  • The ENSA equipment testing department studied the strength of different types of snow anchor commonly used by mountain climbers, skiers and rescue workers: snow-stakes, ice-axes, skis, ski poles…etc.
These are known as deadman anchors.
The results suggest that the angle at which a deadman is placed, significantly affects its holding power.

ENSA Chamonix, would you make these tables accessible to us mountaineers to learn from and expand on? Different snow conditions, gradual or shock loading, etc.

i cant believe the plastic bag and coke bottle were far superior than an ice axe at 25 deg.

I like how the Coke bottle rates higher than the snow bollard.

It would also be good to know whether these different tests were shock loaded or just a gradual increase in force from the winch

It is not common to get your anchor shock loaded when you rappel.

So... Instead of a snowbollard, we should be rigging a couple of equalised drinks bottles?! Crazy data... I feel like we need some elaboration...

I would like to know how that plastic bag was rigged. Could we have a demonstration?

So fucking funny, I’m here from frozen too. Never thought I’d immediately find a group of like minded people because of frozen and skiing, and it made me laugh immediately when I saw your comment. Thanks for that 🤘
