Yongnuo 35mm f/1.4 DF UWM lens review with samples (Full-frame & APS-C)

- This is Chinese company Yongnuo's first lens with an autofocus motor, and I personally love the 35mm focal length. Its price sure undercuts the competition - let's see if its quality can keep up.

I don’t know why, but every time I click on your video, I already click on like within the first 5 seconds because I know that no matter what lens it is, your reviews would be really good.
Christopher, I just wanted to say I've been watching your videos for the past few months now, having gone from an enthusiast level of gear to a semi-pro one, and I've yet to have been steered wrong by anything you've reviewed and I happen to have bought. The consistency of shots, angles etc across the videos makes it really easy to gauge how a lens is holding up visually before even considering the relaxed, conversational and accurate observations of your voiceovers come into play. I think you should get a lot more views than an average 20K per video due to the quality, personally! :-D
Thanks! And hopefully in a few months this video should have a lot more views hehe :-)
Literally the ONLY lens reviewer I trust
I must say, you’re one of my favourite camera reviewers. You point out the pros and cons and personal insights when appropriate. But as a whole you focus on the gear and less about creating a brand and super epic video production It’s a breath of fresh air, and I love that you remain committed to a very basic approach (and I mean that in a very positive way). Keep up the solid delivery, best wishes for the rest for 2020 and beyond!
3rd party lens producers are really hitting it out of the park as of late. I just got the Samyang 85mm AF for my EOS R and I'm really happy with it. Going to look into this too.
I have been waiting for this review since the lens came out! Thanks Chris!!!
Me too bro
Thanks so much, Chris! I waited for this Review since last year, the Announcement ! :-)
I know you have higher standards than most, which is what makes your channel so valuable, but I hope when people watch your videos they take their own personal situation into account. For example, I would likely use this for black and white 35mm film shooting on a Canon EF SLR. For me, the weaknesses of this lens are way less important (colour fringing in the corners for example). But it's the level of detail that goes into showing these minor aspects that would give me confidence buying this, because for some people, colour fringing may be the ultimate deal breaker. Thanks for being so thorough all the time!
I wanted to hate this lens but just can’t....I use this on my 6D Mark II and just love the results. All in all like Chris says, depends on how you shoot and your expectations. I use this for landscape images and close in shots of plant material and the occasional shots of my dogs constantly entertaining me. Don’t be nervous about this lens. eBay and Amazon have great return policies. To me worth a try.
Wow! I just asked if you'd seen this lens on your last video haha
What perfect timing
Great video as always
Nice review and very nice budget 35mm lens.
Changed my mind and decided to give this one a try. Pretty impressed with it so far!
Returned it. Wasn’t happy with the distortion and the rendering. 😔
You might like it but I felt the optics were toy-like and didn’t represent good value for money. Looked more like a zoom than a 35 because of the distortion. The f/2 is actually a bit better so I stayed with that and also have a Tamron 35 1.8 for backup.
As always a great video
Good price, good pictures! 😁👍
i didn’t even know this existed i am actually interested in a new 35mm
Same, just because a Mike Day video.
ChrisOdden i never heard of him i’ll look him up
sunnymadethat , Matt.. Matt day. God damn autocorrect
The non-uwm version is probably the best bang for your buck.
Very greate reviews! I'm only missing one important aspect. How about adding the real brightness (T-Stop)? For me it was a game changer to know, that the big zooms (150-600) from Tamron and Sigma differ in real brightness about 1-stop, even if aperture number is the same.
Thank you Mr Frost
Finally, I asked you to review this lens 🤭🤭
That 35mm 1.4 tamron is the holy grail of all 35m. Lens. Zeiss 35mm distagon is close!! Sigma art is 3rd.. the. Canon L lens is last with this lens
35mm 1.4 L II is significantly sharper than the Sigma. The Canon outperforms the Tamron significantly at times, depending on focus distance and corner sharpness. Tamron is marginally shaper at its sweet spot and focal length. No lens is the holy grail.
I love you vídeos!!
Sigma&L look and Youngnuo quality. ✌🏻
we love you sir
Hey! We finally got to see the front of the statue ! ;p
Also seen in the 85mm 1.4L review.
Chris, any chance you'll be reviewing the newest 9mm f/5.6 offering from Venus Optics? Would love to see a review from you on that lens!
I've a m6 mark2 and after what I saw about the EOS R focus issue I wonder if the same applies to the Eos M mount, I saw a review of that camera on this channel some time ago, did you test this lens with your m6 mk2?
Thanks for The Review. Looks you have a nice s8880db edifier 👍🏼, i have one too
Dear Christopher, the video you have made is fabulous, I have a Canon APS-C EF camera and I am interested in buying this lens, would you suggest me to buy the Yongnuo 35mm f / 1.4C or this one that you show Yongnuo 35mm f / 1.4 DF UWM? Sincerely
Just as Yongnou starts making compelling DSLR lenses....I've moved to mirrorless 😂
I saw you commenting about thinking about moving to mirrorless a long time ago, so finally did huh?
What's your camera now?
U'r lucky that not the other way around
@@rafsannasfar5137 I've gone with the Sony system. Had an NEX6 that I grew to love and now I've got A7RII and a6500
I think Canon only who consisting Made dslr, and it's still great market for third party lenses manufacturer
@@Wabajak13 Sounds like it's time for an MC-11
I really have been curious about these little lenses, but I doubt they'd work with the L mount adapter.
Can you make a comparison of different 35mm f1.4 lens?
Hope they also make it for Nikon F mount
Hi, i use the latest lense on canon eos 70d, why i rarely get the unfocused result? if the object’s 2 meters away but if its about 1 meter or closed up. The result is getting better, and sometimes is perfect. Thanks man
I really wish you would test the Yongnuo 35mm f/2 Nikon mount.
My first generation 35mm non-uwm version focus as fast as, if not faster than most of my Canon EF lenses on the EOS-R, even faster than the native mount RF50mm f/1.8.
Hi. When will come a new yongnuo 35mm for sony full frame lens please
this or the original canon 35mm f/2?
Somehow, its more like alternative version from the famous sigma 35 1/4 art... Lol
.
.
Anyway, this is my first coment on ur video, just dont know what i wanted to say, but every lenses that i choose is bcus ur channel sir.. So much thanks from me...
Reminds me more of the 35L II.
I wonder how it compares to Canon's RF 35mm f1.8
Can i use at canon eos M6 without adapter?
Is this good for video work? EF mount?
hi sir this lens can use to eos r?
well, this lens looks pretty good to me.
0:19 Was the lens shipped to you with canon rear lens cap, or did you put one on there by accident?
I put it on there by accident. Wanna know a secret? I was also getting video footage of a Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO ii lens at the same time, and I mixed up the rear caps :-)
Pretty sharp, even not the sharpness. It's a lil bit unfortunate that you can't test this lens on canon eos m6 ii. I wonder how is the lens auto focus and sharpness on that system. Cos I'm eos m user.the price point is pretty interesting for me.
Yongnuo is improving 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Will this fit a Nikon z7ii
Would you recommend a Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 IS USM, or the Yongnuo 35mm f/1.4 DF UWM, for APS-C and FF respectively? Would be great if you are able to create a comparison video of the two lenses too. Thanks.
What about the Tamron 35mm f/1.8?
Or the original 35mm f/2? I’m feeling a 35mm comparison video coming on!
Well I decided to send it back because I couldn’t live with the distortion. So close to being a winner! 😖
hello good night this lens is good for photo and video or you don't recommend
Yongnuo is becoming serious now.
Assuming these lenses are reliable enough, yes.
Unfortunately all yongnuo products I used so far had extremely short lifespan. It is possible they mitigated these problems, but without being sure about it, I strongly suggest you to choose a store which accepts warranty. Always take the most out of this lens during your warranty period, if you are really going to buy one of these.
I've actually waited for some cheaper lenses with autofocus, if this performs well it'll be a definite purchase haha
PS well sadly it's pretty expensive... Id rather get the sigma if it's only 100€ more
I just might. But I’m also saving up for a used tamron 70-200 vc so....
Are all the background photos in the review videos taken with the lens being reviewed?
Yes
Yup, with some very light editing (colours and contrast)
Not the best lens but the price is nice.
Looking forward to your Nikon Z lens reviews :)
For the price it very well could be the best lens!
So which Canon lens did they copy this time? Their other lenses are all copies of older Canon lens (14/2.8L, 35/2 USM, 50/1.8 II, 50/1.4 USM, 85/1.8USM and 100/2 USM). I'd guess this is probably a copy of the 35/1.4L v1.
And their coating sucks, but for the cost they're great little lenses for the FF DSLR user on a budget. Very well suited to a D6x0 or 6D user.
Looks more like the 35L II. And it’s pretty dang good for the price.
I want to know if it's compatible with film cameras.
German Stenta probably not, if you don’t have an EF mount film camera
hello good day.. please advice me.Is it recomended or not for photography ?
yes
It's not perfect but somehow I still have high expectation for Yongnuo lenses, I have three of their lenses and always love the bokeh.
Which ones do you own Fred, and how's your overall experience other than bokeh, if you don't mind me asking?
@@AbbasBinYounas I have 50 1.8 and 1.4 and 35 f2. I actually bought them all according to Chris' review so my own experience is close to them. One thing is 50 1.4 doesn't focus good through the OVF on my 6D (Chris tested it only with a7r2) but you can use live view to get better results.
@@frederickletterblair many thanks!
The bokeh on this lens is exactly as advertised.
Waiting for years 😆😆😆
Looking 24mm f/1.4
Hey Chris, are you the owner of the site chrisfrostphotography?
Nope - that's another Chris Frost
@@christopherfrost Feel you on this one... my names Chris Martin. I couldn't even get a domain name with my full name and middle name... there was already another photographer with the full three name combo!!
Is this compatible for canon 90d
yes
I'm still looking for the holy grail autofocus ultrafast 35mm lens, I thought I was close with this one... but... Snap!, the autofocus issues make this lens a pity. It's not future-proof with the R (neither with other mirrorrless cameras), and the video autofocus is bad most of the time. I own the 85mm f1.8 (with the whining motor) and it also has issues with autofocus in video mode. I know it is hard to reverse engineer the lens electronic protocol, but come on... It looks like lack of testing. I guess you get what you pay for. I will keep looking for my holy 35mm on the used market. Snif.
Tamron seems the better option for you.
@@brandonj8018 too expensive IMHO, for an enthusiast. Maybe on the second hand market. The 1.8 is cheaper but 1.4 is my target.
I enjoy your reviews, but how could this possibly be the first Yongnuo lens with an autofocus motor?!?!
He already tested several AF Yongnuo lenses so I guess that must be a typo
Tamron 35mm 1.8 or Yongnuo 35mm 1.4?
Saving money? This one. Color rendition is slightly better.
Let’s hope this lens is more robust and reliable than YN-RT600EX with their atrocious battery bay doors and zoom motors :D
How's this....that lens, from sellers out here in Australia, would cost me nearly AU$1000 (AU$994-AU$996). I can get the same lens, sent out from the US, and pay only AU$667. Just goes to show you how some people will ripoff consumers just because they can. The government out here is trying to make it harder for people to buy overseas and instead to buy here. But, you wonder why people here go overseas to buy stuff, when the sellers here are out to ripoff people. Too much greed, both on account of the sellers and the government.
Why you not test this lens on Canon EOS R Christ?
Did you actually watch the review?
No test in canon m series,. Sad :(
Which EOS M camera do you own?
@@christopherfrost M50
@@LBOtaku A 24mp camera? Well, take a look at the 24mp APS-C test in this video, and there are your test results.
Why does it look like a Sigma Art clone??
Guess they ripped off of that and put a red ring on it. 😛
if they provided a lens, then no. By definition it is NOT a "totally independent review", that's literally not what those words mean. Most of this would be fine even as a non-independent review since > half this is just objective facts, but you need to not lie to people regardless.
My advice would be stay clear of this lens. If the Canon 35mm f/1.4 is too expensive for you or you don't need f/1.4 then get the EF 35mm f/2 or the RF 35mm f/1.8 for the best overall performance and guaranteed compatibility (especially with future, yet to be released Canon cameras).
Thanks, I’m in a toss-up between this and the original f/2.
When your friend will return your new camera(Canon EOS M6 Mark ii) Christ?
So... if you REALLY want the f/1.4, you're better off saving up more for the better options, or just going with one of the many very good f/1.8 lenses out there.
@facelessninetytwo aka Man of the Rain There's a lot more to the comparison than that, and sharpness is only one part of the image quality evaluation. Chris noted several image quality issues with the Yongnuo that aren't there with higher-quality lenses. At both f/1.4 and f/1.8 apertures.
The distortion tests were especially of note here. There is virtually no distortion with the Sigma.
Any image quality issues means more time spent in post correcting for that. And correcting them in post with software isn't the same as having a lens without those issues in the first place.
@facelessninetytwo aka Man of the Rain So you would be comfortable handing pictures to clients with issues you KNOW are there merely because your clients can't immediately notice them?
@facelessninetytwo aka Man of the Rain And I'm also a hobbyist, but I also regularly photograph other people. Knowing the image quality issues with this lens, I would not feel comfortable having it in my arsenal.
Good Bargain though🔥🔥🔥🔥 a $1,000 plus on a lense gets you bankrupt lol...
4:03 your Canon EOS R(Full Frame 30 Megapixels) already low in battery power Christ.
waste of money
You had it? What was your experience? I’m still considering it.
Decided to try it and so far I’m impressed. Guess you got a bad copy.
you could literally give me one of those cheap chinese lens and I would never use it
That’s encouraging...
Sony works badly as ever
kind of like a copycat for sigma lollolooooo
you mean canon lol...did you not see the red ring??? :p
Brandon J in terms of appearance it looks like a sigma build style, only the colour is a Canon thing.
Ah.
I’m sorry, but those AF problems especially in live view video makes this lens a complete joke. Even a Nifty Fifty can handle this! At that price, please just buy second hand trustworthy lenses.
hi sir this lens can use to eos r?
