I really love Doug’s arc in this movie he goes from being not very “manly” or however we can best describe him, you know not much of a fighter but by the end he goes into those mines and gets his baby and just the shot of him walking back with the baby and the dog covered in blood and barely standing idk it just gives me chills every time I love it.

This is genuinely a “pedestal” remake that all horror remakes should follow as a standard. This movie not only felt fresh, but it told a better story and updated everything the original was behind on. This should be the lowest bar and writers/directors should easily go beyond that.

For me this sits side by side with the Jessica Biel remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre from right around that same time. I love the original Hills Have Eyes, but for people of a certain age who wouldn't yet appreciate the original mainly because of its age, this is a great version of that story for fans of more modern horror movies.

  • @slashercat

Love this film. The eerie atmosphere, despite mostly being in broad desert daylight, was very well done. I felt that the nuclear test town was a cool touch. And then Doug transcending into a complete badass, out of necessity, was so satisfying to watch. One of my all-time faves.

In my top 5 horror remakes, along with The Thing (1982), The Fly (1986), House On Haunted Hill (1999) and Dawn of the Dead (2004). It's brutal, raw, in your face, and unrelenting. While I love the original for it's grittiness and overall bleak and dark 70's atmosphere, the remake just feels more visceral and disturbing to me.

I was 7 when this movie was newer, and it was on cable one night at like midnight. I wasn't supposed to be up, but I was anyways and I was flipping through channels and landed on this film. It was about half way through the movie where Doug is wondering through the nuketown with the dog (Beast), and everything from the atmosphere to the soundtrack, to the twilight zone type vibe really intrigued me. I watched this when it first came out and thought it was a good movie. Figured at some point it would be good for a rewatch. I tried to rewatch it sometime last summer and got about half way through it and had to turn it off because it bothered me so much. Something happened as I've gotten older that has made movies like this incredibly hard to watch, almost to the point that I don't even bother with one watch even for horror sake. Its well done and it makes you feel exactly how you should, I will say that. Its visceral, gritty, and you walk away feeling very heavy.

I really love the fact they changed the antagonists and made them these creepy cannibalistic mutants. I find that faaaaaaaaar more terrifying than the original, although I wouldn’t mind seeing another remake with the antagonists being similar to the ones in the original but- as far as this remake is concerned, I absolutely love it. I really love this film so damn much. I watched this as a kid without seeing the trailer and it genuinely disturbed me to my core. The shocking brutality and grotesque looking villains, and even the setting just makes this film the scariest movie in my personal opinion. I’d much rather have Jason Vorhees chasing me than having a bunch of cannibals looking to kill and consume me.
Also can we talk about the tagline of this film? “The lucky ones die first.”
HOW FUCKING CREEPY AND EERIE IS THAT?!?! 😱😱😱😱

Oh man, I can't wait to see your thoughts on The Hills Have Eyes 2, hahaha! I liked it as an "edgy" teenager because of how disgusting it is. I was all about enjoying the most disturbing and gross shit I could find in movies at that time. It was such a fucked up movie that I was so into the gore and brutality that I never realized just how shit it actually is as a movie. The characters are a joke, the dialogue is attrocious, pacing is terrible, and basically everything about it sucks. It takes a HUGE dip in quality even when it comes to the gore because the first remake used so much practical effects but the second one relies WAY too heavily on CGI gore and when I watched it again for the first time in many years and realized just how bad it looks, I can't even enjoy the gore anymore. It's actually pretty crazy that until recently I never realized that Wes Craven and his son both co-wrote that movie. I NEVER would have expected something so bad from Craven.

I really appreciate these review series. For me, this movie was always too much for me to get through. I do prefer the original Wrong Turn because it has a similar premise but the sexual violence is almost nonexistent. Those kinds of scenes are incredibly hard for me to get through and even if I can, they stick with me longer and affect my mood for several days if not weeks. Same with Se7en, the sexual violence is mostly through a retelling but it is so well executed and effective that movie is hard for me to get through to get past that scene. I do remember the sequel to this remake more than I do the hard parts of this one so I’m excited to continue on this series.

And a little did you know one of the movie theater employees that was tired of living there working there, put THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART 2 on before some kind of kids movie the next day as his way of protesting and quoting the job. Many parents and many children were disturbed by the dead baby scene in the beginning

The Hills Have Eyes is great, I recently rewatched it and it was good. But when I first watched it... oh my god. This movie is crazy. The scene where they light the dad on fire to lure everybody out of the trailer then go in the trailer and do stuff to the daughter and mom is insane. It's very brutal but still entertaining and one of the best horror movies I've seen

I remember the violence had to be heavily cut to be put into theaters (then they added it all back in for the unrated release). Definitely one of the better remakes out there.

That final fight scene with Pluto was based on the fight between Alabama and Virgil in True Romance.

i remember seeing this movie i think on my older cousin's watch party with his gf at the time... in 2006 i was maybe 10 years old and being a very tall shaggy headed kid who's awkward as hell with a few grizzly looking scars on my face (i had fallen from a tree and split my face open) somehow got me a whole bunch of references to this movie but i still love this movie because it just does accomplish almost everything that it set out to do

I disagree with you about the lasting power of the villains. Pluto very much had a personality, more so of a loyal dog child man (kinda like Leatherface- evil in actions, but maybe not so much in mental capacity). Jupiter? Billy Drago is an awesome character actor. He just wasn't given enough airtime in this version. But Drago has the looks and voice of a ghoul- and that's even without makeup. I had no gripes about the bad guys. They looked and acted in ways that were terrifying, revolting, and sometimes even sympathetic.

0:21 New Mexico* ;) definitely agree with your points though. I would have liked for the mutants to have more dialogue and maybe see the “normal” side of them like in the original. The only time you really get that is when you hear Big Brains communicating with Lizard through the walkie-talkie after the trailer attack and lizard just casually says “he’s keepin an eye on em” referring to Goggle. And Jupiters character got screwed over big time. He doesn’t get screen time at all and I would have liked to heard him talk more.

Im a big fan of this movie. One of the few re-makes I prefer to the original. Aja just turned Cravens story into a brutal, disturbing bloodbath. I wouldn't say that I like it more than High Tension, though.

There's 5 Hills have Eyes movies. There was a sequel in the '90s that was renamed something else. I think Cravens son directed it and it was crap.

Are you planning to this movie from Wes Craven. Invitation to Hell Matt Winslow moves with his wife, Patricia, and children, Chrissy and Robert, to an upper-middle class suburban neighborhood in Southern California from the midwest. Matt, an engineer, has taken a new job at Micro-DigiTech, a technology corporation housed in a large, windowed skyscraper near town. His new project entails a thermally-reinforced state-of-the-art space suit. Upon arriving, they are met by their friends, Mary and Tom Peterson, who also live in the community.
