As a Finn I find the whole comparison between forests up here and in Cali completely ridiculous. Finland is in the arctic, it's covered entirely in forest (except in the far north where trees don't grow) and one could basically either ski or swim through that forest all year around. Finland is cold. Finland is wet. That's why Finland isn't on fire.
@@eily_b If you're referring to Finland, then not in any major way that I've heard of. Sweden did have forest fires that caused some alarm here too. I'm not saying we're completely safe from climate change, but overall the threat of fires is much smaller here than in places like California or Portugal.
i gotta say finnish social media has never been as entertaining as it was yesterday. someone posted a picture of a tree branch with just one leaf left, saying "just waiting for that last leaf to fall so i can rake it. any minute now" and i just about died laughing.

My family is from Finland.....and NOBODY knows WTF Trump is Talking about!....First of all....Finland and California are Vastly different Ecosystems! Finland has a TON more Water in its Forests, lakes, rivers, and run off from snow in mountains etc. And most areas that are Forested are not densely populated like most of these California areas. So we have WAY Less instances of Forest Fires! Not to mention California is so over developed that has taken away alot of its natural water resources, but that is a minimal fact in relation to the increase in Temperatures over the last 20 years due to Climate Change! Combined with Incredibly strong, dry, unpredictable Wind Systems which can carry fire for miles in the air and start massive house fires from a lightning strike fire miles away.....It has very little to do with the "Forest Floor".... There are also massive valleys in between the forest areas that are simply miles of dry brush! So if a forest fire starts....you have miles of fuel for that fire.....That is a natural ecology....you can't 'Rake Up' miles of dry grasses that are an important part of the ecosystem, are too large to eliminate, and would totally destroy the natural growth! It's a major dry, arid climate. I have friends in the LA, Thousand Oak and Malibu areas that have tried to do things to their house like add metal roofing instead of wood, adding special glass and bars to their windows, trying to keep a water bumper around their property etc.....but these fires are the WORST in California History! If miles and miles of land are on fire and fire is being driven and fueled by the wind.....nothing will stand in its path, no amount of water or ditches can stop a Disaster of this magnitude.... People need to be more bloody careful with their campfires that's what started the one huge destructive blaze that claimed so many lives and destroyed the town of Paradise, but barring that....if there is a natural fire that occurs from a lightning storm and is near urban areas, there is not alot to do to stop it except get out of its path.....we don't have Fireproof Homes! These Fires are Massive and Devastating. Mother Nature will always win against Humans whether it's a massive fire, tsunami, earthquake etc. It's a horrible fact of Life. All my Love to the Families who lost Loved Ones and their Homes in this Massive Disaster and we all need to donate what we can to help these Families rebuild their Lives. 💞.
KirstiStephenson Actually, they haven’t finished investigating, yet. One possible ignition source I read about was sparks from a flat tire. Sparks from passing cars have started many of our fires. We had a simultaneous series of them in my neighborhood that were started that way, last year. This one called the Camp Fire, because it started near Camp Creek Road. In Finland we have some of the biggest densities of lakes and islands as a country, which means plenty of waterline besides the forests. And the word "suo" in Suomi (Finland in Finnish) also happens to mean a marsh which does make sense with the previous facts. Forest fires do happen here like they did in the last hot summer, but not too often. We could extinguish our own and even lend our aid in extinguishing Sweden's. I would say that it's a bigger concern here that a tree falls under the weight of snow and cuts a power line.

It is a real term. But it is usually used when you need to point out exact height like tree tops. When you are talking about the ground you usually say ground. Not saying its wrong (well unless you say the floor of the forest instead of forest floor) but it is still just a really weird way of talking about the ground.

The only "forest" left is more like bicycle themed park. People are indeed raking economic forest to get rid of smaller trees and twigs. Easiest way to grow them faster and those trees survive forest fires much easier when there isn't a lot biomass to burn around them.

As a Finn I've been trying to wrap my head around this for days. We do NOT rake our forests! Raking is part of gardening and forests are not. We have around ten acres of forest per capita, raking all of it would be impossible. In stead the humidity and dense network of forest roads help us keep forest fires under control. You know what else is dense? Trump.

My father was diagnosed with Alzheimers about 2 years ago and over the last year or so I've noticed Trump going through the same stages as my father went through. As a Finnish man I can confirm that statement we Finnish people take a lot of pride and care deeply of our rich forests and keep them clean by cutting down some trees and in the process make the "floors" of the forest better and the forest healthier.

There's better terms than "raking the forest" for this process. It just has little to do with forest fires though, and as you correctly stated the climate is very different but most importantly the "forest floor" is very different. Trump didn't understand it at all so he just did what he always does - makes up a story of the things he's not paying attention to and reinvents those things suited for his own needs knowing his supporters will buy it anyways. He is just that transparent.
@tdot22 Sweden that is right next to Finland and shares the same climate had the largest forest fires of its history this year. An area of 20 000 hectares burnt there. The largest forest fire in Finland in the last decades was 250 hectares in 1997. There is an effort to collect twigs and other clutter to be burned in power plants and systems for monitoring the forests for fires so that they can be put off early. California has 8 times the people of Finland for a land area that is just a third larger. Even if there are dry conditions around the year, there's no excuse for large areas of forests to be burning every few years. Trump does have a point when criticizing the forest management in California. If they wanted to prevent the fires that cost lives and burn vast areas of land, it could be done one way or another.
jormapeikko the logic thing to do would have been to ask Finland to send over some experts to help in training/showing how to maintain the forests, in exchange on knowledge and friendship between the two countries, - and also accept that global warming is contributing to the increasing fires, and what to do to try and reduces them as much as possible for the people of California, But hey he’d rather believe you guys use rakes to clear the forest floor, so you can do this 🤦♂️

As a Finn I find the whole comparison between forests up here and in Cali completely ridiculous. Finland is in the arctic, it's covered entirely in forest (except in the far north where trees don't grow) and one could basically either ski or swim through that forest all year around. Finland is cold. Finland is wet. That's why Finland isn't on fire.

I'm not saying we're completely safe from climate change, but overall the threat of fires is much smaller here than in places like California or Portugal.

My family is from Finland.....and NOBODY knows WTF Trump is Talking about!....First of all....Finland and California are Vastly different Ecosystems! Finland has a TON more Water in its Forests, lakes, rivers, and run off from snow in mountains etc. And most areas that are Forested are not densely populated like most of these California areas. So we have WAY Less instances of Forest Fires! Not to mention California is so over developed that has taken away alot of its natural water resources, but that is a minimal fact in relation to the increase in Temperatures over the last 20 years due to Climate Change! Combined with Incredibly strong, dry, unpredictable Wind Systems which can carry fire for miles in the air and start massive house fires from a lightning strike fire miles away.....It has very little to do with the "Forest Floor".... There are also massive valleys in between the forest areas that are simply miles of dry brush! So if a forest fire starts....you have miles of fuel for that fire.....That is a natural ecology....you can't 'Rake Up' miles of dry grasses that are an important part of the ecosystem, are too large to eliminate, and would totally destroy the natural growth! It's a major dry, arid climate. I have friends in the LA, Thousand Oak and Malibu areas that have tried to do things to their house like add metal roofing instead of wood, adding special glass and bars to their windows, trying to keep a water bumper around their property etc.....but these fires are the WORST in California History! If miles and miles of land are on fire and fire is being driven and fueled by the wind.....nothing will stand in its path, no amount of water or ditches can stop a Disaster of this magnitude.... People need to be more bloody careful with their campfires that's what started the one huge destructive blaze that claimed so many lives and destroyed the town of Paradise, but barring that....if there is a natural fire that occurs from a lightning storm and is near urban areas, there is not alot to do to stop it except get out of its path.....we don't have Fireproof Homes! These Fires are Massive and Devastating. Mother Nature will always win against Humans whether it's a massive fire, tsunami, earthquake etc. It's a horrible fact of Life. All my Love to the Families who lost Loved Ones and their Homes in this Massive Disaster and we all need to donate what we can to help these Families rebuild their Lives. 💞.

We had a simultaneous series of them in my neighborhood that were started that way, last year. This one called the Camp Fire, because it started near Camp Creek Road. The name has caused a lot of confusion. Thank you for the info about Finland😉 Our president is so embarrassing! I’m just glad our out- going & our in- coming governors didn’t react to his nonsense, because he would probably get offended & try to find a way to hold back federal aid. In Finland we have some of the biggest densities of lakes and islands as a country, which means plenty of waterline besides the forests. And the word "suo" in Suomi (Finland in Finnish) also happens to mean a marsh which does make sense with the previous facts.
Forest fires do happen here like they did in the last hot summer, but not too often. We could extinguish our own and even lend our aid in extinguishing Sweden's.
I would say that it's a bigger concern here that a tree falls under the weight of snow and cuts a power line.

It is a real term. But it is usually used when you need to point out exact height like tree tops. When you are talking about the ground you usually say ground. Not saying its wrong (well unless you say the floor of the forest instead of forest floor) but it is still just a really weird way of talking about the ground.

The only "forest" left is more like bicycle themed park. People are indeed raking economic forest to get rid of smaller trees and twigs. Easiest way to grow them faster and those trees survive forest fires much easier when there isn't a lot biomass to burn around them.

As a Finn I've been trying to wrap my head around this for days. We do NOT rake our forests! Raking is part of gardening and forests are not. We have around ten acres of forest per capita, raking all of it would be impossible. In stead the humidity and dense network of forest roads help us keep forest fires under control. My father was diagnosed with Alzheimers about 2 years ago and over the last year or so I've noticed Trump going through the same stages as my father went through. The confusion, the fear, the incoherent rambling, telling stories with details that never happened. Just being so far outta touch with what's real and what truly matters that he couldn't lead a line at McDonalds. Get him outta there before he brings about the end of the world which is something he'd do just to cope with his own insecurities. Trump is a joke but the destruction he can still cause isn't. He lacks the mental capacity to do what's required of the President. He's not mentally equipped to deal with the daily pressures of running a nation.

As a Finnish man I can confirm that statement we Finnish people take a lot of pride and care deeply of our rich forests and keep them clean by cutting down some trees and in the process make the "floors" of the forest better and the forest healthier.

It just has little to do with forest fires though, and as you correctly stated the climate is very different but most importantly the "forest floor" is very different. The largest forest fire in Finland in the last decades was 250 hectares in 1997. There is an effort to collect twigs and other clutter to be burned in power plants and systems for monitoring the forests for fires so that they can be put off early.
California has 8 times the people of Finland for a land area that is just a third larger. Even if there are dry conditions around the year, there's no excuse for large areas of forests to be burning every few years. Trump does have a point when criticizing the forest management in California. If they wanted to prevent the fires that cost lives and burn vast areas of land, it could be done one way or another.
jormapeikko the logic thing to do would have been to ask Finland to send over some experts to help in training/showing how to maintain the forests, in exchange on knowledge and friendship between the two countries, - and also accept that global warming is contributing to the increasing fires, and what to do to try and reduces them as much as possible for the people of California,

Smileyrie James the one thing I will say about this President is that like many of his kind throughout history, he is good at stroking the flames of the worst shadows of human nature while simultaneously deceiving those who follow him that such behavior is the best way to get results in their best interest. At the end of the day, the Americans that are reasonable, civil and decent outnumber those who want to live every day in chaos, hate and foolishness. Things will turn around. It’s a statistical certainty.

We are doing great now since Trump/Hitler is no longer in Power. We are blessed now and our economy is perfect. My kids are working and attending college. We are always working overtime. So, please stop saying sorry for us. Don't be sorry and help countries that are doing bad and are third world countries. Because asking "what did you say?" to clarify would have been too much of a hit to his ego. So he went with "the forest nation". There are no words.
