Xperia 1 VI more than I expected to, even wiith the changes to the screen. The biggest tragedy of this phone is that it isn't available in the United States unless you import it, which is not cool. However, the Sony Xperia 1 VI is my favorite phone so far in 2024!
5G Instructions:
Use Phone Dialer and Enter This Code + Hit Dial: ##276633683782#
It immediately opens the service menu where you can select Phone info 4. Toggle DSDS off, wait a few seconds, toggle it back on. 5. Change '5G/LTE/WCMA/GCMA' to just '5G/LTE' and hopefully you get 5G!

The code is "asterisk # asterisk # 4636 # asterisk # asterisk" (had to type out the word asterisk because this forum will not record it when typed) choose "Phone information" toggle off/on DSDS. You can leave it off if you do not use TWO SIMS at the same time. Mine has NO "5G/LTE" option but defaults to "NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA"
I have no issues with 5G in the city. However, if you live in the middle of nowhere, or travel long distances away from city limits, then you may have connection issues in the USA.
Because of the display issues Adam. The most I pay for that phone is $200 tax included take it or leave it.
But... Will this setting revert after a reboot causing you to need to remember and do it every reboot??
I got a US Version Xperia 1 V for use in Canada but somehow I cannot get 5G reception even though my plan supports it and the phone is set to pick up 5G. Do you know if this code will fix it?
@@anthonyng1670 You can try it. There is no harm in trying. You can turn off DSDS whenever you want and turn it back on whenever you want. It is only if you "need" Dual Sim activation. Most people use only one Sim at a time.
I love my Xperia 1 V. I am thinking of upgrading just to support Sony. I want them to keep making these phones as it's my favorite device I've ever used.
did u notice the black crush display issue on xperia 1 v?
What's this @@Viewer13128
The only thing Sony phones lack is marketing. And that's insame because if you look at what Sony can do with Playstation. All Xperia need is some kickass commercials and advertising and they could sell a lot more phones.
2:44 this is me!.. I love my Xperia VI.. thanks for the awesome review!
Very cool. Glad to hear it. And thanks for watching.
I am currently using one Xperia 5 IV and one Xperia 1 V, both work great for me. They are absolute fun to use for video and photography. So fun- I know I have something special in my hand, and simply igored other phones. Sony Xperias are for me.
Will get 1 VI soon, yes I will use all three phones at the same time, one for phone call, others for photo/video.
Very well said! 👏🏻🔥💪🏻
I've been using this phone for over a month now and I LOVE IT as you do! 🥰😍❤️🔥
Battery life and Telephoto Macro Mode are Insane features of this Beast! 🥰😍❤️🔥
Got my 1V last month and I'm still loving it. Going to keep it forever, lol.
I switched from samsung. And as a phone samsung is better and also camera on auto but this screen, sound and manual camera settings sony wins. So there are pros and cons
That's awesome! I'm glad you're enjoying that so much.
I love it! Thank you
The pictures are absolutely beautiful ❤️ im liking the natural colors I wish this phone was more affordable it's freaking awesome!
Thank you! Glad you liked them.
yeah, i wish this phone was just 1000 dollars, and it was available in the US readily
Thanks for the review .. have to say I’m one of the doubters even having used the phone for one week . The lack of the music haptics really was a disappointment also the Home Screen doesn’t rotate !! Even the pixels do that . The 4k downgrade I can live with due to the increased battery life ( let’s face it that’s what initially makes the phone worth so it’s kind of important) . Going back to the music haptics , isn’t there a software fix to make them reappear? The only thing I hated from 1v from the 1iv was the omission of the notification light .. that could have made a reappearance on the 1vi but alas no . Despite all of that I am returning my pixel 8 pro and reordering the Sony 1vi … ( the 1v is no longer being sold by my carrier) . I will learn to love the 1vi , begrudgingly at first , but it’s a Sony and we have to be thankful they are still making top quality phones .
BTW you are one of my go to videos on YT . Always informative .. keep up the good work on here :)
I bought one and it should arrive tomorrow!
Using this phone since it launched in Europe some months ago and absolutely love it.
It's like all the specs I ever wanted into one phone.
- the FPS on the side is perfect for me and I prefer it over on screen FPS.
- the Battery life is just insane
- ditching the "4k on spec" to a 1080p display was exactly the right choice, I don't see the difference to the models before
- of course headphone jack + SD Card was the main reason to get this phone
- the new aspect ratio is more useful in everyday life
- I ADORE the bezels, having no punchhole is the way to do it and the speakers are the one of the best I've ever heard
- photo-wise, it's a huge improvement for me, I use the zoom a lot, the auto mode works better, bokeh is ace, just perfect for my use cases
This phone is just perfect!
i was curious what your opinion on the new design and screen were. Glad to hear it brother.
Fantastic review! Thank you for the information! Thumbs up 👍
Thanks for watching!
I do in fact love the micro SD option on this phone and Sony has improved it but it's still baffles me that smartphone manufacturers are not implementing 1 TB as the base and including a higher option for a 2 TB considering doing 4K and 8K video recording as well as 4K and 8K video editing.
Sony phones has always been different and awesome to use. I have had the first Sony Xperia S from 2012 and since then The Sony Xperia Z2, Z5 compact, XZ, XZ3 and Xperia 1. After these phones I have been with Samsung, but to be honest i will always be a Xperia fan boy. I am surely going to buy the Sony Xperia 1 VI, to get a great user experience and to support Sony in keep making Xperia Phones. Sony did many years prior shut down their laptop brand VAIO, and I dont want the same fate for the XPERIA brand
Man I am from the UK England I love listening to you you say it how it is and you are quite funny to respect.. on the serious side Sony needs to sell it over there in America because look at Motorola they have had there bad years of selling there phone's but they are trying to promote there selling point to Samsung and getting there phone's out there Sony needs to do better if you want to sell and promote your products go out there and advertise it they need to keep trying and just do it I have the Sony 1 mark 4 and the Sony 1 mark 6 and I love them as what you said it's a brilliant peace of kit and a lovely looking phone Sony can do it I believe in Sony always will peace my brother for a excellent video love it 👍👍
Hello, friend. Cheers from Brazil. So, sometimes I get the impression that tech reviewers squeeze the technical data and force digital zooms that nobody will use to show improvements that, in some cases, won't be appreciated, just to assert that the Xperia isn't worth it. But I feel that the balance makes it a great device for daily use. The difference in screen density for battery and performance gain is an example. It could be a bit denser, but it doesn't seem bad because of that, given the brightness and great color science. The telephoto, which is the main target of criticism, when used only in optical zoom, as I understand it should really be used, seems quite acceptable to me. Superior ergonomics compared to others, SD, flatscreen, etc. It seems like a great device for everyday use to me. Sometimes, to achieve a superior aspect, it costs too much in other areas, such as heating, consumption, etc. So, I think balance defines the Xperia. The only problem is the price, which doesn't match the embedded technology. On sale, it seems like a great choice if you can get with some discount.
I bought the crimson model XQ-EC72 and it works on AT&T just like T-Mobile. Had to use this code to turn on 5G. I don't ever make calls so I can't vouch for service. I really miss the aspect ratio of the Mark V, like a lot. The unified camera is nice but low light photos are no where near my Pixel, which might be a deal breaker for me. Also, I don't think this model has eSIM, which is disappointing because I travel a lot. But the phone is sexy! Got mine off Amazon for a touch more than you paid. Took a couple weeks from a third party seller.
Is it dual sim? I've seen dual sim on ebay for €1100.
@@MiGames3 Yes it is dual sim. Only certain "versions" are also eSIM capable.
I really appreciate your comment. I haven't been able to find anyone talking about AT&T compatibility. I have mine arriving in a couple of days, so we'll see how I feel about it. I got it on
Amazon, and there's a 30 day return window; I figured it's easily worth it to try it out for a couple of weeks, at least. I have the Pixel 8 Pro, and it's been so amazing, but I want something different. I don't expect the camera to be the best I've ever seen. I just hope the auto is good, and I can use the pro mode for other situations to mess around. Mainly excited about the overall design and the textured back. It sounds silly, but I'm really getting tired of glass slab phones that care more about the look than the feel. Plus it's nice to have expandable memory.
wanna see a bug that Sony hasn't fixed since the first xperia?
set double tap to wake on, prevent accidental operations on. lock the dislay and the phone. then cover the proximity sensor with something and double tap the screen, press ok if the "prevent accidental operations..." pops on screen and then drag down with the finger until the quick settings become accessible and touchable. yes, this happens in the pocket. I often get my 1 iv out of the pocket with the screen on, heated up, drained battery, in airplane mode or with bluetooth off, in emergency calls menu etc. it's horrible. but it doesn't end here.
activate the AOD as always on and set off the double tap to wake. you will see that double tap to wake still works if the AOD in always on.
I know I will miss the LED notification light. Currently holding onto my 1 IV
Received the July 1st, 2024 Security Update early this morning! So far it seems that Sony is on the ball! Still waiting on the Google Play system update but that is on Google, not Sony...as far as I understand things.
I'm a sony fan but they should retain the following or improved.
•Pro Apps (This is the DNA of Sony)
•21:9 Display Ratio
•Notification Light
•Dynamic Vibration Haptics
•1440p Display Instead of 4k
•LIDAR Instead of iToF
•RGBC - IR
•Large Vapor Chamber like the first Xperia Pro
•70mm - 150mm Telephoto
•Powerful Flash
you know what your vids are great one of the only creators loving Sony phones if it wasn't for connectivity issues I would buy it but I'm probably just going to go for 1v rather than 1vi
Thank you very much.
I am in the USA and have not had any connectivity issues. Get the one designed for your country and you will be fine.
@@josephseman5333 there isn’t one for the USA. lol.
@@TechOdyssey Never said there was! I said they are available in the USA. Big difference. SHeesh, I'm trying to support you but OK I will refrain from commenting and watching your amateur videos! Bye-Bye
@@josephseman5333 I’m just saying that the guy said he’s worried about connectivity issues and you told him to get the one for his country. There doesn’t exist one for his country and they aren’t available in the U.S. you have to get one third party and they aren’t officially supported here. I’m glad you’re not having connectivity issues though. No need to get butt hurt.
I have Att and Xperia VI works fine after we put different IMEI number in Att system
Works for 4G and I am going to try the code now so hopefully I get 5G
The code did not work
People still saying 1 V is better...well as a both model user,
that's what I feel for the 1 V: Small screen, over compressed image, lack contrast, lack of color depth, side cut...
What I feel for the 1 VI: Clearer image, more reality color, high contrast, everything bigger, true white balance, cleaner screen...
And feels like back to year of Z or XZP series, very nostalgia. The FHD+ didn't affect too much, it's clearer than 1 V with normal distance between eyes, only you can notice pixels when your eyes keep near in 5 cm of phone but you would probably blind if you watch like that.
pictures look good, very natural 👍😊
How is the telephoto camera i have heard negative reviews about it please clarify...
I like it. I took great pictures with it. All of the geese pictures in my video are taken at 7.1x zoom
Love sony❤
SONY phones are Superb ..The only thing still holding sony back and will never be able to make me stick to Sony phones as my main phone for a year . The camera software is the issue and I don't mean the pro and manual...I mean the automatic. Most people want to bring out their phone, point focus and shoot and get a pleasing result however it is done AI and let the option for the natural look they are known for be the pro and manual section
That was changed on the Mark 6
Keep making great vids
Thanks, will do!
It should be a ring strap with this case, put it on the case to deferintiate up or down)
lol Sony fanboys have been going on for years about 4k display, and now Sony confirmed that it is virtually impossible to see, I bet some of the head are exploding now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Im in the uk im in the market for a new phone im sort of bored of Samsung apple and looking for something ive never tried before the screen was putting me off with the downgrade but yourself and others say its a brilliant screen some other UA-camr said it was better than 24 ultra and 15 max for watching movies on, i think i might just bite the bullet and try it for myself.
Do it. I got mine from Very on Friday. I'm loving it. The battery is good. Sound is good. Sounds better in my car than my S20 FE. I like the side fingerprint scanner. And it's been 2 days and I'm glad I purchased.
I'm Sony user and I have owned this phone for 1 month already which I love it Sony Xperia 1 Vi screen resolution if they do exactly like apple Sony Xperia 1vi pro with 4k screen so don't complain 😂😆
I thought the skin tones at night looked too yellow. Otherwise, all others were good.
Xperia 1 VI is the only android phone that I like, it's very high quality, Samsung models are quite far behind, because Samasung is more after quantity than quality, still, unfortunately. And the Xperia 1 VI hasn't even been updated yet, there was supposed to be an update in the fall! This is my description, knowledge and experience, research at this time and it doesn't have to be suitable for others!
Not considering the AI hype, which would you choose - Pixel 9 Pro or Xperia 1 VI?
It's good to know that the 1 VI doesn't have overheating issues Aside from the 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security, that would be the gripe that I have for the price its asking. Still gonna get it, just need to work and save up for it, while living with my OnePlus 8 Pro with a green line in the middle 😅
I thought I couldn't get this in the USA? Hmm. Maybe I'll do more research, if any carriers here in the USA work?
I'm a big audio guy, so the 3.5mm jack is a huge win.
I just said my experience with it working on T-Mobile.
@@TechOdyssey missed that. Thanks
16:9 was the perfect aspect ratio until lg and scamsung ruined it
Case is great but do have the issue you mentioned on the video. Wired earphones are very good and power is there
Thank you for the review and answering all the questions I had previously posted.
Is the flashlight brighter than that of 1 V?
Flashlight is definitely much better.
It feels like 4K to me
Previous models were also best when they were launched. When a new model appears then previous models are average. 😅
Great video 👍👍does this Sony work in United States running 5g ?? Thanks I have AT&T carrier
I just got it and i have to say its way different than other phones i used, i became from an iphone 13 mini, before pixel 7 pro and now this i jist have a concern but not at all, camera is beast i think it needs some updates to perfectionize the camera but i can say i miss tue iphone camera behaviour besides that as you say its very good
The US variant of the Xperia 1 VI has turned up in Bluetooth documentation. The smartphone is given the model number XQ-EC64.
I wonder if Sony changed their minds?
I haven’t seen or heard anything about this. But that would be great
Well done SONY, but I need much smaller phone with same performance :)
Wait for Xperia 5 then
excellent photos 👌
Thank you so much 😀
Hey, what about the software part of the phone? have you seen any bugs from Sony? like visual bugs in Xperia UI, animation stutters, scrolling issues with adaptive refresh rate, etc?
I'm based in Japan and I'm heavily considering this phone, but many reddit users complain about software bugs and Sony not fixing them (or fixing them after months, years…)
waiting for next year to decide upgrade to VI or VII
Fair enough!
I have this phone and only thing I don't like is camera app. Yes photos are better, but Photo Pro and Video Pro are better for me. Everything else is better on this phone.
i wish the display ratio was reduced even a little bit more to 2:1, i always thought 2:1 was the sweet spot like with the lg g6 and don't like the super-tall displays that dominate the market today
I got the Xperia 1 V back in November 2023 and been loving it. Compared to the Xperia 1 VI...
1. How much better is the battery life?
2. How much better are the speakers?
3. Do you thing the 3 year update will carry over the Xperia 1 V?
I had the 1 mark 3 and now the 1 mark 6 and the battery life on this phone is the absolute best I have had on any phone - bar none!
@@josephseman5333Hi, thanks for sharing.
The Xperia 1 III has a 4500mah battery and the Xperia 1 VI has a 5000 mah, so Im glad your getting a big battery life difference.
I am more curious on the Xperia V and VI difference since both has a 5000mah battery 🤔
The battery can last 2½days. Its cool to have the zoom but lacks software to process it. Screen brightness are really god and some better than 1V. Its a better xperia but thats about it. As a phone its really good but overpriced.
if it had band 41 it would be an instant sell for me, I am still going to try it, but I am ready to refund it on amazon if the connection is bad, I live in parts of Wisconsin that don't have much 5g outside of band 41, so I am going to give it a whirl for 2 weeks and see how it is, if this one falls through I guess I will get the ROG phone 8 pro because I am just looking for a flagship phone with a 3.5mm jack
Is the Mark V better in the USA and Canada for the connectivity?
Yes 100%
I doubt youre actually connecting to 5g bands by a simple toggle of DSDS, like previous xperias, it would say you are on the status bar but never connect to actual 5g bands.
There are 3rd party apps that you can use to determine whether you are or not.
Can I use any of these on Verizon
All this and it isn't offered in USA!
Sadly no
I'm a huge Sony fan i have a number of products, I wanted to love the phone but it feels like a budget phone for a premium price
I don’t get that feeling at all
@@TechOdyssey I'm thinking of buying 1vi only because my current phone doesn't get security updates anymore. Is it really worth upgrading from an Xperia 1 ii? My phone still works as well as it can, but the last support was in June 2022😅 I'm not really keen on upgrading to a new one as mine still works fine.
Better display brightness , better battery life , better heat management , faster processor and ram , better camera. @@tibroMc
More than likely it would work on AT&T, but I'd love to see if it works on Verizon, especially with 5G. I almost want to send you a couple of prepaid SIMs to see if it works on both networks. This would be a game changer for me because I was waiting for this to come out, only to be disappointed to find out it's not available in the states. I really want to get off of using Samsung. I don't like Apple, and not sure about the new Google one. There's less options here in the states and it seems like the manufacturer list for the US is dwindling down to where it's just going to be Samsung and Apple one of these days.
OnePlus 12 is the phone of the year. And I have the s24+ and P8P. Absolutely no areas of the 12 will leave you wanting more.
And I use Verizon prepaid and the 12 gets 5G very well.
Likely it will work on LTE but more likely than not on 5G due to their whitelisting policy for 5G
ATT only allows whitelisted phones it won't work. I went through this with them a few times with some BlackView phones that were fully compatible with the network/bands but we're knocked off the network as soon as it was detected.
@@firworks (sigh) So they're just like Spectum in that regard. I used to work for Spectrum Mobile back in the day, and they did the same thing. Most unlocked phones would work. Once the network caught up with it, the phone was deactivated. That was a major complaint. I never knew if it was because it was a Verizon thing or a Spectrum thing because of certain contracts such as the customer must have Spectrum Internet too just to get cell service. This was so people don't use the Verizon network as much with data.
I miss the 21:9 aspect ratio

Had this phone for a week now. Loving it so far however, and I don't know if this is universal for all phone cameras but these fake bokeh shots are really really bad. Sony cameras and lenses are of high standard, but this is a complete let down and almost an oversight from my POV obviously as I'd expect better from Sony. If only the bokeh wasn't so exaggerated, its camera would be perfect.
You can use the main lens to shoot and not activate bokeh mode . Its bokeh is good enough.
Adam, This phone is a treat? Really? I sold mark V to replace with mark VI and it was really disappointing. System had weird lag which was annoying while typing on keyboard, video quality comparing to mark V was much worse. Photos were also better on mark V...i so much regret that i decided to trade in mark V. At the end returned mark Vi as for that money it was to risky to keep it and hoping sony will fix it. I dont know maybe I had different phone in my hand 😂 from positives it was only battery life and more comfortable to work with aspect ratio, otherwise Mark V is making things better, at least before updates...
Would you characterize this phone as "best phone you shouldn't buy"?
I wouldn’t. I bought it. For people that care and like Sony I think it’s an investment that could be worth it. But it’s a limited subset of folks here in the states.
Thanks from western Oregon! Potato pancakes and fried eggs for breakfast. Know you were wondering!
People were roasting the s23 + because of 1080p. Yet when it comes to this phone, 1080p is fine. Makes no sense. Kinda hypocritical.
I’ve been complaining about it forever. Just because I say it looks better than I expected after seeing it is not the same thing. Get your head straight and listen before you start whining. I even made 2-3 videos talking about the change and how I wasn’t happy about it.
Because the 1080p makes no difference. I can still watch my shows. I'm watching this video perfectly fine on the phone now. The screen even gives better battery life. It's fine because we get the reasoning.
Ye s23 ultra says otherwise
There are just phones, life is beautiful 😊
Probably cause before it was 4K then to 1080p. People are complaining but with battery life like that wtf cares. Cry more.
Does anyone know if the 5g code will work with AT&T?
Did not work with me for some reason
I can not get 5G
Honestly nothing beats the 4k screen and the 21.9 aspect ratio
Not available in the US? I see it on Amazon right now
3rd party sellers not Amazon
@@TheAgentAssassin I guess it depends on your city then. I'm in Jersey and it's sold by Sony itself, on Amazon.
Are you able to connect to a t- mobile , at&t, or Verizon with that phone? And where can I go to purchase it?
Watch the video
tengo el 1V y amo la camara principal pero odio el telefoto
Its not available in the US?
Nope. Sadly
@@TechOdyssey This statement that it is NOT available in the USA is NOT TRUE! It has limited cell BANDS that we might like in the USA, and Sony is NOT officially endorsing it for the USA but during setup US English was at the top of the list for languages. I purchased mine on Amazon (the US site) and it was the 512GB version and shipped from Florida! So YES it is available in the USA!
I have both Xperia 1 VI and Oppo Find X7 Ultra and I clearly see that Oppo is a superior device in too damn many ways : better materials / build (Xperia feels cheap, plasticky), better mobile reception, better screen and speakers, better cameras ( especially zoom and macro), better price and software support. I'm sorry but Sony is just miles behind the competition. China won!
To you glass feels like plastic?
YOUR WIFE LOOKS LIKE BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD
Its overpriced. I hav one and theres a lot to like but its no flagship and the software for photos are better in other brands with same sensors. In all an honnest rewieu.
You should talk about the scrolling lag it's real problem and I sold mine because of that
I don’t notice any scrolling lag
Nice phone , but let's be honest it's just not worth that money. It is overpriced by at least 30%.
First of all NOBODY is actually paying full price. Second of all the price is nearly the SAME or lower than many other flagships with fewer features. People are so mislead.
