Of all the many configurations J. McL has played in, this "Heart of Things" line up is one of my all time faves! Some droids complained J. McL didn't solo enough. I think he was somewhat influenced by Weather Report's ensemble playing where the entire band runs through extended arrangements together vs. just solo'ing over chords. And of course, like Miles, he was influenced compositionally as well as the spirit of Duke Ellington. Everyone on this tour is a monster in their own right - Jim Beard - kb, Gary Thomas - sax, Matthew Garrison - bs. (son of Jimmy Garrison, Coltrane's bass player), Mr. DC - Dennis Chambers - perf. and the Maestro, J. McL. It's so great to be able to see these concerts live with great sound. God Bless You Tube!
All the musicians are amazing and solo phenom...but I would like a bit more Solo from the grand master him self I must admit..Thanks for info, fascinating.
Agree, in fact this is probably my favorite JM band since the original Mahavishnu Orchestra line up. Another one I really dig was his short lived 1994 Trio project, The Free Spirits - w/ Dennis Chambers and Joey DeFrancesco. Their live at Blue Note Tokyo is an amazing record.
@@afattorelli Holdsworth and Bill Connors come to mind. Bill with Return to Forever then went all acoustic and exploded in the 80's with his own brand of Legato style ( Holdsworthian) technique. But ya...JeFF B. just kept doin' and more of the impossible on the guitar with such grace and confidence. Yep- agreed on that. I'm there's a lot of other ever evolving innovators we haven't mentioned and i could i could geek out more. Appreciate your response
To have a band like this with great skilled, disciplined, well trained musicians.... is something only Masters like John Mc Laugling, Chick Corea, Frank Zappa, and few others could afford in the past, and I don't see anyone for the future right now.
Dennis the menace on the drum set. Grooves that define a genre, and solos that make you wonder if he's been genetically enhanced lol. Mclaughlin's playing here and his whole life's work is something to really admire.
hoLee SHIt! This is outstanding stuff.... I have all these old LP's in crates still! Young people.... LISTEN...... you are seeing the one of the best drummers EVER. They all look like they are having a ball...
once more on youtube: the mastery of dennis chambers! those single hand sixteenths on the ride are ballistic, i love them!! but that's the first time i see him play a three piece kit ;-)
One of my favourite pieces of all time. When I play it on my drums either with others or all alone I am transportted to a whole new realm. It seems to feed my soul, my intellect and my physical health. Some of this jazz stuff is quite the workout on a kit of drums.
Hart of things! What an album! What a line up! John's sound in this period with the Johnny Smith guitar was SOO good! This music still makes me happy after more than 20 years! Dear John THANKS!
That's got to be the smallest kit Dennis has played since he was a kid. And it's lovely to see the legendary Jimmy Garrison's son Matthew holding it down with great style.
I saw this Tour in Cambridge U.K ~ The Band were held up in a traffic jam and arrived late, crowd ushered out of the hall so they could Soundcheck. I watched them run through a couple of numbers through a window in the door. Crowd let back in. John seemed unhappy and uncomunicative, and I swear they ran through the tunes real fast so much so that it was hard to grasp what they were doing, (going through the motions at hyperspeed?) I'm greatfull for this upload to get a grip on what I missed!
Dors anyone know the set up for John's tone in this band? It fits the style like a glove, thick... There's some kind of chorus... Same set up when he played with Dennis and deFrancesco. Love the tone of those records
What a brilliant concert, this is true musicianship. I have seen JMcL with 4th Dimension live @ Leverkusener Jazztage in 2012, and he hasn't lost the slightest bit of his aura...
Gary Thomas - sax, flute Dennis Chambers - drums magnificos, que pena no hizo mas música asi, me hace acordar a Mahavishnu pero mas refinado con to Miles Davis.
When I heard groovemaster Dennis played the late 1980 Mahavishnu reformat it sounded interesting. Never was much Mahavishnu fan in 70s. Jim Beard I probably knew his style an Matt the pedigreed bassist from Herbie's future2future video. This group is slamming! I did like Johnny McLaughlin Electric Guitarist LP 70s so the man is a Master.
Yes I agree. Scofield, while a master, saw him with Adam Nussbaum on drums back in '87, that sound tends to give me listener fatigue. mJohnny Mac just always seems so alive. Remember "Electric Dreams, Electric Sighs". But I agree. Thanks for your insight dude. Quite smart.
One of the best John McLaughlin led bands ever, these guys together absolutely rocked. Peak musicianship here 🔥
RIP GREAT JIM BEARD ❤

Yes, but I prefer with Otmaro on KB (featured on the disc live in Paris)
All the musicians are amazing and solo phenom...but I would like a bit more Solo from the grand master him self I must admit..Thanks for info, fascinating.
Totally agree! The sound and the composition of “T.H.O.T.T.” Album are the Highest Level or JML production

Dennis Chambers ruled the entire universe in the 90s.
Convisis without question the best in that decade.
and still is
ronald bruner jr stole that one this decade
Paul Atreides. um somewhat i will give u that but.. eric moore took some of that too
what you know bout my nephew!!!? Beast!!!
Such a level of abstraction in improvisation... a very very exotic flavor! Kinda like eating colors!
Love that description!
Beautifully put!
🎶 musical trip 🍄 ....
John M. has been one of my principle musical heroes since 1973. The dude just keeps on growing and perfecting his ever innovating approaches - amazing
Same here!
Continued inovation. I could only find this in Jeff Beck and John's work.

0:00 - The Divide
13:46 - Social Climate
23:42 - Mr. D.C.
37:27 - Fallen Angels
44:34 - Acid Jazz
Thank you!
God bless you Vladan . This is very helpful.!
❤
Mr. Thomas is such a great Saxophone players!
he is the beginning of a new era and entirely new approach to the instrument. he has escaped the limitations of the instrument,
I saw this live and it was way over my head. It isn't now its mind-blowing.

if i was taken to this concert as a kid i would have learned so much..
Jim Beard citing Happy birthday to you. Sweet.

I love that song! Jim Beard is an unsung hero too - I love his music.
I think Gary Thomas has to be one of the Top 5 things that ever happened to this planet. Brutally honest. Eloquent. No bullshit whatsoever.

J, McL & Company laid a lot of the framework back then what you hear yesterday! I would of said today! But, We know how lousy Today is!
Totally agree.
"7th Quadrant", "Kold Kage", "By Any Means Necessary" and "Code Violations" brought me here.
John is a father of all, how many musicians played whit him whith feelings that feed your heart...let him go it's free

High level harmony, rhythm concept and great melody with dexterity.
Nice concert
I love this - especially the digital keyboards 😁

Came for John , found Dennis the Monster and Jim the Genius - great show!!!
Great sound he's getting on the hollow body. you can hear every plucked/picked note!
Mind blowing literally!
Dear J.M.
Your keyboard player is badass
Wonderful! Great music! 👍👍👍
they blew the tops off of the Swabians that day!! I love this performance, one of my favorites!!! Best lineup ever.
I watched the whole concert.
Lots of colors, textures...just a sublime experience.
Jim Beard song! Cool performance!
That's a crazy guitar tone at end, among JMs many, and i fear to read the comment upon it - but I love it
Garrison...EXTREMELY "UNDERRATED"!
And cheated out of his camera time!
@@ricaard He is not even written in the opening credits!!!
@@vladimirsandtner4438 it was a CRIME!

Somewhere around (58:00), John's really in the zone. He's clearly at his peak here.
When Dennis plays, the sounds take a trail infinite
Pure magic start to finish. Thanks for sharing...
Superbe concert !!
Que dire de mieux que ... respect Maestro 🎉
John McLaughlin Live 1998
Dennis Chambers on the last tune !!!!!
Great Fusion Jazz Right there.
Gary Thomas - sax, flute Dennis Chambers - drums magnificos, que pena no hizo mas música asi, me hace acordar a Mahavishnu pero mas refinado con to Miles Davis.
I agree....
That is a Ring Modulator! YEAH!
@2:30 "Are you the one?" quote/call. Matt Garrison smiles. Musicians.
Beard and McLaughlin quoting Happy Birthday, Gary Thomas quoting All The Things You Are.. and that is just in one song. Who's birthday was it anyway?
Excelente!!!
Yes indeed!!
Thank you.
Que banda hay ahí 👍👏🎶🎧🎷🎸🥁
gold
thanks .

Check out Ronald Bruner Jr,!!! A Beast!! Hey Nephew!!!
Awesome!
I want to hear Mclaughlin sing.
his guitar sings for him....

anything with dennis chambers is awesome
Totally agree, we are past that, even during the late 90's.

Anybody knows what that effect is when Matt Garrison seems to be vocalising into a mic while playing?
JM sounding very fluid, reminds me of his Extrapolation days
Matthew Garrison is awesome bass player.
I like John,s solo at 19.20
Bjørn Hjartnes man! He’s burning on that one!
did they give Matt garrison credit on bass
I didn't see his name
Hello, have you forgotten the sublime recording named TonyWilliamsLifetime/Emergenc/sy? Dag
That bebop tune was insane.
Where is that in the concert?
nice
