Dude are you my spirit animal? The django thumbnail you have is my phone background and shakti with JML is the best modern spiritual music of all time.
This guy is another level. I bought all the Mahavishnu Orchestra albums and tried to learn a few songs but only ever managed a few phrases (and maybe not so well). Awesome player.
+Gretschomatic LOL! Yes, he should have worn it in this style back in the MaHa O. days. He will always remain one of my favorites. He dazzles constantly year after year.
Yes!!!! John McLaughlin is and always will be my favorite guitar player hands down! Well actually I have to say in my top three or four depending on styles. Very few move me as much as John does. No this isn't classical but he's always incorporated elements of classical, jazz, Indian, fusion, and more. And I gotta agree with someone else below..the camera angles ridiculously linger on his face and from far away. Anyone watching John mainly wants to see his fingers working his magic! Can't wait to see him again in December with Chick Corea, Lenny White and Victor Wooten doing Mahavishnu and Return to forever. I'm beyond thrilled!!
The perfect marriage of awesome technique, taste, musicality and emotion. Puts today’s bedroom virtuosos to absolute shame. Music is about connecting with people, in a live environment. Thank you, John.
This is pure Indian classical music he is playing in guitar..Indian classical Raga..sometimes his guitar sounds like Sitar, one Indian classical instrument.
He's simply the Best... Yeah, Miles was right! And so sweet when he's relaxed and enjoying his music 🎶 Love you John since 43 years and forever ❣️ thanks for your music, your spiritual inspiration and just for being you 🙏
John McLaughlin is one of my favourite guitarists and a huge influence. As a classical, jazz & rock player myself at professional level, I can assure you that this is not classical guitar in any sense. It's a bluesy/jazzy improvisation (with some elements of the Indian fusion John has pioneered over the years) played on a nylon string guitar with a pick, accompanied by a guitar synthesiser. The closest I have ever heard him come to Classical music is his Mediterranean Concerto, worth checking out. But as always, his playing rather defies categorisation.
Such a palpable connection between the tonality and the aspiration for transcendence ! It's the amalgam of imagination with the strictures of the instrument ! A true marvel. Thank you John, for exposing the creative process in all its splendor !
*SWEET* ! Been rollin with JM ever since Miles' phenomenal "Bitches Brew" dropped in 1970. Saw Shakti & MO in Seattle back in the day. G.O.A.T. status! Changed my life. One of the main reasons I picked up a guitar, as well as put it back down lol. Thnx. All hail the living legend!
A notable thing about J McL is that he plays without needing to see. His eyes were closed for nearly all of that performance, but his left hand travelled freely over the guitar fretboard, all over. Makes me wonder if he deliberately trained himself by practicing blindfolded.
McLaughlin is something mystically meditatively transcendental in music! India really breathed into him the energy of the creative cosmic principle and he successfully implements it, delighting his listeners! this is my favorite musician of all!!!
For me,John McLaughlin is THE ULTIMATE guitar player ever …: jazz ,rock, indian ,spanish Classic ,electric,Acoustic, etc He even recorded his Mediterranean concerto I’ve seen him many times live EVEN with the legendary formation with Paco de Lucia and Al di Meola, live here in my Country,Chile IDOL !!!
John is number one under all this kind of music players. His extraorinary art of improvisation has not find or copy.Music from an other star! played on great nylonstring guitar.
He was playing a lot of nylon string guitar back then (late 80's)...he did tour the U.S. in 1989 playing with the local symphony orchestras. The piece was his Mediterranean Concerto (in honor of Rodrigo). Here in Detroit he played it with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra...summer of '89. I remember it well...got to meet both him and Katia Lebeque, his significant other at the time.
I saw him perform with orchestra at the Dorthy Chandler Pavilion. Miles Davis was in 3 rows in front of me. It was a wonderful concert. I hear John is retiring this year.
He's pretty damn happy with himself here. I can see why, because this some very fluid jazzy McLaughlin shredding. Probably some of the coolest I've ever heard him do
The father d the fusion guitar. I think John started it with Miles Davis wh said John was the greatest jazz guitarist of all-times. Nobody's done more.
Yes,I can: I guess Holdsworth is the even faster technician, but if you know the whole work as a composer, inventor of many styles never heard before, you cannot say they are equals. John is a giant, like Miles and some rare others. Alan is a gifted musician and incredible, almost unbeatable guitar player in the category of a Steve Vai or some few others. Butcreating new musical worlds is a higher category. (Think on Shakti i.e.)
Daniel A. Meyer Well I am afraid I'm going to have to disagree with at least part of that statement. Comparing Allan Holdsworth to Steve Vai is completely illogical. Steve Vai is a virtuoso shredder, he has a large toolbelt of acrobatic tricks but basically he's made no innovations in guitar in terms of composition. Allan Holdsworth's chordal vocabulary and voicings, as well as his approach to interpreting harmony when soloing over changes, is above and beyond what any other guitar player has accomplished. Completely disregarding Allan being the "faster" player, some of his most innovative playing is actually his slower, more chord oriented work. John Mclaughlin himself said of Allan "I would steal everything he does if I had any idea what he was playing".
After hearing what zakk wylde always said he was really great I thought I would check it out...man no wonder he likes him so much! John is amazing guitar player!!
No wonder anyone likes John; the greatest living guitarist. But that is an odd one; you sure can't hear a trace of John's influence. Funny how that works sometimes, like the bass player from Metallica having a major role in producing the recent documentary about the late great Jaco Pastorious, though his own playing (what I've heard of it) has no hint of Jaco at all.
This is more than just another guitar shred and JML is more than musician, this is spiritual experience
Truth.
Dude are you my spirit animal? The django thumbnail you have is my phone background and shakti with JML is the best modern spiritual music of all time.
I found this after seeing him play with Paco De Lucia. What a virtuoso!
Truth! Preach!!!
Poderoso meñique vive Dios !!
I LOVE John on acoustic. This is where, to me, his brilliance really shines.
I saw him many years ago on acoustic guitar with Trilok Guru and Kai Eckhardt and I consider this concert to be one of the best I have ever seen.
As this man plays the spirit rises, absolute genius.
More breathtaking beauty from the master. Thanks for this!
This has to be the best performance I've seen of John Mclaughlin. All solo, all I need :))
This guy is another level. I bought all the Mahavishnu Orchestra albums and tried to learn a few songs but only ever managed a few phrases (and maybe not so well). Awesome player.
Try again. Insist and persist, that is the central idea. 3:00

its divine and sacred when music is played with such mastery
Beautiful, creative, awesome , breathtakin '! !!!!
Beautiful display of his virtuosity and ferocious intent..JM in his zone. Thanks for this!
I spent the last 4 decades learning from this man….still am….Viva John Ji!
JM is a most amazing guitarist, always fresh and innovative approaches, but I must also say that he has amazing hair !!

Yep, absolutely Fabulous. His speed is amazing.

This makes me appreciate the power of an acoustic guitar !
THE BEST GUITARIST I'VE EVER SEEN!
PARA MI JOHN ES UN LIDER ESPIRITUAL , LO ADMIRO POR SU VIRTUOSISMO, COMPOSITOR, PROESOR, ES MAS QUE UN GUITARRISTA , GRACIAS POR SUBIR ESTA OBRA
This is pure Indian classical music he is playing in guitar..Indian classical Raga..sometimes his guitar sounds like Sitar, one Indian classical instrument.
I remember seeing him in Manchester around this time. Great gig!!
Great forever

Indeed this is a spiritual journey as another person commented
Paco? Wow!

Amazing wonderful beautiful and MAGIC John the best ever !!!
This is not classical guitar stuff 🤔 BUT THIS IS MASTERPIECE 😍
Possibly that they meant carnatic, there are many points when he looks to be interpolating carnatic ragas (modes)...
Bits and pieces here. Shakti and Extrapolation. Fantastic!
... with a little Belo Horizonte and the Mahavishnu reboot thrown in for seasoning!
Beautiful.
It's really hard to find the right words for his skills. He is the master!!

ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITARIST PLAYER EVER IN HISTORY
MASTERPIECE
FABULOUS
Just an unreal "synthesis," literal and musical, of Indian and jazz on nylon guitar. Wow.
Thank you so much.
Max
That's a big concert a stadium wow - saw them with Steve Mores with Al John and Paco - the tour was super successful
Simply divine: John, Al, and Paco the very best

Just beautifully wondrous
we must hear this guitarsound with open heart.
tribute to paco ,this melody obsessed spiritualities.

John’s playing has a spiritual quality to it other guitarists just don’t have
Beyond sublime! Maestro McLaughlin is a complete master.
this shows he is a great musician
Great posting Tom. He's something else, isn't he?
Miles was right.
Excellent !.
I saw John play with Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia in Boston in the early 90's. It was a truly mind blowing concert never to be forgotten.
+Stevie Silver I was probably there brother Stevie!!
immense feeling
It's as if he was representing the ultimate potential in guitar playing. That's what pure spirit sounds like...LOVE

FANTASTIC VIDEO 📹...HE IS AMAZING 👏
It has a nice rhythmic feel to it !
I saw him perform with orchestra at the Dorthy Chandler Pavilion. Miles Davis was in 3 rows in front of me. It was a wonderful concert. I hear John is retiring this year.
You heard wrong, he’s my cousin, he’s not retiring
It's actually John's amazing hair that's doing the playing...it is so perfectly styled that it has acquired telekinetic powers.
Now it's up to YOU to use YOUR telekinetic powers and bring back your brains from your ass to your head
😂
Somebody is starving for attention
Thank you!

This song is also on 'Live at the Royal Festival Hall' w/ Trilok Gurtu and Kai Eckhardt.
The Melnibonean what's the name of this song?
It's not a song unless someone is singing. For instrumental music it's more appropriate to say a melody, tune, or piece.
I've seen them in Germany (SB) just perfect 🎸🎶😀

He was in Saalfelden, Jazzfestival, with this guitar, yes, I remember. Was great.
The real deal, plus a few more.
