@@jordzz174 Actually the R line V70 2.5T is already 300hp. It has a metal inlet plenum and bigger inter-cooler as standard. As well as tough clutch. With an upgraded exhaust, add bigger injectors and a remap, you are now looking at 400-500hp.

@@will_on2793 it's not only that, it's that if you shift too early, even if you're past top power, the next gear will take a long time to rev up again so i'ts better to extend a little bit past peak power so the next gear connects faster.
Exactly, that spoiler is designed to add maybe a little bit of downforce but primarily to help with the problem of the low pressure area on that slab sided rear end. By taping up that gap they're creating an even greater low pressure area which means more drag. I'm surprised no one there didn't tell them that was a dumb idea.
Taped up front grill and that filter is just pulling in hot air now. Get a cold air feed directly out through the front of the grill and it'll definitely help acceleration all the way down the runway from start to finish. Pull the bottom grill out to open up the intercooler more. And soak it with water before the run. Clutching at straws here but worth a bash 😁

They would still do it. Any mechanic can do an oil change and swap filters. Most will do any brand of car tbh Only time I know of someone being refused is when they rocked up to a Toyota dealer in a Lotus Elise "cos it has a Toyota engine". They wouldn't touch it :D

It is not shaped like an inverse wing, nor does it produce downforce (this is the difference between a rear wing and a spoiler). Instead, the purpose of the spoiler is to reduce lift generated by air flowing down off the roof and down behind the car. It prevents lifting at high speed and improvs the car's drag coefficient. Tyre frictional losses increase very little with speed, however aerodynamic drag increases exponentially. Therefore the faster you go the more impact a lower drag coefficient would make. In a straight line, downforce is pretty meaningless hence the aim of DRS, reducing downforce and drag to increase top speed.

Those Volvo T5 engines are tough old things. They can run to 500,000 miles when looked after. With a turbo and intercooler upgrade you could get over 400hp, or more with supporting mods. Gotta love that 5cyl warble.
anyone can recognize a Volvo by pretty much any part of it. It's one of the reasons I own one; they've always been styled differently than the rest out there and each generation is actually properly different, which I love about them. Just a shame the don't have vans.

My first was a C30 and I fell in love with the floating dashboard and centre console, made it feel more like a cockpit, especially since everything has a 10degree angle towards the driver. It was ahead of it's time that car. I'd love to see what the new style would look like in a hatchback format.

Watching the dials i did wonder if there's no point hanging onto 4th for so long, drop it back into the power band of 5th sooner, also fit a cold air feed to the intake, with the grille and vents taped up like that it would be sucking hot air from the engine bay letting a few horses get away.
A 150mph car was possible, over a standing mile it was always going to be tough! A bit more space and it would have pissed it, so I think the challenge was won! 😁 great episode 👌
Do US cars get tested annualy for roadworthiness? Over here in Ireland and in the UK cars have to pass an NCT or MOT to get a cert to allow it on the road, they check everything from brakes , suspension, lights, tyres, brake lines, chassis strength etc

Surely taking a turbo charged car right into the redline before changing gear was the wrong strategy? Would it not have been better to change gear earlier (around 5500/6000 rpm) and use the torque to pull to better top speed?
Its a low preassure turbo tho. Dunno about the 2.4t but my 2.0t rose in power all the way to 7200rpm ish. But i bet its not very good for the engine tho. Or transmission. But with 300hp ish i bet nothing is good for the engine since it came with 180hp.
That was my thought too. According to the manufacturer, that car is making peak torque at only 1950rpm and hp at 5250. Definitely tuned for midrange, as a heavy wagon should be.
No. Shifting at max torque is a unfortunately long lived myth. Almost every petrol car benefits from being shifted as late as possible, often well into the red, close to the rev limiter.
@@GoldenCroc my point is that with this specific car, shifting at redline is probably not making the most of the power curve. Lots of turbos that are tuned for midrange drop off well before redline. So instead of spending time trying to get redline in 4th gear after the power curve has leveled or even dropped, shifting to 5th early gets you back to a more useful rev range. Again, my example is specific to a turbo motor tuned for midrange, not every car.

Looks like you should have been shifting earlier into fifth gear. You were probably well off the torque curve that high in the revs.
that's what i was thinking, he was saying he wasn't gonna change gear before the limiter but the torque definitely drops off far before that

Do US cars get tested annualy for roadworthiness? Over here in Ireland and in the UK cars have to pass an NCT or MOT to get a cert to allow it on the road, they check everything from brakes , suspension, lights, tyres, brake lines, chassis strength etc
@@rneoman No, but you will get pulled over if your car can’t go faster than 55mph, and doesn’t have working headlights. That’s all. There’s also a transmission test every once in a while.

Surely taking a turbo charged car right into the redline before changing gear was the wrong strategy? Would it not have been better to change gear earlier (around 5500/6000 rpm) and use the torque to pull to better top speed?
Its a low preassure turbo tho. Dunno about the 2.4t but my 2.0t rose in power all the way to 7200rpm ish. But i bet its not very good for the engine tho. Or transmission. But with 300hp ish i bet nothing is good for the engine since it came with 180hp.
That was my thought too. According to the manufacturer, that car is making peak torque at only 1950rpm and hp at 5250. Definitely tuned for midrange, as a heavy wagon should be.
No. Shifting at max torque is a unfortunately long lived myth. Almost every petrol car benefits from being shifted as late as possible, often well into the red, close to the rev limiter.
@@bk83082 Peak Torque doesnt matter. The Power curve does. Most often shifting well into the redline is the fastest.
@@GoldenCroc my point is that with this specific car, shifting at redline is probably not making the most of the power curve. Lots of turbos that are tuned for midrange drop off well before redline. So instead of spending time trying to get redline in 4th gear after the power curve has leveled or even dropped, shifting to 5th early gets you back to a more useful rev range. Again, my example is specific to a turbo motor tuned for midrange, not every car.
