What New Navy Plebes Go Through On Their First Day At Annapolis | Boot Camp | Business Insider

- We got an inside look at what it's like on the first day for new freshmen, known as "Plebes," at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Induction Day, or "I-Day," marks the beginning of "Plebe Summer," a challenging six-week basic training program all future midshipmen are required to complete.
UPDATE: In the video, we list Cmdr. Beth Regoli’s title as the Commandant of Midshipmen. However, her correct title is Officer in Charge of Plebe Summer. We regret the error.

It's funny watching this after watching the one on Paris Island. For the marines everyone looks all sad, depressed everyone's yelling, but the navy's over here smiling, laughing and shaking hands.
Yea, officers get treated like actual people and royalty compared to enlisted...funny what perception you get by holding up something as simple as a Associates Degree. 😂😂

As someone mentioned, you may need to go to Naval Academy Prep before heading off the the actual academy. It's a good chance to polish your skills before you arrive for plebe summer and your plebe year (freshman). The academy is a very challenging place and not everyone makes it thru.
Joining the Navy was one of my best decisions. Sometimes I was happy as heck to be there, other times I wanted out. There are a lot of ups and downs but the key is to stay with it and listen to what you are told.
I did go to college and I did get an education. But the Navy did a better job at preparing me for real life.
Going through a year at NAPS greatly over prepares you for academy life lol. Those of us who came straight from Newport were like mentors for the brand new plebes
Well also the service sets you up with health care, pensions and free college money. I’m not sure it prepares you so much as it gives you benefits afterwards that make regular life easier.
I compare my college experience of earning two degrees to my 6 years in the Navy. College was mostly papers, lectures and test. Most of us were still supported by our parents. For me it was not life preparation at all. In the Navy I had lots of older mentors. Many offered life advice. I was given advice on dating, hanging out, etc. We also had training on Hiv prevention, finances, first aid, etc. Real life stuff ...
@@13bcoffee None of that is really military specific. I worked on a cruise ship for a period of time and was given first aid training for example. Socialization is also different from group to group and can’t be applied universally, you have to use your instincts based on the situation. I met more than a few people during my college years who were ROTC or flat out on the GI Bill. They didn’t really seem better adjusted than any other person and one of them was flat out a confrontational dick who after a point was avoided like the plague by his friends. Most of them were just normal people who happened to be getting a free education. Oh and one guy who had been in the Army smoked crazy amounts of weed because he had been forced to quit for 4 years lmao. Also being supported by the army or parents or whatever, it’s all the same for me. I worked during college, most ex military did not because they were receiving a pension plus the GI Bill.
Interesting.
What exactly made it more prepared for real life?
Interactions with people?
Such a difficult 6 weeks. I don’t know how they endured such torment. My hats off to those who were able to survive the vigorous conditions. True heros of the world right here

Probably hired some guys off the street and said

in the military the hierarchy is not by physical strength , if it were, the high officers would not be old men.
it works by seniority , rank , and job.
for example and officer is higher than a conscript , someone who was deployed is higher than someone who wasn't , and someone who served 20 years is higher than someone who served less
420th like
They’re called detailers lol they’re meant to look at things like that. It’s to instill that this is wrong and this is right
For all you guys shitting on the detailers, having been to summer seminar and met them, they are a lot scarier than shown on camera, as they don’t show the shark attacks and stuff that comes with plebe summer. They are responsible for a LOT of the training the plebes have, and are actually really cool people.
Boot camp is boot camp is boot camp - whether it's Annapolis, Great Lakes IL, or any other service indoc center. The goal is to throw the plebe/recruit into such an alien environment compared to living at home that they can be evaluated on how they handle stress and remain focused on detail. I remember in boot camp we were required to lace our shoes right eyelet over left. Not a big deal for me because that's how I've always done it, but we had more than a couple of recruits in our company get gigged for mis-lacing. I was in Navy boot camp where the bunks had ~5 inch thick mattresses and we were required to have "hospital corners" on the sheets. Then you get out to the fleet and realize your 2-inch thick mattress on the bunk will never take a 45-degree corner. It was all designed to evaluate your ability to handle detail under stress while you were still in boot camp and before you were sent to the fleet.

It's an awful feeling of abandonment for anyone when family isn't able to attend and celebrate HUGE events such as this. Been there, done that. I really encourage classmates and their families to "adopt" for a day, a holiday, a celebration of any sort to help and cover the hole that's there. The scar that is left from an instance such as this can be and often is quite traumatic.
In the past when I have attended graduations at MCRD San Diego the lone men can easily be seen in the crowd. I often approach them, shake their hand, offer them a hug, and congratulate them. This was a HUGE choice and life event they have taken on and to feel let down and alone, dismissed and abandoned can be horrifying.

@Just some Forest Ranger with Internet Access
That's not how it works at all. This is like boot camp/basic training and college hybrid. They're gonna get yelled at and berated probably 20-30 minutes after mom and dad are gone. This part in college will probably have more suck than anything else short of war and injuries.
Well they're nice Infront of the camera
But when that door closed, 💀
Just some Forest Ranger with Internet Access You don’t really get deployed on battle fields, most of the time you’re just on ships. That’s why people make fun of the navy lmao
No its not lol, officers are cool for the most part, below major anyways. They're desk jockeys, not enlisted.
@Konga Komha Are we at war? They don’t get deployed only at sea, if you want to do ‘nothing’ they’ll tell you to join the Air Force or Navy. Very rare you’ll actually be in a life or death situation in the navy
Those detailers arent "concerned" its a power fantasy and they are getting high on that shit
Just so they can finally lash out at someone, typical of all military academy’s, you prize for taking other people’s bullshit, is the promise of someone taking yours to someone in the future.
@Jon Boner what an insecure fantasy
@Jon Boner Hate to break it to you bud, but yeah, I think you're the insecure one here
Yeah
Your navy sucks
Boy I'm sure glad the class was diverse. That makes me feel so much safer.
Of course, I became emotional when it was time to say good-bye to the families. Yet, in the end, it’ll all be worth it! :)
The lads in the orange shirts are annoying af
That’s the point
@@chriswyatt9869 Not to be a smartaz but that's not the point. They may come out as annoying but that's the result of them caring for the freshman students at Annapolis.
@@datn.4371 Marines come from this school too.
@@datn.4371 If you are talking about enlisted Marines, then yes. But the people at Annapolis are midshipman trying to become officers. Enlisted Sailors and Marines go to boot camp. This is the Naval Academy.
Nizar oh ok
