- The ability to build snow anchors is an essential skill for glacier travel, crevasse rescue, and travel on steep snow. This video demonstrates how to construct a top-clip picket anchor, a mid-clip picket anchor, and a deadman/T-trench with a picket and with an ice axe.
At 7:50 the snow picket is covered (or back - filled as described later) to prevent melt - out and adverse effects to the anchor integrity. At 26:12 you explained it's not practically necessary. Obviously the quality of the snow is the main determinant. And after factoring the surrounding insulation of the snow at the depth of embedded anchor, would you change you mind in certain environmental conditions i.e , overhead (directly on anchor) sunlight, high temperature difference between snow and (ambient) air? curious if you could elaborate on your decision-making process at that point.

These videos are all so good! I'm super glad you came out with this one, it clarified a lot of things for me. What are your thoughts on "shorty" 18" pickets? I would think that deadmanning 2 18"'s would be as strong as 1 36", but would allow you more placements in better snow.
Wish I had the guts to climb. Looks amazing but I have a legit fear of heights.

Thanks for putting this video out there, this is the most informative I've seen on youtube so far. I've spent some time with a guide over in Scotland and this video was a great way to refresh and revise the buried ice axe technique. It also answered a few questions that I had lingering my mind.
